1 Paw Prints Newsletter MARCH 2013 Spirit Saves the Life of Her Owner by Tapping 911 Phone By Dorothy Davidson Two eyes are watching me. One is blue and the other is brown but they both belong to my dog, Spirit. She is never far from my side, waiting for something she can do for me and this was never more important than at 2:00 the other morning when I found myself flat on a cold, tile bathroom floor tangled up in a walker and a wheelchair, too sick and too weak to get up. That is when I asked Spirit to go tap help. She went to her 911 phone, activated it and two big, handsome EMS men came and took me to the hospital. Spirit has been picking things up for me since she was a pup like bringing me my grandson s dirty socks. So when I wanted to get her certified, I turned to my friend, Shelly Ferger, and Dogs for Life in Vero Beach, FL to complete her training, especially the necessary public training that I was physically unable to do myself. They trained Spirit for the 911 phone. I could tell many stories about this dog like how many times she has retrieved my bird feeder or my portable phone that fell off my porch then down the bank into the woods, to how she won the hearts of all the staff and patients at Care Partners in Asheville, NC, the rehab center where we spent two weeks after coming out of the hospital. There are no words to tell you how grateful I am to have Spirit and the many people who have been so good to us along the way. Dorothy Davidson with Spirit Trained and Certified to tap a 911 Emergency phone by DFL, as Featured on ABC, Ashville, TN. Update on Jim Taylor, SSG US Army Ret. & Service Dog Pia Pia By Dawn Taylor, Jim s Spouse Pia Pia attended many outings in 2012 with friends, neighbors and families, which included dinner at the Olive Garden and breakfast at Cracker Barrel. We ve been to Texas for 10 days, visited the Spaghetti Factory, Steak & Shake and the Burleson Mall where she performed perfectly. She attended Jim s son s wedding reception and stayed right by Jim s side. When we stayed in hotels, she took to the elevators really well and comforted Jim while he was in the elevator by licking his face and holding onto him. There was a time when Jim was unable to go into an elevator and Pia Pia walked up five flights of stairs with him. Pia Pia goes with us for normal shopping at Target, Air Force Bases, Wal-Mart and Sam s Club. She goes to Jim s Chiropractor and Counseling appointments and she was right on Jim s lap when he had to give blood at his doctor s appointment. She also attended a DFL fundraising event at the Vero Beach Country Club. When Jim needed to get the windows tinted on his car, Pia Pia was with him. The employees were impressed with her behavior and her attendance to Jim. She also attended the DFL Howl-O-Ween event in October at the DFL Off- Leash Dog Park. Last year, Pia Pia attended a blessing for caregivers at the West Palm Beach Veteran s Hospital Chapel. December was a tough month for Jim. Pia Pia stayed right by his side at all times, in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. When Jim became sick downstairs, Pia Pia came upstairs to get me from my office. She spun in circles until I got up to follow her, then she led me to Jim who was on the floor in the kitchen, too weak to get up by himself. Many times during our trips, Pia Pia helped Jim to stay calm so that he can be patient enough to hear people (continued on page 6)

I used to want to hide from view I d wish I was somebody else With you my looks never mattered Pretty soon I forgot them myself Legacy of a Service Dog There were many moments of laughter And many joys we shared It broke my heart to let you go When the vet said you should be spared. You gave me the courage to travel You brought me out of my shell Together we saw distant cities Together we conquered them all. You were there in my darkest moments You helped me to weather the pain You helped me forgive the cruelty And learn how to love, not blame. No medals are given to service dogs For taking away the fear, For giving us a brand new lease on life, A life of dignity and cheer. I now have friends, a purpose in life And confidence in myself That s the Legacy you leave behind, old friend, As a tribute to yourself. ~ Anonymous

Nominated by DFL and Awarded The Association of Fundraising Professionals Indian River County Chapter Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist - National Philanthropy Day November 13, 2012 Donadio and Associates founded in 1990 by Anthony (Tony) J. Donadio, for the past 20 years has been heavily involved in, and committed to, the Indian River community by supporting several nonprofit and civic organizations. I feel fortunate to have had a successful business in Indian River County. Donating my professional services gives me an opportunity to give back to our community through the creation of infrastructure for non-profit organizations, as well as helping to create funding tools for Capital Campaigns. The mission of DFL has recently been expanded to include a new focus.to train dogs to assist military veterans afflicted with different types of post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). DFL is calling this program Service Dogs for Soldiers. There are one million veterans returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It is estimated more than 20% will have PTSD. In Indian River County, we have no less then 4,000 veterans currently receiving disability benefits for service related conditions and this is the population we are seeking to provide help. Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan veterans have to deal with PTSD on top of other injuries including TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries), hearing loss and amputation. As veterans age, it is often the case that their disabilities worsen and they could greatly benefit from the help of a service dog. In 2010, DFL s Board decided to move forward with plans to build a 1600 square foot, air conditioned Assistance Dog Training Center on their 4.5-acre dog park. This much needed facility will enable DFL to quadruple the number of dogs it can train and provide a central location for the certified trainers to meet for further education and observation of training techniques. Additionally, DFL is planning to use the Training Center as headquarters for veterans who have already gone through the program to train their dog and now wish to come to a location where they can assist other veterans in getting started with the training of their own dog. Tony Donadio of Donadio and Associates volunteered his time to design the building, to select an engineering company and a construction company, and then stay with the project to supervise the construction contractor until completion. With this unbelievable offer of support, the DFL Board had the confidence to move forward with the project. It also felt Tony s deep concern for veterans (his father and other family members were WW II veterans) made him a perfect fit because he understood the (continued on page 6) Shelly Ferger, DFL Founder, President & CEO with Anthony Donadio, AFP Indian River Corporate Philanthropist of the Year, with Kerry A. 4 Paw Prints Page 4 Assistance Dog Training Center Capital Campaign Update A $100,000 Challenge Pledge from an anonymous donor has breathed new life into the DFL Capital Campaign for the construction of an Assistance Dog Training Center! The challenge is to raise an additional $200,000 toward the estimated $300,000 cost of the Training Center. DFL is confident this can be accomplished with the support of our current and future donors. Additionally, a second gift of $50,000 will support the operation of the Dog Park through 2013 and it will allow DFL to focus on the campaign and its important programs such as training Service Dogs for Soldiers! The Capital Campaign Fund has an approximate balance of $113,000 and about $ 50,000 in monetary and over $50,000 in in-kind services have been completed, which includes permitting, engineering, fundraising materials and operational costs. Upon the successful completion of the challenge, DFL will have over $400,000, which will allow us to break ground on the Training Center! The Training Center campus is the last step in solidifying our Service Dogs for Soldiers Program. Did you know that DFL is one of only three accredited organizations statewide that a soldier can utilize so that he/she may be accompanied on a military base by his/her service dog and be reimbursed the expenses for the service dog by the Department of Veterans Affairs? Other non-accredited organizations are already training service dogs for veterans because they have facilities. Imagine what DFL could do once the Training Center is complete! For example, recently DFL visited a training facility in Ponta Vedra Beach where up to four teams can be trained simultaneously. However, the soldiers at that facility will not be reimbursed by the DVA because that organization is not accredited by Assistance Dogs International like DFL is. In addition to training service dogs for soldiers, DFL plans to train the actual soldiers so that they can find a purpose again and pay it forward to another soldier. As often discussed in the media these days, there is a national focus on improving one of the most critical resources in meeting the needs of people returning from Iraq and Afghanistan: other veterans. DFL is partnering with local veteran groups, medical facilities and families to locate veterans in need and to educate them on what is available to them in their local community. However, these veterans need a place to go to work and learn and that place, we hope, will be our Training Center. We have all heard the phrase Build it and They will Come. If you would like more information about our Capital Campaign or simply want to help please do not hesitate to contact Shelly Ferger at DFL Dog Park Gets A New Leash On Life They say the third time is a charm!! Let s hope that is true for our beloved dog park. Many of you date back to 1997 when the park was a 4-H Dog Masters Community Service Project. We worked very hard but were unable to convince Indian River County or the City of Vero Beach to establish a suitable parcel for a dog park. The park only became a reality because an anonymous donor, aka Buster & Molly, helped purchase the property at 12th Street & 16th Avenue, then helped to create the dog park by paying half the development costs for the Dog Park Club of Indian River to lease 2.5 acres of the property, thus creating Vero Beach s very first off-leash dog park. Then, in May of 2008 when the lease expired, we came very close to losing our dog park again, because DFL (who had subsequently adopted the park in 2003) was not able to raise the necessary funds to purchase the 4.5 acre property. Then a second anonymous angel aka: Rudy & Jay, came to our rescue with a $200,000 donation which inspired DFL donors and dog park members to raise additional funds to purchase the property and expand the dog park into the whole 4.5 acres you see today. (continued on page 6) DFL Sincere Apprecation Anonymous Dog Park Donors Thank you Reliable Septic for the donation of the port-o-let. Thank you Coast to Coast Landscaping for the donation of tree trimming.

5 Paw Prints Canines For Comfort Page 5 aka Pet Assisted Therapy Program What is Pet Assisted Therapy? Therapy for Pets is the first thing that comes to most people s minds but, to the pet it is the offering of unconditional love and comfort to people. People are receiving therapy from a four footed trained dog and his/her volunteer owner. The second part of DFL s important tax-deductible charity status that is often overlooked is a very important program to the community and us. It is important to the volunteers who work behind the scenes to train and certify their dogs, and it is most important to hundreds of people in area nursing homes, rehabilitation centers & other non-profit organizations who benefit from this program. Not only does this program receive the least amount of coverage, it also receives literally no funding. Under DFL s guidance, training and certification, there is no charge to the 30 facilities we have served since 2002, nor to the hundreds of individuals who receive the benefits of pet therapy. Support for this program is received through DFL s general operating account and paid through your donations to our annual appeal. Recently the DFL Board of Directors decided to rename this Program Canines for Comfort, and has just held it s annual re-certification of 12 volunteers. Two new volunteers certified during February and March and four other volunteers are currently in training at the off-leash dog park dog obedience classes, pending certification. Certification Guidelines 1. Each volunteer is to complete a DFL Canines For Comfort Application. 2. Each volunteer is to complete and agree to the DFL CFC Protocol and Rules of Etiquette. 3. Each volunteer and his/her dog (if no previous obedience training) will attend an orientation to basic obedience/behavior class. 4. Each volunteer and his/her dog are required to pass the AKC CGC test. (Exception small dogs with low activity level) 5. Each volunteer and his/her dog are required to pass a DFL Public Access test. 6. Each volunteer will attend a DFL CFC Orientation Class that will cover the following: The Therapy Handlers Responsibility i. Human/Animal Interactions - The dog and handler s role in the therapy program; ii. How to handle and get out of problem situations; iii. How to recognize stress in dogs and volunteers; iv. How to prepare for your therapy visit. 7. If training for Health Care Facilities, each volunteer and his/her dog may need to attend an orientation with the medical facility coordinator. 8. Each volunteer and his/her dog will accompany a Certified CFC team on at least one visit prior to scheduling. 9. Volunteers agree to only represent themselves as a Certified PAT/CAF Team with facilities in agreement with DFL. 10. Each DFL CFC volunteer/dog team must re-certify each year. Rules of Etiquette Representatives understand that Pet Assisted Therapy / Canines For Comfort Animals do not have the same legal access rights as Service Animals. Pet Therapy dogs may have public access only if a DFL Representative makes prior arrangements with management of a facility or business to take therapy dogs to the facility. When attending a pre-arranged facility, representatives will sign-in and out. They will also agree to complete a Program Report after each visit and forward to DFL on a monthly basis. You must treat people with kindness and respect confidentiality at all times. You must be prepared to clean up after your dog at all times. Do not take your dog to programs if you or the dog are not feeling well.your dog must be clean at all times during therapy visits. Your dog must be up to date on all innoculations. You must handle your dog humanely at all times and protect them from unknown or unstable environments. Dogs will not be handled roughly or corrected while in public places. Dogs must be on a sit stay or a down stay command prior to anyone petting the dog. You will wear your DFL Volunteer shirt and your dog will wear its DFL scarf or vest at all times when representing DFL programs.

This Year s Club started their training in September 2012 and have worked hard to teach their dogs how to sit, stay, come, lay down, heel and navigate the dog park agility equipment. They also meet once a month to prepare their project books and demonstrations for their April 16th County Wide Event at Dodgertown Elementary (time TBA), where awards will be presented to the top placing presenters. 8 Paw Prints Page 8 Jim Taylor & Pia Pia (continued from page 1) talking to him. She will speak for him, so that he may excuse himself from a stressful situation and she alerts him when someone is at the door in a hotel, just like she does at home. She is able to pick up on his moods and distracts him with her playful antics. Jim & Pia Pia attended a fund-raising luncheon with DFL to tell his experience of having his dog trained as a service dog through Dogs For Life, Inc. Jim explained that without his dog he would have become a recluse. Pia Pia has given him a quality of life he would not have had without a service dog, and we are grateful for Jim s service to this country and the independence he gave to us all. A New Leash On Life (continued from page 4) So, there we were in December 2012, trying to hold onto the dog park by building a non-profit Assistance Dog Training Center on the property and, once again, not able to make ends meet. Here s where the Third Time Is A Charm comes in. A third anonymous donor aka Amber & Daisy, has blessed DFL and the dog park by donating funds to cover shortfalls at the park during 2013, thus allowing DFL to re-start the capital campaign to build an Assistance Dog Training Center on the dog park property. This Center will also benefit the dog park members in many ways, including additional revenues and providing restrooms. A New Dog Park Committee has been formed, co-chaired by DFL Board Member Eleanor Bengyak, members Beth Stryker and Toni Teresi. This group is giving a new leash on life to the dog park by organizing members to help with future fundraising, marketing and membership recruitment. If you haven t already, you will be hearing from the Committee to see how you can help to secure the DFL Off-Leash Dog Park Forever! Donadio (continued from page 3) importance of DFL s mission to help veterans with PTSD. As a small nonprofit, DFL found a project of this magnitude extremely daunting although the Board felt comfortable with the need for the building, its uses and its ability to increase training capacity. We knew it was the correct thing to do we just didn t know how to get it done! The tipping point that pushed DFL to proceed was when Donadio and Associates said, We have done this before with many nonprofits and, yes, we will be there until completion. In June 2012, DFL completed the design, engineering and building permit process. By that point Donadio and Associates had provided $22, of in kind donations. If you chose just one word to describe Tony, it would be humble. He does not like to talk about himself. He only says, I just like to get to know people and help them where I can. He especially enjoys the impact he can make for smaller organizations where his donation of time, business knowledge and leadership can make the difference in reaching a goal. Tony s love for animals can be traced to his history of rescuing and adopting dogs. In 1977, he adopted his first dog, a Doberman, a breed he still favors. Today these four names are very special to Tony Bear, Elsa, Addie and Rocky all rescued with love and caring. A person who is prepared to personally and professionally support so many local charities, all while running a successful business, is someone who we feel blessed to know and work with. Tony s company proved to be the deserving recipient of the 2012 AFP Corporate Philanthropy Award. Have your name listed on the Tree of Life by donating to the Assistance Dog Training Center, or in honor or in memory of a loved one.
