1 MEDICIÓN Y EVALUACIÓN PARA LA TRANSFORMACIÓN ACADÉMICA DE PUERTO RICO, META-PR Eighth Grade English as a Second Language Script for Practice Questions Listening Section Script for 8th Grade English Practice Questions These are the English Listening Practice Questions for 8th grade. In this section, you will show how well you understand spoken English. Listen carefully. Then, choose the correct answer.
2 Listen to a passage about a woman named Rebecca Rogers. You will answer questions 1 through 5 based on this passage. (Woman): Rebecca Rogers came to Puerto Rico as part of her job. She traveled to the island at least four times a year, so it was a familiar place to her. But one day, as she settled in to enjoy the clear water and sandy beach, she noticed something she could not remember encountering before: stray dogs. They were everywhere and they were obviously starving. Rogers quickly packed up her things and went to the closest grocery store. She returned with bags of dog food, which she ripped open and left for the hungry animals. Even though Rogers lived in North Carolina, she could not forget what she saw in Puerto Rico. The reports she read indicated there were more than 100,000 stray dogs and cats living in Puerto Rico at any one time, and it had become a serious problem. Rogers wanted to get involved to see if she could make a difference. At first, she just made sure that whenever she traveled to the island on business, she kept her car stocked with multiple sacks of pet food and treats. When she drove from one place to another, she often stopped to feed the dogs. Then she found out about an organization called Hands for Paws, based in the city of Yabucoa. Its efforts focused on providing food for the animals, preventing animal overpopulation, and, most importantly, helping the animals find loving homes. Rogers has donated time and money to Hands for Paws. She also adopted five stray dogs, adding to the nine dogs and four cats she already had on her large property in North Carolina. Rogers knew she couldn t save all the animals, but she knew her efforts still made a difference. Now answer the following questions. 08I0872LI
3 Look for question number 1. Now listen carefully to the question. What is this passage MAINLY about? A the number of stray animals in Puerto Rico B donating to organizations that help stray animals C how a woman adopted five stray dogs from Puerto Rico D how a woman decided to care for stray animals in Puerto Rico Choose the letter of the correct answer. 4 4 Look for question number 2. Now listen carefully to the question. Which question is answered by the information in the passage? A Why did Rebecca Rogers go to Puerto Rico? B Why does Rebecca Rogers like animals so much? C Why does Rebecca Rogers live in North Carolina? D Why did Rebecca Rogers organize Hands for Paws? Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_1
5 Look for question number 3. Now listen carefully to the question. Which event happened FIRST? A Rebecca Rogers could not forget what she saw in Puerto Rico. B Rebecca Rogers adopted five stray dogs in Puerto Rico. C Rebecca Rogers noticed starving dogs on the beach. D Rebecca Rogers went to Puerto Rico on business. Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_4
6 Look for question number 4. Now listen carefully to the question. What would be a good title for this passage? A Abandoned Dogs and Cats B Caring Friends to Stray Animals C Rebecca s Vacation in Puerto Rico D How Hands for Paws Got Its Name Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_2
7 Look for question number 5. Now listen carefully to the question. What is MOST LIKELY a result of the work done by Hands for Paws? A Rebecca Rogers has adopted more dogs. B Fewer people have dogs and cats as family pets. C There are fewer stray dogs and cats in Puerto Rico. D More people have gone to Puerto Rico to adopt stray animals. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Listen to the passage, the questions, and the answer choices again. (Woman repeats the passage, and the Narrator repeats the questions and answer choices.) (Pause 5 seconds.) PRI LI_3
Listen to a passage about La Parguera, Puerto Rico. You will answer questions 6 through 10 based on this passage. 8 (Woman): Think about thousands of fireflies flying around you, or consider the best light show you ve ever seen. If you can picture these things in your mind, you can picture the ocean around the village of La Parguera, Puerto Rico, at night. This light-filled display occurs each night in the bioluminescent bay at La Parguera. The bioluminescent bay at La Parguera is a phenomenon of light that is caused by plankton, which are tiny creatures similar to those that form algae. When the water they live in is disturbed even a little, such as by someone stirring the water with his or her hand, the organisms light up. This produces a star-like ocean scene. Some observers have said that the experience is like watching stars in the water instead of in the sky. Those who know say that moonless nights are the very best time to observe these stars in the ocean. Because of its unusual beauty, La Parguera has become a popular tourist destination. Boats of various sizes take visitors on nighttime excursions through the bay to view the beauty of the starlit ocean. Most come away with an unforgettable memory. Now answer the following questions. 08I0874LI
9 Look for question number 6. Now listen carefully to the question. Which question is answered by the information in the passage? A Why does the water at La Parguera light up at night? B Why are there plankton in the bay at La Parguera? C Where else can a person see stars in the ocean? D Where is the best light show performed? Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_1
10 Look for question number 7. Now listen carefully to the question. According to the passage, why would someone visit La Parguera instead of any other place? A La Parguera has more hotels. B La Parguera has free concerts. C La Parguera is easier to get to. D La Parguera is unusually beautiful. Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_4
11 Look for question number 8. Now listen carefully to the question. How often can a person see stars in the ocean at La Parguera? A every year B every night C once a week D once a month Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_2

13 Look for question number 10. Now listen carefully to the question. According to the passage, when is the BEST time to appreciate the beauty of the stars in the ocean? A when the sky is clear B during the new moon C on moonless nights D when it is cloudy Choose the letter of the correct answer. Listen to the passage, the questions, and the answer choices again. (Woman repeats the passage, and the Narrator repeats the questions and answer choices.) (Pause 10 seconds.) PRI LI_3
