2 JACOB SCHICK HOLLYWOOD After a triple-stacked tank mine detonated below his vehicle in Al Anbar Province, Iraq in 2004, Jake suffered compound fractures in his left leg and left arm; multiple skin, ligament and bone losses; varying burns; partial loss of his left hand and arm; amputation below the knee of his right leg, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Jake has undergone 46 operations, 23 blood transfusions, and countless hours of rehabilitation. A passionate and fearless leader whose quick wit and stories of intestinal fortitude have a profound impact on everyone he meets, Jake has appeared on James Gandolfini s HBO special Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq, as well as 60 Minute Sports, and various other local and national venues. 3 STEPHEN JACKEL, U.S. ARMY SGT. PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT U.S. Army Sargent Stephen Jackel joined the military in During his time in the service, Jackel was deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan where he received countless awards, including a Purple Heart. In addition, Jackel s unit was presented with a Valorous Unit Award. While on convoy in Afghanistan on August 23, 2011, Jackel was injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded underneath his RG31 vehicle. The force of the blast knocked Jackel unconscious. Jackel woke to the screams of his team members that the vehicle was on fire they were trapped inside. While attempting to escape and save the lives of several soldiers, Jackel used his injured leg to put out the flames around him before finding an exit through the hatch at the top of the vehicle. With the hatch open, he quickly assisted others out of the burning vehicle. Jackel sustained severe injuries from the blast, leading to bilateral below the knee amputations and a traumatic brain injury.

4 MATT PEARCE, FORT WORTH POLICE MEDAL OF HONOR In an exchange of gunfire with a wanted felon evading arrest in Ft. Worth, Texas on March 15, 2016, Ft. Worth Police officer Matt Pearce suffered seven gunshot wounds including a shattered femur, collapsed lung, nicked heart, punctured diaphragm, damaged liver and spleen, and a broken jaw. Although he was rushed to the operating room, he was given just a 4% chance of surviving his multiple injuries. Pearce would go on to spend over two weeks in a medically-induced coma, finally awaking on the day of his daughter s third birthday. After a month in the intensive care unit, and another full month recuperating in the hospital, he was finally released to begin physical therapy from home. In addition to his story of survival and struggle through recovery, Pearce s experience can also be credited for the reinstatement of the Ft. Worth Police Department s Tactical Medical Unit a program that had been shut down in The field medical training of his former partner, Brandi Kamper, played a vital role in his survival, demonstrating the need for restoration of the department. After enduring months of grueling physical rehabilitation, Officer Pearce, a former firefighter-medic from the state of Washington, returned to duty with the Ft. Worth Police Department s newly revived Tactical Medical Unit. In early 2017, Pearce received the department s highest top award, the Medal of Honor.

5 BRENDAN McDONOUGH, LONE SURVIVOR FROM THE GRANITE HILL FIRE Brendan McDonough was on the verge of becoming a hopeless, inveterate heroin addict when he, for the sake of his young daughter, decided to turn his life around. He enlisted in the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a team of elite hotshot firefighters based in Prescott, Arizona. Their superintendent, Eric Marsh, was in a desperate crunch after four hotshots left the crew, and perhaps seeing a glimmer of promise in the skinny would-be recruit, he took a chance on the unlikely McDonough, and the chance paid off. Despite the crew s skepticism, and thanks in large part to Marsh s firm but loving encouragement, McDonough unlocked a latent drive and dedication, going on to successfully battle a number of blazes, saving homes and eventually win the confidence of the men he came to call his brothers. On June 30, 2013, while McDonough Donut as he d been dubbed by his brothers, served as lookout, they confronted a freak, 3,000-degree inferno in nearby Yarnell, Arizona. The relentless firestorm ultimately trapped his hotshot brothers, tragically killing all 19 of them within minutes. A movie is being released this year about the elite crew of men who battled the wildfire that claimed the lives of 19 of their members. Cast of the movie includes Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Jennifer Connelly, and Miles Teller who plays Brendan in the movie.
