1 IN THIS ISSUE FROM THE CHAIRMAN First may I wish everyone best wishes for a happy and successful time during If the economy continues to improve there may be some recovery in the show sector and sustained success in all the other canine activities we are engaged in. New for 2014 is this online Journal. The cessation of the Kennel Gazette is a response to these modern times and the trend away from printed material towards electronic media. This move is similar to the actions of the dog press as they seek to increase their web presence and takes us out of the petition for advertising. Around two per cent of the members wrote to the office expressing regret or negative ment about the change to a journal and about a third wish to receive the Journal in hard copy. Perhaps over time, greater experience of the on-line accessibility of the Journal and the relative ease with which past editions can be referenced, will encourage others to take the Journal electronically and reduce costs further. The Journal is intended to provide the information that dog people require and if there are suggestions how this might be expanded or improved then Caroline Kisko will be pleased to receive your thoughts. A New Kennel Work has started on the buildings surrounding the Kennel as British Land prepare for the start of the demolition of the vacant offices to the north of our premises in Clarges Street and Bolton Street. Plans for the internal layout and design of the new Kennel premises are advancing well and the project is on time and within the agreed budget. The anticipated timing for pletion of our new acmodation is projected to be late summer/early autumn 2015, a date that is increasingly feeling in the near future. Of course there is a considerable amount of building work to be pleted between now and then and no doubt a few challenges to be faced on the journey. We can expect some noise and disruption to our normal peaceful home in Mayfair and there will certainly be a temporary but different appearance to our surroundings but we will try and ensure life at Clarges Street remains as normal as possible. 2 2 EVENTS CHAIRMAN S VIEW FROM THE CHAIRMAN Promoting the Dog In November, Discover Dogs proved a tremendous success with increased numbers of the public visiting the event and what at first hand appeared to be a very good ambiance. We are very fortunate that each breed has dedicated volunteers willing to put in some sterling work to help the public find the right dog for their lifestyle. The Kennel is often challenged to do more to promote the pedigree dog but this overlooks the valuable contribution of events such as Discover Dogs and Crufts. Both generate considerable public interest and in the case of Crufts the relationship we have built with Channel Four ensures television Discover Dogs proved a tremendous success with increased numbers of the public visiting the event and what at first hand appeared to be a very good ambiance. coverage leading up to the show which adds to the educational impact for the public. Every week the staff are actively engaged with the media, other charity groups and politicians putting across the positive points of dog ownership and defending the reputation of the pedigree dog. As I write this I see a strong message in the daily paper about the dangers of buying from puppy farms and those selling imported pups without adequate assurances. This did not happen by accident and the Kennel has played a role in getting this warning message into the press in time for the Christmas period. Of course the message that gets out is not always what we would wish and often jars with the enthusiasts view but that does not mean the effort is wasted. UKAS Accreditation of the ABS The Assured Breeder Scheme was strongly featured in the newspaper item on puppy farming and work is well advanced on an important revision of the Assured Breeder Scheme (ABS). Early in the new year we plan to introduce a revised membership fee structure as we enter a transitional phase of rising fees so that we can introduce routine assessor visits for everybody who is breeding a litter as an Assured Breeder. Regular visits are an important requirement under UKAS accreditation for the scheme and have also been the most significant improvement most often asked for by those with critical views of the scheme. The planned three year cycle of visits to every assured breeder requires a team of trained assessors and this cannot be achieved without an increase in fees. The ABS is recognised by many outside bodies as a significant contribution towards ensuring good health and welfare standards and therefore it is possible to offset fee increases by a package of benefits for those who maintain or take up an ABS membership. The details will be announced in due course but this new phase for the ABS represents important progress. Establishing a rolling cycle of assessor visits for all, should help us continue to set the standard for anybody wishing to breed dogs. Members of the KC Assured Breeder Scheme are certified by the Kennel, as a UKAS accredited body, and actively demonstrate their mitment to the health and welfare of the puppies they breed. Even more significantly our revised ABS system is capable of fulfilling the standard for dog breeding required by Local Authorities and it is high time that anybody breeding dogs in the UK achieves the same standard of welfare, health and hygiene that is expected from those who breed Kennel registered pedigree dogs.

The items required to plete the Annual Returns are listed in the Kennel Year Book 2013/2014, under Regulation C 4.a. Secretaries of Breed s, Breed Councils, General Canine Societies, Training s and Agricultural/Municipal Societies should note that all items must be forwarded each year, even if there are no changes from the previous year. Any proposed changes to rules must be clearly indicated. In the case of a Breed which uses its Breed Council's judges lists, this fact should be clearly notified in a covering letter. For Breed s and Councils, criteria for inclusion on judges lists must also be submitted. Any proposed amendments to the criteria must be highlighted and approval sought. Breed health declaration. As part of their Annual Returns, Breed s are required to submit a health declaration. Breed s are also required to submit the Kennel Code of Ethics with any additional clauses as part of the Annual Returns. The safe receipt of plete Annual Returns will be acknowledged and failure to receive a receipt within 6 weeks should be queried with the Canine Activities Department. 16 16 JUDGES JUDGES Judges Development Programme Breed Credit Results Eligibility to attend a Judges Development Programme, Breed Seminar and Breed Assessment. A person must have: Previously awarded CCs to at least three breeds within the relevant Group (i.e. the same group as the host Group), or previously awarded CCs to at least two breeds within the relevant Group and one CC in another Group, or been previously approved by the Kennel to Judge a Group at Championship Show level. The following lists include those judges who meet the above minimum entrance criteria and have received a Breed Credit Certificate. Whilst there are some additional judges who may have attended a Judges Development Programme Seminar, been assessed and achieved a Breed Credit, they do not yet meet the above minimum entrance criteria and have therefore not been included on the lists. When these people reach the minimum entrance criteria, their names will be added to the lists. It should be noted that the following judges are, by virtue of their Breed Credit, exempt from Kennel Regulation F(1)b.(1) (b) which require judges to be included on a Breed Council/ B Judges list or above in order to judge more that three breed classes (5 classes for Stud Book Band E breeds) for the breed in question. This applies to Open Shows and to breeds without CCs at a Championship Show.
