2 RESCUE GROUP PROFILE: Senior Dog Haven & Hospice PO Box 1441 Wilmington, Delaware The mission of Senior Dog Haven & Hospice is to rescue and re-home senior dogs and to offer hospice care to senior dogs in need. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that incorporated in June All funds raised go directly to the care and treatment of our rescue dogs. Senior Dog Haven and Hospice is located in Delaware. We are a small, dedicated group of fosters and volunteers who have a special place in their hearts for senior dogs. We strive to improve the lives of senior dogs who find themselves without a family to care for them anymore. We do not have a facility our dogs live in our homes as members of our families until they find their forever home or in the event of a hospice situation, until they cross the Rainbow Bridge. We provide care, comfort, companionship and, most of all, unconditional love. Our adoption program: All applicants for a Senior Dog Haven & Hospice dog are thoroughly screened, all references checked and a home visit is performed. Our hospice program: It is a sad fact that our animal community is plagued by many of the same terminal illnesses that we are. Shelters, unfortunately, often do not have the resources to care for dogs with an untreatable disease. They are deemed unadoptable and euthanized, surrounded by strangers and often before the disease has even started to affect their quality of life. The objective of our hospice fosters is to provide a loving home where these seniors can live the remainder of their lives in peace and comfort. When the day comes that the disease finally overcomes them, they will cross the bridge surrounded by their foster family and knowing that they are truly loved. 3 It s Summer! Read these two short articles by Matt Miller Wet Nose Pet Care Matt@wetnosepetcare.com Flea-Fi-Fo-Fum! For such a miniscule creature, fleas can cause great misery. The relentless itching and subsequent discomfort and sores are bad enough, but some dogs suffer allergic reactions or anemia from an infestation. Telling a beginning flea attack from normal grooming in a dog can be tricky, so the best policy is to check every few weeks as a matter of course. Look for fleas behind your dog s ears, around the head and neck, and in his armpits. Alternatively, run a flea comb through his coat, drop some hair on a white paper towel, and add water. Red or rust -colored stains on the towel indicate fleas. Prevention is key. This is all the more important because once fleas become established in your home, they re difficult to eradicate. A variety of medical and holistic flea prevention treatments exist. Ask your veterinarian what is right for your dog. For more info: Disaster Preparedness Plan for evacuation. Many health & safety regulations preclude bringing pets (except service animals) into disaster shelters, and many Katrina victims perished because they refused to leave their pets behind so plan ahead! Microchip and tag your dog. Compile a list of places that might board animals in an emergency. E.g: Pet friendly hotels and motels, boarding facilities, horse stables, or veterinarians. (Animal shelters should be a last resort as they are often overwhelmed with animals in a crisis.) Make a Disaster Kit. Wherever you go, you ll need supplies. Gather the essentials in an easy-to-carry duffle bag. Bring: Medications and medical records. Leashes, harnesses, and/or a carrier. Current photos, in case your dog gets lost. Food, water, bowls, and can opener. Notes about feeding schedules, medical conditions, and behavior problems in case your dog has to be boarded. 6 What can I say about Boogie s life? He was a good and affectionate cat. He liked to cuddle and complain. He had an opinion about every person or pet. He owned me. He is gone. When I think about Boogie, I know this much everyone who met him loved him. Everyone had nicknames for him. At his biggest he was 25 pounds and at the end not even 10. His personality matched his size. He picked his friends carefully. He liked Ruby the little senior gray terrier I rescued, but ignored Molly my first beloved beagle. Not interested in Bodie, Or Annie who played with his tail and would get swatted. He had a good life and he was loved. Boogie s adoption was a reason at least for me to continue to adopt seniors. And to encourage others to do the same. He will always be Boogie to me. And he will always be with me. He had a good life. He was loved. And now he will be missed. Every day. Their days or years are shorter but they are So happy to be with you! Go Fetch! By Bodie Here I am with mom the day I went home from Sean Casey Animal Rescue. It was my adoption day almost two years ago! I had no idea what was in store for me, but now that almost two years have passed I have been on a great adventure. I am about to go to Florida for the second time to see Grandma. I became a pet therapy dog and we visit a great place in Brooklyn now. I have hosted several Beagles Meetups at the local dog park. I became good friends with Scooter the cat and even let him in my bed. While I may not have a girlfriend or really any close dog buddies, it does not matter to me. I am in the best possible place, and I have also started my own greeting card line! I continue to use my blog to help other beagles who wait for homes, and I try to send adopters to my favorite rescue groups whenever I can. I think this is the life I was supposed to be living. It s summer and I expect to be a major couch potato! Have a good summer all! Bodie! 6
