FEB 2014 / VOL 15, ISSUE 1 What s Inside Every February, we kick off our Fund of Love campaign with stories of dogs you have helped with your support. You ll want to read about sweet Buttercup and our brave Sting inside. Thanks to you, one is now well and adopted, and the other is on the road to recovery and a future without pain. Adoption stories always warm everyone s heart. Rosie s adoption just made our Christmas day while Brutus was our first miracle of the New Year. Meanwhile, Newman s office visit proves the true benefits of dogs in the workplace. People frequently comment that they wish they lived closer so they could help in our efforts. Read our article on page 6 to understand that you can have an important role in rescue whether you are physically present or far away. You ll find much more including a recap of your 2013 Giving Tree generosity. Your gifts, in honor or in memory of another, set a new record and will help to ensure the care of our dogs this year. We can t thank you enough. You truly are the heart of Homeward Bound. INSIDE 2 A Message from our President 4 Fund of Love Kicks Off 6 Your Role in Rescue 9 Golden Taxi: Passing the Keys Rosie Heals A Heart On Christmas Rosie: Home for the Holidays BY: Drin Welker All of Homeward Bound s volunteers are special and dedicated, but those that work holidays like Christmas deserve a little something extra in their stockings. This year, our volunteer, Drin Welker, received that and more while making the holiday bright for at least two others. Read on! Tim and I were working in the Homeward Bound office on Christmas Day when Jody told us we could call former adopter, Marilyn Owens to tell her about Rosie. Marilyn had been waiting a while for the just the right match. I called Marilyn thinking I would get the answering machine, but she answered with a cheery Merry Christmas! When I told her who I was, she was quiet for a moment and then said Oh, are you calling to make me very happy on Christmas? I told her about wonderful Rosie, a six year old girl whose owner had died, leaving her in need of a new home. A good Samaritan rescued her and got her to Homeward Bound volunteer, Darlene Newlin. Darlene fostered Rosie and reported she did well in her home and got along with her dogs and cats. When Rosie got to the sanctuary, Jody took her under her wing and loved her. Continued on page 3

Our Mission Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. is an allvolunteer organization which rescues and heals displaced, abandoned, and homeless Golden Retriever and Golden mixes, regardless of their age or health. Homeward Bound secures safe, loving homes through a comprehensive adoption program, and also provides lifetime sanctuary for Goldens that cannot be adopted. Homeward Bound also provides education on proper animal care and on the benefits of, and need for, rescue and sanctuary. In the event of a disaster, Homeward Bound will provide assistance to other rescue groups and the families of dogs impacted by the disaster. Homeward Bound will continue to serve as a model rescue organization, addressing animal welfare needs throughout California and neighboring states, and strives to be a national leader in rescue, sanctuary and education. DOGS RESCUED IN VET EXPENSES IN 2013 $193,347 Another Golden Year Photo Credit: Rob Kessel One very busy Saturday in September, a family arrived to share their children s donation food for the dogs paid for with money they had earned themselves. They requested a tour, and while the day was especially hectic, we rearranged to accommodate it. These parents wanted their children to understand the importance of giving. They returned within the week and gifted us with the adoption of our deaf Ollie who had waited so long. Not long after that they returned for sweet Mariposa. Both have found a loving home; our gift of time was unexpectedly rewarded a hundredfold. Every year we make lists of resolutions with varying degrees of success. When Homeward Bound lost our beloved Vice President, board member, dedicated volunteer and my friend, Dick Brothers this year, I resolved to be better at two things to help fill the gap: welcoming and thanking. Our organization is powered by some 200 volunteers and thousands of supporters. Their first or best day may be on the heels of our hardest. Anyone who is dedicated to rescue understands that loss sometimes accompanies joy. I remain resolved to temporarily put the day-to-day aside and welcome each person with enthusiasm and appreciation; you just never know what it will lead to. My gratitude: it is boundless. Without all of you, there would be no Homeward Bound. Because of you, blind Bogey and Brutus are finally home; hit-and-run victim Nicholas is able to walk and run; Janie and Summer s cancers have been treated; and sweet 11-year old senior Maggie was home on Christmas. The list goes on and on thanks to you. As one of our volunteers so beautifully put it: it is such a blessing to find one s passion in life and be surrounded by those that share the same. I am grateful to you all and I remain committed to welcoming and thanking in the New Year. I wish you and yours a wonderful 2014! ~ Jody Jones, President

she had ridden there her whole life. And I heard Marilyn exclaim as they rode out of sight, if people think they don t believe in Christmas, they should see this! Continued from page 1 Priorities are priorities. Marilyn left her kids cooking the holiday dinner while she and her granddaughter drove immediately to the ranch from Suisun Bay. In the meantime, Tim and I dressed Rosie in a holiday red collar and harness and packed her red fleece blanket. Marilyn s introduction to Rosie had us all smiling; the connection was instant! Word travels fast; the rest of Marilyn s family and neighbors were all waiting for Rosie to welcome her home. Rosie got right into their car and laid down with her head between the two front seats like Marilyn followed up a few days later with a note to Homeward Bound: No words can express what a wonderful gift Rosie is!! Rosie is more than I dared hope to get. Because Homeward Bound truly made the effort and took the time to find the right dog, I felt comfortable bringing her home knowing she has no medical problems and could associate with the other doggies that often visit without worry. I hope others will have the confidence and patience to know that HB will do their best to find their lifetime partner. She is so beautifully socialized and follows commands. My family was so taken with her; Rosie visited each and loved all the attention. Because I have been alone for the first time in my long life, no pets or family, my children were concerned about the toll it was taking. Rosie made it all go away in just hours. Thanks to all at Homeward Bound. ~ Marilyn Owens and Rosie Photo Credit: Rob Kessel The Golden Retriever History 2018 will mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Golden Retriever breed in 1868 by Lord Tweedmouth on the historic lands of the Guisachan Estate in Scotland. In 1868, Nous, a Wavycoated Retriever, and Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel were bred together. Their beautiful offspring became the foundation of the breed now known and loved as the Golden Retriever. To mark the occassion, Golden Retriever lovers from around the world gathered last July at the historic estate. A special web site was also created detailing the history of the breed. The project, known as Friends of Guisachan is administered in partnership with the Golden Retriever Foundation. 4 Fund of Love Let the Golden Love Begin! BY: Lea Kachler-Leake Every February and March a generous group of donors comes together to build our Fund of Love which provides the matching fund for our Double the Gold Challenge, which runs from April 1st through May 31st. Won t you join in this important effort? For as little as $250 you can help this important cause. Or if you wish, you can provide the entire matching fund. All proceeds from Fund of Love and Double the Gold Challenge are dedicated to providing medical treatment for the hundreds of Goldens we rescue each year. Pictured here is a beautiful golden Smiling Buttercup Begins to Blossom was clearly in pain, her sweet nature was evident and she began to trust and seek affection. She underwent spay surgery to remove the diseased uterus, as well as the tumor. Although she was determined to remove her surgical staples herself, she did finally heal and began to blossom. Buttercup was adopted and is now flourishing. She is living the life of love, security and good health that every dog deserves. Your support makes it possible for us to help wonderful dogs like Buttercup, and the hundreds of others that will come into our care this year. Some will require minor care, such as vaccinations, heartworm tests, spay and neuter surgeries. But some will require much more extensive care, and we are dedicated to providing each one with all the care they need to live a happy, healthy, pain-free life. Fund of Love and Double the Gold Challenge are critically important to the dogs, as these programs provide a large portion of our medical funding. Won t you please help us in this vital work by participating in the Fund of Love? To receive a Fund of Love packet or for more information, please contact Lea Kachler-Leake at lea@homewardboundgoldens.org. girl named Buttercup who came to us as a stray - sick and emotionally shut down. A medical exam revealed that she had pyometra, a painful uterine infection, as well as a mammary tumor. Although she We were delighted that pathology showed the mammary tumor was benign. Little by little, Buttercup s playful nature began to emerge and she charmed the adoption center volunteers with her golden sweetness. 4 Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary

Sting: On The Road To Recovery BY: Audrey Farrington Sting s bio reads like a singles ad: mature, romantic, handsome single man with a heart (and coat) of gold. Excellent around the house, active, athletic, likes walks in the park, kids, dogs and especially the company of humans. In a shelter first, and then foster, Sting arrived at Homeward Bound in September, understandably anxious about being left again. Despite obvious and assessed hip dysplasia and arthritis, he was active for his age and a confirmed fence jumper, so he was rarely out of our sight. Thus, we had plenty of time to observe a clear change in him. In December, we noted that Sting s normal stiffness had become significantly worse. His hip had come completely out of its socket with bone chips evident on the x-ray. Whether his condition was from a fall, jump, or just normal wear and tear he was in quick need of surgery. A Grateful Sting Is On The Mend Photo Credit: Rob Kessel ball of the femur that normally fits in the socket of the pelvic bone and replaces it with a false joint supported by the large muscle mass around the hip. Generally, a 70-80% return to normal function and a pain-free active life can be expected something already evident in the happy change in Sting s face. Wellmuscled and active dogs usually have a quicker and more complete recovery - especially when combined with an aggressive rehabilitation program. To look at Sting, you might be afraid to walk him, but doing so will actually provide him with better function and less stiffness long term. To our volunteer walkers and feeders: note his chart daily for instructions but otherwise, please join us in helping Sting to a full recovery and a pain-free life. Mature dogs with hip dysplasia suffer from chronic, painful, degenerative joint disease. In the affected hip, the joint capsule (which is normally paper thin) thickens. As a result, extension of the hip becomes more difficult and can lead eventually to a sudden injury. Our dedicated volunteer veterinarian, Dr. Codde called in friend and board certified surgeon, Dr. Erin Paster to perform the surgery as she assisted. They performed a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) which relieves the painful bone-to-bone contact without undergoing a complete hip replacement. The surgery removes the To our monetary supporters thank you for your generous gifts which make it possible for us to provide medical care to hundreds of dogs like Sting each year. With your help, he ll be back playing the field again in no time looking for that perfect (and permanent!) home. FEB

Your Role in Rescue BY: Audrey Farrington We often hear this: If I didn t live so far away, I would love to help! Good news you don t have to live close by, or even volunteer on-site at Homeward Bound to support the mission of rescue. With so many animals in need, we can all play a collective role in reducing the number of animals left homeless each year. Here are just a few suggestions: Like and share our Facebook page and follow our blog: Do the same with other rescue organizations. When you share with others, you help to extend our collective reach. Volunteer: Thank goodness for technology! There are so many ways to help that don t require your physical presence. Clerical support, thank you letters, database management, website support, public relations, story contribution, fundraising, event planning, and transport to name a few. Complete a volunteer application on our website. Tell us your special skills/interests and we ll find a slot for you! Consider adopting before purchasing If you purchase, educate yourself and others: Share important information about responsible breeders and especially, how to recognize puppy mills. Never purchase a puppy from a pet store. By educating yourself and others, you can make a huge difference in the number of dogs that end up discarded each year. For information on finding a responsible Golden Retriever breeder, visit here: Foster: Not ready for a long term relationship? Provide temporary safe shelter to an animal in need. Fostering makes room for another, while helping the rescue learn valuable information to ensure a perfect fit in their future home. Protect chained or abused animals: Contact your local animal care and control organization. Even if the dog s owner is not violating any laws, an animal control officer or cruelty investigator may be able to persuade and empower the dog owner to take steps to improve the situation or voluntarily give up the animal. Ask for a welfare check on the dog. Animal control will respond. Teach your children well: You can inspire a life-long love and respect for animals by your own example. Help us foster the next generation of rescue by encouraging responsible pet ownership and involvement. Engage: Learn about pending legislation and become engaged. Your voice = votes = impact. Don t know how to start? Do an online search for pending legislation animal protection in your state. Don t know your representatives? Search find my legislator and add your state. Love the one you re with: If you live far away, volunteer with your local animal shelter or rescue. We re all in this cause together. You can find a list of Golden Retriever rescues at: Make everyone s job easier: Outfit your cats and dogs with proper ID and a microchip. Have your pets spayed or neutered. Talk to your friends and family about the importance of both. Donate: Can t make a donation of time? Your financial support helps as well. Make a donation in honor or in memory of someone you love; check our Amazon Wish List and send the pups a special surprise; purchase kibble through our Nature Select program; consider including us in your will or trust. Look on our website under How to Help and find the right means of giving for you! 6 Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary

Giving Tree Wrap Up Our Beloved Blind Brutus Our First Miracle of the New Year Those of you who follow us on Facebook or the blog may have already shared in our joyous news; our beloved, blind Brutus became our first New Year miracle. Brutus journey was a long one - from married man, to single guy. From sighted to blind. He arrived in September 2012, surrendered with his wife, Sierra. She was sweetness and grace; Brutus was her big, rough and ready guardian; a lovable clod who, through no fault of his own, was never taught the simple basics of civilized behavior. A heartbreaking decision was made to break them up so she could move on as quickly as possible. This gave us time to start the work that Brutus needed, but along the way, he lost his sight and we Photo Credit: Rob Kessel could not restore it. Another hurdle for our sweet boy. Beloved by the volunteers, we spoiled him. This might have made his journey even harder if not for DebraLea. A rescuer herself, of the equine kind, she was looking to honor her beloved 3-year old canine companion Willow by adopting a special needs dog to join her two tiny rescued pups. Rehabilitation and rescue are what she loves and she quickly fell in love with Brutus. Thank you Homeward Bound for taking such great care of Brutus. It was because of the love you and your volunteers gave him that made Brutus such a big love and a really good boy. He is eager to learn. I adore him. I can t believe how wonderful he is. I am so lucky. ~ DebraLea And we quickly fell in love with her! We just can t stop smiling. You did it again! You filled our 2013 Giving Tree with your donations in the form of lights, bulbs, packages, toys and stars. Your generosity astounds us a record $46, raised to support the Goldens. Hundreds of dogs are rescued, provided with medical care, and adopted to loving homes through Homeward Bound each year. Your gifts - made in honor or in memory of your loved ones - help to ensure that they will receive the care they need in the coming year. Each year, we launch a bare tree on Thanksgiving weekend with a wish and a leap of faith. By Christmas, you have brought it to twinkling, sparkling life and made our holiday dreams come true. Our sincere thanks to all! Your gifts have decked our kennels with love. 8 Newman From Homeless to Happiness BY: Christina White Being called to a meeting with Human Resources is rarely a good thing, so I hesitantly walked the long hallway. To my surprise, I was tasked with relieving the staff s stress during the hectic holiday season with a dog. My own dogs are older with various conditions that prevent them from being good candidates. But I knew that my furry nephew, Newman - a five year old Golden Retriever - would be the perfect ambassador. Newman came to Homeward Bound with his two siblings after their family lost their home several years ago. He was adopted by one of our volunteers, Lea Kachler-Leake and her husband Whitney, who gratefully added him to their collection of fur-kids and their constant revolving door of foster dogs. When I met Newman, I was immediately drawn to this big red boy and his gentle, loving nature and knew he would be a natural at employee stress relief. I arranged to pick him up on the way to work the day before Thanksgiving. My dogloving carpool ladies were thrilled as Newman made the commute with his head on one of their laps. At first, Newman just hung out at my workstation. As the staff began to arrive and word got out, Newman navigated the cubicles like a pro, sticking his nose into each, waiting for the smile and welcoming words that told him it was okay to move in for some loving. Not everyone is a dog lover; some may be allergic, others fearful. Our staff was no exception. Newman s first challenge was meeting an employee who was allergic to dogs. Thankfully, a quick hand washing after meeting him was all she needed. Then came a bigger challenge; a petite woman who was afraid of dogs. Newman is a big boy, about half her size. His reaction to her and her to him was beautiful to watch. He sat politely, just out of reach, respectfully waiting for her to approach him. She did, and as her hand reached to stroke his head, he leaned gently against her leg, not once looking at her. He gave her the time she needed to get used to him - which didn t take long! She soon had both hands rubbing all over his fur, his face turned up to her in a smile, as she proclaimed with a grin and I m afraid of dogs! Asking for permission...moving in for confirmation two smiles of approval! Newman Demonstrates Office Dog Etiquette His visits to various departments were broken up by trips to a small park for potty breaks, a drink of water, squeaky toy, and a couple of quick naps. Being loved on is hard work! Newman made many new friends on that first day and a subsequent visit. He counts among his converts: two people very uncomfortable around dogs. One ended up trying to keep him in her office; the other shared her banana with him (Newman says thanks! ). He was a wonderful ambassador for his breed and for rescue. People still ask me about Newman. Remembering his visits still brings smiles. All of this from a dog who once had no place to call home. Many wonderful dogs like Newman end up in shelters, where 72 hours can literally mean the difference between life and death. Because of Homeward Bound, Newman and his siblings had a safe place to land with whatever care they needed until forever homes could be found. Newman has repaid that kindness by paying the love forward. 8 Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary

Golden Taxi: Passing the Keys BY: Judy Kent We are blessed to have the long-time support of dedicated volunteers many of whom have managed their areas for years. That s good news and bad news. We become expert in our areas, but over-reliance on any one individual can lead to burnout and presents a risk to the organization if that person is hit by the proverbial bus. One of the most important things you can accomplish in any organization is capacity building. This essentially means that you are building a stronger foundation for the future. People- volunteers - are the lifeblood of Homeward Bound or any nonprofit organization. When we succeed in attracting talented people and putting those talents to use, good things happen and we build the capacity to fulfill our mission into the future. You ve heard this one before: It s faster to do it myself. Initially, that may be true. But over time it does little to build capacity for the organization. It also excludes others from assuming or sharing key leadership roles. You ve probably heard this one too: That s not how we used to do it. New ways of looking at old challenges can lead to innovative solutions. A fresh perspective can energize a team and lead to even greater results. It s in that spirit that I hand the keys to the Taxi Team over to Judy Ortiz one of our devoted volunteers. She shares a little about herself here: From Judy K. To Judy O. I was a police dispatcher for 32 years, most of that with Sac PD, until I was forced to take a medical leave for a serious illness (better now!) After that - I had a void in my life. I found hospice and loved it, but wanted to do more. I ve always loved animals. I have had Goldens since about 1980; our last, Roxie, lost in May of While we still had a house full of rescues (two dogs and three cats) I missed having a Golden. My daughter was doing Community Service at Homeward Bound. I was pretty sure I could be surrounded by Golden love there, so I put in an application. From my very first contact with volunteer coordinator, Pat Heise, I felt welcome. The people are amazing and the love and devotion they have for these animals is so inspiring. The organization is also very supportive and encouraging for me to try anything I am interested in. I feel needed, wanted and appreciated - and that inspires me to do more. I m a feeder twice a week and walk three times a week. I ve been shadowing Judy on the Golden Taxi procedures for a while now. I have a hunch that my background as a police dispatcher just might come in handy with this crucial position! Life can have its trials.you come out to the Ranch, grab a dog, go to a yard and in no time - you feel internal peace and contentment. HB has become my other family. The people and dogs bring out the best things in me and want me to be a better person. To see those that arrive scared or with issues become confident, happy, adoptable dogs is so rewarding. In July of this year, I succumbed to the deep brown, soulful eyes of a beautiful 9 year old named Riley. He is my first HB adoption, but definitely not my last! I am looking forward to helping others on their journeys homeward bound. ~ Judy Ortiz FEB

Winter Safety Tips for The Four-Leggers BY: Lea Kachler-Leake If you re like many of us, you re eagerly anticipating the arrival of Spring. But since we are still in the throes of a chilly winter, here are some winter safety reminders to help keep your pets safe and happy as we await warmer weather. If you suffer from arthritis, you know that cold weather can exacerbate the pain. The same is true for dogs. If you have a senior dog, you may want to shorten his walks, to make sure he is not suffering in the cold. The cold can also make senior dogs less stable and clumsier, so it s a good idea to monitor them when they re going up and down stairs. Winter is a good time for a check up to make sure your dog is healthy and ready for chilly weather. Dogs with certain illnesses (like kidney disease and heart disease) are more vulnerable to the cold. Pets should be kept inside on cold winter nights. Their fur does not make them impervious to the cold. They feel it just like we do. Long-haired and thick-coated breeds are more adaptable to the cold, but dogs can suffer hypothermia and frostbite just like humans. It s a good idea to put a sweater or jacket on small and short-hair breeds when walking outside. If it s too cold outside for you, it s too cold for your pet! Pets that spend a lot of time outside during the winter may need more food keeping warm burns energy. Metal water bowls outside can freeze and pets tongues can stick to an icy metal bowl. Plastic water bowls may be a better choice outside during the winter. Outside cats will cuddle up to anything to stay warm, including car engines. This can pose a serious threat. It s a good idea to bang on your car hood or honk your horn before starting up the engine. If you live in an area where it snows, it s a good idea to wipe paws when your dog or cat comes back inside so as to keep rock salt, anti-freeze, and toxic chemicals off their feet. If you warm your home with a space heater or fire, make sure your pets don t get too close. They like the warmth too, but it s important to make sure paws or tails don t get burned. A pet can inadvertently knock a heater over, with potentially catastrophic results. A safety guard around the heater or fireplace is a good idea. Anti-freeze is a deadly poison and its sweet taste can attracts pets. Wipe up spills from the garage and driveway. When walking, keep your dogs away from spills in driveways and streets. Winter can be a beautiful time, but it can also be a dangerous one. A few common sense precautions can keep your fourleggers safe, healthy and happy while we await the warmer days of Spring. Nature s Select Food, the food used by Homeward Bound, is available for home delivery in the greater Sacramento region and the Bay Area. Your dogs can enjoy a fantastic, healthy food (made in the USA) and you can enjoy free delivery to your front door. For every bag purchased, Nature s Select donates 10-cents per pound to Homeward Bound. A great way to feed your pets high quality food while helping the Homeward Bound Goldens. If you choose, you can also add a donation of food to Homeward Bound when you complete your order. What a great, easy way to support our dogs! 10 Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary
