1 AFGHAN HOUND OF NEW SOUTH WALES 80 TH SPECIALTY SHOW Results and Critique of Judge Wendy Caine It was a great privilege to be asked to judge the 80th Specialty Show of the Afghan Hound Club of NSW and, although I managed to bring the English weather with me, everything ran smoothly. I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work, including the super lunch, and a big thank you to Bronwynne Goyen for all her help and patience in giving over her house to Drew and myself during our visit. My overall impression was of an incredibly high standard of Hound, both in presentation and of soundness, and I congratulate you on your achievement of such a high standard. Perhaps the only worry I had was of several hounds had really dirty teeth and there were several light eyes, particularly in the darker colours. I would also like to thank the exhibitors for your sporting acceptance of my decisions, which, in the end, had to come down to personal choice. DOGS Baby Puppy 1st: BAYAN REBEL ROUSER. Gold dog. Stood alone in this class but well deserved his win. Has all the essentials, good depth of chest, well muscled for such a youngster, handled sympathetically to get the best out of this baby. Full of monkey whiskers, which added to the attraction.(baby Puppy In Show) Minor Puppy 1st: FURBARI INKA WARRIOR. Gold dog (Minor Puppy In Show) 2nd: FURBARI INKA TREASURE. Gold dog Not a lot separating these two litter brothers. Good front assembly, well sprung rib cage, firm loin, nicely angled at the rear giving a pleasing overall balance. Movement of both was good with plenty of drive. 1st just had the maturity and more masculine head. Understand that they are sons of my BIS, hope they have just as bright a future Puppy 1st: ABOUKIR HIGH FIDELITY. Black/silver. Difficult class with such varying types. The winner decided that he would not co-operate today, but overall he was of good balance and type. Good front, well sprung rib and well angled rear. Head could be more defined and needs to tighten in top line but this could have just been through naughtiness. Won the class on his movement. (Puppy In Show) 2nd: QUOM EL PERRO ES MIO. Blue brindle. 6mth old who was the real baby of this class. Nicely constructed, liked his head and eye shape, good chest for a baby, just at the all legs and wings stage. Junior 1st: KANGAI DISTANT SON. Black masked gold. Stunning youngster. Strode into the ring as if it was his, a real eyeful. Lovely chiselled head, triangular dark eye, correct width of skull, excellent shoulder and upper arm, good depth to chest, firm loin into good fall away, textbook tail set and ring, excellent quarters, all came together in effortless movement. This young dog is one to watch for the future, I wish him well. (Opposite Junior In Show) 2nd: CALAHORRA TICOL MYFANCY. Black masked cream. Very good conformation all round, soundly put together, head just not my cup of tea. Moved well. Intermediate 1st: KHANDHU EXCELSIOR. Blue brindle. The most beautiful dog, so well constructed, excelled in his head, front assembly, so well balanced, good rear angles, well set tail, everything I was looking for. Moved steady and true. (Opposite Intermediate In Show)

2 2nd: KHANDHU VA BENE. Cream. All male cream dog, fabulous head, well chiselled, good reach of neck flowed into correct shoulder placement, good forearm, lovely depth of chest, nicely angled at the rear which he used to his advantage. 3rd: AVIVA HEART T HEART. Blue. Liked everything about this dog, nice head, sound construction, correct movement, just not carrying his tail correctly today. Australian Bred 1st: CH KHANDHU ANDRETTI. Oyster brindle. As this class entered the ring I held my breath. One after another of the most beautiful Afghans I have ever seen, and all moving like the wind, fabulous! 1st won this class on the overall picture he presented plus his free flowing, non stop movement, I felt that he could go on all day and still have breath at the end. Well defined head, long flowing neck into the best of shoulders/upper arm. Super sprung ribcage tucking up into a firm, short loin. Best of sweeping quarters, tail perfection, a lean, firm body which was a joy to go over. This dog was really enjoying himself and an air of look at me which could not be denied. He floated around the ring and could not be denied his first place. Still only young in Afghan terms, what a great future he must surly have. (Best Australian Bred) 2nd: KJAVU MADISON AVENUE. Black. Super sound dog, exciting on the move. Shorter in back than my winner but a beautiful picture. Needless to say construction was correct which gave him such freedom on the move. Pushed 1st hard all the way. 3rd: KHANDHU ARCTIC FOX. Cream. Splitting hairs between all these dogs. This all male cream had the most beautiful head, perhaps the best chiselling of the whole day. Excellent angles front and rear, excellent tail set, has everything going for him. Could just do with a little more animation on the move to complete the picture. Open 1st: GR CH SATANG NEVER SAY NEVER. Masked gold. Wow what a class, it just gets better. As this dog entered the ring my thoughts were, here is my perfect dog, everything I look for in one picture. Beautiful lean head, dark triangular eye with a keen look, head held high and a proud arching neck. The best lay of shoulders, excellent angle to upper arm, straight forelegs, firm pads, strong sloping pasterns which gave him the effortless lift on the move. Super spring of ribs, correct length of loin, good pin bones sweeping to the best hind angulation today. The whole picture was finished off by a correctly ringed tail. Standing he presented a picture perfect outline, on the move he just got better, front extension accompanied by powerful drive from the rear, truly breathtaking. For me this dog personifies the breed. Congratulations to his breeder/exhibitor on this wonderful dog. (BIS and Dog CC) 2nd: KJAVU PRINCE OF BELAIR. All black. And what a black. Loved this young dog. Standing and on the move was all Afghan. Stacked he had it all, on the move he was heart stopping. My hands just flowed over his beautify construction, it was a pleasure to feel, nothing jarred, just perfection. Came second to a dog who was more mature and on the top of his form. This boy will have his day, many of them, and in the not too distant future, just needs maturity. Thank you for bringing him. (Runner Up BIS and Reserve Dog CC) 3rd: CH KHANDHU EGO. Blue brindle. Has everything going for him. In fabulous coat and condition, strong male, nice head, good neck, level topline. Just had to give way to two dogs in top form.

3 BITCHES Baby Puppy: No entries Minor Puppy 1 st : KARAKUSH COOTAMUNDRA WATTLE. Gold. Very nice baby, feminine head, good shape eye, good shoulders, straight forelegs. Has all the qualities to become a lovely girl when she gets older.(opposite Minor Puppy In Show) 2 nd : QUOM LA MAYA. Blue brindle. Full of the joys of a young Afghan, naughty but nice. Liked her balance, good dark eye. A handful on the move. Puppy 1 st : ABOUKIR KISS ME KATE. Black/cream/tan. Easy winner of this class. Lovely head, nice balance and outline, good deep chest, level topline, good angles which she put to good use on the move effortlessly.(opposite Puppy In Show) 2 nd : ABOUKIR INSOMNIA. Black/cream/tan. Litter sister to first and many of the same comments apply, but doesn t have the scope of movement of her sister. Junior 1 st : KANGAI SUNSET IN VENICE. Gold. Litter sister to my Junior Dog winner and a feminine version of him. Excellent conformation, lovely head, excelled in her overall soundness, a houndy young lady without any coarseness. Everything in the right place, a bright future ensured.(best Junior In Show) 2 nd : CALAHORRA Q BEHIND ME. All black. Good front and chest, head did not appeal but an honest type. Let down a little on the stack but made up for it on the move. Intermediate 1 st : KHANDHU CHIAMA NAOMI. Blue/black brindle. My absolute find of the day. What an exciting young lady. One I would dearly love to own. Loved her style, her balance, her soundness. Excellent conformation in every department, with a head to die for. Drove round the ring from her excellent quarters and good extension, poetry in motion. Had to go under cover for the challenge due to the rain and this unsettled her, but time is on her side.(best Intermediate In Show) 2 nd : KHANDHU RENDEZVOUS. Black/silver. See that this is the littler sister to winner. Similar in many ways, a very honest bitch with good angles fore and aft. Not quite the balance of her sister but moved well to secure this place. 3 rd : KHANDHU SPECIALTY MAID. Chocolate brindle. What a sweetie. Beautiful head, excellent shoulders, good topline, correct fall away. Could have made more of herself on the move. Amazed to see that these three bitches are litter sisters, what wonderful dogs this breeder is producing. Australian Bred 1 st : KJAVU SUGAR BABE. All black. Not the glamour girl of the show but what a mover. Handled very well by her young handler. Very feminine, lovely head carried with pride, strode around the ring as if she owned it.(best Opposite Australian Bred) 2 nd : CH FURBARI STAR DIAMOND. 3 rd : CH AVIVA BROKNHEARTD MELODY Australian bred class 2nd and 3rd.: unfortunately 'rain stopped play' and we had to dive undercover. In all the confusion my notes for these two places were lost. I apologise. Open 1 st : GR CH FURBARI TIFFANY DIAMOND. Black. A beautifully presented bitch in all her glory. Handled and presented well. A stunning bitch, fabulous head, excellent shoulders and upper arm, good depth of chest, firm loin, the best of backends, good tail set and fall away. She powered

4 around the ring using everything she had got to advantage. For me a touch too much coat as this concealed her fabulous construction. Could not be denied this class. (Best Opposite Sex and Bitch CC) 2 nd : CH KHANDHU CAPRI. Black masked gold. Lovely bitch, head her fortune. Different type to winner but appealed greatly. Gorgeous eye shape, mandarin beard, good conformation, sound in all aspects, just beaten on the day by a bitch who pulled out all the stops. (Res Bitch CC) 3 rd : CH KARAKUSH ANASTASIA. Tiger brindle. Liked this bitch an awful lot. One of the best heads of the day, lovely neck to shoulder sweep. Excellent bitch who on another day could take the top prize, loved everything about her. A credit to her handler. Wish I had more firsts to give out. Sire s Progeny: 1 st : CH TAEJON PARALLAX VIEW. Dam s Progeny 1 st : CH KHANDHU MADAME BUTTERFLY. Words from the 80 th Specialty Show Manager -Jean Berger On awaking on the morning of our specialty and finding it wasn t actually raining, I thought that the fates might be kind and we might make it through the show without getting wet. Alas it was not to be, but until the rain became a deluge we remained out in the open. Thank goodness we had the covered area where our grateful judge took refuge. One of the innovations which proved to be a success was the photographers area, where each place getter could be photographed whilst being critiqued.(and wasn t Wendy Caine s tiny dictaphone a beauty!). The photo stand allowed winners and their dogs to achieve a professional result. I hope this idea is retained for future shows. Our lunch under the covered area also proved to be a winner and engendered a welcoming friendly atmosphere which seemed to permeate the whole show. Most people brought along something to share, which meant there was plenty to go around. I think interstaters enjoyed the ease of having lunch provided. I hope members enjoyed the agility display as much as our dogs Snow and Capri and Sue Cilia s Chad enjoyed showing off their skills and antics. I personally liked the small break between classes- though my feelings may not be universal, I felt it gave competitors with a few dogs the chance to take dogs to and fro without rushing and brushing hastily their next exhibit. Our Show Secretary Pauline Hewitt and her hard working show committee can be extremely proud of their achievements running our 80 th specialty show. Rebel is a joy to own and I am sure we will enjoy many pleasurable years together. Congratulations also to the committee and helpers of the Afghan Hound Club of NSW 80 th Specialty Show. This proved to be an enjoyable day. The show was well organized with helpful and friendly staff, and the competitors and spectators were pleasant and supportive. I could not have asked for a more enjoyable experience for Rebel s and my debut show into the afghan world. The Best Baby Puppy of Show Award was simply the icing on the cake.
