6 The power of repellency What makes repellency so important? If a flea, tick or mosquito is repelled or killed, it cannot bite or attach and transmit the organisms that may cause disease. Your clients need to know that not all products repel and kill. Vector-borne diseases are mostly transmitted once a parasite bites or attaches to the host. Even if the parasite dies later on, transmission may have already occurred, and the disease may still be spread to the host dog. That s why repelling or killing parasites is so crucial in a pet owner s approach to caring for their dog s overall health. What does K9 Advantix II repel? K9 Advantix II REPELS and kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes too. Why recommend K9 Advantix II? K9 Advantix II offers broad-spectrum protection against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes by incorporating imidacloprid, permethrin and pyriproxyfen to create a repel-and-kill mode of action. K9 Advantix II offers a preventive approach to pest protection. The longer an infected tick remains attached to a dog, the greater the risk of transmitting a disease agent. 4 Rosenthal M. (2008). 7 How diseases can be transmitted The questing tick finds a dog, selects a feeding site and prepares to penetrate the skin with its mouthparts DAYS 2 is how long an adult tick can feed on a dog, if left undisturbed. The saliva of most ticks has substances that can prevent their hosts from recognizing they have attached. 3 Tick saliva facilitates feeding by acting as a local anesthetic, an anticoagulant and a medium for the transfer of disease agents. 3 4 Learn more The tick, if uninterrupted, may feed for several days on the dog s blood, sharing whatever bacteria and parasites it may be carrying. The fully fed (replete) female tick will now detach and drop into the environment, ready to lay thousands of eggs and potentially leaving behind, in the dog, agents that may result in diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The female tick may also pass parasites or infectious agents to her offspring through transovarial transmission. 5

10 The power of repellency (continued) K9 Advantix II and pathogen transmission interruption: The following studies support imidacloprid + permethrin, two of the active ingredients in K9 Advantix II. By effectively repelling and killing I. scapularis (deer tick), K9 Advantix II may help reduce the risk of Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) transmission*,2 Two separate studies differing only by tick challenge study days (day 7 vs. day 25) Each study contained one group of 8 dogs treated on day 0 with imidacloprid and permethrin, and one control group of 8 dogs All dogs were infested with I. scapularis (deer tick) on study day 7 or study day 25. Ticks remained in place for 7 days in the first study and 5 days in the second study 0 ml of whole blood drawn on study days 4, 25, 42, 56, 70, and 9 in the day 7 challenge protocol, and study days 42, 56, 70, 90, and 0 in the day 25 challenge protocol Lyme disease may be transmitted as fast as 24 hours after attachment. 4 Studies performed in non-canine hosts. Transmission time may also vary with the physiologic state of individual ticks. 12 Speed of kill Your clients have a need for speed It doesn t take long for an infected parasite to transmit the pathogens behind such diseases as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and more. K9 Advantix II kills fleas and ticks quickly* -5 Imidacloprid stops biting fleas within 3 5 minutes.* 3-5 Fleas bites can cause health problems such as: Flea allergy dermatitis Anemia (with severe flea infestations) Fleas are killed within 2 hours of initial application Reinfesting fleas are killed within 2 hours * Three in vivo experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of Advantage Topical Solution (imidacloprid) on fleas (Ctenocephalies felis). A total of seven (7) dogs were treated with Advantage Topical Solution. Seven (7) days after application, areas on the dogs were shaved to allow visual observation. A petri dish was attached over each spot, and then infested with up to 00 fleas. In all replicates, the fleas stopped their feeding activity and started tetanic trembling movements within 3 5 minutes. In one hour, all fleas were dead. 14 The value of a broad spectrum What external parasites should your preventive product target? Dog owners want to make sure they re doing everything they can to help their dog have protection against parasites, which is no small task considering the many parasites that a dog can encounter throughout the day. K9 Advantix II REPELS and kills fleas, ticks and mosquitos too, kills ALL life stages of fleas, repels biting flies and kills lice. F LEAS FLEA EGGS F LEA LARVAE TICKS MOSQUITOES BITING FLIES How does K9 Advantix II provide broad-spectrum protection? The combination of imidacloprid and permethrin increases neuronal activity in vitro. Imidacloprid and permethrin attack different receptors on the parasite s nerve, causing an initial excitatory effect and hyperactivity, and then death Pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator (IGR), affects the early flea life stages to prevent development to the next stage LICE K9 Advantix II offers your clients broad-spectrum protection against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes too. Imidacloprid: (nicotinic receptors) irreversibly opens nicotinic receptors on postsynaptic neurons, resulting in constant neuromuscular stimulation, spastic paralysis and death Permethrin: (sodium channels) causes prolonged sodium ion exchange across neuronal membranes, resulting in constant nerve discharge followed by spastic paralysis and death 2

15 Activity on Fleas K9 Advantix II effectively breaks the flea life cycle 5% of a flea infestation is visible as adults. The other 95% of an infestation live as immature stages inside the pet s surroundings. 2 In just 30 days, 0 FLEAS can become an infestation of up to 250,000 on your dog and in your home. 4 Adult fleas hatch from the cocoon and continue to infest the pet. 4 FLEA PUPAE 0% of an infestation 2 Flea larvae spin a cocoon and develop into pupae (approximately 2 weeks). 3 ADULT FLEAS 5% of an infestation 2 FLEA LARVAE FLEA CYCLE 3 35% of an infestation 2 Adult fleas lay eggs after a blood meal, which then drop off into the environment. FLEA EGGS 50% of an infestation 2 Flea larvae hatch out of flea eggs when conditions are right (warm and humid). With an IGR as part of your flea control program, the flea life cycle is disrupted at multiple stages, which helps your clients treat and prevent flea infestations. Fleas and flea bites Fleas can aggravate a dog and affect the way he or she bonds with his or her owner. More importantly, fleas may transmit tapeworms or cause skin problems, such as flea allergy dermatitis. 2 Integral parts of integrated flea control include an adulticide to provide the necessary adult flea kill on the dog and an insect growth regulator to suppress the reproduction of surviving adults. M.W. Dryden, DVM, PhD Imidacloprid, an active ingredient in K9 Advantix II, is effective against adult fleas and larval flea stages. In addition to its adulticide flea efficacy, imidacloprid demonstrates a larvicidal flea efficacy when the larvae in the dog s surroundings come into contact with the K9 Advantix IItreated dog. Another benefit of imidacloprid is that fleas do not need to bite the treated animal to be exposed to the active ingredient. K9 Advantix II contains pyriproxyfen, an IGR that contains ovicidal and larvicidal properties to target flea infestations. Methfessel C, Turberg A. (2003). 18 The value of a broad spectrum (continued) Activity on Mosquitoes K9 Advantix II repels and kills mosquitoes for up to four weeks. In addition to year-round protection with a heartworm preventive, the American Heartworm Society recommends the following steps to help reduce pet exposure to mosquitoes : Use approved mosquito repellants/environmental yard controls Keep pets in at night Contact an appropriate agency for mosquito control K9 Advantix II is not labeled for the prevention of heartworm disease and should not eliminate the need for a heartworm preventive product. Mosquitoes can transmit heartworms Once an infected mosquito bites a dog, heartworm larvae may migrate to the bloodstream and eventually invade the lungs and heart. Mosquito bites can lead to stress and skin infection from scratching Mosquitoes are the vector of heartworms They can be a year-round concern in many parts of the country A single dog can be infected with as many as 250 heartworms. It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito 2 Study Support Mosquitoes Kill efficacy against mosquitoes 3 Three dogs in Group were treated with a combination of imidacloprid and permethrin on study day 0; three dogs in Group 2 received a placebo On test days, dogs were placed in mosquito-rearing, screened cages with 50 female mosquitoes After hour, dogs were removed from the cage and mosquitoes were counted and analyzed This study demonstrated that the combination of imidacloprid and permethrin killed up to 98.3% of mosquitoes and was up to 95.2% effective in reduction of blood feeding 3 Kill efficacy against mosquitoes Learn more 88% of dog owners would want their flea and tick product to also protect against mosquitoes.* * Pet owners were recruited from a nationally representative sample of U.S. households. 88% of the 780 participants, who were dog owners who purchased any flea/tick product in the past 2 months, responded that they agreed with the statement that they would want their flea and tick product to protect their dog against mosquito bites. 4 6 Days post-treatment
