Hamsters should have a clean, nice, good-sized cage with some toys to play with. You should feed your hamster once every day. Give them hamster mix and some fruit and vegetables and throw away any old food. They should have fresh water every day in a water bottle. You will need to clean your hamster s cage out once a week. Use pet-safe disinfectant and put fresh wood shavings and rodent bedding in the cage. All of these items are available to buy at Peekaboo Pets. You will need to check your hamster every day to make sure it is healthy. Use the picture below to help you. 8 Mornington Council Guidance for Pet Shop Owners 1. All animals must be housed in suitable accommodation made of suitable construction materials and must not be kept in a way where they can be interfered with by other animals or the public or be able to escape. 2. The size and material used must be suitable for the species being housed and be kept in good repair. 3. All accommodation should allow animals to move naturally, e.g. climb, fly, swim or jump. 4. Signs should be in place to deter public interference and accommodation locked if necessary. 5. The type of bedding used will depend on the animal kept, but it should be provided in sufficient quantities to enable the animal to feel secure and warm. 6. Ventilation helps with disease control and prevents humidity. The spread of airborne infection can be of significant risk; excessive or inadequate humidity may also cause other health problems. 7. Accommodation must be cleaned as often as necessary to maintain good hygiene standards. 8. Where accommodation is on a tiered system, water, food or other waste must not be allowed to enter the lower housing from above. Breeding and Sale of Dogs Act 1999 (s8) a. No dogs will be sold aged under 8 weeks. b. The licensee will be guilty of an offence if he sells a dog which does not have a microchip. 8 S52346A
9 Health status 1. There must be a daily inspection of each animal to check for any signs of pain, suffering, injury or disease. 2. Any sick or injured animal must receive appropriate care and treatment without delay. Veterinary advice should be sought whenever necessary. 3. No animal receiving veterinary treatment must be exposed for sale until treatments have finished and the animal has regained full health. 4. A record of any veterinary visits and treatments regarding any animal in the care of the pet shop must be kept. This must include dosage and frequency of any treatment prescribed and must be produced to an authorised officer on request. These records must be kept for a minimum of six months after the treatment. 5. In the case that an animal is deemed unfit for sale, it must be housed away from the shop floor, or its accommodation must be clearly marked with a sign stating NOT FOR SALE. S52346A 9
