6 The Paragon Distance Learning Programs Career Edition The Paragon Distance Learning Program (DLP) is the most comprehensive home study course developed for the pet grooming industry. It represents the culmination of over 30 years of real-world experience. Master stylist, Melissa Verplank and her team of exceptional trainers have created this system specifically for the at home student. The programs are designed to be completed with independent study. An experienced Basic Pet Stylist has been provided as your coach who will help you succeed. We also have a private Facebook Group, called the Students and Graduates of The Paragon School of Pet Grooming. You can join and jump on at any time to get help from the community. Ask questions, get help when you are stuck, share your wins and frustrations. We are here to help you learn and grow. Students who excel in this training are highly motivated, confident, and have a deep love and devotion to pets. When you enroll, you need access to practice pets from your area. The programs are broken into two sections. Each level is designed to build your skills in a natural progression. You must complete the preliminary program before moving on to the next level. Level 1: Paragon Assistant Pet Stylist DLP Level 2: Paragon Pet Groomer DLP Emphasis is on helping you become comfortable with pets, equipment, and techniques necessary to be competent in a professional grooming setting. You are guided through self-supervised study guides, books, and video lessons as you achieve your goals with time and practice. Students concentrate on basic pet grooming of dogs. Emphasis is placed on perfecting grooming skills while concentrating on proper breed profile, increasing speed, efficiency, and developing maximum grooming potential. The groom styles for each level are specified under the course descriptions. These definitions are: Trim Styles Level 1 Level 2 Y-1 Bath & Brush Y-2 Fluff Y-3 Guarded All R-1 Bladed All R-2 Bladed/Guarded Body, Scissored Leg The foundation of this program is the award-winning books, Notes from the Grooming Table and Theory of 5. These books are organized in easy to understand formats covering all aspects of professional pet grooming. Notes from the Grooming Table has become the premier learning guide in the pet grooming industry. Combined with Theory of 5, new groomers establish successful grooming techniques in the shortest time possible. The Paragon DLP is a comprehensive instructional package created to help you start your professional pet grooming career. The training focuses on six textbooks to give you a systematic education on: Pet handling Official AKC breed standard information Canine terminology Basic pet first aid Pet grooming techniques Complementing the textbooks is the Paragon Pet Styling Video Lessons. Dryer basics and introduction to the clipper. Safety issues such as loop tension, muzzles, bathing, and handling the fearful pet. Common Grooming Products We will isolate the key products that you would need to do your job thoroughly. Focus is on the dispensable products that constantly need to be replaced in a professional setting. Pre-Assessment and Pre-Work Observation of the pet s overall condition and temperament. Learn how to trim nails and clean ears. Bathing and Drying Skills Learn how to correctly bathe and dry a wide variety of different coat types on all sizes of dogs. Brushing and Combing Skills 1 hour Learn how to safely and thoroughly brush out multiple different coat types using an array of specialized brushes and combs. Anatomy of a Mat 1 hour What mats are, how they form, and how they are safely removed and eliminated. Neatening Feet Learn to neaten the pads and feet of coated dogs. Practical Application Unit #1 Grooming hours Levels Y1 and Y2 deal with basic bathing and drying procedures used on all dogs. Focus is on low maintenance clipper trims, basic head styling, and foundation scissoring skills. Pet handling skills are demonstrated to help you win the trust and cooperation of a pet in a professional setting. Included with this program: The Study Guide: Level 2. You will also receive registration for online testing, the pet tracking journal, and training support through the Paragon Call Center or online. 10 Theory of 5: Tail The five core tail styles. Dog Nutrition A healthy dog requires proper nutrition, regular grooming, exercise and training. These elements can affect the skin and coat as well as behavior. In this section, we will look at what is required to maintain a healthy dog with nutrition and how you can assist the owner through education. Common Illnesses in Dogs & Preventative Vaccines Many medical problems can be alleviated with conscientious care. However, almost all dogs will become ill at some point in its life. As professional stylists, we are on the front lines to recognize any dog abnormalities and bring it to the attention of the owner. First Aid and CPR How to administer basic first aid to a dog or cat. In a life-threatening situation, how do you prevent further complications until professional help is obtained? Parasites and Their Control Life cycles, prevention, elimination, and control of various external and internal animal parasites. Diseases and preventive vaccination procedures Preventative vaccination procedures with emphasis on the more common ailments and disorders. Practical Application Section 1 Grooming hours Level Y3 focuses on longer trims requiring a guard comb on dogs that are mat-free and trimmed regularly. These trims yield a longer, fluffier trim. They are forgiving to errors as you first learn to use the clippers, scissors, and thinning shears. ~ Minimum # of pets groomed at this level of training: 20 Section 2 Grooming hours Level R1 trims are close cutting, body contour-type trims. This is a low maintenance and popular trim style. Students focus on efficient and safe use of their clippers, achieving a smooth and neat result in the final trim. Section 3 Grooming Level R2 trims are close to body with a fuller leg trim. This popular trim style creates fuller stylized leg. 11 Photo Journal Critiques All Program Levels The Paragon Distance Learning program offers written critiques from photos you to the Paragon Training Center. Photo Journal sheets must be submitted by the end of each training program to earn your grade. Students need to submit photos described below. The photos should be clear and bright. The pet needs to fill up the frame without cutting sections of the body out of the photo. The better the dogs stand squarely or, assume a show stance, the better we will be able to evaluate the image. 1. A clear before photo of the pet profile or ¾ view from the front is preferred. 2. After photo of the pet profile 3. After photo of the pet front view 4. After photo of the pet rear view 5. After photo of the pet close up of face/head 6. Optional after photo of your choice the following grooming jobs and trim styles to your assigned educator for a photo evaluation. Level #1: Paragon Distance Learning Program Pet Stylist Assistant Submit photos of 2 Bath and Brush grooms on a heavy coated dog. Acceptable breed suggestions or mixed breeds that follow the coat type: Golden Retriever, rough coated Collie, Shetland Sheep Dog, Akita or similar breed type Submit photos of 2 Bath and Brush grooms on a wavy or curly coated dog. Acceptable breed suggestions that follow the coat type: Poodle, Bichon, or any mixed breed that has a curly coat type. Level #2: Paragon Distance Learning Program Pet Groomer Submit 2 photos of a Guarded All Trim with fur at least ½ inch all over the body and legs. Acceptable dogs would be drop coated breeds or mixed breeds with straight or wavy coats. Submit 2 photos of #4, #5 or #7 All Trim Acceptable dogs would be anything where at least a half inch of fur is being removed for a close body trim all over. Submit 2 photos of a Bladed Body or Guarded Body Stylized Leg Trim Acceptable pets are any wavy or curly coated purebred or mixed breed. Grooming Tracking Sheet All Program Levels The grooming tracking sheet should be completed for every pet that is groomed in the Paragon Distance Learning Program. The date, pet s name, breeds, and trim assignment must be recorded. Any important notes may also be added. On-Line Testing Testing is available for each section of the Paragon Distance Learning Study Program online. The questions are true/false or multiple choice. Successful completion of the online testing is required before moving to the next level of training in the Paragon Distance Learning Program. Upon successful completion of a 70% or higher test score, you will receive a certificate of completion for your work in the textbook and video portion of the home study program. Text Books and Reading Assignments The open book testing is an untimed testing procedure. Only one attempt per test is permitted. Some books are broken into multiple tests due to the amount of material covered. The first session in the Paragon DLP does not require any prerequisites. It will be shipped to you within two business days of your completed enrollment agreement. Subsequent lessons in the Paragon DLP will be shipped as you successfully complete the previous program. Payment needs to be received prior to shipment. Payments can be made by cash, check, credit card, or PayPal when ordered online. School Hours The Paragon School Campus is open for DLP support Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm Eastern Standard Time. The Paragon School will be closed on the following United States holidays: Memorial Day weekend, July 4 th, Labor Day weekend, and Thanksgiving weekend. There will be a school recess between Christmas and New Year s. The school may be closed for various industry-related seminars and shows, inclement weather, or other non-scheduled holidays. Class Schedules There are no structured class schedules to follow. You are in control of your own learning pace, within the structure outlined syllabus. Each level has a limit of 6 months each to complete. However, some students have completed the course in as little as a month, while others take up to 6 months to complete each level. 13 Admission Requirements Distance Learning Study Programs No previous experience is necessary for the Paragon Assistant Pet Stylist DLP. Successful completion of the Paragon Pet Stylist Assistant DLP is required to advance to the Paragon Pet Groomer DLP. Students may apply for hands-on Training at the Paragon Training Center after the successful completion of any of the Paragon DLPs to refine their skills. All applicants are required to be at least eighteen years of age, have a genuine concern and affection for animals, be able to stand for a minimum of four hours at a time, and easily lift up to 50 pounds. Credit is not granted for previous training. Satisfactory Progress Students must maintain satisfactory progress. You must achieve the objectives of the program(s). To maintain satisfactory progress, students must comply with the following regulations. This precludes any extenuating circumstances. Failure to maintain satisfactory progress is documented and kept in the students permanent file. Suitable Progress for Distance Learning Home Study The Paragon DLPs are divided into two sections. The distance learner can complete each program as quickly as they like or take up to 6 months to compete each one. You have up to 12 months to complete all two sections: 1. Paragon Assistant Pet Stylist DLP 2. Paragon Pet Groomer DLP Grading Distance Learning Program The grading system involves test grades along with reviews of your grooming assignment photos. A series of online tests will be given to you to effectively track your progress. If a student does not pass an online test or a Photo Journal Test, he/she may repeat the test once on or before the scheduled end date for that level. If a written test or Photo Journal test is not taken on or before the scheduled end date for that level, you will be given a 0 for the test. Report cards are issued at the end of each level. A student must maintain a 70% grade average to receive a certificate for the Paragon DLP s. The following grading system is used: Photo Journal Entries Written Tests Participation Grooming Tracking Sheet 35% of total grade 30% of total grade 20% of total grade 15% of total grade Leave of Absence Policy The school recognizes that personal emergencies may arise. If you have a special situation, you may request a leave of absence. The student must request a leave of absence in writing. The request will be reviewed by the Director. Your request will be at the discretion of the Director. If a leave is granted, a return date will be scheduled. Upon return, the student may restart his/her program by accumulating time from his/her last day of study prior to leave. A new scheduled end date will be assigned. A student is allowed only one leave during any program. If a student does not return to the online training or request a return date within 100 days of his/her last day of attendance, s/he will be terminated from their program Melissa Verplank The Paragon Distance Learning Program Handbook 13

14 Termination Policy Forms of misconduct listed below may result in termination: 1. All types of dishonesty. Knowingly furnishing false information to the institution. 2. Forgery. 3. Alteration of documents or photos. 4. Use of institution documents with intent to defraud. 5. Failure to maintain payments. 6. Failure to maintain satisfactory progress. Re-Instatement Policy If a student who has been terminated for any reason wishes to be re-instated, s/he must notify the school in writing within two weeks after termination. Upon receipt of this notification, the Director will notify the student regarding possible reinstatement. Paragon requires the student to rectify the reasons for termination before re-admittance. A $ reinstatement fee must be paid prior to re-admittance. Certificates There are very few states that require certification or licensing for pet groomers. At the completion of the Paragon DLP, students who have attained Above a 70% to 79% grade average will receive a certificate of completion. Presentation of certificates is contingent upon fees being paid in full, including tuition, tools, and supplies. Placement Graduates are offered placement assistance at no additional charge. This assistance is available throughout their careers. Although employment is not guaranteed, a comprehensive list of local and national job opportunities in the pet care field is maintained at the school. Placement assistance is offered on a personal basis. Every effort is made to give each student the special attention needed to aid him/her in securing employment in a position which best suits his/her career objectives. Cancellation Prior to Commencement of Classes The tuition and fees paid by the applicant shall be refunded if the applicant is rejected by the school before enrollment. An Application Fee of not more than $25.00 may be retained by the school if the application is denied. All tuition and fees paid by the applicant shall be refunded if requested within 3 business days after signing an Enrollment Contract with the Paragon School of Pet Grooming. All refunds shall be returned within 30 days. Once the 3 business days have elapsed the following refund policy will apply: If cancellation occurs after the 3-business day period but prior to commencement of classes, the $25.00 Application Fee, and a $ Tuition Processing/Termination Fee will be retained by the school. All other funds paid will be refunded. Notice of cancellation should be mailed registered or certified with return receipt requested. 15 Termination or Withdrawal After Commencement of Classes A student may voluntarily withdraw at any time from any of the Paragon DLPs including: 1. The Paragon Pet Stylist Assistant DLP 2. The Paragon Pet Groomer DLP In such cases, a letter to the Director from the student is required. A student may be dismissed for any infraction of the school rules or policies which are listed in the school catalog. The termination date for refund computation purposes is the date of the certified letter or received by the school from the student or the date the student was terminated due to an infraction of the school rules. Refunds of tuition are as follows: The school may retain the $25.00 Application Fee and the $ Tuition Processing/Termination fee, and Tool kit fee and textbook fee if purchased through Paragon % of the total tuition if termination or withdrawal occurs between 4-7 days of the signed enrollment agreement % of the total tuition if termination or withdrawal occurs between 8-14 days of the signed enrollment agreements for each program % of the total tuition if withdrawal or termination occurs after 15 days of the signed enrollment agreements for each program. All refunds due the student shall be refunded by the school within 30 calendar days from the date of termination of enrollment or upon receipt by the school of notification from the student of withdrawal from the program. Students wishing to file a complaint with the State of Michigan about their education may do so at: Student/Instructor Assistance Although the Paragon Distant Learning Program is designed for structured self-study, you are only a phone call or away. Our professional help line is available to all current students of the Paragon DLPs for duration of your enrollment contract. Personal assistance is available during established business hours or online. All correspondence received after hours will be answered within the next business day. Staff The staff and trainers are selected for their individual talent and experience. Many of the Paragon Trainers are Certified Groomers or Certified Master Groomers through internationally recognized voluntary testing organizations.
