3 The Great Dane Club of Las Vegas wants to wish everyone a very safe and wonderful 4 th of July holiday. Happy Fourth of July! While we sit back and watch the beautiful fireworks that light up the skies of our beautiful city, make sure that your fur babies are home and inside safe from the noise and commotion of the holiday. We have all seen the result of dogs left out and being frightened by the loud explosions and pops that go along with our celebration of Independence. 3 P a g e

7 Health Watch Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Dogs By Kelly Roper Dog Breeder and Exhibitor Great advances have been made in the field of dog nutrition over the last twenty years. As pet owners learn to recognize the beneficial effects providing proper nutrition can have on their dog's life-long health, they begin the search for the best foods and supplementations available. Essential fatty acids are the basic building blocks of fats. These types of fats are important for pet health and are considered "essential" because dogs and cats lack the necessary enzymes to synthesize these fats in their bodies, therefore, they must be consumed from dietary sources such as food or supplementation. There are two categories of essential fatty acids called Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Dogs and cats require an Omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) and an Omega-6 fatty acid called linoleic acid (LA). Since cats are carnivores, they require an additional Omega-6 fatty acid called arachidonic acid (AA). 7 P a g e
8 Where do they come from? A concentrated source of the important Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are derived directly from wild, cold-water fish such as Arctic cod, anchovies, mackerel and sardines. Omega-6 fatty acids are derived from plant origin. How do Omega-3s benefit a dog's health? Omega-3 fatty acids benefit your dog's health in many ways. Omega-3 fatty acids are important constituents of cell membranes, providing membrane fluidity and flexibility required for proper cell function. They are important components of nerve cells and are necessary for normal neurotransmission. Other important health applications for your pet include promoting healthy skin, coat, joints, brain and eye development and maintenance, heart and circulatory system. Also, Omega-3 fatty acids provide a source of energy for your pet and help retain moisture in the skin, hence protecting the skin from dehydration. What is the recommended daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids for dogs? Please consult your veterinarian for his/her recommendations on the appropriate dosage for your pet's specific needs. Aren't there already Omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish in most commercialized dog foods? Why give further supplementation? Yes, some of the commercialized and prescription diets have Omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish incorporated in their food. It is important to know the source and quality of the fish oil in foods and how the oil is being handled during the manufacturing and packaging processes. Any of these steps can affect your pet's health if not evaluated and done correctly.omega-3 fatty acids are classified as polyunsaturated fats. These types of oils are susceptible to oxidation, certain temperatures of heat and light. Upon exposure to these elements, these oils turn rancid. Rancid oils taste fishy, cause fishy burps and promote free radicals in the body. Exceptionally fresh oils are highly palatable, absorb well and promote pet health. Purity and freshness levels are critical factors to evaluate in fish oils. You want a fish oil that is exceptionally pure and fresh where there is no detection of heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, furans and oxygen in accordance to the Norwegian Medicinal and European Pharmacopoeia Standards and limits. For more information on these standards and limits, please visit our website. In addition, the type of fish and the ocean the fish is derived from are important. You want wild fish from clean oceans. The fish should be low on the food chain and provide a concentrated source of the important Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, such as wild Arctic Cod, anchovies, mackerel and sardines. Further supplementation may be needed from a quality source if you are not receiving exceptionally pure, fresh fish oil in the pet food or if you re pet may require a certain concentration and/or ratio of EPA and DHA. 8 P a g e
9 Can a dog receive too much of this supplement? It is wise to consult with your veterinarian before beginning any additional supplementation. He/she can compare the amount of EFAs in your pet's current diet and make further recommendations on the appropriate Omega-3 fish oil formula and dosage for your pet. Nordic Naturals offers their supplements in both gel caps and liquid. Is there any advantage to using one over the other? Nordic Naturals provides both liquid and encapsulated Omega-3 fish oils. Liquids are easy to dose and mix with food. Encapsulated fish oils can be easily chewed by larger dogs or punctured and added to food for cats or smaller dogs. They are also very convenient for when you travel with your pet. Learn More 9 P a g e

16 A CAUSE FOR ALL OF US TO GET BEHIND! Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust Trustees: Warren Benoit: Lisa Foltz: Jean Highlands: Linda Ridder: Cathy Schaefer: Rita Suddarth: Mary Ellen Thomas: Linda Tonnancour: EVERYONE WHO LOVES AND CARES ABOUT GREAT DANES CAN SUPPORT THE CHARITABLE TRUST! Since its inception, the GDCA Charitable Trust has been a well-utilized vehicle for many fanciers intent on improving the lives of this breed we all so dearly love. Currently the Trust supports all GDCA rescue efforts on a national basis, assisting on average 1800 Great Danes each year who find themselves in need of shelter, food and medical care. In addition the Trust funds critical medical research which is assisting the scientific and medical communities in their efforts to help our dogs live longer, healthier lives. Each year scholarships are awarded to deserving young people involved with Great Danes, to assist them in their educational pursuits at the college level. Hopefully, these talented individuals will include Great Danes in their adult lives, and continue the legacy of caring and protection of the breed well into future years. Although the Trust, in these very early years, is already experiencing considerable support from the Great Dane fancy, increased support is necessary if we are to fulfill our mission. As they say, "no contribution is either too small or too large". Many individuals have begun directing honorariums and remembrances to the Trust in lieu of other monetary expressions of gratitude, celebration and sympathy. All of these funds assist the GDCA in its efforts to better the lives of Great Danes. We encourage you, your friends, family and business to consider making a gift to the Trust the next time you are providing a birthday wish, wedding or anniversary present, memorial on behalf of a recently departed loved one (human and non-human alike), specialty judge s gift or any other occasion in which a meaningful expression of kindness is in order. In addition, we encourage you to consider including the Trust in your estate plans. It seems only fitting that we remember these animals which have brought us so much joy during our time on earth after we are gone. There are many ways in which one may contribute to the Trust. Some individuals choose to send a monthly contribution, others make an annual gift. Others utilize the Trust for special occasions. Whatever you may choose, it's an ideal way to make a tax-deductible gift that you know will go directly to the health and welfare of the Great Dane. 16 P a g e

19 HELPFUL HINTS FROM PURINA! How to Feed a Picky Eater Posted on: June 17, 2014 Previous Article Next Article FEEDING A FINICKY DOG Is your dog a picky eater? Does he regularly refuse to eat, or only eat very little of his dog food? There are a variety of reasons why a dog may become choosy about his food. TOO MUCH VARIETY It may be that you're offering your dog a large variety of foods, which could encourage him to refuse his regular food in order to see what will be offered next. Some dogs are eager to eat a particular pet food for several days, and then suddenly this eagerness vanishes and they eat reluctantly or refuse to eat for a few days. DIGESTIVE DISCOMFORT Sometimes a refusal of food is the dog's attempt to control calorie intake. Overeating can cause a dog, like a human, to experience an uncomfortable feeling. It can be normal for a dog to attempt to relieve his discomfort by not eating or eating very little of his food. ASK YOUR VETERINARIAN If your dog isn t normally picky about his food and you've avoided creating "problem eater" habits, a trip to your veterinarian may be in order. Any deviation from his normal habits may be a sign of illness. Your dog s health depends on a regular and well-balanced diet. Hopefully the information in this article will help correct your dog s appetite. 19 P a g e
20 VALLEY FEVER! Many of us like to hike with our dogs in the desert. We all know that we have to be cautious of snakes, coyote, scorpions, and a multitude of other critters. One thing that I want to warn our readers about, especially those traveling to dog shows in certain areas. VALLEY FEVER As the rains fall and awaken the spores that cause VALLEY FEVER. Please be careful and limit your hiking in the areas known for this swift and deadly virus Valley Fever is caused by fungi in the dust in desert regions especially Arizona and the San Joaquin Valley of California. It can also be found in other areas of Southern California, Utah, Texas and New Mexico. You can get the disease from inhaling the spores. Valley Fever is known to affect humans, dogs and cats. That is right, you can get this disease just from BREATHING! People and animals are more susceptible when they are around disturbed soil such as getting caught in a dust storm, HIKING, biking or digging. Apparently the incidence of Valley Fever is on the rise. According to the Southern Arizona Humane Society, Valley Fever is perhaps the most common chronic infectious disease we see in the dogs that come to the [shelter]. Its prevalence in our shelter dogs surpasses even tick fever and heartworm disease. Even though the actual number of cases is a small percentage of the millions of people and pets living in and visiting the endemic areas contract the disease. Of that percentage, some show no symptoms or get over it on their own and some fall swiftly and never recover. However, if you or your pet contract the disease, it is not uncommon to have more severe, ongoing problems that require months to a lifetime of treatment. It is a good idea to know what to watch for if you live in or are visiting one of these areas. 20 P a g e
