6 ... Lincolnwood s 76th Awards Banquet Lincolnwood Training Club opened its 76th awards banquet with remarks by the Rev. John McNalis celebrating the German Shepherd breed, the late Club President Dean Leonard, and the meal that was about to be shared: God said, I need somebody strong enough to pull a sled and find explosives, yet gentle enough to love babies and lead the blind. Someone who will spend all day on a couch with a resting head and supportive eyes to lift the spirit of a broken heart. So God made a German Shepherd. The Rev. McNalis continued: The death of Dean reminds us of our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth. A reading from Revelation: I heard a voice from heaven say, write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, said the Spirit, let them find rest from their labors, for their works accompany them. And, from the play, You re a Good 6. Man, Charlie Brown : It s suppertime. Yeah, it s suppertime; and when suppertime comes can supper be far away? At this point, Charlie Brown asks Snoopy why he can t eat his meal quietly and calmly like any other normal dog. And Snoopy responds, So what s wrong with making mealtime a joyous occasion? Now let us share our friendship with one another. Following the dinner, held in mid-april at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles, IL, training honors were awarded to Club members in a range of dog sports and activities that included obedience, tracking, rally, therapy dog, temperament, tricks, Canine Good Citizen, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, Schutzhund, herding instinct, canine scent work, and barn hunt. Highlights of the event included Cathy Pairitz (photo at right, clockwise) being presented with the Ann Scarnavack Service Award, and Stu Unger (left) presented with the John Berger Memorial Award by Bobby Stevens, and Lana Berger (right) with the Anthony Scarnavack Memorial Award by Cathy Stein. 9 HEALTH CORNER... Giving Animals a Leg Up by Judy Braginsky Artificial limbs for dogs, even cats, once seemed to be just another crazy idea. We now know that prosthetic devices can provide a great quality of life to handicapped animals who might have been euthanized just a few years ago. Behind the scientific and medical wizardry of these artificial contraptions, however, there will forever endure the stories of how beloved pets and wounded creatures in the wild have come to receive their surrogate parts. These stories reveal the power of compassion and technology to renew the spirit of ailing animals. Ask Lincolnwood Training Club member Mary Hajduk-Whalen, CP, ATC, CFm. Mary works as a prosthetist at the Hanger Clinic, the largest and most experienced orthotics (braces) and prosthetics (reconstructed limbs) provider for humans in the nation. Years ago, Mary was asked by Lincolnwood Training Club member Patty Larsen to help Patty s goat that had lost its leg after a fracture. Mary duly constructed a prosthesis for the animal and probably thought the request was a fluke. Normally, the Hanger Clinic doesn t treat animals.yet, and more recently, Mary and Hanger Clinic co-workers have addressed the needs of a 3-pawed boxer named Prince, a German Shepherd named Farley who had torn knee joint ligaments, and a dolphin named Winter who needed a tail. Last September, a co-worker heard about Prince, a rescue dog now owned by Sandy Nichol of Bartlett, IL. The boxer was trying to manage life missing his whole right paw. The paw had been amputated a few of inches below his elbow. Mary s job at the Hanger Clinic is to evaluate patients with limb loss for the type of prosthetics they should wear. For Prince, she designed new paw, used a laser scanner to capture the image of the limb, and modified the cast online. The prosthetic paw was then casted and measured and now allows Prince to romp and run with his family and doggie buddies. The device (see Prince s photo on the newsletter cover page) even has a raised impression on its bottom that whimsically leaves paw prints wherever Prince steps. A few months ago, Sean and Erika Bowen of Lockport, IL had an ailing German Shepherd and also asked for help. The Bowens recapped their experience: When Farley tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), our family was devastated. Considering Farley weighs 100 pounds, we knew it would be a long and painful road. He had surgery and was thriving in his therapy sessions. But about a month after surgery we got more bad news. Farley had bone cancer. We were heartbroken. And just when we thought things couldn t get worse, they did. We knew that it was common for dogs to tear both ACLs. And that s just what happened. He couldn t walk this time. We were crushed. There was no way we would allow him to suffer but Farley could not get surgery and undergo chemotherapy at the same time. Out of desperation I called a friend who makes braces for humans. I prayed she could somehow make Farley a brace to help him walk again. Staff at the clinic (orthotist Gwen Ansier) casted his leg and made him a personalized brace. And just like that he was up and walking, and we were ecstatic. Farley has since gone through five chemotherapy treatments and is beating the odds. Thank heavens for my friend and this brace. It has given our loved one quality of life. And then there was Winter, a 2-monthold bottlenose dolphin found caught in a crab trap off the coastal waters of Florida that resulted in the loss of her tail. The Hanger Clinic has satellite offices all over the country. Said Mary: Kevin Carroll is our director of lower extremity prosthetics for Hanger and happens to live in Florida. Kevin and an associate, Dan Strzempka, were the ones who made a new tail for Winter. We actually made several silicone-and-plastic tails that enabled Winter to swim normally at her home at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida. In fact, Winter s tale became the subject of a 2011 Warner Bros. film, Dolphin Tale, Mary added. German Shepherd, Prince (above), had a personalized brace made at the Hanger Clinic where Mary Hajduk-Whalen (below) works as a prosthetist. Another animal helped by Hanger staff included Winter (bottom), who needed a new tail. 9.
10 ... The Poop on... Quick. Name what might be one of Lincolnwood Training Club s most important field rules to honor when you enter our spacious, grassy, pristine, fenced-in grounds to train your dog. Is it making sure to close and latch the gate when entering or exiting the training area? How about avoiding cruel or abusive training techniques? These are important rules but, think again. Think poop, or, picking up your dog s droppings and disposing them in one of a line of buckets located along the fence line, or in a special potty area at the east end of the field. If you are one of the non-picker-uppers who elect not to, even sometimes, because you have your reasons, here s a look at some misconceptions about this important task, whether done at Lincolnwood or elsewhere. l DOG POOP IS GOOD FERTILIZER. This is one of the most common misconceptions. Unlike cow manure, for example, dog poop is not good for vegetation. The high protein diet of a dog creates toxicity in the poop and ends up killing the grass it lies on. This will in turn cause the grass to have brown spots and discoloration. l EVENTUALLY IT WILL GO AWAY. A pile of doggie doo-doo can take a full year to break down. l SMALL DOG, SMALL WASTE. Incorrect. A single gram of dog waste can still contain 23 million coliform bacteria. This means if not properly disposed of, poop no matter the size of it can still cause some serious illnesses such as E. Coli or Salmonella. l IT S IN AN INCONSPICUOUS SPOT LIKE THE WOODS, WHERE NO ONE WILL SEE IT. Wrong. Rain and storm water will carry the droppings (and the millions of coliform bacteria with it) into nearby waterways. This will end up killing aquatic plants and fish life 10. and ends up in you guessed it, your drinking glass. Do we need to revisit the diseases this can cause: E. Coli, Salmonella, Giardia? l I PICK IT UP DURING THE DAY BUT CAN T SEE IT AT NIGHT. Day or night, the consequences of an abandoned load don t change. Besides, it could be argued this isn t even a substantial excuse being that most people own smartphones these days, and you know what all smartphones have? Flashlights. l I FORGOT A BAG. It s human nature to forget things from time to time. But consider a poop bag dispenser. Simply clip it onto your leash and you have one full roll at your disposal for future outings. l IT S GROSS AND I DON T LIKE CARRYING IT AROUND. Poop definitely doesn t smell good. And, yes, scooping it up is one of the unglamorous parts of being a dog owner. But some bags are scented to not only mask the stench but give your hands ultimate protection when you swoop. l TOO MUCH WORK. Does it require a few extra seconds of your time? But when you do pick it up not only are you fulfilling your responsibilities as a dog owner, you are also helping the environment and preventing yourself the misery of stepping in it later. You are welcome. l I PICK IT UP BUT USE LEFTOVER GROCERY BAGS. Unfortunately, what a lot of people don t know is that plastic bags are also an environmental hazard just like dog poop. They are filling up landfills and take years to decompose. Dog poop bags on the market are oxo-degradable (degrade by oxygenation) and better for the environment. --- The Editor (Source of article: dollarpoopbags.com)
11 ... If I Didn't Have a Dog... If I didn't have a dog I could walk around the back yard barefoot without worry. My house could be carpeted instead of tiled. My clothing, furniture, and other belongings would be free of hair. "Gertie," by artist Jack Wallenberg When the doorbell rings, my home wouldn't sound like a kennel. I could sit on the couch or lie in my bed the way I want to without taking into consideration how much space my German Shepherd needs to be comfortable. I would not have strange presents under the Christmas tree like bones, stuffed animals, toys, and treats...nor would I have to explain why I wrap them. I would have no guilt about going on vacation. I would not be on a first-name basis with three veterinarians as I put their kids through college. The most-used words in my vocabulary would not be sit, stay, down, come, and go pee-pee. My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates and barriers. My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats, and an extra leash. My house wouldn't look like a daycare center with toys strewn everywhere. I would not have to spell out the words, B-A-L-L, T-R-E-A-T, B-Y-E- B-Y-E, or W-A-L-K. If I didn't have a dog, how truly empty my life would be. (Anonymous) MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION German Shepherd Dog Club of America, Inc.
