3 3 Formal Validated Teaching Qualification PTTLS Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector PTTLS is the minimum qualification for anyone wishing to teach in the post-compulsory education sector. (IABTC Working with KCAI to Ensure Best Possible Canine Standards ) IABTC is pleased to announce the introduction of NOCN accredited PTTLS from September This course is ideal for instructors, behaviourists and other professionals wishing to gain a formal qualification in teaching. It is also ideal for those just starting or thinking of becoming a teacher, instructor, or teaching assistant. You do not need to have any prior teaching experience or qualifications to join. This qualification was developed by Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) as part of the teacher s qualification framework and meets the criteria for Standards Verification UK (SVUK). While this PTTLS course is open to enrolment from students of varying backgrounds and sectors, the context and manner in which it is delivered is very much from a dog training instructor / canine behavioural advisor perspective. Outline of Programme: Successful candidates will be able to: Understand their own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist area Demonstrate their session planning skills plan deliver, observe and evaluate a micro-teach session Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist area Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions that motivate learners Understand the use of different assessment methods Level of Qualification We can offer this PTTLS course at either level 3 or 4 depending on your ability, both levels will be taught at the same time, but the assessments will be a little different.) Course Pre-requisites - There are no formal entry requirements for this PTLLS teaching qualification training course however you do need to be at least experienced or qualified at the level (but preferably at a level above) the clients you intend to teach. Due to the nature of the course candidates should ensure that they have the ability to manage the requirements including, reading and interpreting written assignments, ability to produce written assignments in a legible and understandable form and have the ability to communicate clearly (level 3 literacy). Candidates will require access to a computer and must have reasonable (level1) functional skills in mathematics and ICT. Candidates must be 18+. If currently working with unaccompanied children or vulnerable adults must provide copy of current CRB check. Accessibility and Equality The delivery methodology is designed to be accessible and inclusive and the assessment method is appropriate and rigorous. If you have any particular requirements please contact us. Progression PTTLS allows learners to progress into employment as teachers/instructors/advisors. It is Excellent evidence of teaching ability for the Kennel Club Accreditation for Instructors of Canine Training and Behaviour (KCAI). You could also progress to: Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS), Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS) and/or Membership of Institute for Learning (IfL). Course Delivery and Assessment Procedure This course will require a minimum of 60 hours study. Some of this will be at the IABTC centre and some you will be able to complete at home. Once you are registered, you will receive your course information, recommended reading list and your mentor s contact details, enabling you to start straight away. We will also agree an Individual Learning Plan to help you to achieve this award. The course is split into 2 parts and there are various dates available for part one and two. To gain a PTLLS qualification some written and practical assignment/assessments are required. When you attend the centre for part one, we will introduce you to the modules of learning, the assignments and assessment procedures. You will work through the series of modules and complete activities/assignments at each module. You can contact your mentor at anytime for help and advice. Your second visit to IABTC will form some learning, plus an assessment of your teaching via a micro (short) teaching session. You will be given full support on how to go about this. You will also be required to evaluate your own and other candidate s teaching at this session. All assessments must be successfully completed and meet the required standards to gain the award. NB It is also possible for our IABTC teachers to deliver this course at your own venue please contact us for costs & availability. Dates The course will run at various times throughout the year 2014 Dates Planned: Part 1 April 26/27 (Sat/Sun), October 17/18 (Fri/Sat). A number of Part 2 dates will be offered and you will be able to attend any part two session as long as it is within a year of enrolment. Cost PTTLS: per person. This course explores teaching techniques and skills for a range of dog training exercises. It is ideal for instructors, dog walkers, dog sitters, vet nurses, kennel workers etc. A student led workshop we will discuss the techniques that you want to learn more about and agree a plan for the 2 days. (Stay another day for the Pet Agility for Instructors ) KCAI C4 IABTC Teaching Pet Agility (1 Day Agility for Pet Dogs Workshop) May 9th & September 1st. This course explores health and safety, class structure and control, and methods of training that are suitable for pet dogs while ensuring any future competitive training is not spoiled. IABTC Teaching KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme Classes (3 Day Workshop) 2014 February 5-7, October KCAI B GCDS, RDO, C4 6 (Re GCDS) Covering all levels - Puppy Foundation, Bronze, Silver and Gold we will show you how to teach each of the exercises and give you ideas of how to keep your clients motivated and focused to keep on training from Puppy to Gold and beyond. Also how to make the test fit with real life. There is also the opportunity to see a test in action and/or take part with your own dog if you wish. (IABTC Working with KCAI to Ensure Best Possible Canine Standards ) IABTC Instructing Pet Dog Owners (Practical Competence) (Unit 4A) IABTC Teaching Pet Dog Owners (One to One) (Unit 4B) Open to all levels whether you are thinking of becoming an instructor, just starting out, wanting updating or just a boost of confidence and new ideas this course is ideal. This course is also Unit 4 of Canine Behaviour KCAI Section A: A6 Training the Handler i x. A9 Professional Service i x. A8 Laws & Responsibilities vi, vii, ix, x. KCAI - Section B: This unit supports learning for B Modules: Responsible Dog Ownership & GCDS. KCAI - Section C: 1-9. (In relation to teaching dog training classes or one to one) Unit 4 A Practical Skills for those mostly teaching classes - This course is Unit 4A of our Canine Behaviour Course and also stands alone as a practical course for instructors of dog training. It explores the knowledge, exercises, skills and equipment needed to teach others the basic control of dogs and ensure progression. It will also cover basic problems and faults. First impressions, qualities of an instructor, expectations v reality, teaching techniques and roles, how people learn, effective communication, motivation, groups, planning sessions and courses, effects of training, blocks to learning, monitoring, evaluation and limitations on advice. Relevant business laws, legal and financial responsibilities. Professional service and provision, organizational structures, code of practice, venues, facilities, resources, health and safety, incidents and accidents, insurance, equal opportunities. Ideal for those teaching dog training in classes, clubs, dog schools or individually. Also a must for anyone dealing with behaviour problems to ensure that at least basic control skills can be taught. Although we may touch on one to one training, this course largely concentrates on teaching of groups/classes. Unit 4A is Also Available at the KC Building Stoneleigh July 14-17, Unit 4 B Practical Skills If you wish to concentrate on one to one training or behavioural modification/rehabilitation then Unit 4B will be the better option for you. The main differences will be that the emphasis will be on one to one teaching, practical exercises that build relationship and help prevent problems, practical exercises that can be utilised to help as part of rehabilitation/modification training. You may bring your own dog along on these courses (although this is not compulsory). There will also be opportunities to handle other dogs (some trained - some untrained) as well as trying your instructing skills (with the support of your course tutor where necessary) on especially invited clients although this is a teaching environment you will have the opportunity of working with real clients as part of the course. Some students will attend to gain more knowledge, others will hope to gain an IABTC qualification, and therefore assessment is available but not compulsory. For students who wish to be assessed this will be an on going throughout the week with a general assessment on the final day and an after course assignment. Certificates will be graded depending on level of ability at that time. Most people will attend on more than one occasion to build on knowledge and gain the best from this course. 6 6 Canine Behaviour Course Behaviour, Training & Modification Divided into a series of units delivered via seminars & workshops with additional home study. The course is ideal for Dog Training Instructors and Behavioural Trainers who want to know more about preventing, identifying and dealing with canine behaviour problems. New to Canine Behaviour? To Get You Started...An Introduction to Canine Behaviour Cost One day seminars are available on the following dates: 2014: 29th March, 13th June, 8th November. The units detailed below can be studied on their own if you already have an in depth knowledge of the previous units. We hold these units each year so if you can t manage them all in one year you can come back and study later. Ideally the units should be studied in order. Units 1-3 follow a natural progression. Unit 4 A and/or B can be taken at any time and it also stands alone as an Instructor/Behaviorist's Practical Skills Course. You can chose to do Unit 4A or Unit 4B or both depending on the services you wish to offer. Unit 5 should always be the final unit as without the knowledge of units 1-4 unit 5 will not be possible. Unit 6 & 7 offer Additional study on behaviour problem solving at the intermediate and advanced level. Unit 1 How Dogs Learn 2014 May (3 days) Cost including assessment Canine behavioural development stages, blocks, catalysts and influences on learning, reward and motivation, nature versus nurture, temperament testing, instinctive and innate behaviours, communication, social learning, survival instincts, natural responses, emotions, senses, social groups, the dominance and hierarchy/pack order debate. Unit 2 Evolution and Breeds 2014 May (2 Days) Cost including assessment Understanding terms Ethology, cynology, behaviourist. Evolution and domestication - from ancient times to current breeds and influences. The wolf and its role in domestic dogs. Understanding breeds, breed specific behaviours and psychological and physiological needs of breed, breed types and individuals. KCAI Section A: A4 Dog Behaviour - Evolution and Ethology i, v, vii, Unit 3 Brain and Behaviour 2014 October (4 Days) Cost including assessment Brain - how the brain works and how this affects behaviour. Normal and abnormal behaviour. Common causes of problems, Behavioural and emotional states including aggression, separation, anxiety and stress and make links to intrinsic responses, psychopharmacology and complementary therapies. This unit builds on Unit 1&2, therefore, those attending will be expected to have this knowledge. KCAI Section A: A4 Dog Behaviour i, ii, vi, ix. A5 vii. A7 Problem Behaviour i viii. Unit 4 B IABTC Teaching One to One (Practical Competence) 4 Day course including assessment June As above but this course is specifically aimed at those wishing to teach one to one either as personal trainers or behaviour modification practitioners. (More details on page 4) Unit 5 Introduction to Behaviour Modification 2014 Oct (4 Days) inc. assessment Treatment of behaviour Problems - Case studies learning how to analyse specific behaviour problems and produce modification programmes in the real world. Also covering: professionalism, counselling and advising. For this unit you will be able to bring your own case studies, work though past case studies of the tutors and the centre as well as working with real clients under the supervision of the course leaders. Those attending this course will be expected to have a good working knowledge of the subjects in all of the above units. Unit 6 Intermediate Behaviour Modification 2014 November 5-7 (3 Days) Cost Case studies Building on your knowledge of how to analyse more complex behaviour problems and produce modification programmes. Working with real cases and case studies. IABTC Introduction to Clicker & Target Training (1 Day Workshop) 2014 Dates March 21st, June 20th, December 6th A one day workshop for those who are new to or unsure of clicker & target training. Incudes: basic introduction to the history and application of the technique, step by step guidance on why, how and when to use this system, psychology and value of motivation and reward. While spectators are welcome, you will learn more if you bring a dog. Candidates must have reasonable control of their dogs. Ideal for anyone interested in dog training, but new to Clicker and Target Training Already Using Clicker and Want to Learn More? IABTC Certified Awards and Training Sessions IABTC Clicker & Target Training Challenge ( 18.00) 2014 Dates: January 23, February 20, March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 25, September 25, October 23, November 27, December per session or pay 30 and stay on for our HTM session. Once you have the basic idea of clicker training you and your dog are welcome to attend our regular Clicker & Target Training sessions (held every month). Here you can be guided through the stages and, if you wish can ask to be assessed at each level when you feel competent. There is an extra charge for the theory learning materials assessment, but if you book and pay for a longer course like the 2 below, we will include the cost of the assessment and theory learning materials free of charge. NB Assessment is not compulsory you can just come along to learn more and have fun with your dog. IABTC Clicker & Target Training 2 Day Workshop & Assessment : March September A more in depth session bringing several of our shorter monthly sessions together in a 2 day workshop with optional assessment at the end. Book and pay for this 2 day workshop and receive free of charge the enrolment pack and learning materials for the C&T award that you are working towards. New for Summer Clicker Week including theory & practical assessments August 11-15, Days of Clicker training covering all IABTC C&T levels from Intro 3&4. Also including the IABTC Clicker Zoo! Work with our interesting and exotic clicker animals What can you achieve in the week? It depends on what you can already do. Just starting out level 1 is easily achievable. Already had a go, level 1&2 should be within your grasp. A seasoned clicker and target trainer can probably do 1-3. Someone who is already an IABTC instructor and accustomed to clicker training may be able to do the lot. IABTC Certified C&T Award Descriptions There is a theory section that you work through in your own time attached to all C&T awards. IABTC Clicker & Target Training (IABTC/C&T1) C&T1 looks at the basic use of clicker and target training your ability to time your clicks accurately and effectively, shape simple desired behaviours, free shape, put behaviours under cue, extend the duration of behaviours, use target sticks and other target objects, select, handle and deliver rewards well. Successful candidates can use IABTC C&T1 after their name. IABTC Clicker & Target Training (IABTC/C&T2) C&T2 looks at your ability to develop use of the system to work on more complex behaviours & includes: chaining, back chaining, generalisation, shaping without luring, changing cues, transferring targets, fading targets & cues, variable rewards. Successful candidates can use IABTC C&T2 after their name. IABTC Clicker & Target Training (IABTC/C&T3) C&T3 looks at the handler s ability analyse behaviour patterns and the construction of exercises or tests, to use the system to develop behaviour chains of increasing complexity, to reduce complex chains to one cue, free shape complex behaviour chains. Successful candidates can use IABTC C&T3 after their name. IABTC Instructing Clicker & Target Training (IABTC/Inst. C&T4) Open to those who have achieved IABTC/C&T 1-3 & IABTC Instructor qualification above assistant level. This level looks at the candidate s ability to instruct individuals and small groups in the art and science of clicker & target training. It will include developing your ability to teach others and guide them through the structure of exercises, timing, etc., as above and will require you to demonstrate your assessing skills, to identify if learning is taking place, to develop new exercises and challenges. Making classes interesting, motivational for both dog and handler. Successful candidates can use IABTC Inst. C&T4 after their name

8 8 IABTC Dog Knowledge Seminars Helping You To Gain Knowledge for Today s World (Plus Provides Evidence and CPD for KCAI) Assessing Puppy Potential with Angela White A one day seminar 2014 February 12th Using tried and tested humane and constructive techniques, illustrated with video footage of assessment tests on various breeds, this seminar will show you how to choose the best puppy for its future life, how to use the results to bring out the best in the individual dog and see evidence of the results. Training will include: relationship building exercises, tracking, arson detection, explosive detection (we don t use real explosives!), drug detection (we don t use real drugs either), fire arms detection etc. Then you ll be working in a team of dogs and handlers and attempting to solve a heinous crime using your canine detective and your powers of observation and problem solving skills to solve the case. NB This course is not intended for law enforcement officers as it is a fun mystery course designed to create new ideas for running dog training classes where there s a real purpose and end result to the training. For this course you bring your own dog, leash, food treats, and lots of toys and enthusiasm. No prior training is required, but as your dog will be expected to be social able around other dogs and team members, no aggression problems please. Canine Aggression: John talks about dog to dog aggression, dog to people aggression, the causes, effects and solutions. This is not a course for beginners as the problems of aggression are covered in some depth. A good background in practical handling and training would be helpful prior to attending this course. Although designed as a stand alone course, it is ideally suited to those students who have experience in training and handling difficult dogs. A two day workshop for those who are new or wanting to learn more about Rally Obedience training. Incudes: Day One a basic introduction to the history and basic idea of the sport, step by step guidance on how to teach the exercises and understand the various signs. Also how to keep your dogs attention and motivation to aid good performance. Day Two levels two and Three will be covered. While spectators are welcome, you will learn more if you bring a dog. Candidates must have reasonable control of their dogs. Ideal for those wanting to take part in trials or for instructors wishing to teach it to others. Introduction to Treibball with Angela White Wednesday February 12th, for the full day (Bring a packed lunch). Treibball', 'Herding Ball' or "Push Ball", is a new sport from Germany that is a lot of fun for both handler and dog. The equipment needs are minimal and dogs of any size can be trained to play. Treibball promotes better teamwork and communication between a dog and his handler but does not put any physical stress on the handler. It also builds confidence for the shy dog, and helps reactive dogs with impulse control. It s great fun for any energetic dog that works well off-lead and needs a job, or any dog that likes to herd and doesn t have sheep! A more advanced session to take Treibball further will be organised in the Spring 2014 Treibball is also covered in IABTC Master Dog Trainer Sessions (see page 10).
