1 LIVESTOCK PROJECT INFORMATION MEETING 2017 Presented by: SHAWANO COUNTY 4-H LIVESTOCK KEY COMMITTEE

2 New in 2017 VETERINARY FEED DIRECTIVE As of January 1, 2017: all medically important antibiotics to be used in feed or water for food animal species require a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) or a prescription. rces/pages/vfd123.aspx

3 COOL AFFADAVITS (Country of Origin Labeling) COOL forms are required only for sheep (and meat goats) currently. Not needed for beef and swine. Pick them up at Livestock Credit meetings available here tonight visit the UWEX Office or 4-H website

5 PRIOR TO INITIAL WEIGH INS All male animals must be castrated and Cleanly de-horned (no scurs or regrowth) Animals must be tagged with Shawano county or state fair ear tag!!! For members interested in participating at the WI State Fair, all rules, deadlines & entry information are available on their website at:

6 DNA SAMPLING & RFID EAR-TAGGING Exhibitors are responsible for RFID eartagging and collecting a DNA sample from all market animals to be shown at the fair. RFID ear tags and DNA sample kits must be purchased from the UWEX Office BEFORE YOUR SPECIES WEIGH IN DAY. $10 PER ANIMAL

7 DNA SAMPLING & RFID EAR-TAGGING(cont.) Exhibitors must send DNA samples and registration form DIRECTLY TO THE WLIC LAB and postmarked by MAY 8. The WLIC lab will provide a printout to UWEX of all youth who submitted samples by the deadline date

8 RE-TAGGING PROCEDURES Exhibitors must notify Species Chairperson immediately if an RFID ear tag falls out. Animal will be re-tagged by Species Chairperson. Exhibitors must purchase a new ear tag and DNA sample kit. This tag will be pink for quick identification at final weigh-in.

10 PAPERWORK NEEDED The following should be picked up before you leave tonight: Blue Rules Handout Gold Credit Meeting Handout Blank Contract Ear Tags (one per animal) ($10 per tagging kit) COOL form (sheep (and meat goat) members only) FFA Members: Livestock Financial Record

11 EDUCATIONAL CREDITS 3 Livestock Credits are required each year! Must be earned by August 1. Returning members must have earned one credit by working their assigned area at last year s county fair New members will need to earn three educational credits this year. Note that some Alternative Educational Programs are worth more than one credit! See Gold Handout for current details & check Clover Line 4-H Newsletter for any possible added credits.

12 WHEN ATTENDING ANY LIVESTOCK CREDIT MEETINGS and WEIGH INS... Please observe biosecurity precautions to prevent spread of Livestock diseases. Before coming to any Livestock meetings: Shower thoroughly, wash hair and wear only clean clothes, shoes, jackets, etc. that have NOT been worn around any swine.

MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO SHADOW AN AG PROFESSIONAL FOR ½ DAY OR FULL DAY. ½ DAY = EARN ONE CREDIT FULL DAY = EARN TWO CREDITS PERSON SHADOWED CANNOT BE A RELATIVE! CONTACT UWEX OFFICE FOR FORM.

15 IF YOU ATTEND A LIVESTOCK PROJECT MEETING HELD IN ANOTHER COUNTY CONTACT THE STAFF IN THE SHAWANO COUNTY UWEX OFFICE TO OBTAIN A SHAWANO COUNTY LIVESTOCK PROJECT MEETING ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION FORM. BRING THIS FORM TO THE MEETING & HAVE IT SIGNED BY SOMEONE IN CHARGE OF THE MEETING OR PROGRAM. TURN THIS FORM IN TO THE UWEX OFFICE BY AUGUST 1.

16 WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED AT INITIAL WEIGH-IN All animals you want to be weighed in must be ear tagged prior to arrival Be prepared to turn in your completed contract and Cool Form (sheep and market goat only) Make sure your trailer is well bedded as any filthy animals will need to be handled by you (this goes for final weigh-in, too)

17 TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR ANIMAL PREPARED TO DO WELL AT THE FAIR Good nutrition Lots of exercise Practice leading/showing your animal Ask for help when you have questions!

18 NOW THAT YOUR ANIMAL IS READY STEPS TO FOLLOW TO ENTER THE FAIR SHOW (& AUCTION) DUE AUGUST 1: 1. ALL junior fair entries must be submitted online. Must be entered in: A)Market, B) Showmanship & C) Carcass. If not, will not be allowed in sale. The following need to be submitted to the UW- Extension: 2. Livestock Financial Project Record 3. Photograph of you and each animal

19 1. JUNIOR FAIR ENTRY Submit your fair entry online by creating an account through the Shawano County Fair website. A new account needs to be created each year. Watch the Clover Line for more complete instructions. If you cannot enter online, your leader or FFA advisor can provide a paper form for you. It is your responsibility to get it from them. Final responsibility to get fair entries turned in on time is YOURS ALONE!!! It s NOT your 4-H Leader s or Ag Teacher s job!

20 NEW (AND OLD ) FAMILIES TAKE NOTE: Everyone must ENTER AND SHOW their animal in: Class A: Market Class B: Showmanship Class C: Carcass To be eligible to sell in the auction. When proofing your entry, look for your A, B, C s The fair auction is NOT the Market Class!

21 EXHIBIT LIMITS EXHIBITORS MAY SHOW UP TO 3 animals IN MARKET ANIMAL CLASSES. EXAMPLES: Two market hogs + one market lamb Two market steers + one market hog. One market beef, one market hog + one market lamb Allowed to sell only 1 animal (total) in the market animal sale. If 2 market animals of same species are entered, must be in different weight classes to be exhibited.

22 KEEP IN MIND... A SWINE CANNOT BE USED IN THE SHOWMANSHIP CLASS ONLY

23 BEEF MEMBERS When entering the market class (Class A) be sure to choose the correct lot. If parents are not of the same breed your animal may be any combination of: the true Beef breeds (ex. Angus X Hereford) Crossbreds (1 parent dairy and 1 parent beef or non-identifiable dairy breeds) Or Dairy-beef (any combination of the six original dairy breeds) Crossbred class winner will compete with the beef steer in the champion drive.

24 2. LIVESTOCK FINANCIAL PROJECT RECORD 4-H members will receive this from their club leader with their record book and project pages. FFA members can pick them up tonight or download a fillable pdf found on the Shawano County 4-H website. Complete your record sheet up to AUGUST 1 of the current year.

25 LIVESTOCK FINANCIAL PROJECT RECORD (Continued) 4-H MEMBERS: Keep your original copy of your Livestock Financial Project Record, complete it after the fair and place in your 4-H record book. FFA MEMBERS: Check with your FFA advisor to see if he or she wants copies of the Livestock Financial Project Record turned in after fair.

26 3. PHOTOS Photos must be a high quality, commercially-printed, 4x6 color landscape photo of exhibitor and your sale animal If you are unsure of which animal you are going to sell at the auction, multiple photos can be submitted. The name of exhibitor and the animal ear tag number must be printed legibly on the back of each photo.

27 PHOTO REQUIREMENTS A high quality photo is one where: there is a single animal in the photo, the image is not blurry or too dark/bright, the animal is clean, the exhibitor is dressed in professional show attire, and the background is aesthetically pleasing. Photos not in compliance with the above specifications will be rejected and a suitable photo must be resubmitted by the exhibitor by August 15.

29 PRESENTLY The 2017 Shawano County Fair Livestock Shows are NOT terminal. If NOT selling your animal in auction, you MUST notify your species chair, in writing, within 15 minutes after conclusion of the last market show class for your species. The Livestock Committee can invoke a terminal show at any time, per decision of Wisconsin State Veterinarian.

30 ALSO KEEP IN MIND Each exhibitor or buyer assumes all liabilities in cases of sickness, death or injury to his or her animal, immediate self, family members or guests before, during or after the fair. Exhibitor wristbands must be worn at all times on the fairgrounds during the county fair.

32 FINAL WEIGH-IN FOR ALL SPECIES AT COUNTY FAIR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30 11:00 AM TO 6:00 PM BE SURE TO BRING: HEALTH PAPERS (for swine, signed by vet and exhibitor) YOUR COPY OF LIVESTOCK PROJECT CONTRACT IN CASE QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR ANIMAL ARISE (GOOD IDEA TO BRING THIS ALONG).

33 RATE OF GAIN BECAUSE THERE IS AN INITIAL WEIGH-IN, A RATE OF GAIN CONTEST FOR BEEF, SWINE & SHEEP CAN BE HELD. THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME PER DECISIONS OF STATE VETERINARIAN. LIVESTOCK KEY COMMITTEE AND AG SOCIETY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER DECISIONS OF STATE VETERINARIAN.

34 RATE OF GAIN REQUIREMENTS Between initial and final weigh-in your animal must gain the minimums outlined below in order to be able to participate in the sale: SWINE: must gain at least 170 pounds Sheep: All lambs must gain at minimum 0.2 pounds per day Beef: animals must achieve a two pound rate of gain per day

35 FINAL WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS Weight Requirements to sell in Shawano County fair livestock auction: Hogs to 300 lbs Lambs: 110 lbs minimum weight Dairy Steers: 1,100 lbs minimum weight Beef (Steers or Heifers): 1,000 lbs min wt. Crossbreds: 1000 lbs minimum weight

36 OVERWEIGHT SWINE Hogs weighing over 300 lbs at final weighin will be sold and processed at 300 lbs. You will be paid for up to 300 lbs. only.

37 LIGHTWEIGHT ANIMALS Must be shown in a lightweight class at fair Allows members to complete their projects. Penalties for failure to show lightweight animals will be assessed.

38 ONCE YOUR ANIMAL IS SETTLED IN

39 CLEANING BARNS AND PENS Pens must be cleaned, animals fed and watered by 10 am every day of fair!!! This means after the auction, too! If you choose NOT to keep your pens cleaned and animals properly cared for, the Livestock Key Committee reserves the right to assess fees and bar you from auction the following year!

40 CLEANING PENS PROPERLY Check pens throughout the day. Do NOT place clean sawdust on top of old, wet bedding!!! REMOVE wet bedding and replace with new sawdust. If you don t, your pen will smell, attract flies and you will hear from us! Hogs: Clean manure from feed pails!

41 HELPING OUT AT FAIR Check message board hanging in swine & beef barns to see where and when you re needed! Check your County Fair Blue HandBook to see when your 4-H Club or FFA chapter has a job. Follow through and help out This is where you will earn one credit toward NEXT year s project.

42 ARE YOU READY FOR SHOW DAY? Show supplies needed Cane and/or show sticks Brushes, Grooming Tools Water Container and water pail Feed pails and feed Brooms, shovels Wheel barrow Happy face in the barn!

43 MORE ON SHOWING Know where your animal is at all times! Pay attention to what age or weight group is in show ring. Listen to show judge and be prepared to answer questions.

46 REMEMBER 1. NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULES! (So READ your handouts, fair book and Blue Fair Handbook carefully!) 2. DECISIONS OF SHOW JUDGES ARE FINAL

47 DISORDERLY CONDUCT AT THE FAIR Disorderly conduct includes yelling, shouting or excessive arguing with the show judge, superintendents or helpers, other exhibitors or UW - Extension staff. Disorderly conduct has and will be reported to sheriff department deputies, at discretion of show superintendents, helpers or UWEX staff. Persons have been ejected from fairgounds and face possible fines, multi year suspensions, etc.

48 ATTENTION ADULTS: Parents and adult friends of 4-H/FFA exhibitors will be asked to keep alcoholic drinks out of ALL youth barns and exhibit buildings. This means no sitting on the show box or lawn chairs and drinking beer in youth barns. This will be enforced by fair superintendents and Sheriff Deputies.

50 MARKET ANIMAL SALE Friday, September 1, starting at 6:30 pm Remember: Exhibitors are required to enter their species in their A) Market, B) Showmanship & C) Carcass Contest to be eligible to sell in auction. Showmanship is very important!!!! If you CAN T be there, you will need to submit a letter to key committee with reason why for permission. But you MUST either show or sell in person.

51 CONTACTING BUYERS Send or give letters to buyers about 2 weeks prior to fair Be sure to provide info about : Buyer s Lunch prior to auction Auction Starting Time Which building to come to (Coliseum) Come early, directions from horse barn? In-person contact is usually best

53 PERSONAL APPROACH IS BEST BUT DO NOT MAKE THREATS OF ANY KIND TO POSSIBLE BUYERS!! Such as: We won t do business here any more if you don t buy my child s pig. In fact, harassing buyers before, during or after the sale is prohibited and may result in the loss of you or your child s ability to sell in this year (or future year s) sale

54 AUCTION DO S! DO THANK buyers and bidders personally at the auction and after the fair with thank you notes! Remember, this year s bidder MAY be next year s buyer.

55 DURING THE FAIR AUCTION Know when your animal is due in the sale ring!!! Auction volunteers are NOT responsible for finding you! Parents/Guardians: Make sure someone responsible is helping your children if you can t be there.

56 BUYER THANK YOU NOTES (& Champion Award Sponsors, too) Write these and place in drop box located in swine barn by Monday morning of fair. Must be in stamped, selfaddressed envelope but DO NOT SEAL!!!

57 TIPS ON BUYER THANK YOU S Take time to write a nice note! Can include a little about you and what you plan to do with the money More than just Thank you for buying my animal at the Shawano County Fair. Thank You signs should be made and hung up over your pens right after auction!

58 REMEMBER THOSE PHOTOS? As soon as you leave the ring you will be given your framed certificate with your photo displayed for you to hand PERSONALLY to your buyer Many of these certificates do get displayed in their businesses

59 LIVESTOCK AUCTION SALE COMMISSIONS AND FEES 2% to Shawano Area Ag Society 2% to Livestock Key Committee for sale expenses. $10 per head for ultrasound fees. Livestock Insurance Fund fees in case an animal gets sick or dies in transit. Sheep = $1.00/head Hog = $2.00/head Beef = $5.00/head Beef and Pork check off fees are deducted as required by USDA. No check-off on sheep.

60 GETTING ANIMALS TO PACKING PLANTS Load out is Monday, last day of fair starting at 4:45 pm ALL exhibitors must clean their pens! Breeding stock may be loaded after packing plant trucks are finished. Exhibitors must handle own breeding stock

61 During Fair: POSITIVE ATTITUDE AT ALL TIMES! Appearance of animal and you must be acceptable at all times! Answer questions from fair spectators in a friendly and polite manner. Should you be asked questions you don t know the answer to, refer them to a member of the key committee

62 UNDERAGE DRINKING OR OTHER ILLEGAL ACTIVITY AT FAIR OR OTHER 4-H EVENTS WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF EXHIBITOR FROM FAIR ACTIVITIES (SHOWS, AUCTION, ETC.) WILL BE REPORTED TO SHERIFF DEPT. ADULTS FOUND SUPPLYING ALCOHOL TO MINORS WILL BE REPORTED ALSO.

63 IF CAUGHT UNDERAGE DRINKING OR DOING OTHER ILLEGAL ACTIVITY ON LAST NIGHT OF FAIR.. YOU WILL BE BARRED FROM PARTICIPATING IN NEXT YEAR S FAIR. YOU WILL BE REPORTED TO SHERIFF DEPT. THIS RULE IS BY ORDER OF THE COUNTY AG & EXTENSION COMMITTEE.

64 SICK ANIMALS Fair Vet donates his/her time and walks the barns once per day. He/she is NOT on the grounds all day long. If Fair Vet is not available, call your own vet if necessary. Notify fair superintendent of ANY medication given to animals!

65 RANDOM ANIMAL DRUG TESTING Any animal at the fair can be randomly tested for Legal and illegal drug residues, steroids, etc. at any time.

66 USE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP, COMMON SENSE & GOOD JUDGEMENT DURING FAIR Fair superintendents, 4-H Leaders, FFA Advisors, UWEX Agents, etc. cannot be at fair 24 hours per day. If you need assistance immediately, go to fair office and ask them to page someone who can help you.

67 IMPORTANT: IF ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS SHOW UP AT FAIR Do NOT try to argue with them or confront them in barns! All leaders, superintendents and parents should refer them to the fair office! Ag Society president, Dale Hodkiewicz is the official spokesperson
