Although local birds, cattle, sheep, dogs, wildlife and scenes portraying the traditional agricultural industry have formed the core of the collection for over thirty years, 2005 saw the introduction of the Wild World range. Designed by the talented Border Fine Arts sculptors and artists, the Wild World models portray international animal species and extend the choice for collectors who are passionate about nature. Also new is a collection of six butterflies featuring native British species feeding on favourite flowers. From the outset, accuracy and exacting attention to detail have characterised all sculptures. Meticulous research is carried out for every study, experts are approached for advice and approvals sought before production begins. One of the most popular collections is based on the books by James Herriot about a Yorkshire vet. Evoking memories of bygone times, the studies relate humorous tales of animals and dales life. Launched in 1985 the range is extended annually and also includes accessories such as bone china mugs, place mats and coasters. Tractors are very much part of the Scottish Borders heritage and for more than ten years they have formed a well-liked part of the Studio Collection. A licensing agreement with Massey Ferguson to create some of their most famous machines adds interest to the range. The highly diverse Border Fine Arts Studio Collection has developed from an innate love of animals and the environment. Created by highly skilled craftsmen and women, the collections bring aspects of nature into the home and will give pleasure for years to come. 3 The James Herriot Studio Collection Take a new vet, introduce him to the traditional close knit farming community of the Yorkshire Dales and the result is a profusion of amusing incident and anecdote as he begins to understand the foibles of his clients and patients. James Alfred Wight did just this and under the pen name, James Herriot, wrote about his humorous adventures and exploits achieving world wide fame even before the books were adapted for film in 1974 and for television in For the last twenty years Herriot s vivid descriptions have inspired Border Fine Arts sculptors and artists to recreate many of the larger-than-life characters and animals in three-dimensional form. Dogs the yells of the farmer rose above the enraged yappy terriers and one intrepid man leaped into the mêlée and reappeared with a tiny jack Russell hanging on determinedly to the heel of his Wellington Alongside scenes of milking time, collies at work and play are new figurines of the dogs and cats made famous by Herriot, as well as studies of young farm animals seen discovering the world around them for the very first time. Sensitively modelled, each detailed study brings to life the enchantment of the animals escapades. A6508 TOBY Height: 7.5cm 2006 James Herriot. 4 A5915 IN A FLAP Height: 10.0cm The hen and her chicks had found a comfortable place to settle in the farmer s wife s pansy display when along came this collie pup. He was just trying to make friends, but when she noticed that one of her chicks was missing it put her all in a flap. A5914 COME NO CLOSER Height: 9.5cm If animals could talk we know just what this Rough Fell ewe would say to these two collie pups who have wandered into the field. Judging by the body language, however, her message has been read loud and clear! A0601 THE DOG Height: 10.5cm There he sat, the old boy, making every effort to put himself between the bowls on the floor and the new kid on the block. It seemed a bit of jealousy had crept in. A0602 FOUND SAFE It had been a long search that had covered a lot of ground. We knew the collie would find the missing lamb, it was just a question of how long it would take. A1861 PUPPY LOVE Height: 9.5cm Nothing is more fun than watching a young puppy seeking the attention of its mother. Playfulness and affections are very evident. A0454 MUMMY S BOYS Height: 8.5cm It s a grand time of year when the lambs are springing around the fields, and when it s time for a rest, where better than on a nice warm sheepskin rug? A6026 RIGHT OF WAY Length: 28.0cm Country lanes are the natural place for the farmer to move his Blackie ewes from one field to another, whilst the telephone box is the natural place for the neighbour s wife to catch up on the news! But when the two meet sheepishly like this, just exactly who has the right of way? A3704 LAMBS & SHELTER Height: 11.0cm The spring lambs precariously clamber over and play on the shelter whilst other, more sedate lambs, choose to rest and stay in the shade of the cover which normally shelters them from the rain. 4 THE BORDER FINE ARTS STUDIO COLLECTION DESIGNED IN SCOTLAND 5

5 A6514 NUGENT Height: 6.5cm today, a cardboard box occupied one corner, and inside I could see a tiny pig, standing on his legs, his forefeet resting on the rim, he was looking around appreciatively at his new home surroundings MONTY A6739 (Brown & White) A6517 (Black & White) Height: 8.5cm as though recognising his name, the calf raised his head from the bucket and looked at us. It was a comic face wet muzzled, milk slobbered half way up his cheeks and dribbling freely from his mouth MARTHA A6516 (Light Sussex) A6643 (Rhode Island Red) Height: 10.5cm for the hens had grown tired of life under Tristan and decided that they would do better living off the country. They became nomads, ranging ever further afield in their search for sustenance A6248 FRIEND Height: 15.0cm Eager to meet a new friend, the new-born Clydesdale foal finally makes it up onto its feet for the first time albeit in a rather wobbly manner! HERBERT A6515 (White) A6738 (Black & White) Height: 8.5cm the farmer smiled. Oh that s Herbert. Poor little youth s mother won t have im at any price. Took a bite at him at birth, though she thinks the world of her other lamb A6518 MINSTREL Height: 10.0cm A wonderfully heart-warming sight, as Minstrel, the Clydesdale Foal, felt something land on his back and is straining to try and see what it is! 6 THE BORDER FINE ARTS STUDIO COLLECTION DESIGNED IN SCOTLAND 7

6 A4621 NO PEACE Height: 9.0cm Although the older Border collie seeks refuge on the footstool, the Jack Russell Terrier pups hamper any idea of resting she may have. There s just no peace for the wicked! A1860 MIXED BLESSINGS Height: 10.5cm The kitten and the young collie pups were born in the same week, and have been together ever since. Playing together and sleeping together are mixed blessings indeed for the mums! A4244 MAKING A SPLASH Height: 7.5cm This mischievous couple of collie pups are really making a splash today or rather, the Indian Runner Ducks soon will be! A5907 TROUBLE Height: 7.5cm When there s a puppy, there s just no peace, and it looks as though there may be trouble ahead for these three kittens A3327 JOCK S PRIDE LAMP Includes shade Height: 28.5cm Only available in the UK Jock takes life seriously, especially when it comes to looking after his five newly-arrived fluffy pups. A3705 IN CLOVER Height: 11.5cm The newly-flowered clover has proven very succulent to eat, if our middle white pig which has gorged itself is anything to go by! 7 A0163 LADIES IN WAITING We could all only hope that she didn t decide to lay an egg on the milk churn, especially if it didn t have its top on! They did both look very photogenic though. A4243 TWO AGAINST ONE Height: 7.5cm Hello, hello, what have we here! our pup is thinking as he meets these two lambs for the first time after all they are bigger than him and it is two against one! A4072 SPLIT DECISION Height: 13.5cm Up and over the style go the two collies in chase of a rabbit and a pheasant but now they have a dilemma which belongs to which? This calls for a split decision. A4064 UNDER HER WING Height: 9.5cm There s never any thanks but this broody chicken just couldn t resist taking these adorable little kittens under her wing regardless! A3707 EGGS FOR SALE Height: 15.5cm The farmer s wife has set out her stall for passing trade to buy her fresh free-range hen and duck eggs at the farm s road end. In the country there s always trust that the money will be put in the honesty box. A4067 MORNING FEED Height: 13.0cm Length: 31.0cm The eager sheep know that the farmer s arrival signals their long-awaited morning feed albeit under the watchful eye of the Border collie. A3706 FOSTER PARENTS Height: 10.0cm The young ducklings swim around in the old farmhouse sink, whilst being watched over by their tentative foster parents! A5905 CONTENTED Height: 8.5cm Well, it looks as though these two lucky weaners have had a real treat today! The recently filled waterer creates a rush for the farm animals. No orderly queuing here! A2680 SETTLE DOWN The farmyard ducks have found a quiet corner in the garden to rest overnight. One of the young ducklings is restless and has to be encouraged to settle down. HM05 SPILT MILK A1224 PRODIGAL S RETURN Height: 9.5cm Safely returned to his mother s protection, the sheepdog is satisfied that the little lamb will not run off again! A3703 MILKING TIME Height: 16.0cm Before milking parlours, the cows were milked out in the fields and the milker went to the cow, not the other way round. With milk churns full and carrying her milking stool, the farm lass is carefully leading her donkey back to the farm taking care not to spill a drop eagerly followed by the farm cat! 9 The Farmyard Collection The busy, seemingly chaotic, farmyard is the inspiration for this heart-warming collection of young animals and trainee farmers. Brought up together from birth, cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs and young children play amongst the buckets, logs, baskets and crates scattered around the yard and farmhouse kitchen. On The Farm Away from the farmyard, technology and machinery have an important part in the work of every farm. Quad bikes and tractors alike help farmers to manage their stock and maintain their crops naturally all are fully researched by our designers to ensure accuracy down to the last wheel nut! Without a doubt our tractor collection will delight enthusiasts across the generations. A5893 A HELPING HAND Length: 24.0cm Everyone needs a helping hand once in a while. Here our farmer is giving a lamb a little extra, under the watchful eye of its mother and his two collies. 11 Young Farmers A4063 PUPPY TRAINING Height: 16.5cm Who s training who here? This puppy is running rings round our young trainer, although both are enjoying themselves immensely. At this stage, this is successful puppy training! As she sits back on hunkers shielding herself from the spray, her pup is shaking itself. Before long if this carries on there ll be more water on her than in the dog bath! 12 Tractors A3448 LOADING UP (MF35) Height: 15.0cm Length: 37.0cm by Ray Ayres The cereal crop has been harvested and the straw has been baled in the warm September sun. Now the bales have to be collected in from the field and taken for storage in a barn or shed. These bales will provide bedding for the farm stock kept in during the cold winter months. Authorised By AGCO Corporation. The famous Big Red Tractor and the iconic Fergie both by world leading tractor manufacturer, Massey Fergusson, have inspired two wonderful collectable ranges to decorate the home. Massey Ferguson as part of the AGCO Corporation is one of the world s biggest names in farm equipment, with a heritage that confirms its leading role in global agriculture. Massey Ferguson was formed in the 1950s by a merger of North American Company, Massey-Harris with Harry Ferguson Limited of England. This merger ensured worldwide recognition of their revolutionary lightweight tractors. Big Red Tractor A5894 TATTIE SPRAYING Length: 24.0cm Through the growing season our farmer sprays his potato crop two or three times to prevent blight from ruining his spuds. Having come into the field through a narrow gateway with the spray arms in the upright position, the farmer has to dismount his David Brown Tractor to lower them before making a start on the job in hand. 14 Cattle From Ayrshire Cows to Texel Rams, Border Fine Arts excels in creating authentic portraits of named breeds. Experts and breed societies are consulted to ensure the unique characteristics of each animal is accurately captured in each model. Supplied on realistically sculpted bases, the cattle and sheep reflect our farming heritage and promise a dramatic display. This large breed, with distinctive black and white spotted markings, originated in Northern Holland and Friesland where it is has been famed for its dairy qualities since Caesar s time. A4246 CHAROLAIS BULL LYING Height: 10.5cm Length: 27.0cm The distinctive white Charolais, from the region of the same name in France, has been bred in France since 1775 and has had a major impact on British beef production since its introduction to Britain in the 1960s. 16 A5272 LIMOUSIN BULL LYING Height: 10.5cm Length: 26.0cm Known as the carcass breed, this premier breed was introduced to Britain in 1971 and has an unrivalled reputation for fertility, easy calving and versatility. Named after the region in France from which it originates, the breed is hardy and can be found in both upland and lowland areas of Britain. 17 Sheep A wide selection of our most well known breeds of sheep has been represented in this collection, each figurine faithfully capturing every detail of the individual breeds. The accuracy is once again due to the fact that we consult breeders and experts during the creation of each and every one. 18 Horses Border Fine Arts is as passionate about horses as are many of our collectors. A variety of breeds are available ranging from the much-loved Shetland pony to the highly strung Arab thoroughbred. Each horse study has been carefully modelled to ensure a highly accurate portrait reflecting the differing shapes and stances of each breed a direct result of the landscape in which they live. Stallions In contrast, the humour and fun of the gymkhana and the innocent expressions of the ponies and their young riders is deftly captured in the Hay Days Collection. A4058 EXMOOR STALLION Height: 14.5cm A4057 SHETLAND STALLION A3876 THE DRIFT Limited Edition of 750 Height: 17.0cm Length: 44.0cm by Anne Wall Spectacular drifts (or round-ups) of New Forest ponies, which roam in the heather, bogs and poor pasture land of the New Forest in a semi-wild state, can be witnessed every autumn. Once rounded up by the agister and the commoners, the ponies are wormed, checked over and have their tails cut in a special pattern to show that the marking fee (the grazing fee) has been paid. Foals to be sold are then separated off, whilst the remaining ponies are returned to the Forest for yet another year. 38 Wild World The black rhino and baby, gazelles and hippo and baby have been added to the Wild World Collection, first launched in Modelled moving through their natural terrain, the power and amazing agility of each species is sensitively conveyed. Research and patient observation by Border Fine Arts designers and sculptors have resulted in impressive figurines to be enjoyed by all who appreciate the majesty of the natural world. A5408 GAZELLES Height: 17.0cm The epitome of grace and elegance, gazelles are the most prolific of all antelope, occurring throughout the drier areas of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Siberia and China. A2741 HIPPO & BABY Height: 11.5cm Length: 27.0cm Most commonly found in East and Central Africa, the mother hippo is extremely protective of her offspring and keeps her baby close to her for the first two years of its life. A5410 BLACK RHINO & BABY Height: 15.5cm Length: 25.0cm There are five living species of rhinoceros: Black, White, Indian, Javan and Sumatran. The Black Rhino inhabits bush country with thick cover, grasslands, or open forest, where it browses on a wide variety of plants. Unlike most large mammals, habitat loss has not been a significant factor in the decline of rhinos. Rather, poaching for their horn has decimated rhino populations. A3780 CHEETAH Height: 13.5cm The Egyptians tamed and trained the cheetah for hunting swift animals such as gazelles. It has a thin, elongated body and is the fastest runner on earth. It can reach sixty mph but only in short bursts. Great muscular effort is required and it must outrun its prey within a few hundred yards. A5047 LION Height: 15.0cm The king of the beasts, the lion is renowned for his magnificence and power and, like Samson, his mane is the symbol of his legendary strength. 39 A5407 GIRAFFE & BABY Height: 30.0cm This magnificent creature is now found only in the dry African Savannah, south of the Sahara. It is the tallest living animal and can stand four feet higher than a double-decker bus. It is one of the few animals whose young are born with horns. A5409 ELEPHANT & BABY Height: 15.5cm Perhaps it is the endearing way in which it uses its trunk as a hand that makes the elephant one of the best-loved beasts of the Wild World. This charming study of mother and baby successfully captures the sensitivity of this gentle giant. A5048 TIGER Height: 17.5cm Distinctive stripes enable the tiger to almost magically disappear into the dappled light and shade of the forest and savannah grasses. Unlike lions, tigers are solitary and secretive animals, hunting alone often into the half-light of evening. A3065 LEOPARD Height: 16.5cm Length: 33.0cm The leopard is the most widely distributed of all of the wild cats, which is probably why there are so many colour variations too. Generally speaking though, the coat ranges from pale yellow to deep gold or tawny, and is patterned with black rosettes, just like our figurine. 41 Event Figurines The story behind Sharing the Bounty All our figurines start with an idea. In the early stages of development, reference material is sourced via photographs, video footage and, on some occasions, the live animal or bird itself. Another source is through tapping in to material provided by our loyal members of The Border Fine Arts Society. Over the years we have been fortunate to receive numerous ideas from members, mainly from entries to the Inspire a Figurine competitions that are regularly held in the Club magazine, The Borderer. Last year we ran the Inspire a Figurine by Story Competition and from the wealth of material provided, one stood out. Mrs Marion Hollis of Waterlooville wrote in to tell us about Maurice who made regular visits to her garden. Maurice the mouse feasted on seeds and peanuts that Mrs Hollis placed in an upturned coconut shell. Mrs Hollis wrote, throughout the winter we have had loads of garden visitors including blue tits, robins, sparrows, pigeons, doves, blackbirds oh and some very amusing squirrels but to my delight in the evening, Maurice makes an appearance. He remains totally unfazed by the camera and is more than happy for us to walk right up close to him and watch him eat. From this story, Ray Ayres took the idea and developed the concept further. His interpretation captured the classic pose of the blue tit on coconut sharing the bounty with another guest. But with such a cute puppy-dog expression, we can safely assume that he ll get away with it.
