At what age will a female dog have her first litter of puppies? 2. How many puppies will the female dog have in her first breeding year (i.e. since reaching maturity age)? 3. In Malawi, the average lifespan of a dog is 5 years, how many litters could a female dog have in her lifetime? 4. How many puppies would a female dog have given birth too in her lifetime?

Mating at age 6 months and 12 months, giving birth at 8 months and 14 months. 2 litters x 5 puppies = 10 puppies. 3. In Malawi, the average lifespan of a dog is 5 years, how many litters could a female dog have in her lifetime? Giving birth at 8 months and every 6 months thereafter = 9 litters. 4. How many puppies would a female dog have given birth too in her lifetime? 9 litters x 5 puppies = 45 puppies.

9 1. In Malawi, what is the survival rate of the puppies reaching breeding age (i.e. 6 months old)? 2. What could be the possible reasons for puppies to die before 6 months of age? 1. In Malawi there is a 60% mortality of puppies before they reach breeding age, therefore there is a 40% survival rate. 2. The puppies could die due to road traffic accidents, infections & disease, purposely killed by man, poor sanitation, temperature and humidity extremes, malnutrition/starvation (mother related = difficulty giving birth, inadequate nutrition, lack of milk let-down, injury).

10 In the following year, the female dog would have 10 more puppies. But this time the two surviving female puppies would also have their own litters. Female dogs second breeding year.

Factor in the 40% survival rate This continues every year adding to the demand for food for each dog, more dogs being malnourished, dying on the roads, dying of disease and the more difficult it is to ensure that all of the dogs are vaccinated, therefore rabies spreads more easily.

13 Animal Birth Control surgeries (ABC) or neutering, is when a vet removes the reproductive organs of the dog. The testicles in the male are removed (also called a castration ). To STOP male dogs impregnating female dogs. The ovaries in the female are removed (also called a spay ). To STOP female dogs having puppies. After the operation the dog will NOT be able to have puppies. The operation is safe for healthy dogs from three months old.

14 To prevent this; Neuter your dog. A neutered dog is happier, healthier and bigger. Neutering your dog is good for people and the dogs. It creates a STABLE DOG POPULATION and keeps the dog population safe by controlling the number of new puppies.

16 More benefits of neutering your dog Neutered dogs are less likely to be emaciated or underweight than dogs that are not neutered. There would be more food for puppies and less would die, increasing the survival rate. There would be fewer weak dogs as more food available. The dog will become more of a companion to the family. Neutered dogs live longer (a non-neutered dog may live for less than 5 years; in the UK a neutered dog will live for years). Less money is spent on replacing and training a dog. The dog will be healthier; less tumours, cancers and sexual diseases. A dog that is not neutered A neutered dog A neutered dog is happier, healthier and bigger

17 The male dog will not be thinking about breeding all the time and therefore: The dogs will fight less with other dogs The dog will have fewer wounds The dog will not roam as much and will stay closer to home The dog will not be as aggressive. 18 The female dog will not be having puppies every six months and therefore: Will not be protective of her puppies and be safer to be with. Will get bigger and healthier as she would not need to provide milk for her puppies. A neutered dog is happier, healthier and bigger

19 Mission Rabies, Worldwide Veterinary Service and the BSPCA are holding a mass vaccination and sterilisation drive at;. Please brings your dogs along so that we can make sure Malawi is a safer place. For every dog you bring to be vaccinated, you will get a free Mission Rabies wristband. For every sterilised dog, you will get a brand new collar. Remember to also bring puppies of any age all puppies can be vaccinated.

20 People bring their dogs at 7.30am to 3pm on each vaccination static point (normally at a school or community centre). Some people travel for miles.

21 The dogs are health checked, vaccinated and marked with a green crayon. All information is recorded on the app (rabiesapp.org).

22 The vaccination cards are completed. People receive their wristband and off they go for another year.
