Lokoso would make a warning sound if she heard a coyote or saw a bald Eagle overhead and all the puppies would scamper to their whelping box and sit and watch her. Lisa Saban, pg 35 ABOUT THIS ISSUE THE KENNEL NAME GAME! If you have been curious about the derivation of kennel names this game is for you. We ve asked breeders to tell us on the hush-hush how they came up with their kennel name. The correct answer for each of four kennels is given below along with three incorrect answers. Contest Rules Submit your answers via to bulletineditor@basenji. org by April 25. Individuals whose kennel name is used are still eligible to play. All submissions will receive notification of receipt. Winning submissions will correctly identify all eight kennels. The winner will be randomly drawn from a pool of correct answers. There were no correcct answers for Round One of the Kennel Name Game. The winner of this contest will receive three free half-page ads in subsequent issues of the Bulletin. JATO 1 Old French version of chateau 2 Rocketry term for Jet Assisted Take-Off 3 Jumbled from usual travel day breakfast: Orange Juice And Toast 4 Stands for Just Ask To Own ARENDAHL 1 Parts of a nearby exit sign for Arena and Dahlia Ave. 2 Slight change to spelling of a Norwegian seaside village 3 In tribute to the movie star Arlene Dahl and our first Basenji 4 Jumbled letters for how we referred to two dear friends: Her and Al TAMSALA 1 Swahili for quiet hunter 2 Combination platter: Tamales and Salsa 3 Combination of parts of three other kennel names 4 Our friend Tamara worked with Single Adults Legal Assistance AMUN 1 Short-hand for the phrase Am I Understood? 2 Arabic for swiftness 3 Backwards rendering of NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) 4 Patron deity of Thebes in Ancient Egypt DALJI 1 Swahili for steals our food 2 Texas influence (Dallas + Basenji) 3 Combination of 2 breed names: Dalmation + Basenji 4 A Persian wild dog breed KAZOR 1 Notation meaning a grand (K = 1,000) combined with Azores (my honeymoon trip) 2 The K replaced a first draft C to appear more African 3 Variation of Prozac (which our Basenjis almost drove us to think of using) 4 Comic book inspired combination of Ka-boom and Zorro KUWAGA 1 Swahili for divide, or share 2 What U.S. Army paratroopers shout as they pull the rip-cord 3 Backwards spelling of breeder s birth place: Awaguk, North Dakota 4 Swahili for better not step there ELDORADO 1 Because Basenjis are the Cadlllacs of dog-dom 2 Spanish for quick red dog 3 Our first basenji loved this brand of tortilla chips 4 Inspired by the title of a John Wayne western movie THERE IS NO better way to start 2014 than looking at photos of puppies and reading about native stock. Bev Bland s interview and Lisa Saban s account of her half-african litters have left me wanting to experience them first hand. Since I am a congenital worrier, Andrea Stone s informative article on socializing puppies gave me a lot to think and worry about. I am nowhere near having Eta s litter meet 50 people, let alone 100. Too bad posting pictures on FaceBook doesn t count! If you miss seeing the performance rankings and new titles in this issue, rest assured you will see them in the QTR2 performance issue of the Bulletin. If you are proud of your dog s athleticism, superior obedience skills, barn hunting experience, tracking or drafting, this is the issue you will want to read, advertise in, and enjoy. As no one submitted photos of dogs who had been issued a CHIC number, I took the opportunity to run photos of Carole Kirk s pups. If you would like to have your dog(s) featured, contact me. Be aware that preference goes to our frequent advertisers. I read in another forum that the membership was not made aware of the Name Game. It was mentioned in this column and featured in the last issue, as well as being posted on FaceBook. If there are other media outlets that you know of please share! The contest continues (see page at left). Another change, suggested in the past issue of the Bulletin, and implemented here, is to limit specialty results to the winners and reserve winners. Again, complete results are available on line, with the AKC site being an excellent resource. This change allows more photos to be incorporated. I appreciate our advertisers efforts to prepare artwork. However, preparing art for printing has different requirements than uploading photos for screen viewing. Two of the biggest differences are the color space (RGB for monitors, CMYK for print) and image size (smallfor monitors, large for print). Moreover, ads that are to extend off the page need to include an extra bit of image called a bleed. In the end, it is often easier for me to work with the original images, copy in a Word doc, and a concept (which I promise to follow faithfully). At the end of this publication I have provided some examples of pixel sizes and corresponding image sizes to help advertisers send hirez images. Look forward to hearing from you, Eunice Ockerman Editor bulletineditor@basenji.org BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 11

CONTRIBUTORS FROM THE PRESIDENT Linda Siekert page 28 Linda has successfully piloted seven basenjis to over 100 AKC titles, including the only MACH, PACH and AKC Triple Champion; her dogs have won multiple Best in Field, Best of Breed, High in Trial and High Combined. Her first basenji Tre, was 100% domestic, the other six have ranged between 31% - 65% new African (Avongara. She is one half of the BCOA African Stock Project (ASP), responsible for the maintenance of the ASP database featuring photos, pedigrees and health information of native African stock. She has written numerous articles featured in various basenji publications throughout the US and abroad. Mia Löwbeer page 32 Mia got her first Basenji in In 1977 she helped establish The Swedish Basenji Society and was their president for 14 years. She and Henriette Folke wrote The Breed Specific Breeding Strategy for Basenji in Sweden. Mia is working on several health issues in the breed and is a member of the HRC of BCOA. She traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2008 and returned with Avongara Angali and Avongara Asuma (Asuma now lives in Finland). Today she lives with five Basenjis and is active in showing, obedience, agility, rally-o and lure coursing. Is your website up to date? Does it have old news? Information that s not current? Don t let your website become out of date! UPDATE your web site so you can be the resource for Basenji breed information. REMEMBER for-profit breeder web sites are always up to date. It s their goal to get the public s attention so that they can be the resource for Basenjis. UPDATE your data-tags so that when people search they can find you. BRAG about your puppies & accomplishments. DISPLAY your imports. ANNOUNCE your future plans! HIGHLIGHT Basenjis who need a new home and link to rescue sites. REMOVE old information. PROVIDE referrals on your site if you are not breeding or expecting a litter. PROMOTE your history in the breed. Lisa Bauer Saban page 34 Lisa owns one of the African imports, Ntomba Lokoso, RN, JC. She has trained and shown dogs all my life. She says it is in her blood her grandparents started the Great Dane Club of Maryland back in the 40 s. Lisa has owned and/or rescued many domestic Basenjis from a myriad of bloodlines. But the closest she has come to the very unique behavioral traits of the African import, is the hybrid wolf she owned many years ago (she does not condone the breeding of hybrids it s a tortured life for the poor wolf). Bill McCann page 36 Bill describes himself as a BCOA lifer. Andrew Sawler and I have bred Basenjis for more than two decades at Kivu Basenjis. Andrew is active in the show ring, I am kennel help. Both Bill and Andrew worked on BCOA national specialties in 1998 and 2006 and serve as club volunteers when and where they can. Alison Smith page 42 Alison is the owner of the The Grinning Dog, LLC specializing in individualized care of the family dog including, boarding, daycare, and our LifeSkills for Dogs training program and is a noted breeder of Australian Shepards. She writes The Local Dog and is the founder of Ethipups, The Association for Ethical Dog Breeders. She also created the Local Dog Network to connect ethically bred puppies with loving homes. Andrea Stone page 46 Andrea has been working with dogs professionally on and off for over 20 years. For the past 5 years she has co-owned and operated a successful dog training business in Seattle as a certified trainer. Her first Basenjis Delphi & Shane introduced her to the world of dog sports and purebreds in It s been love ever since. AS IN ANY VOLUNTEER organization, people tire of sustaining pieces of the machine at some point. This year we have a larger than typical number of first time Board members and Committee chairs. It will take some time to understand what needs to be done and how to go about it, but it will be an opportunity to have new ideas and points of view focused on operations of the club that have been in place for decades. A goal of mine is to involve as many members as possible in the mission of the BCOA and try to limit the number of responsibilities that any one Board member or committee chair must assume. We always seem to have volunteers that possess the skills and experience needed to provide first class implementation of the tasks at hand and I am sure that will continue to be the case. I m sure the committee chairs will welcome participation from members at many levels so, if a project or committee has a mission that interests you, don t hesitate to ask if you could be of assistance. This issue of the Bulletin has an emphasis on Basenjis recently of Africa. The political and cultural changes in central Africa are happening at a rate not many anticipated. The natural resource rich areas of Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan are the sources of stressful changes to those areas that under other conditions might have not taken place for generations. As we fear for the future of the peoples in those regions we are aware that the existence and usefulness of basenjis is directly tied to the cultural fluctuations these people will experience. Any future expeditions to find dogs that can contribute to the genetic diversity that will be a critical issue for many breeds in the near future, will be decidedly more complicated than those of the past. There s a lot to like in the proposed program, which I hope the Board will approve. I like having a started category, which recognizes folks who get out and try multiple sports with their basenjis. I love the variety of versatility titles. And I m delighted with the recognition of the vast number of dog sports that now exist. When I started showing my Basenji, back when dinosaurs walked the earth, the only competition available was AKC Conformation, Obedience, and Tracking, and UKC Obedience. Now, I could show in a different venue, using different skills, almost every weekend of the year. There are multiple agility and rally venues, there s nosework, there s freestyle, and barn hunt just popped up what fun! I do a lot of performance events with my dogs, in a variety of venues. The training club I belong to primarily does NADAC and CPE agility, and APDT/WCR rally; now those titles will count toward versatility awards. Liza Lundell & FC, ARCH-MX Solar Kasai Celestial Dancer (Amelia) NA, BN, RAE, RL1X4, RL2X5, RL3X4, CPE2, RLVX, NAC, TNN, TGO KUDOS & PERMISSIONS Dear Editor, I am so impressed with what has been done with the Bulletin! I am almost done reading the current issue and have really enjoyed the range of articles. The entire magazine is so polished and appealing. And even though I enjoy keeping up with the conformation dogs, I am essentially just a pet owner and you are doing an awesome job of making us all feel included. Kudos to you. Marie Heidebrecht, Canada Dear Editor, My heartiest congratulations to you on the Bulletin. It looks fantastic is full of interesting articles, and has lots of photos. You have an article in this issue titled Serious K9 Conflicts. Is it possible for me to put this article in our B-Mail magazine that I am the Editor for? We have two different members of our Victorian Basenji Breed Association who are having problems with a couple of their dogs. It s an excellent article. Jan Robert, Australia 14 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at PHOTO MELODY HENKEL Won t say cheese HAVE YOU EVER found yourself looking at the photos included in an African import s submission application and thinking to yourself, Surely they could do better than that! Well, you are not alone. In mid-2012 the Native Stock committee asked and received feedback from judges, breeder-judges, importers, regarding the Native Stock application process. To give membership an insider s view on the difficulties of photographing native imports, we share, with permission, this candid, partially tongue in cheek, but accurate depiction of such a Herculean task. What part of the process, if any, did you find difficult to perform? Why? The toughest part of the process was getting photographs of the imports here, in the US, after one year of age. Obviously, this is 100% necessary for the application process, but people who have not been involved with importing don t realize how hard it is to get quality photos of these native dogs. I know that I didn t. I used to be one of those people who would look at the application photos and say to myself (and others), Gee, is that really the best photo that Famous So-N-So who is an extremely competent handler could get of this dog? In fact, I used to think to myself, If that s the best photo that this person could get of this applicant, then it really must be one sorry-looking dog, cuz this is not a photo that I can get excited about; I m looking for X-Y-Z fancy points and this photo does not demonstrate them, therefore this is a somewhat disappointing specimen. Order the 2012 BCOA African Stock Project CD This special CD contains the Original Foundation Stock, the 1990 Foundation Stock, and the 1990 Foundation Stock Direct Descendants. I admit that I said those things. What I know now is It.Was. Me.Who.Just.Didn t.get.it. Native dogs are camera shy and they do not want to be fussed with. I was diligent about stacking Naziki on a table and teaching her to free stack so that she would pose well for photos. I was hellbent to train her so that her virtues could be clearly seen in her application. Certainly I, Katie Campbell, can train a dog, right? Shortly thereafter I fell into The Humility Pit. I have trained Naziki to do many things, but show stack is not one of them. No matter what I do, she does not hold a hard topline when stacked on the table, and she does not want my body really close to her if/ when trying to manipulate her stance. There must be something intrinsically threatening about doing that because She.Just.Won t. Do.It. (Pat Marshall tells me the same is true for Makala who I had here for a month before I delivered her to TX.) I welcome the opportunity to add to the requisite standing photos, moving photos/video that are hands free and display how the dogs use themselves in locomotion. That is, after all, more important than how/if we can stack them on a show table, right? Katie Campbell Next time we look at two dimensional photographs of native imports or their first generation descendants and find ourselves starting to shake our head in disbelief, we might reflect back to Katie s words and have a better appreciation for all of the hard work that went into that horrible photo. 9 Clear by Parentage The goal is to breed away from Fanconi and pra & preserve genetic diversity. R ECENTLY, A BREEDING out of an untested male (out of a probableaffected x Clear by direct test) to an untested female (out of two probable clear Basenjis) was described as a carrier to clear by parentage breeding. This is incorrect and very misleading to unknowing puppy people. There is no such thing as a clear by parentage from two probableclear basenjis. Only DNA clear parents can result in clear by parentage and that is only for one generation. THE OFA CLEAR BY PARENTAGE POLICY For direct mutant gene tests only, such as the direct DNA Fanconi test, the OFA will issue clearances to untested offspring. Because of the possibility of new mutations or as of yet undiscovered gene mutations, only first generation offspring will be issued clearances under the following circumstances : 1 If the sire and dam have both been DNA tested Clear, and 2 If the sire and dam s DNA disease test results have been OFA registered, and 3 If all three (sire/dam/offspring) have been DNA identity profiled and parentage verified. A probable status associated with Fanconi testing was ascribed to Basenjis when the best tool researchers could provide was a linkage test. While very useful at the time, the results mean very little in the face of DNA testing. There have been probableclears who have DNA tested as carrier. Breeding two Basenjis who are untested, or tested only by the linkage test, is foolhardy. It flies in the face of the hard work of individuals who brought the breed the DNA test for one of our most pernicious diseases. There is no good reason to breed any untested/probableanything Basenjis. The Basenji Club of America required an open health registry for DNA testing so Basenji-breeders world-wide can benefit from the reports. Do not support those who do not support the breed. Do your homework. Breeding programs or practices that continue to ignore the DNA health testing available care little for the breed. Please advise potential puppy buyers that if one parent is not DNAClear for either PRA or Fanconi Syndrome, do not purchase one of their puppies. Basenji breeders should continue to breed carrier to clear, clear to clear, and, in exceptional cases, affected to clear for all dna direct tested recessive diseases. The goal is to breed away from Fanconi and PRA and preserve genetic diversity. B BASENJI CLUB OF AMERICA ON HEALTH TESTING Do you want a Basenji puppy from a breeder? Let s talk about Health Testing. Responsible breeders want to reduce the chance of their puppies having genetically inherited diseases. This is important not only for the long-term health of your future puppy but also the future of the Basenji breed. Some diseases are completely preventable and some are not. Health testing of the puppy parents before breeding, plus study and knowledge of the health history of their ancestors, is critical to accomplish this. Health testing is expensive. Breeders whose objective is making money off of puppies often skip all of this because it cuts into their profits. The Fanconi Syndrome dna test is a must Fanconi Syndrome is a late-onset, debilitating inherited disease in Basenjis. A simple DNA test for both parents is all that is needed to prevent it in puppies. At least one parent should test CLEAR/NORMAL. All Fanconi DNA test results are publicly available on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals ( website. Be extremely cautious of getting a puppy from a breeding where the Fanconi DNA test results are not posted on the offa website. Ask for the registered names of the parents and verify for yourself. Basenji Night Blindness A relatively new DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) can prevent the occurrence of one highly prevalent form of the disease in offspring. At least one parent should test DNA normal for Basenji Night Blindness. Test results are posted on the OFFA website. Testing of hips, eyes and thyroid are also recommended for basenjis and many other breeds. Hips, eyes, and thyroid results are listed if the breeder completed the tests and chose to have them listed. Learn more about Basenji health concerns at BCOA.org. From the first time Kevin and I saw Lema we imagined this pairing. This litter could potentially produce red, black, or tri pups. Ace has produced wonderful pups, champions on the field and in the ring. He has produced dogs who have enjoyed success in events such as Rally, Scent work and Agility. Lema produced an amazing litter her first time, two AKC pointed and one daughter a UKC Champion. We are very proud of the quality and outstanding temperament we see in her kids. My Basenji, Acacia is like a Cheetah cub, Because she is fast, agile and playful My Basenji, Acacia is like a Wolf pup Because she howls and she loves to run My Basenji, Acacia, is like a Hyena pup, Because she likes to chew on everything! by Ethan Walters, 10 years old, a poet-scientist in the making. TOUGH TOPEKA My dog, Topeka thinks she s a lot of things. Like goofy, cute and the boss. But, what she thinks most of herself, is that she is tough and hot stuff. This part of her personality can get annoying and quite funny. I guess it is just part of being a Basenji. Topeka always thinks of herself as tough and hot stuff. I don t know where she gets it from, but part of me just thinks Basenjis are arrogant. Or I think this could just be her, from my everyday experience. You see, when she is around familiar dogs or just ignoring me, I notice she acts different; she acts unlike her sweetie pie self. This dog thinks she owns the home. So if our other dog, Levi, which is an Australian Cattle Dog, comes in, she almost playfully defends her territory with a bite to the neck. But, poor Levi just helplessly stands there while she tugs on the flabby skin. Another time she does this is when she is defending food; it isn t even hers most of the time. Even if it is hers, old Levi is just walking by when; Bam! sharp teeth enter his skin. I feel bad for that poor old dog. But he just puts up with her. Topeka even thinks she is too good for me. That Basenji completely ignores me when I am speaking to her. No, I am not crazy; I just believe dogs can partially understand. Yes, she knows her name; I ve been saying it for the past two years. If all of this is true, then why does she turn her back on me? This is exactly what happens. First, I say her name while talking to her. Then, she cranks her head around or tilts her ears back to pretend to listen when she is really concentrating on the anonymous. What the heck, dog! Well, now that I have told you how this dog thinks of herself, which is high quality, I must get back to screaming my head off at that dog to get her butt over here! Or some other command. Just before she comes to my side I always manage a sarcastic smile to show that I love her. Thanks for listening. by Cagney Ehlers, 12 years old, keen observer of Basenji behavior. He ran to win back-to-back BOB 5-point majors at the Emerald Splash AKC coursing weekend. And received the Floyd Huyber perpetual trophy for having the highest overall combined score for all three days. Moose only needs four more single points to become the 5th DC in his litter! We look forward to finishing his RN, BN and racing titles in REMI : Our multiple BOB winner in conformation and lure coursing continued his winning ways. At the 2013 BCOA National NOTRA trial Remi went BOB and received an AOM at the 2013 BCOA National under Judge Judy Webb. B We re looking for stories this month about the judges you show to; good stories such as Atta Boys that come with a pat on the back, as well as stories about examination techniques and judging habits you would rather never see again. Most judges are interested in getting honest feedback from exhibitors and would really like to know if they are utilizing correct breed-specific techniques. Names may be withheld if desired, we have no interest in embarassing anyone, but compliments could certainly be passed along and quirky technique can be discussed anonymously in future seminars for the benefit of prospective judges. Funny stories and off-the-wall comments can be enjoyed by all and may appear in future reports. This request on the Facebook Dog Show Forum and the Basenji Breeders Discussion Forum prompted the following responses, please contribute your observations and concerns: Judges need to understand what the standard requires in terms of maximum and minimum white markings. It s important to educate judges about looking at wrinkle on blacks and tris from slightly behind the head rather than from the front. Give the first exhibitor time to stack their dog on the table. Check the bite after the table exam is complete! Have the exhibitor show the bite. The dog is happier and helps prevent spreading germs from dog to dog. Always approach a dog from the front so not to startle. Basenjis are table dogs. If you want to check anything on the dog again, never go over them on the ground. Put them back on the table for examination. It is less threatening than a judge hovering over them on the ground. Never uncurl the tail. Judges should keep their nails a reasonable length (not an inch long!) and refrain from strong perfume/aftershave (absolute no no!). Judges should be courteous and not talk to people in other rings while actively judging a class. Say hello to the exhibitor. It used to be that almost every judge said hello not only to the dogs also to the handlers, some even by shaking hands. Now it s a rare behavior. When I say hello on entering the ring or stacking my dog at the table I often get a confused look. Be welcoming to novice handlers. Judge the dog! My pet peeve with judges are the ones who are too interested in what is going on in other rings or talking to people outside the ring, to watch the dogs in the ring. Like my dog or not, I paid to be judged, so at least pretend to look at my dog! Don t keep taking assignments in the same area over a short period of time or at the same show every year. If you didn t like my dog today, you likely aren t going to like it in three months. Don t tell me you really liked my dog and not give it the win! The worst thing I have had a judge do is to turn suddenly and walk abruptly straight-on to a young basenji and grab his head. Apparently the breed s primitive origins and aloof with strangers temperament is lost on some of them. Don t be afraid to Excuse, Dismiss or Disqualify a dog from Competition. Especially an aggressive dog or a dog that bites while in the ring. On a good positive note there are judges I will show to thati know before hand that I won t win, just to get a pleasant experience for my dog/ puppy. But there are a couple of judges that you never show a puppy to. One because they don t have the patience if the puppy misbehaves, the other because they have repeatedly stated they won t give points to puppies! Several years ago Kent Delaney was judging. The person behind my dog really wanted to win breed because of the Group judge. She crowded my dog, ran up on my dog, tried to stand in front of my dog, anything to mess him up. Fortunately Moses was the kind of dog unfazed by anything! Kent Delaney reprimanded the handler for her behavior & took control of the ring. Another judge reprimanded a handler for repeatedly placing bait on the floor behind the dog stacked in front of her dog. Totally distracting the dog in front! Good judges don t let exhibitors get away with dirty tricks! We are also looking for the names of breeders and fanciers we can pass along when asked for suggestions for sweepstakes judges. Please let me know if you or anyone you know is interested in applying for judging approval in the near future and we can compile a listing for the benefit of all-breed and specialty clubs. As always, additional photographs for the slide show are welcome and very much appreciated. B 22 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 23

The club is active and will host our annual specialty in October. We welcome back former president and charter member Marianne Klinkowski to lead the club and Ed Boese as VP. Mary Jane Karas is now our very capable club secretary. Joni Boese, our returning treasurer, has many years of experience tracking expenditures and income for public and private entities. Our board members are: Donna Troyna, Pat Cembura, Della Sehm. And many thanks to club member Stormy Maddox for refreshing the club website and adding additional functionality. We welcome you all to our fall specialty! B BASENJI FANCIERS OF GREATER PHOENIX ARNIETA KURTZ On November 3 the club held our 11th Specialty and Sweepstakes. For the last few years we have held the show in a park in Apache Junction. This was a great place and afforded us plenty of room for a large ring. The only drawback was having to worry about the weather. Usually we have sunny skies and moderate temperatures at that time of year. However, rain is also a possibility. One year we had storms the day before the show and the day after. Our day was great, but we can t count on that type of luck. The park would not approve large tents (and neither would our budget!) So, the decision was made to try a new venue indoors at a hotel/convention center. This proved to work out well for us. Though we might have liked a larger ring for a specialty, it was adequate and met AKC s requirements. We had to cover the entire room with plastic to preserve the carpeting. There was enough room for seating, crating, and the trophy and raffle tables. The hotel also provided breakfast items and coffee, as well as box lunches and a separate room for the lunch break. Our sweepstakes judge was Robert Churchey of Mesa. He teaches all-breed handling classes and handles several breeds, as well as his own Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Tibetan Spaniels. Our regular class judge was Wanda Pooley, well-known basenji breeder and exhibitor, and now judge. The day proceeded smoothly (as smoothly as a large gathering of basenjis and their people can!) After the show many exhibitors, our judges, and club members gathered at a local Mexican restaurant for a convivial evening. B THE MID-ATLANTIC BASENJI CLUB BY LEEBETH CRANMER The MABC has been busy this fall and winter. In September we did clean-up at the Old Dominion Kennel Club s annual fall show. The weather was beautiful for the outdoor show and serving as the pooper-scooper patrol is an easy way to raise money for the club while having the opportunity to watch the all the gorgeous breeds at the show. On Saturday October 12th, the club hosted a BCOA-supported entry at the Cantonsville Kennel Club show in Maryland. Mrs. Julie Dugan judged Puppy and Veteran Sweeps and Mr. Johan Becerra-Hernandez judged the regular classes. Due to great club support, we were able to offer very nice trophies for the winners including a ceramic cookie jar filled with dog treats, laser-engraved matte frames featuring an African theme with Basenjis, dog beds, leather leads, martingale collars, Basenji magnets and key chains and African-themed dog toys. The BCOA provided medallions and rosettes. Best of Breed went to the lovely GCH Dark Moon s Tilt-A-Whirl with breeder/ owner/handler Veronica Predale. Best Puppy in Sweeps went to the smooth-moving black and white girl Tammen s Defying Gravity, handled, owned and bred by Laura Gilchrist. Best Veteran in Sweeps was taken by the still handsome BVSW GCH Khani s Katoomba JC shown and owned by Julie Hartigan. Before we knew it, it was December and time for our annual meeting and holiday party. Members and Basenjis gathered at the Carroll Country Agricultural Center in Westminster, Maryland, on December 1. The holiday party is one of the club s biggest yearly events. It always offers an opportunity to see old friends, meet everyone s new Basenjis and reacquaint ourselves with Basenjis we ve watched mature over the years. And, of course, there is always the food! The day started with a delicious potluck lunch. It was followed by a club meeting. The club is preparing to host the 2015 BCOA National in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After the meeting the fun continued with a present exchange featuring five mystery gift bags. If you ve ever played the mystery gift game, you ll know that when your number is drawn out of a hat, you may chose to pick a regular present off the table or a mystery gift. If you choose a regular gift, you may open it then and there and it is yours. Clockwise from the top: Darlin McDaniels arriving with her Basenjis; Gail chooses a mystery gift; Kim Brown with her puppy. If you choose a mystery gift, you cannot open it and others have the opportunity to steal it from you until the game is over. MABC members must be taking lessons from their Basenjis because there was a lot of crafty stealing going on this year! After the lively gift exchange, Sid Sher served as auctioneer for our fundraising auction of all things dog- and basenji-related. Many members were able to find exciting Christmas gifts for their dog-loving friends and family members. Currently our education committee is preparing to attend the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club s Canine Learning Experience in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Six members, with their Basenjs, will run an education booth at the annual event on Saturday January 25. The theme for the booths this year is Matching Breeds to Owners, and we plan to have fun with our interactive booth. The MABC encourages people in the Mid-Atlantic region who are interested in Basenjis pet or show to visit the club at or on Facebook at pages/mid-atlantic-basenji-club. New members are welcome. 15 Brushy RunAvongara Bev Bland with Linda Siekert the breed. It was called Hemolytic Anemia (HA). Later I discovered Dr. Gene P. Searcy in Canada had developed a test for HA, but could not offer it to the breed fancy until he could prove its accuracy. With a heavy heart, I cooperated with Dr. Searcy by repeating the breeding, and sending him the two HA affected puppies from the ensuing litter. I knew what the emotional cost was, yet I also knew the ultimate cost to the breed if I did not try to make a difference for future generations. Until he received these girls, Dr. Searcy had never been able to keep an HA-affected female alive long enough to produce a litter. Together, these two girls produced ten HA affected puppies which allowed Dr. Searcy to prove his test was accurate; he was then able to offer a test to all Basenji breeders. Eventually HA became known as Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency and I believe it is now very rare to find a carrier in our gene pool. But more importantly, I ve always believed genetic diversity was the key to the long term survival of any breed. I was at a stage in my domestic breeding program where I wanted to introduce an outcross into my line. I was concerned that going outside to other lines could mean the risk of introducing Fanconi, the next looming can pup who became Avongara Mwanzoni (Zoni). Zoni produced very well for me and she has figured rather prominently in my pedigrees through her daughter, Avongara Nafuu of Brushy Run, who went on to produce Avongara Rease of Brushy Run; Zoni s genes are now carried on in many countries. Zoni was a terrific introduction to the Africans. She claimed me as hers and become my forever African heart dog. What has been the most challenging in breeding a pure Avongara line? Having to choose which of my dogs to maintain and apply in my breeding program. My dogs are family first; breeding stock is a secondary consideration. The Africans offered so many valuable traits it was a challenge deciding which ones to go forward with as I have always wanted only the healthiest and most conformationally correct dogs to include in my breeding program. My original intent was not breeding full African litters. I started out breeding the Africans to my known domestic stock to draw out the African s genetic characteristics. Knowing how many years it Pinning Bev Bland down is like trying to hog tie one of the flying monkeys of Oz, it s near impossible to do. I persevered and corralled her one Sunday afternoon at her home, where I found her barefoot on rough desert terrain, assisting her son and grandson in pruning a large, overgrown tree. A FTER WATCHING BEV manhandle some rather large branches, I eventually steered her away, where she promptly took me to her corner side yard to show off her most recent 100% Avongara acquisition (from Australia, no less), Redial Avongara Badrani, or Rani, who was busy leaping vertically 4 to 5 feet in the air, at the tender age of four-and-a-half months. An agility enthusiast myself, Rani s springing ability duly impressed. Rani is a son of the black and white girl, Avongara Opal of Brushy Run. Yes, Virginia, Bev s pure Avongara line produced a litter containing three true recessive black and whites. Rani was bred by Opal s owner, Australian breeder/judge Len Reddie. After a few more diversions, we finally managed to head out the door for a bite to eat and some conversation before we headed over to the Basenji Fanciers of Greater Phoenix 2013 Specialty. About Bev Bland Bev has been breeding under the kennel name Brushy Run since 1968 (having owned Basenjis since 1962) and was one of the founding members of the Basenji Fanciers of Greater Phoenix. She produced her share of AKC Champions in a very small breeding program, many of which were also Canadian and Mexican Champions, including a Mexican Best in Show. She even garnered a CH/CD Basenji in one of her first litters, Ch Brushy Run s Sir Chadwick, CD. Through selective breeding, and stringent health testing, Bev has maintained one of the healthiest domestic lines still in existence. I have always wanted to know why someone, who developed a conformationally correct, healthy, and long-lived line of Basenjis, would be remotely interested in what some within the fancy used to disparagingly refer to as African mutts. What moved her to not only consider adding genes from unproven native stock directly out of Africa but continue breeding these genes some 23 years later? I set about asking questions. What drew you to the original Avongara imports? This answer has many different levels. My first domestic litter of Basenjis had one puppy that was extremely anemic. I had three very young sons at the time and had to lie to them about sending the pup off to live elsewhere, when in truth the pup had to be euthanized. I would come to learn there was a fatal blood problem in UKC CH Avongara Rai of Brushy Run, JC Brushy Run s Nirvana James I couldn t resist doing full African breedings as I felt the pure Avongara genes should be shared with other breeders. health crisis within the breed. When the first African imports were brought back to the US, I saw them as an opportunity to improve the genetic diversity of the breed. I had no indication, at that time, there would be more trips to Africa so I assumed it would be my only chance to acquire true diversity. Although the genetics of the native dogs were unknown, the sheer fact they had survived in the jungle gave me hope they offered healthy genes; so I took a chance on the Africans. In 1990 I approached Wilma Bauer, who owned native import Avongara N Gola, and made arrangements to purchase a full Afrihad taken to reveal less-than-desirable genetic traits in domestic lines, I wasn t sure how many generations of domestic/african out-crosses it would take to uncover the good and bad secrets African genetics might hold. After producing blends like Brushy Run s Que and his son Brushy Run s Indubitable SC, I couldn t resist doing full African breedings as I felt the pure Avongara genes should be shared with other breeders. Just about the time I felt I d achieved the conformation I desired in my full African pups, I was diagnosed with stage four ovarian 28 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 29

Avongara Black Opal of Brushy Run Avongara Siri of Brushy Run, JC Avongara Pepe of Brushy Run Avongara Ding of Brushy Run Probably the most exaggerated misconception is the belief the Avongara are the product of mongrelization of European dogs on to a number of his descendants such as Avongara Ding of Brushy Run, Avongara Bizi of Brushy Run, Avongara Buddy of Brushy Run (to name just a few). Another, Avongara Adabu, didn t quite match Z in movement but his son Brushy Run s Que and his grandson Brushy Run s Indubitable SC certainly did. What traits do you feel the breed should have? Basenjis are hunters. I appreciate their elegant look with their relatively short muzzles and fine skin producing diamond shaped wrinkle on their forehead while small alert ears stand at attention above eyes that don t miss a thing. Conformation wise, they should be a strong, sound moving dog, able to easily navigate different types of terrain. I breed for a very sound dog with well laid back shoulder blades and upper arms, producing an elongated beautifully crested neck followed by a level topline, high tail set, and good shelf with powerful, well angulated hind quarters. This combination lends itself to very easy, clean flowing movement. cancer, which put a halt to everything except focusing on getting well. Many of those quality pups, which I d intended to include in the gene pool, went to pet homes instead. Thankfully, and in spite of my ills, there are a number of Brushy Run Avongara residing with breeders around the world. What has been the biggest surprise? The biggest surprise has to be those unusual Avongara colors. Yes, I have produced some non-standard colors with the Avongara, and while I have never buried their existence, I do not purposefully breed for these colors either. The first time I encountered a truly rare color was with Avongara Siri of Brushy Run. Her litter mates were your typical red and whites, but right from birth it was obvious Siri s color was unusual. Siri s coat color looked very much like a light blue fawn with typical Irish white markings. She had tan eyes, and charcoal eye rims and nose leather. Siri was registered as a cream and white because blue fawn was not an AKC color option for Basenjis. While I personally found her color attractive, reactions from the fancy were mixed. In many breeds, dilute colors are associated with chronic skin issues and/or overall health problems. Not wanting to throw the baby out with the bathwater based purely on color, nor wanting to perpetuate, or breed, solely for/against color, Siri was bred only once, with her red and white offspring going to several well-known US breeders. Siri lived to the ripe old age of 15 years, without chronic skin issues or health problems, as did her sisters, Avongara Njozi of Brushy Run and Avongara Mwezi of Brushy Run, who lived until age 16 and 15, respectively. The second color surprise occurred in 2007 when a 5th generation Avongara x Avongara breeding resulted in three true recessive black and white puppies in one litter (true to mean not a speck of tan hair can be found anywhere in their coat unlike the better known Fula blacks ). After seventeen years of experience and five generations with my Avongara line, I was floored with such a unique result, just as I imagine VTW was when the first tricolors appeared. Two of these recessive blacks have been bred, Avongara Black Opal of Brushy Run and Avongara Pepe of Brushy Run. Another very important attribute my Avongara have surprised me with is their ability to produce well angulated, extremely sound fronts and rears in every generation. Oh, and one more thing : they are not totally deaf to the word come as they do seem to like to please their owners; well, most of the time. What is the biggest misconception of the Avongara? One misconception is the Avongara are aggressive or ill-tempered. If one was to research my full Africans on the African Stock Project pages via the BCOA website, more often than not you will find words/phrases like, loves people!; extremely gentle with toddlers and babies; playful, gentle, loves the attention of all people; friendly and accepting of strangers. Aggressive/ ill-tempered Avongara have not been my experience when breeding purely African lines, but then I always recommend a lot of early socialization with Basenji puppies be they domestic, pure African or blends. Probably the most exaggerated misconception is the belief the Avongara are the product of mongrelization of European dogs traveling with their white owners throughout Africa. Since the first imports were brought back in 1988/89, at least seven generations of Avongara x Avongara have been bred. And while there have been expected source population variations such as amount of tail curl, amount of white, non-standard colors, etc., these Avongara x Avongara breeding s have always produced consistent Basenji type. More to the point, they act and sound like Basenjis, too. Yes, there are occasionally some who are a bit short on leg/long in body, or show a slight drop to the tail, or even less curl to their tail, but even our original breed founders of the late 30 s didn t have traits such as triple curled tails, rich red coats, or clear demarcation between the red and black of the tricolors right out of Africa. Single loop tail curls were very common back when the breed was first developed, reds were not a rich bright red, and eyes were sometimes quite light, while sizes and weights also varied significantly. I guess what I am meaning to say is the Avongara do not have the cookie cutter look of the current domestic population. However, I see this as a plus to the breed, not a minus. Just as we used to be able to recognize Basenjis from different kennels from a distance, these variances in kennels and in the Avongara signify different genes which ultimately can offer the breed more diversity in the future. So many dog breeds are experiencing wide-spread health issues and are so inbred they have no unrelated lines to breed to. Basenji breeders are very fortunate to have a means of introducing new genes to the breed by way of native stock. So often we hear long time breeders talk about proper movement, referred to as floating movement, which we see very little of anymore. Have you seen this movement in any of the Avongara and if yes, which one? This floating movement is easily felt through the leash. I equate it to a kind of lightness at the end of the lead. AM/CAN/MEX Ch Arizongo s Zeus was my domestic that best typified this movement, while Avongara Zindika Brushy Run CGC CDX, or Z, came the closest of any Avongara I have seen, or felt, on lead. Z passed this soundness of movement, proper reach and drive, and effortless gait What is your goal for your line of Avongara? When I first started in the breed, my goal was to produce a healthy Basenji who displayed a sweet, steady temperament, longevity of life, and the conformation necessary to accomplish the job they were originally intended for in Africa. I have always been proactive regarding the health of my Avongara; I incorporated OFA testing for patella s, hips, and heart before breeders had begun to bring these genetic issues out into the open. Hip Dysplasia in Basenjis appeared in the early 1960 s but most breeders did not talk about it, much less test for it. At last count there were thirty-nine Avongara bearing the Brushy Run suffix in the OFA database, which comprises roughly 138 test results (cardiac, elbow, patella, hips, CERF all normal; thyroid all normal sans one equivocal; Fanconi, all DNA clear/probable clear; and PRA, all DNA clear). All of my Avongara breeding stock have also had their parentage verified via parental DNA testing. I feel my continued integrity and adherence to the health and welfare of the breed lend themselves to the preservation of the breed. What do you want to be most remembered for? My goal, and what I want to be remembered for, is doing no harm to the breed, while leaving diverse, sound moving, healthy, long-lived genes for future breeders, be it with pure domestic, pure African or African/domestic blends. I want this wonderful breed to still be around, healthy and functional, for eons. B 30 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 31

LAURIE GREGORY NEW-AFRICANS IN EUROPE by Mia Löwbeer & Monica Massih Yulara basenji, Sweden Jon and Vicky Curby, Furahan Asuma Almani, Furahan Asuma Amani and Furahan Asuma Adili. Gali s offspring Top: Yulara Okapi, lure coursing champion Left: Yulara Tamarack PBIS placings and one CC Right: Ch Yulara Oribi finished her conformation championship. We have followed the new-africans from the start. We had a great granddaughter of Fula of the Congo in Then came the imports in We had an opportunity to visit Carol Webb in 1992 and saw some of the full and the first half-africans. In 1998 we visited Damara Bolté at Reveille and met Mbliki. We asked her for a ¼ new-african, an Avongara Mbliki granddaughter, and in 2001 she came to Sweden our dear Taimi, Ch Reveille Thymeshare to Yulara. EARLY AFRICAN IMPORTS The influence from the New-Africans imported can be seen all over Europe. The first ones which arrived were mostly brindles, they were half New African or even more diluted. It was so exciting to finally have the color here. It was finally recognized by the FCI in After that a lot of brindles have been imported and have done very well at the shows. The color is here to stay and so is the new influence of the genes. And of course reds, blacks and tris with the new blood have been imported as well. Not as many full-africans have come to Europe. In 2004, two full-african siblings, Avongara Msuko of Brushy Run & Avongara Mwana of Brushy Run, arrived in Finland. They were imported by three breeders and that insured the progress would continue. Several litters have been born with some nice Basenjis; one that springs to my mind is FICH and LC CH and racing CH Ajibu Dixie Rose. In 2006, a bitch came to Sweden from the USA: Avongara Jini of Brushy Run as well as her sister, Avongara Zazi of Brushy Run, who now lives in Denmark. Avongara Imba Tena s daughter Saga out of Africa had a litter in Sweden; her son, Ch Faraoland Saga Zulu, has certainly made an impact on the European Basenji scene through his son multi-ch Faraoland Point Taken. Another Saga offspring, Ch Unique Creation Out Of Africa, was foundation bitch for the Enigma kennel in Sweden. NEW AFRICAN IMPORTS In 2006 three imports from Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)came to Kokojambo Basenji in Germany. One, Avongara Buyatoli, has had two litters. Then a half New-African, an Avongara Luka daughter, came to Germany and another Luka daughter has arrived in England. Recently two of Avongara Naziki s grandchildren arrived in Europe: one to Denmark and one to Germany. In 2007, Mia was invited to join the trip in 2008 to DRC and got our own full-african, Gali (Avongara Angali), as well as Samuel, (Avongara Asuma) who lives in Finland. The recently imported full-africans are already incorporated in our breeding pool here in Europe. Avongara Jini of Brushy Run has grandchildren in Finland through Twigas Thimba and in Germany and Estonia through Twigas Nonea. A few have been bred to old domestic lines and it is nice to see how well the new blood has mixed with the old. Avongara Angali and Avongara Asuma My own Gali, SE LCCH Avongara Angali, has had two litters with a total of 11 puppies: two girls and three boys in the first litter; and one boy and five girls in the second. Her first litter was by our own SE LCCH Yulara Jarrah. A nice typey litter: Ch Yulara Oribi, has finished; SE LCCH Yulara Okapi is a lure coursing champion and also the winner of the AKC LC at the National 2012; Yulara Owama in Finland has a LC CC and has shown with an excellent and CQ. We plan to use Oribi and Okapi in our 2014 breeding program. Yulara Osomo has sired the first of Gali s grandkids. He was bred to Miss Amazing s Field Silverglow. The boy, Yulara Tilo, has been shown with an excellent and his brother Yulara Tamarack has PBIS placings and one CC towards his title so far. Gali s second litter out of Senjabi My Sweet Desire (import NZ) is also a nice litter, one boy and five girls. Puppies went to breeders in Germany, Holland and Finland. The boy, Yulara Rooibos, is in Sweden and we are planning to use him in our breeding program. Yulara Ruya, in Germany, is an extremely capable runner and does both oval racing as well as lure coursing. In 2013 she won all the racing competitions she was entered in. She also has a BIF from lure coursing and she won a lure coursing competition in Sweden. Yulara Ruqaya, in Holland, has had all her health tests done with excellent results, litter planned for Yulara Rowan, in Finland, has also started off great in lure coursing with a win at her first start; it was her only start, due to motherhood she just had a litter of four boys and one girl. Exciting litter with high expectations! Avongara Asuma, Samuel, has sired two litters so far, one for us in Sweden and one for his owner, Furahan, in Finland. He has thrown his gorgeous coat to all of his offspring! His first litter, out of Yulara Kokopelli (B&W), was a nice litter of three. Yulara Pondu (B&W) went to Austria were she is on her way finishing her title, she has three of four needed CCs. She is planned to be bred in Yulara Poko Bitima (B&W) was the top lure courser in Sweden Yulara Papaya finished her LC title, won the African Match at the Swedish Specialty show and shown with excellent and CQ. Papaya also had her first litter (five pups). Samuel s second litter was in Finland, out of Furahan Hadu Bia, all red. He is now the grandsire of two litters. The achievements of the new Africans here are really amazing. They have proven to be typey Basenjis, great Basenjis to live with, they excel in the field, they are smart and fun, they have a very nice activity level, very easy to reward and love to work, proven by Gali and Pippi winning the rally-o at the National Health tests have been done on quite a few with excellent results. All puppy buyers are pleased with their half and quarter new-africans. They are very active with super temperaments, very talkative a lot of great yodelers and great companions! Overall the new-africans have been very well received in Europe. Breeders in several countries have new breeding stock and the next generation s litters are already on the ground. The future looks very promising. B 32 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 33

Lokoso Native Offspring by Lisa Saban Seven weeks-old and a future lure courser. n the 2010 trip to the Dem0cratic Republic of Congo with James Johannes, Bryan Gregory and Laurie Gregory, I found Lokoso. She was older than the other pups and a bit feral (all the hunting dogs are this way as they get older; much of their sustenance is from self foraging on insects, small rodents, etc). She obviously had been foraging on her own. Lokoso is, and I have heard this from most owners of African imports, uniquely attuned to her human. I call her my telepathy dog. She is empathetic and reads signals like no other. I have discussed this with several of the owners of Africans and with some of the lead dog behavioral researchers and the consensus is the Africans are bred via natural selection, to be this way. Enhanced reading of humans likely makes them better hunters and also gives them a higher success rate at getting handouts. Better hunters and increased handouts equates to better health. Better health means more potential to successfully pass on their genetic material. The behaviors of the imports are coded in their genes. Hopefully these behaviors can also be preserved as we move forward integrating the imports with the domestics. Tess, at six weeks. We call her Little Lokoso as she looks so much like her mother. Lokoso has had two litters of puppies to date. We bred her to Bronze GCh AOM DC Southhouse Jumoke Ltle Big Man Malawi, SC FCh in 2011 and she produced six puppies. And she was bred to Baraka s Over the River, SC in 2013 and produced four puppies. Both litter s eyes were open at 10 days and could hear around the same time. They were up and running (albeit more like wobble/ crawl/run) at two weeks. The growth rate was phenomenal from birth to four months. Then it slowed. Both litters were nocturnal. They would play all night and sleep most of the day. Once old enough to go outside, they would never venture out after dusk. It seems to be ingrained in their DNA. You could not drag them outside. I also found the puppies to be a bit wary of dogs that do not look like Basenjis. This also could be due to my situation as I live in the country, but I try to get them out and socialize as much as possible. I waited a bit longer with this second litter and taking socialization very slow with strange dogs. It s working much better this time. My sense is (but would be interested to hear others thoughts) that they are so pack-oriented that they need to get to know the other dog first. They really need one-on-one and time to assimilate another dog s personality. Then, like any good Basenji, they will decide if they like them! They definitely hate high-energy in-your-face dogs. They consider this very rude (which it is). Of course that is not unique to fullafs no Basenji would like that. The Africans just seem a bit more wary. With good cause I am sure. Lokoso is a fabulous mom, as I hear from everyone who owns a foundation dam, and weaned them on her own at her own timeline. She had all of them on a very regimented feeding schedule. She would make a warning sound if she heard a coyote or saw a bald Eagle overhead and all the puppies would scamper to their whelping box and sit and watch her. Very well trained puppies. (Lokoso should teach obedience!) She hunts for them and will catch mice to give them (still alive) for the pups to play with. If you know Lokoso (translated the greedy one ) this is amazing as there is no food, alive or well-cooked, that Lokoso would turn down. Mice are simply an appetizer for Lokoso to gulp down in one swallow. Lokoso continues to monitor and care for her two year olds. They are definitely a pack and now they are welcoming the new pups. There is a lot of variability within and between the litters, as can be expected with an outcross. But some general themes are emerging. Great structure and in particular great fronts. These dogs could work all day. They have very sweet personalities and more tuned in to humans, as described above. They want a job. They have all of the typical Basenji characterature traits. Within the above general themes, I see a lot of variability. I knew from early on that Lokosa s daughter, Kakala, would excel in obedience/rally/agility. She is lightly built and very attuned to what I want her to do. Kekan, her son, was more aloof and wary from the start. He is my feral pup. I kept him to see how he would mature and he has turned out to be a very independent thinker. He is excelling at tracking. Once you have Kekan s trust, you are a friend for life. I absolutely adore this Basenji. He catches his own wild food (mice, squirrels and birds) as part of his diet, just like his mom (I do try to not let this happen but it does). I am looking forward to integrating these Basenjis into the domestic gene pool and also assisting in keeping an African import gene pool going strong for use many generations down the road. I would be very interested in seeing BCOA organize or track an African import semen bank for use many generations in the future. I have two of Lokoso s first generation (Kekan and Junior) collected and will collect from Buckley (the single boy from her second litter). I feel very lucky to have had this experience and its taught me much more about dogs, their behavior, correct conformation, their abilities and need to work and above all, empathy. 19 Wars in Basenji Lands By Bill McCann Woman in a Central African Republic village, 14 January 2014 Photo Reuters, used with permission 2 CENTRAL SOUTH AFRICAN SUDAN REPUBLIC DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO MILLION PEOPLE in three adjacent nations in central Africa have been displaced by wars, wars in places that are home to Basenjis and the near kin of our own Basenjis. The Central African Republic is a nation of 4.5 million very poor people who have the misfortune to live on top of diamonds and gold. Rival Christian and Muslim militias have massacred civilians and burned and pillaged each others communities. More than a million people, a quarter of the country s population, have been driven from their homes. Oil rich South Sudan is at the edge of civil war. A fight between Dinka and Nuer soldiers in the presidential guard on December 15 ignited a power struggle in the new nation s ruling party and sparked widespread ethnic killings. Feeding the conflict is economic inequality a condition likely to worsen. By the end of January a million people had been displaced by fighting. The resource-rich and relentlessly exploited Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to bleed from rebel militia attacks in the Kivu provinces to the east and along the troubled borders of Uganda and Rwanda. Recent unrest in the southern province of Katanga has displaced nearly half a million people. 36 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 37

TODAY S WARS RAGE in places where our own Basenji s near ancestors once lived. It s where the rest of our Basenji family lives today. You can count the generations back from your youngest puppies to their African forebears. It hasn t been that long since the first imports reached our shores. The Blean and Of the Congo dogs originate in southern most South Sudan where killing has escalated since mid-december. The Avongaras come from areas to the south in Uele Province Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Esenjos comes from further southeast in the Ituri Forest. The Ntombas are from the Bokelekila area in western DRC and the Lukurus from Salonga Park, DRC. War information lags. When news does come it is fleeting, fragmentary and difficult to assess. Then the consequences become visible and very, very difficult to look at. Even when I look closely I am far from seeing, really seeing conditions in more than the most fleeting and fragmentary ways. I come from a distance. I read The Guardian (UK), Reuters, the New York Times. The stories, the photographs, the videos are a google search away. I am amazed by the images. But understanding is difficult. There are fifty four countries in Africa. There are many languages, many cultures within the three central African nations in turmoil. There are all kinds of limits on my knowledge. I keep at it because I have to pay attention. Africa is home to Basenjis and humans, all of us. We are family. What happens there matters. Art from Africans themselves connects me to who is being hurt and who we are losing. The artist s witness offers context and perspective words cannot. It helps open my eyes and my heart to the great and diverse humanity that animates immense Africa at its very center, the same humanity that first bonded with our beloved Basenjis millennia ago and made possible my own Basenji family today in a city half a world away. 22 The Local Dog Breeder, Reinterpreted by Alison Smith Photography George Woodard First published in The Australian Shepherd Journal, January/February 2012 Reprinted with permission from the author We have an image problem. The purebred dog and its breeders are in trouble. Animal rights activists, in their purported efforts to reduce the numbers of dogs in shelters, are pointing an accusatory finger at all purebred dog breeders. They make no distinction between mass producers, backyard operations and hobby breeders. They are waging a war for the hearts and minds of the public and gaining ground each year. DOG RELATED ACTIVISM has generally been focused on puppy mills and laboratories, but recently a campaign has been launched that puts even the small, ethical show dog breeder in its sights. A group of activists stormed the annual Westminster show in New York City last year carrying signs bearing the same message found on their newly erected bill boards: Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs Chances. Legislation that would restrict or eliminate the ability of even the small est breeder to continue breeding is becoming increasingly successful. An aggressive strategy of propaganda geared toward convincing the public that all breeders of purebred dogs are unethical is proving quite effective. It seems to me that in spite of all the energy, time, money and commitment the majority of us hobby breeders put into doing this breeding thing the right way, the public s perception of us continues to erode. We are increasingly being painted with the same brush as puppy mills and the likes of Michael Vick. We are alternately puppy factories and dog show snobs. I had already seen T-shirts sporting hateful phrases like Mean People Breed Dogs and Screw Dog Breeders, but when I stumbled across an Adopt a Dog, Euthanize a Breeder bumper sticker, I knew it was time to act. Enough is enough. We are increasingly being painted with the same brush as puppy mills and the likes of Michael Vick. We are alternately puppy factories and dog show snobs. ARE WE TO BLAME? Nobody would debate the merits of keeping dogs out of shelters and puppy mills. And I m sure we d all acknowledge that issues of health and declining genetic diversity urgently need solutions. However, I would argue that we are not the bad guys here. According to recent studies, 1 it seems that the primary reason dogs end up in shelters is actually due to owner relinquishment. Purebreds make up about 20 to 30 percent of shelter inhabitants (accurate numbers are elusive, given the vagaries of breed identification). Many relinquished dogs are under a year old, and pets that were paid for are less likely to be represented. What if more owners had an engaged breeder to call for help guiding them through the rough spots or, if it came to that, to offer to take the dog back? Given how high the percentage of owner relin quishments is, it seems clear that effective owner selection, education and support would be a substantial piece of the solution. We experienced, knowledgeable breeders are in the ideal position to breed dogs that are well-suited to their work as pets and to inform and support the public. Our doing so may well help to reduce the flow on the spigot that fills shelters. The answer lies not in doing less of what we do, but in doing it even better. Look at it as preventative rescue. The propaganda has worked its magic on us as well as the public. We have internalized the notion that reputable breeders do not breed pets and our message to the public often reflects that. Our blame lies only in having allowed unscrupulous breeders to dominate the pet market. Imagining we are doing the right thing, we have actually stepped away from being part of the solution. How did we get here? THE P WORD Ethical breeders work hard to distinguish themselves from puppy mills. In an effort to separate ourselves from the exploitative, irresponsible practices of mass pet pro ducers, we are loathe to identify ourselves with the breed ing of pets. There is no greater insult in the world of dog fanciers than to be called a pet breeder as in Mary just breeds pets or Fido is just a pet. Breeders dread being tainted with the monicker of puppy mill. We are actually so conflicted about our roles as pet breeders, that the mark of a good breeder has, paradoxically, become minimal breeding. We actually one up each other with the number of litters we don t breed! As hobby breeders we are well-versed at staying under the radar lest we be accused of puppy milling. I m here to say that the more thoroughly we inhabit this I m not a breeder, really I m not ethos, the more puppies will be born and raised in unscrupulous hands. Potential puppy owners, if they choose not to adopt, will be forced to buy from the only source available to them brokers. We do not yet have a model for how to market ourselves as pet breeders while staying aligned with our ethics, but we must develop one. We certainly will not ever produce the num bers that broker-connected breeders do, but it s my belief that as a network we will have our own strength in num bers. Maybe one day we ll tip the balance. LOCAL DOG BREEDER NETWORK Eager to understand more about how we hobby breed ers can increase our visibility, I hit the internet. I began by imagining I was a prospective puppy buyer and googled all the obvious search terms. I was instantly inundated with a barrage of puppy for sale sites. It was obvious to me, but not necessarily to a lay person, that the majority of these sites were brokering puppies that had been mass produced all over the country. It was clear that some serious money and marketing expertise had been put into positioning these sites as the easy choice for the caring prospective puppy owner. Many sites pose as knowledgeable, ethical breeders right in your backyard. Although it s easy to list Codes of Ethics, antipuppy mill rhetoric, and generally talk the talk, there is one thing they can t do that we excel at being, quite literally, right in the client s backyard. Within driving distance. Neighbors. Local. Herein lies our collective strength. We really are visit able, willing to lend a hand, and answer calls with crate training questions. We are eager recipients of cute photos and stories (who else cares like grandparents!). We can provide real family raised puppies, sold directly to their new owners (no middle men need apply). Because clients can visit, they can make their own decisions about what kind of early environment will provide the best preparation for a life in theirs. Small, local breeders are also able to offer a lifetime 42 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 43

safety net to all their pups. Public education can emphasize these points as must-haves in any considered puppy search. This doesn t mean we never sell puppies out of our own area, just that people local to us can find us. And want to. Given the recent awakening of the public to the value and pleasures of all things locally grown, it seems a perfect time for us to fully inhabit our roles as the local experts the ideal place for puppies to be born and raised. No rea son we can t be local hero dog breeders: small, sustain able, ethical and accessible. And preferred. PRINCIPLED PROFESSIONALS In order to take back the pet market from puppy mills, we must embrace our roles as expert producers of ideal pets. We use the term hobby breeder to differentiate ourselves from commercial breeders. We must re-imagine ourselves not as hobbyists but as professionals; showing dogs our hobby and breeding pets our professional work. I don t believe, for a minute, that we need to give up our day jobs and start pumping out puppies, but I do think, as a nation al network of local breeders, we can have a real positive effect by embracing the pet side of our work. We must not be reticent about positioning ourselves as the only good choice for people who choose not to adopt. There is an important place in our increasingly pet-cen tric culture for the thoughtfully bred purebred dog. Dogs are not all interchangeable. One of the many reasons that pets are relinquished to shelters is that the dog, cute and cuddly as a puppy, has developed into an animal that does not meet the expectations or lifestyle of its owners any lon ger. It may have grown too big or hairy or active. Maybe it needs more training or exercise than anticipated. While a healthy, balanced dog that is a good fit with its owners can certainly be either pure or mixed breed, the ability of own ers to make choices about size, coat length, temperament and exercise needs can improve the chances that the dog they raise is the dog they keep. Historically hesitant to market ourselves as profession als in the area of pet breeding, we fear being seen as in it just for the money. Stepping away from this responsibility is not a principled answer. This is a stretch for most of us, allergic as we are to the idea of breeding pets in any delib erate way. We cringe at the very suggestion that we focus our breeding programs on the pet market, but we must. We owe it to dogs. They deserve to be born and raised in capable, humane hands. Being a professional does not mean we lose our ethics nor that we ditch our day jobs and start pumping out pup pies full time. We are understandably leery of anything that smacks of commercialism, but when we undersell ourselves we leave the market wide open to the unscrupulous and uninformed. I m certainly not of the mind that breeders should breed more than is comfortable for them or benefi cial to their dogs, nor that puppies be mass produced, only that committed, caring breeders should be the ones supply ing pets to the general public. VOLUNTARY ACCREDITATION Our roles as ethical, knowledgeable pet breeders can be enhanced by establishing a voluntary credentialing system. A measurable understanding of canine husbandry, genet ics, behavior, training, and health issues would help vali date our expertise and credibility. An award system such as the present Hall of Fame Kennel/ Breeder designation could be offered with points and levels along the way. Points might be earned through demonstrable evaluations of temperament and health of breeding stock and offspring. Earning Canine Good Citizenship and Therapy Dog titles, breed-specific health clearances, sharing health data, gaining and maintaining (through continuing education) certification as a knowl edgeable, experienced breeder might all be valuable as methods of reaching recognition as an Award Winning Companion Dog breeder. The requirements for this cov eted certification could be structured in such a way as to make brokering and mass production mutually exclusive with inclusion. Accountability to a code of ethics and stan dards that benefit today s pet dog and its owners would further When we alienate puppy buyers, we leave them no option but to pursue their quest for a puppy elsewhere. We miss the opportunity to prevent one more shelter admission. differentiate responsible breeders from those less reputable. At the moment, the most prestigious accolades and pro fessional feedback in the dog world come in the form of conformation wins. We don t yet have a structure in place to recognize and reward exemplary work in the breeding of pets, nor really even a definition of what that would be. If breeders received commendations equal to those reserved for a Westminster win (I know that s a stretch, but you get my drift...) in recognition of their work breeding companions, equal fervor and pride would be applied to that task. PUBLIC EDUCATION The general public could be made aware of the value of working with a qualified local breeder through marketing, media and exhibition events. Networks of local, certified breeders would meet the needs of potential puppy owners allowing them to see where and how their pups are raised and enabling relationship building between breeder and owner. This would both increase opportunity for client support and reduce the incidence of relinquishments to shelters. Learning how to present ourselves as trained, knowl edgeable sources for all things puppy will increase the like lihood that potential owners will choose to work with us. Our kennels, web sites and manner must be as accessible, professional and respectful as possible. Stories abound of puppy buyers who were turned off buying from a good breeder due to that breeder s attitude, lack of organiza tion, sanitation and excessively restrictive or complicated contractual arrangements. Helping a discouraged friend recently in her search for a dog, I was dismayed by how difficult it was to track down responsible breeders on the internet. Club web sites are often not optimized to appear first in Web searches and once they are found the befuddled potential pet owner must wade through club business and show schedules in order to find a frequently un-clickable membership list. Breed clubs might allocate a part of their rescue budget to increasing public visibility (search engine optimization, ads, handouts, etc). Posting club information in all the places we ve always avoided (newspapers, supermarkets, Craig s list, etc.) would make finding us so much easier for Jane and John Q. Public. Breeders websites frequently are devoted to the display of show dog triumphs and pious, confusing assertions that they are not interested in breeding pets. Easier to find and navigate were the websites of legions of less reputable breeders. My friend threw up her hands in frustration exclaiming Forget it! It s easier to go to a pet store! When we alienate puppy buyers, we leave them no option but to pursue their quest for a puppy elsewhere. We miss the opportunity to prevent one more shelter admission. Hobby breeders are a highly motivated bunch. They will ingly get up at 3:30 a.m. to drive five hours to a dog show, spend nights up bottle-feeding orphan puppies, commit huge sums of money to show entries, RVs, supplements, veterinarians and trainers. All in the pursuit of champion ship points and the respect and satisfaction that comes from a job well done. If we can harness just some of the ribbon chasing determination of thousands of highly moti vated, educated, ethical breeders and redirect it towards chasing accolades for accomplishments that would benefit the pet market, we would have an inextinguishable force that redefines pet breeding and helps keep dogs out of shelters at the same time. 24 SOCIALIZATION Teaching acceptable behavior PUPPY SOCIALIZATION we all know it s important and socialization has become a buzz word amongst most dog owners. How do you achieve a well socialized puppy or adult dog? Does it work the same way for all dogs? Even long time, experienced dog owners and breeders should occasionally take a step back and consider these questions to re-evaluate their programs. Through self-examination we can make sure we are doing our best to maximize each individual animal s potential and produce not only beautiful dogs, but puppies that are armed with the best chance of being superb family members. We are also charged with providing good, current advice for puppy owners so that their pets can be the best ones possible. TEACHING ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR First we have to ask ourselves, what exactly is socialization? According to Merriam-Webster s, socialization is the act of teaching (someone) or the state of having been taught to behave in a way that is acceptable in society. Teach is an important and operative portion of this definition, and a common unwitting misconception. When we socialize puppies, mere exposure to various types of humans, dogs and even other animals is insufficient. We must teach puppies, through pleasant experience, that these things are good and wonderful, and we must teach them how to interact in a safe and acceptable manner. Habituation is another important aspect of getting puppies ready for the world. Habituation is similar to by Andrea Stone socialization, but it is teaching puppies to become comfortable and accustomed to nonliving stimuli. We strive to socialize our puppies with people, and habituate them to things such as car rides, the sound of the vacuum, etc. These practices can and should begin at birth, and must continue through adolescence and into adulthood to produce the most stable and well versed dog possible. Never take good behavior for granted! The only guarantee anyone can make about behavior is that it can and does change over time. Turning a puppy out at a play group and allowing him or her to interact in whatever way he or the other puppies wish is not good socialization though it is certainly likely to teach the puppy something. It could be how to interact with other dogs his own age in a mutually enjoyable manner, but it just as likely to result in a dog that learns to be a bully or one that learns that other dogs are scary and to be avoided. When designing a socialization plan, breeders and dog owners must first decide what their expectations will be for their dogs as adults. Once a puppy owner knows what their ideal picture looks like, they can take steps to set their puppy up for success. Will my puppy be a performance dog expected to handle busy venues filled with noise, people and dogs? Will my puppy be my hiking partner, possibly hearing gun shots and running into people on horseback? Will my puppy live in the city or the country? All of these will help me figure out my socialization and habituation priorities, but the broader and more varied a puppy s experience the better equipped he will be to handle the world as an adult. PHOTO COURTESY OF TRACY LEONARD STAGES IN A PUPPY S LIFE Let s take a look at puppy development first. NEONATAL PERIOD BIRTH TO TWO WEEKS. During this stage puppies rely on their sense of smell and touch to navigate their world. Though they spend 90% or so of their time asleep, breeders can still begin introducing the scents, temperatures, textures and even the sounds (which will be perceived as vibration) of everyday life to puppies. Regular, repeated exposure that does not cause visible signs of distress is ideal. New experiences are always stressful anyway! TRANSITIONAL PERIOD TWO TO FOUR WEEKS. What a mile stone! Puppies eyes and ears will begin to open and their perception of the world will drastically improve. This is also the time where they begin walking and playing with littermates. If breeders haven t already had visitors coming to meet puppies, this is the time to start. If there are other household dogs, and the bitch is accepting of them (and if they are interested) this is a great time to allow at least limited access. Good common sense with regards to cleanliness and disease exposure are needed. Remove shoes and wash hands! Puppies are also beginning to have control over their own elimination and will attempt to move out of the nest to do so, so this is an ideal time to begin litter training. SOCIALIZATION PERIOD FOUR THROUGH 12 WEEKS. Some experts believe the socialization window stays open through 14 weeks, but most agree that it begins to close around 11 weeks and is closed by 14 weeks of age. This means that any stimuli that puppies have not been exposed to by this age will be perceived as inherently scary. It is during the socialization period in which puppy behavior is at its most plastic with regards to new experiences and situations, so breeders and puppy owners need to take advantage of it. Environmental stimulation will directly impact a puppy s brain development during this time as well - the more enriched the environment, the more developed the puppy s brain will become. SOCIAL ATTACHMENT AND FEAR PERIODS Between six and eight weeks of life is also when puppies are forming their strongest social attachments. They will typically remember people (and dogs) from this period in their development for their entire lives. This is part of the reason many breeders choose to place puppies at eight weeks of age. However, there is a fear period between eight and 12 weeks of age, during which puppies may respond to new stimuli with fear or suspicion rather than their previously demonstrated curiosity. As with social attachments, if there is a traumatic (to the puppy) experience during this period, it can last a lifetime. Great care must be taken! This is why some breeders choose to retain puppies a bit longer. But remember there is always a tradeoff. Breeders who keep puppies longer must be capable of meeting each individual puppy s socialization needs. The same is true of new owners who take pups at eight weeks this important time must not be wasted. Many trainers, including Dr. Ian Dunbar, recommend that young puppies need to have had good interactions with at least 100 people prior to the age of 12 weeks. 25 PHOTO COURTESY OF USCHI GREWE EUNICE OCKERMAN EUNICE OCKERMAN BARBARA SAUCEDA BARBARA SAUCEDA EXPERIENCING THE WORLD As soon as puppies are ambulatory (or really beginning in that neonatal period), breeders should be exposing puppies to a variety of floor textures (carpet, grass, tile, cement, gratings, pebbled surfaces, etc) as well as objects and obstacles, including small steps, ramps, wobble boards, things that roll, objects that flutter, clunk, make strange noises and those which may move of their own accord. Wet floors and dusty surfaces too! And don t forget sounds. Loud music, sudden bangs, buzzers, bells, recorded explosions (no real ones, please!), raised voices and the like are all very important. During all of this, however, it is important that breeders and puppy owners watch each individual puppy s response. Within a litter there can be significantly varied temperaments, which will affect how each one should be socialized and habituated to its world. Simply having a checklist and ticking off boxes is not good socialization. Each experience must be a pleasant one, and these experiences must be repeated. Meeting one man in a hat once before 12 weeks of age and not coming unglued does not compose good socialization. The puppy has to have met such a man multiple times and visibly enjoyed it. Uncomfortable puppies have three options: fight, flight and freeze. We want happy engagement! We must teach the puppy that men in hats are wonderful. Remember that key: teach. PUPPY S PEROGATIVE Often times when puppies show uncertainty or nervousness about a visitor, a new owner s response is that they must show or teach the puppy that said visitor is safe by pressing in closer and having the person feed the animal. However, as anyone who has ever had a spider phobia can probably tell you, having the object of your fears push in closer, even if they are offering chocolate cake, is not really going to help. The puppy may learn to tolerate the visitor in order to obtain the reward, but again, tolerance is not good socialization. The best approach is to allow the puppy to create the needed space, and then reward the puppy should he or she choose to approach the visitor. The visitor should ignore the puppy, or at least stop making eye contact. The owner should then offer praise and food rewards for brave behavior, while allowing the puppy to interact at its own pace. This is the best way to socialize with new people and dogs. If puppies are being held or carried, take care to pay attention to their body language. If they show signs of avoidance (ducking away, straining back) or anxiety (whites of the eyes showing, airplane ears, tension in the face), do not allow strangers to pet them. And always quit while you re ahead. Socialization and habituation outings should be short and sweet. Tired puppies are easily overwhelmed. When puppies are pushed past their ability to cope, well-meaning owners can sensitize their dogs to the very thing they were trying to socialize them to. Puppies sensitized to the approach of strangers may begin to display avoidance or, worse yet, eventually even aggression. Jean Donaldson describes each puppy s socialization needs as a box, and when that box is full the puppy is well socialized (or habituated) to that stimuli. Each individual is going to have a different sized box for each person or thing, so what might be enough for one puppy will be insufficient for another, even within a litter. That s why it is so important for breeders and owners not to fall into the I ve always done it this way and never had a problem frame of mind. Look, watch, and listen to what each puppy is telling you. If you do this, you can respond to their needs. Don t push puppies into uncomfortable situations because they need to learn to put up with it. Stop, back off, reassess your approach and teach the puppy that it is fun, wonderful and non-scary. PLAY GROUPS & TRAINING CLASSES Puppy owners should take puppies to play groups where puppy interactions are monitored to make certain that each dog is having a good experience. Classes should also begin right away; There is no reason to wait until vaccinations are completed 1. Do observe good common sense by avoiding unregulated or unmonitored areas with high dog traffic, such as dog parks. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSaB) recommends that puppies begin class at between seven and eight weeks of age, provided they have had their first set of vaccinations. According to AVSAB, Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age. 2 Many behavioral problems stem from poor or improper socialization. In my experience as a professional trainer, working with both puppies and adults the vast majority of aggressive behavior is a direct result of under socialization and habituation or dogs having been forced to tolerate uncomfortable situations until they could no longer put up with it. I have also witnessed, through my clients, the results of puppies sequestered away during critical periods, due to misinformation and disease. Sadly, most of these dogs and their families struggle to one degree or another throughout the dog s life. Dr. Sophia Yin and Dr. Ian Dunbar have both authored some great books on puppies as well as many others. Play groups and classes are an invaluable source for safe, controlled puppy interactions. Be sure to learn to read dog body language 3 and respond to what your puppy tells you. Create multiple, brief and very pleasant interactions for new pups with as many varied people, places, things, sounds and dogs as you can. B 1 This article is written with the United States in mind. State of vaccination and safety in canine population may vary in other parts of the world 2 See AVSAB s website for more information 3 Dr.Sophia Yin has a lovely poster available for download at And there are many DVDs available to buy or rent on the topic of canine body language from TawzerDog ( and Dogwise ( 48 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) 49

Basenji puppies : year one a loving look at their first 12 months Getting tight in here! Hey! I m moving! Squeeeeeze and plop. (lick lick lick nudge nudge) Here I am! (suck suck suck) time passes Hey! There are fuzzy things moving around me. Something is picking me up and breathing on me. time passes I can walk! I can see! World, I m ready for you (plop). Oops. Shake. I can make these wobbly things work. If I push myself up, on my back legs, I can look out at The World. Chris Maxka The ex pen, a rapidly proliferating cell in my living room, expands around pee pads, pellet trays, newspapers, bowls, visitors, me. I sit inside on ducttaped vinyl remnants (lavender odor removal struggles to keep up) with disintegrated pine pellets as well as needle teeth stuck to my socks, and I see, smell, hear, taste, touch puppies until they and my legs fall asleep. Marcia Woodard So sweet. Their little wrinkled brow. Everything is new and exciting! A leaf in the wind! A squirrel! A plane flying overhead! An ant on the floor! All must be thoroughly investigated. They are sponges, learning new things every day. I tried in vain for days to get Jigsaw to sleep in her crate until finally giving up and bringing her to bed. (Where she remains to this day.) I remember her mischievousness. I remember how much I loved those days!! Marie Heidebrecht 1 MONTH 2 MONTHS 3 MONTHS 4 MONTHS 5 MONTHS 6 MONTHS Sweet and adorable, cautiously curious and utterly delightful, Dora enchanted us from the moment she entered our lives at four months. Eager to explore and intrepid in spirit, Dora was also keen to rest in a lap or lie quietly in a patch of sunlight. She charmed us with her play-filled zest for life and relationships, as well as her trusting, invitingly inquisitive nature. What a gift she is! Kaete Elliott They want to be a big dog and pull every cute trick in the book to get the grown up dogs to play with them. What they are best at is being teenage babysitters to younger pups. On several occasions I have had the opportunity to have 5 month old pups babysit a younger litter and, just as with human children, the babysitter is far cooler than mom and dad. Young pups seem to be better behaved to try to impress older half siblings or cousins. Kevin & Therese Leimback Ready to be all grown up but enjoying all that comes with being a puppy. They just know they can still get away with acting silly in the ring and at home and I m certain they do it on purpose. They relish making you laugh and cry, knowing that they often can. At this age they sleep like rocks once you wear them out it just takes longer to do that! Denise Vertrees Three-four month old puppies are at a delicate stage. It is especially important not to use force or physical punishment at this age it can backfire and make them mean Debbie Hauri 50 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at

Enjoy your puppy their exasperating antics and their needle teeth. They will be adults soon enough Carole Kirk The youngsters are ready to trek the trails on-lead and off-lead. They started out slowly at three to four months, exploring in safe areas off leash with a seasoned adult to show them the ropes. Their natural instincts develop during their adventures and individual personalities become apparent. Do they pounce on everything with abandon? Or, are they cautious and calculating? Out on the trails with the big dogs they try to join the adults who are exploring far afield but keep a close eye on me and the safety of home base. When the youngsters come and check in with me, they always receive praise, treats, and a lot of enthusiastic atta-boys & girls! Their confidence grows! Barbara Sauceda 7 MONTHS 10 MONTHS Not yet adults but no longer puppies. Adult enough to stand while being examined on the table by the judge at a show, but still puppy enough to chase their tail during the down and back for the judge. Curious by nature, they are brave at trying new things and adapt to new situations, especially if they have adults (canine/human) they trust with them. Puppies who have been home raised with frequent, loving contact with humans are very trusting of humans at this age. Carole Kirk It is entertaining and astonishing just how BAD an eleven month old basenji can be. They are like a two year old child, exuberantly going from thing to thing to thing. Can I eat your chapstick? What about the couch? How about this wire? Hey look! My bone! My squeaky toy! A cardboard box! Hey can I eat your chapstick? Gloria Richards Steiger The puppies now have a real sense of who they are and all the puppy owners call and ask what has happened to their good puppies because the puppies are suddenly independent and teething they lose their potty training and won t come when called. Before this stage they haven t chewed as much but at this stage they chew a lot. And they can do damage because they have their big molars. Debbie Hauri 8 MONTHS 11 MONTHS A daily call from house-sitting niece Melina would not suffice while we were in Hawaii, so I set up a web cam. Now I can see the pups in Seattle anytime live on my phone while I m sunbathing on Oahu. It doesn t matter how grainy the image, the important thing is I can see them. It s soothing to just watch them breathing while they sleep. George Woodard At nine months we are experienced show dogs! We ve been to handling class and practiced in puppy matches. We re ready to take on the conformation world! Stand on the table? Sure! Oh wait a Stranger is now in my face and touching me where?! Now we get to run around the ring! Bouncing is so much fun! Now I ll run. Now I ll hop. Why is everyone laughing at us? The standing still part is easy. Lots of goodies to eat as the Stranger walks by. OMG! Is that string cheese? I ll just leap right up and grab it. Did I get your finger? Sorry. Hey! The Stranger just pointed at us! Mom seems really happy and just scooped me up in her arms and is giving me kisses. Yay we got this. Shelby & Jennifer Miller 9 MONTHS 12 MONTHS By twelve months you can t live without them! George Woodard 52 BCOA Bulletin (JAN / FEB / MAR 14) visit us online at

MOVING? CHANGE OF ADDRESS NOTICE IF YOU MOVE, please notify the BCOA Treasurer of your new address. Unless specifically requested, the USPS will not forward periodicals, such as the Bulletin, to your new address. Send all address changes to the Editor. It is suggested to send address changes also to the Bulletin Board Newsletter Editor, the Secretary & Treasurer to ensure the Club knows where you are in case of a move. To avoid missing your magazines, you must inform the Club of your address change. If we do not receive a Change of Address notice, the cost of a replacement issue is $9.00. The USPS charges $.75 for each incorrect mailing address, returns only the cover with a label affixed showing the new address, and destroys the remainder of the magazine. However, in the course of any mailing, if the USPS damages your magazine beyond use, you may receive a replacement copy at no charge. USE OF MATERIAL PUBLICATION POLICY ARTICLES & OTHER MATERIAL BCOA members are encouraged to send to the Editor anything they feel will be of interest. All materials, whether used or not, will be treated with consideration.
