4 Major Breed History Revealed Australian Kelpie (Primary) The ancestors of the Kelpie were black dogs, called either Colleys or Collies and were introduced into Australia in the early 1800s for stock work. They were later bred with other types of dogs (including Dingoes) but always with the intention of them being a working sheepdog requiring little or no supervision. 5 Major Breed History Revealed Dobermann (Distant) The Dobermann was first bred in Germany around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector and dog impounder, as a guard dog to protect him while collecting taxes. His aim was to breed a dog that would be the perfect combination of strength, loyalty, intelligence and ferocity. It is believed that the breed was created from several different breeds that had the characteristics that Dobermann was looking for, including the Pinscher, Beauceron, Rottweiler, Thuringian Shepherd Dog, Black Greyhound, Great Dane, Weimaraner, German Shorthaired Pointer, Manchester Terrier and Old German Shepherd Dog. The exact ratios of mixing and exact breeds used remain uncertain, although experts believe that the Dobermann is a combination of at least four of these breeds. 6 Major Breed History Revealed Australian Cattle Dog (Distant) The Australian Cattle Dog was bred by 19th century Australian settlers to herd cattle on large farms. They required a hardy dog which could handle the harsh climate and rugged working conditions in Australia and the dogs accepted that the Australian Cattle Dog is the result of the crossing of the Blue Merle Collie (from Scotland) with the Dingo, and a late infusion of Dalmatian and Black and Tan Kelpie. First known as the Australian Heeler, blue coloured dogs proved to be the most popular among farm owners and drovers, and they became known as Blue Heelers or Queensland Heelers titles that are still commonly used today.
