VICARAGE. BACK DOOR. THEY ARE ALL TALKING QUIETLY. Please. No. Please. No. Please please. No.
We only want tuppence. Will you go before the cook sees you? Give us tuppence and we ll sod off. You shouldn t use language like that Jimmy. I know worse words than that. He does yeh. I m sure he does. And don t you go repeating them Sam. Or you ll get a wallop off of my Dad. We could do a job for you. For the money. We could do a job. And you could pay us. Like Mum pays Adam to deliver laundry. We could deliver something for you. I haven t got anything needs delivering. I ve got the grate to blacken, the china to dust, the floors to scrub and the dog to walk. And all before one o clock. So go and play will you. We could walk the dog! Yeh we could walk the dog! I am not letting you two walk the dog. Well how are you how are you going do all that stuff? Like cleaning and that. The china. And the floors and that. If you let us walk the dog then you ve got more time.
Yeh. We ll look after him. Erm. Go on. Please. Go on. Oh. Alright. Alright. But do not let anything bad happen. We won t. We won t. We never would. Don t let him off his lead. Cos I don t want you losing him. If you lost him I would lose my job. Do you understand? Yes. Jimmy? Yes I understand. I don t want the Vicar or his wife to know that I ve let you do this. Alright? (together) Alright. (together) Alright. Can we have the money now?
SCENE 2 EXT. SEAFRONT AND ARE WALKING THE DOG. She s beautiful. Who is? Your sister. No she s not. I wish I was old enough to marry her. Even if you were old enough you wouldn t be good enough. Yeh I would. No you wouldn t. Yeh I would. You wouldn t because you re a Macknade. So? So everyone knows that the Macknades are common. No we re not. I like you. You re my best friend. I don t care that you re common. What s he stopping for? Dunno. Kush. Come on boy. Come on. We re going to the beach. KUSH STARTS WALKING AGAIN. Kush is a funny name. It s Indian.
Why s he got an Indian name? The Vicar s wife grew up in India. Where s India? It s near Wales. Oh. What shall we buy with the money? Aniseed balls. Fry s chocolate. Cough candy twist. Chocolate limes. Lemon drops. Barley sugar. Sherbet pips. You choose one thing. I ll choose one thing. Look at all them dogs. It s a competition. You get like money for a prize. We could win it and buy loads of different sweets. Like we wouldn t have to choose only one thing. We could buy one of everything in every jar in the whole of the shop.
SCENE 3 FX. EXT. IA PIER. SOUND OF CAROUSEL AND OF PLENTY OF YAPPING DOGS. Name? Us or the dog? You. Erm Sam Wilson. Jimmy Macknade. Entrance fee. Entrance fee? Four pence to enter. We ve got tuppence. Tuppence isn t four pence. If we win the prize then we could pay you back after. And I think we most likely will win because - because look at our dog. Well he is a very fine looking animal. He s called Kush. Kush? That s it. Is that a German name? German? Sod off. Jimmy.
Sorry. Sorry. I meant no Sir it s Welsh Sir. It s not Welsh. It s Indian. He s a St Bernard. I see that. He rescues people. He s rescued us tonnes of times. He s really brave. And strong. And good. And noble. Well boys the truth is you re in luck. We ve had 121 entries and only 21 dogs have shown up. I can only assume the war is to blame. So on this one occasion for tuppence only we ll allow you to enter the competition. Thank you Sir! Thank you Sir! Call me Archie. Thanks Archie. Yeh thanks Archie.
FX: If you could line up next to the others I think we re ready to commence. Good luck and may the best dog win. MOVES OFF AND ADDRESSES THE CROWD WITH A LOUD SPEAKER. (MUSIC HOME FRONT STEAM ORGAN CLOSING SIG USED IN BACKGROUND AT 4 23, FADING UP AS TRANSITION TO NEXT SCENE. 21 SECS USED IN TOTAL) Alright everyone. My name s Archie Tulliver and it s my absolute pleasure to say welcome to the annual Folkestone Dog Competition. Held as is tradition on beautiful Victoria pier.
SCENE 4 FX: MISS PC FX: FX: FX: LILIAN EXT. IA PIER. FADE UP CLAPPING. And the second prize goes to the Scottish Terrier known as Mice. Congratulations Miss Penn Caskell. Thank you. Thank you very much. CLAPPING A Scottish Terrier. With a rubbish name. It s not fair. It s not right. And the third prize goes to a very fine St Bernard called Kush. Congratulations Sam Wilson and Jimmy Macknade. CLAPPING Ha! Ha! We won! We won! Congratulations Sam and Jimmy. Allow me to present to you your prize of one shilling. One shilling! We re rich! Thank you. Thanks ever so much. MORE CLAPPING Boys - This is Mrs Frost Hello how do you do.
LILIAN LILIAN LILIAN Mrs Frost is taking photographs for the newspaper and she d like to take a picture of you with your dog. Would that be alright? Yeh! Yeh! I ve never had my picture taken before. Well I m afraid you have to stand awfully still. Do you think you can do that? We can stand like statues. Look. Look. That s very good. That s excellent. Now stay just like that until I say so otherwise the photograph will come out blurry and you ll both end up looking like ghosts.
SCENE 5 EXT. THE LEAS. THE BOYS ARE SITTING ON THE GRASS EATING SWEETS. LIES DOWN AND GROANS What s the matter? I feel sick. LIES DOWN NEXT TO HIM. FX: Me too. I didn t know. You could eat so many sweets. That it made you ill. THE SOUND OF THE MAROONS BEING FIRED. SITS UP. What s that? SITS UP. Sounds like guns. Guns or thunder. Maybe the Germans have invaded. Do you think they have? What would you do? What would you do if you saw a German soldier walking down the street? I d shoot him. But you haven t got a gun. Well I d need to get a gun and then I d shoot him. Where s Kush? What?
Where s Kush? You had the lead. No you had the lead. I didn t! Where is he? THE BOYS START RUNNING, LOOKING FOR THE DOG. WOMAN WOMAN Kitty s going to kill me. And me. Kush! Kush! Excuse me, excuse me have you seen a dog round here? Sorry no. He s a St Bernard. Sorry. What are we going to do? What are we going to do? There he is. Where? With them soldiers. THE BOYS RUN TOWARDS THE SOLDIERS. Oy! Excuse me that s our dog! If this is your dog what s his name? Kush his name s Kush.
Why did you let him run off? We didn t mean to. It was very careless of you. He could have gotten lost forever. It was the guns. What guns? We heard guns. And we thought we d been invaded. Yeh. And we got really like afraid. We was really afraid. Well we haven t been invaded. Rest assured. What was that noise then? It was just the maroons firing a signal. A signal for what? To mobilize the Territorials. Oh. Can we have our dog back please? He really is our dog. I think they seem pretty sincere don t you? Well their anxiety certainly seems genuine. HANDS THE LEAD BACK TO. Take better care next time. Thank you. Yeh thank you.
What regiment you in? Cavalry. King s Third Hussars. You got horses? Well we wouldn t be much good as cavalry men without them. What kind of gun is that? It s a pistol. Is it yours? Yes. Have you ever fired it? Of course. Have you ever killed anyone? Er no. Why not? Erm well I suppose there s never been the need. But if we were invaded would you fire it then? I imagine I would. Can I hold it? I don t think that s a good idea do you? Just for a minute. This is a top break revolver. A what? Here. HANDS HIS GUN.
Thanks Mister. Freddie. Can I have it? No. I want a go. He gave it to me. If you re going to argue you can give it back. How does it work? Well it s called a top break because the frame is hinged at the bottom of the cylinder. TAKES THE GUN BACK AND DEMONSTRATES OPENING THE CYLINDER. See? Is that where the bullets go? That s where the cartridges go. The bullet is inside the cartridge. Oh. The barrel and cylinder are then rotated back and locked into place. LOCKS THE GUN AND HANDS IT BACK TO. Is there bullets in there now? I mean cartridges. Yes. Of course. Point it at the ground please. Do you want to learn how to fire it?
(together) What? (together) Yeh! (together) Yeh! Are you mad? It s alright Victor don t panic (TO THE BOYS) he s such a worry guts Ha! What s your name? Me? Yes you. I m Jimmy. Jimmy Macknade. What about you? I m Sam. Wilson. Okay Jimmy first Why s he first? You ll get your chance hold your horses. Hold on to the dog more like you don t want him to run off again do you. No. Alright Jimmy so we don t kill anyone we ll fire the gun together. Alright. This is a terrible idea. No it s not! And we ll fire it at the ground.
FX: FX: What would the Brigadier say? The Brigadier isn t here. That rhymes. So it does. Alright Jimmy so when we pull the trigger the force of the shot is going to knock you back so try and stand steady. Plant your feet firmly on the ground. Like this? That s perfect. Alright. Ready? Yeh. THE GUN FIRES. THE DOG REACTS TO BEING SHOT. Jesus. You ve shot the dog! Dear God. I didn t mean to! It was an accident. Damn it. You ve shot the dog! IS BACKING AWAY Where you going! STARTS TO RUN. Sam! Sam!
Oh God. Oh God. What the bloody hell do we do now?
SCENE 6 FX: FX: DR MCFEE DR MCFEE DR MCFEE EXT/INT THE DOCTOR S HOUSE HAMMERS ON THE DOOR. Doctor Mcfee! Doctor Mcfee! Emergency! Open the door Dr Mcfee! THE DOOR OPENS What on God s earth- We are sorry to bother you Doctor. Good Lord Freddie. I shot the dog. Well I shot the dog. They both shot the dog. We didn t mean to. It was an accident. It was my fault. It was definitely your fault. Yes alright Victor don t go on. Can you do anything? Come in. Come in. All of you. Let s see what we can do for the poor creature. THEY ALL GO INTO THE HOUSE. DR MCFEE It s his ear. Only his ear. You nearly got him in the eye. But we didn t. Don t make it worse than it is. Let s see. Let s have a look. Sssh. You poor creature. Let s see. Boy.
DR MCFEE Me? Can you pass me my bag? PASSES THE BAG. THE DOCTOR GETS A BANDAGE FROM HIS BAG. DR MCFEE DR MCFEE DR MCFEE DR MCFEE Is he going to die? Die? I doubt that very much. Oh good. I think it s just a nick. What s a nick? A graze. No sign of the bullet. I ll disinfect the wound. Possibly give a stitch. Patch him up with a bandage. He ll be good as new. Thank you Doctor. We are grateful. We really are. You are an absolute idiot Freddie. Alright Victor. When the Brigadier hears about this he s going to hit the roof. How is the Brigadier going to find out? Because he will, he finds out everything. Only four us know what happened. Five of us, including Sam. And the doctor. Isn t this the Reverend Winwood s dog? Yes. You said it was your dog.
Well we meant it was our dog we were looking after. So you re telling me that we ve shot the Vicar s dog? Yes. Oh dear God. LAUGHS It s not funny. (MUSIC - HOME FRONT CLOSING SIG FADES IN UNDER SPEECH AT AND CONTINUES TO CLOSE. 19 SECS IN TOTAL) Well it s certainly not funny for the dog. Oh God. You haven t got a chance in hell of keeping this quiet.
