2 Animal Care Module 1 Find out about animal care Identifying different types of establishments where animals are kept and cared for (for example, boarding kennels, pig farm), finding out about the main purpose of these establishments (for example, to care for dogs whilst their owners are away, to raise pigs for meat), the different activities carried out in an animal care situation (for example, exercising, mucking out) and the different job roles that people do (for example, kennel maid, pig man) 1. Identify three different types of establishments where animals are kept and cared for 2. Identify the main purpose of each of these establishments 3. Identify three different activities carried out in an animal care situation 4. Identify three different job roles in animal care Visit different establishments involved in animal care, for example, a veterinary surgery, horse riding stable/livery yard, animal welfare centre, animal rescue centre, high street pet store to find out about their activities and different job roles Invite someone who works in an animal care situation to talk about their work with animals Use the internet to find out about animal care and job roles in animal care Animal Care Module 2 is about: must show that you can: Select and find out about a job role in animal care Selecting and finding out about a job role in animal care (for example, RSPCA officer, veterinary nurse), the key tasks, training/qualifications, personal skills, clothing and usual working pattern 1. Select a job role in animal care to find out about 2. Identify three key tasks of this job role 3. Identify appropriate training and/or qualifications for this job role 4. Identify personal skills useful for this job role 5. Identify appropriate clothing for this job role and the reason/s for wearing it 6. Identify the usual working pattern for this job role Visit an animal care establishment and interview staff about their job roles Attend a talk given by someone who is familiar with job roles in animal care Use the internet and careers information to find out about job roles in animal care

3 Animal Care Module 3 Assist with handling and moving animals Identifying reasons for handling animals (for example, to move animals, to check animal health), identifying those animals which you can safely handle (for example, pony, rabbit), assisting with handling an animal (for example, a hamster, a dog) and moving animal/s (for example, move a horse to enable a stable to be mucked out, move a cat into a carrying basket ready to transport to the vet) 1. Identify at least three reasons why an animal needs to be handled 2. Identify at least one animal which you work with that can be safely handled 3. On two different days, handle an animal in a way that minimises the risks to yourself and others 4. On two different days handle an animal in a way which minimises the risk of stress and injury to the animal 5. On two different days assist with moving an animal/s in a way that minimises the risks to yourself, others and the animal/s Move a small animal such as a gerbil to a different cage so that its usual cage can be cleaned Assist with moving animals such as sheep, horses, cattle to fresh pasture Groom and exercise a dog at a boarding kennels

4 Animal Care Module 4 Prepare animal feed Identifying appropriate animal feedstuffs (for example, pony nuts, hay), following instructions to prepare the type and quantity of feed required, disposing of unusable feed appropriately, cleaning and storing equipment and supplying clean water appropriately 1. Identify at least two appropriate feedstuffs for an animal with which you are familiar 2. Identify the equipment required to prepare and serve the animal feed 3. On two different days, follow instructions to prepare the correct amount of feed 4. On two different days, dispose of stale and unusable feed 5. On two different days, clean and store the equipment used to prepare and serve the feed 6. On two different days, supply clean water appropriately Use a measure to mix calf meal with water Fill a portable hay net with haylage Clean and fill a water bottle for a rabbit

5 Animal Care Module 5 Clean animal accommodation Preparing the equipment and materials required (for example, wheelbarrow, straw bale), preparing the animal accommodation for cleaning (for example, by moving the animal to alternative accommodation), cleaning the animal accommodation (for example, by sweeping out, by hosing down), disposing of waste correctly (for example, using a wheelbarrow to move waste to the muck heap, sweeping waste into a slurry pit), replenishing with fresh (for example, spread straw in a calf pen) and cleaning and storing equipment after use (for example, rewind hose, wash and put away dustpan and brush) On two different days: 1. Prepare the equipment and materials required 2. Prepare the animal accommodation ready for cleaning 3. Clean the animal accommodation 4. Dispose of waste correctly 5. Replenish with fresh material 6. Clean and store equipment Clean a rabbit hutch Clean out and hose down housing for pigs Clean a hamster cage
