5 The Coursing Ability Test Day Copyright March 2013 Piedmont Kennel Club. Updated Mar 31, Day of event a. Event is a rain-or shine event. (Event takes place regardless of weather). We will pause for severe weather (lightning, severe thunderstorms). You re encouraged to wear a hat and sunscreen if it s sunny, bring wet weather gear if rainy. It s the end of April we could be HOT HOT HOT or COLD COLD COLD. You re in the Carolinas, the weather can change sometimes minute-to-minute. b. This is an outdoor event. If you want to be assured of a chair or shade, please plan to bring it with you. There should be food/drink available for sale but if you want something specific, plan to bring it with you. Grounds are grass covered. Be aware of possibility for fire ants, mosquitoes, etc. c. Dress requirements: VERY casual. Shorts, Jeans, Tshirts be comfortable and appropriate for the weather. d. The show hall will be open for bathrooms. Obedience equipment will be set up but SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED by human nor by dog. We would prefer no dogs be in the building to prevent any dog from urinating on that equipment. e. Veterinarian? The emergency vet on S Tryon is open. Some first aid supplies will be available on the field. f. There will be at least 1 EMT on site through the weekend for basic first aid. For 911 purposes, you are at Choate Circle in the city of Charlotte, NC. This is in Mecklenburg County. (Cell phones reach towers in many counties). 2. We will do our best to get you into line in an orderly fashion but understand that we have the potential for a lot of dogs, with some people having 2 or more dogs to run. Work with each other to be sure that things run as smoothly as possible. a. This is a high-energy sport. Your dog will run fast and hard. Most of us do not race on foot for anything and would be hard pressed to run a length at 9am and do it again at 2pm. After running, plan to walk your dog, cool it down, rub muscles to minimize on stiffness. Assess for any injury or lameness. Please don t put the dog in a crate and say you ll be ok, walking off to watch more tests. Dog safety and health is your priority. b. As long as you are entered, your dogs will all be run. PLAN to allow several dogs to run between your entries. For the safety and health of the dog you ran, you need to take care of him/her, cool the dog down and take care to see to its needs. 3. Entries: WE WILL ACCEPT 50 ENTRIES FOR EACH TEST. ENTER EARLY. a. Early entries enter before a certain date and your entry fee per dog is at a reduced rate. This is a perk HERE FOR THIS EVENT but not necessarily done at all clubs and possibly not offered at any of our future events. It s an incentive for you to enter early so we can get our paperwork started. b. Write legibly. We need to be able to read what you wrote or you will not have your results accurately recorded at AKC. Fill out the form(s) completely. Cash or good check should accompany your entries. Incomplete, unsigned or unpaid entries will not be accepted. 3 entries rec d on or before Thursday Apr 5pm = $60. 3 entries rec d after Thursday Apr 25 at 5pm and specified closing time each day = $75. c. Entries close on event day at times specified below OR when a total of 50 entries are received for each test. i. Saturday s #1 starts at 8:30am final entries will be accepted at 10:00am ii. Saturday #2 starts at 1pm final entries will be accepted until 2:00pm iii. Sunday s #3 starts at 9am final entries will be accepted until 11:00am. d. If you plan to enter all 3 CATs, you need to fill out 3 forms for each dog you plan to enter. (early entries close Thursday before the event.) DAY OF EVENT ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL: SATURDAY CAT 1 10AM; CAT 2 2PM. SUNDAY CAT 3 11AM. e. Please be sure to write clearly as possible. If you want to be on our list, be sure your address is in the space on your entry form. 4. Roll Call a. Before dogs run, they will be examined for fitness to run, lameness or in season. If deemed unfit to run, lame, or in season, your entry fee will be refunded.

6 5. Judging, Event Chair/Secretary, Committee a. This is a PASS/FAIL event. There is a distance requirement 300 yards for smaller breeds and shortnosed breeds, 600 yards for >12. If there is a question, the judge will specify the course your dog will run. See AKC Regulations for specific course length and time requirements. The judge s decision is final. b. Judges and Event Chair and Secretary have extensive history in lure coursing (sighthound). The rest of the committee is comprised of very interested hard working people learning about CAT. This event is new to many people on the field. 6. Course plan a. Please be aware that the property has fencing on it but the coursing area is not fenced. b. Approximate layout of the course is represented and will be 600 yards. It is arranged so that we can easily divide the course into two 300 yard increments. c. Distances are shown and at each corner on the course plan, there will be a pulley on the ground at that location. (huge spike holds it in the ground). d. Modifications may be made to the configuration to allow for changes in weather and field conditions. Overall length will be as close as possible to specified distances 7. The Equipment a. Most machines involve a starter motor (car starter motor or similar) on a wood frame with a flywheel that pulls a nylon string over a number of pulleys. b. The lure is normally plastic trash bags (13 gallon white bags). There are 1 to 3 bags attached to the string (aka line ). c. A lure operator pushes an activator button which causes the machine s flywheel to pull the line at a high rate of speed through the pulleys. d. NOTE: The string/line, at speed, can and will cause a significant burn to any skin. After your dog runs, be sure to check it s feet and underbody for injury. Please be sure that you do not step on the line or allow it to touch your skin. 8. HELPFUL HINTS: a. Inspection We will check every dog for lameness, in season and fitness to run. Any entry that is lame, in season or unfit to run (excessive weight is one example), your entry fee for that dog will be refunded. i. Bitches in season? If your girl is in season, please leave her home. If she smells good to your boys, she will be a distraction to the boys present at the event. b. It will be helpful if your dog will come to you when called. c. Collars may be used but they need to be a non choker type collar, flat and close fitting (not hanging down). Regular leads are encouraged vs flexible leads. d. Please do not place a dog straight in your vehicle after running. He/she just worked hard and needs time to cool down until breathing becomes normal and skin becomes more normal (not hot). If you want to keep your dog healthy and able to run, please take care of him/her. You may have 2-3 dogs running, you have time to walk your dog. Plan for several dogs to run between your entries unless you have at least 1 person per dog to walk them out. e. The purpose of the day is to give your dog a chance to do something fun, something new. People will have fun too. Please enjoy the day, enjoy another thing your dog can do and have fun. 9. QC s, Practice and Fun Runs? a. Equipment, weather and field conditions permitting, we will have QC s, practice and/or fun runs at the end of each day s event - $5 per dog per run. Eligibility Criteria: The dog must be spayed/neutered, or if it is a puppy it will be spayed/neutered at such time as recommended by your veterinarian. Written verification will be provided to the American Kennel Club upon request. No wolf-dog hybrid will be permitted an AKC Canine Partners Listing.
