1 TJENCO DAGO FALKO FLEX The Springfield K9 Unit will be hosting our 21 st annual Springfield K9 Competition on Saturday, June 18 th at 12:00 PM. This event has always been a time for family and friends as well as the community to have the opportunity to come out for a few hours and watch police dogs and their handlers from around the state. We have tried to showcase the training of our dogs without making the competition too stressful on the dogs or handlers. Most of the events are directly related to the patrol dog s task of finding or capturing the bad guy. If there is an event that you don t feel comfortable with, then don t participate in that event. The dogs can wear whatever collars they wear on-duty. The event is free for handlers and the public. Entry is limited to 15 dog teams. We hope to see you there. 2 2016 SPRINGFIELD K9 COMPETITION RULES 1. INDIVIDUAL EVENTS WILL HAVE MEDALS AWARDED BASED ON THE FASTEST TIMES. TOP DOG WILL BE AWARDED BASED ON TOTAL POINTS EARNED IN ALL OF THE EVENTS. POINTS ARE EARNED BASED ON THE PLACE YOU FINISH IN EACH EVENT. 1 ST PLACE = 10 2 ND PLACE = 8 3 RD PLACE = 6 4 TH PLACE = 4 5 TH PLACE = 2 ALL OTHERS GET 1 POINT FOR COMPETING IN THE EVENT. 2. THE DOG MAY WEAR THE COLLAR HE WEARS ON DUTY, INCLUDING E- COLLARS. HOWEVER, A COLLAR CORRECTION MAY NOT BE GIVEN ON THE FIELD. IF YOUR DOG WON T OUT AT A REASONABLE TIME WITH OTHER THAN A COLLAR CORRECTION, THE HELPER WILL SLIP THE SLEEVE AND YOU CAN OUT THE DOG OUTSIDE THE STADIUM. 3. DOGS MUST STAY ON THE BITE FOR AT LEAST THREE SECONDS. AN ELECTRONIC TIMER WILL INDICATE WHEN THE BITE MAY BE RELEASED. 4. DOGS MUST BE ON LEASH WHEN OUT OF CARS, EXCEPT WHEN COMPETING. 5. CAR WINDOWS MUST BE CLOSED ENOUGH SO THAT DOG CANNOT POSSIBLY GET OUT OF POLICE CAR.

3 21 ST ANNUAL SPRINGFIELD K-9 EVENTS 1. AGILITY COURSE The dog will follow the agility course beginning with obstacle #1 and continue through obstacle #8. Time will begin running when the judge instructs the team to proceed at the starting cone and continue until the finish cone has been reached. If a dog is unable to complete an obstacle, after a minimum of one attempt, the handler and dog may circle the complete obstacle and continue with the course. *The agility course will include the following: Two jumps approx. 3 in height A culvert for the dog to crawl through 6 feet jump, which has a raised platform on the other side to protect the dog from falling six feet. (Dog may be assisted over the jump.) A wooden window frame approx. 3 in height An inverted V style climbing wall A set of approx. 6 cones that the dog and handler will run around A clean refrigerator box for the dog and handler to crawl through 2. AREA SEARCH The team will search a field with the dog indicating the location of the hidden helper. Time will begin when the handler directs the dog to search and continue until the dog alerts and the handler notifies the judge of the hidden helper s location. A fivesecond penalty will result if the dog and handler indicate the wrong enclosure. An alert must consist of the dog scratching and/or barking at the enclosure. *The search containers will be four large wooden boxes. 3. FASTEST DOG The dog will be put on a sit or down, approx. 50 yards from a helper. When advised by the judge, the dog will be sent to apprehend the helper. The time will start when the dog is released to pursue the helper and stopped when the dog passes the finish cone located in front of the helper. 4. SUSPECT APPREHENSION The dog team will be directed to apprehend two helpers; the second helper will be hidden on the opposite side of the field. At the direction of the judge, helper #1 will begin fleeing away from the team and the dog will be sent to apprehend him. Time will begin when the dog is released. After running at least half way to helper #1, which will be marked by a cone, helper #1 will stop, turn around and put his hands in the air. The handler will then recall his dog and redirect the dog to apprehend helper #2, who will be running from the second enclosure. The dog will seize helper #2. Time will stop when the dog releases the sleeve. The dog can be outed verbally or physically (within reason).

4 5. HANDLER PROTECTION The officer will make a conduct a pedestrian stop with the dog remaining in the police car. After a brief conversation with the helper, the helper will strike the handler and begin to flee. The dog will be directed to apprehend the helper. Time begins when the dog first touches the ground and ends when the dog releases the helper and returns to the car. * The helper will be directly in front of the police car at a distance of about 20. The handler will have the option of leaving one of the car doors open or using the door popper. NOTE: The timers will advise of any additional rules at the time of the competition. All decisions by the timers are final.

THE UNDERSIGNED AGREES TO HOLD THE CITY OF SPRINGFIELD HARMLESS FROM ANY CLAIM FOR DAMAGES OR INJURY ARISING FROM THE ACTIVITIES IN CONNECTION WITH THIS TRAINING AND COMPETITION, AND WILL INDEMNIFY THE CITY OF SPRINGFIELD AGAINST LIABILITY, INCLUDING COSTS OF DEFENSE AND ATTORNEY FEES ARISING FROM THE ACTIVITIES OF THIS TRAINING AND COMPETITION.
