1 German Shepherd Dog Club of Tasmania Inc 20 th State Breed Exhibition Judge: Mr Vince Tantaro I would like to thank the members and Committee for the invitation to judge 20 th State Breed Exhibition. It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since the first SBE was first held in Tasmania! With this in mind I would like to reiterate the comments made prior to critiquing the Open Classes and at the presentation. As you are all aware, State Breed Exhibitions and or Assessments are conducted by a number of GSDCA Member Clubs and are since the demise of the Main Breed Exhibition one of the vehicles by which breed direction can be given: this I believe is indeed a most questionable aim of this type of an event! It must be noted that as a judge of this event to give true breed direction one would need to judge far more animals than what was entered: I cite the Main Breed Exhibition- the MBE became a useless exercise as what was shown was not a true sample of what was bred in Australia and unlike the GSDCA National Show & Trial its entry was in the end less than 50% of the National. My decision not to award the title of State Sieger (that could only be awarded to a resident animal) to any of the Open class was made with due consideration to the quality and type of the animals exhibited and what I consider to be an essential component of the award being that the animal must be graded Excellent Merit. I also applied strict criteria to the awarding of the GSDCA Excellent Merit grading: the animal must be of high quality, of desired type and have the potential to consolidate the breed through its pedigree and or progeny as seen at the show. I can understand the confusion that has been generated with regard GSDCA Judges awarding this grading in the past. I can only reiterate that this grading which is the most prestigious grading the CSDCA has on offer must be only given to high quality animals that compare to national and breed standards: the award is not in place to be awarded to the best local resident animal. I can only again say that the standard of animal except in a few exceptions was below my expectations. Many of the animals exhibited have restrictions with regard to the forehand assembly and the length and lay of the croup. Of concern was not only the length and lay of the upper arm but the length and lay of the shoulder coupled with good to short necks. The croups are in the main short and steep and the withers normal with a number of animals falling on the forehand. There is no consolidation of desired type and I would suggest that the breeding program of many breeders is based on compounding rather than improving these problems in a stepped approach utilising well angled dogs- noting of course the chances of fixing everything with one sire is not a science. Hence it is important in the first order to cement type and a degree of predictability and then to concentrate on improving the bitches faults. The use of local dogs is to be applauded however one must do so with due consideration to what is it exactly you want to improve on. In closing I would like to thank all the exhibitors who entered this SBA- knowing some stayed away I can only encourage those that have been aggrieved in the past or believe whoever is judging this event may be incompetent to actually support the show: the show cannot be representative of exactly what is the state of the Breed in Tasmania at this time without all exhibiting. 2 Sires Progeny Ch Tuabu Midnight AZ BSCL1 Group represented progeny by two dams and is sire typical displaying with good distinction between the sexes: Slightly elongated in body proportions, medium size to large, good head slightly and expression, wide set ears, under jaw should be stronger eye colour should be darker. Good length of neck, normal withers, croups are short and steep. The group in the main stands not quite correct in front, good fore and slightly short under chest. They step slightly narrow front and rear, hocks should be much firmer. In movement they show good ground cover where the reach should be much freer. Overall the ligaments and firmness should be much firmer. The sire is an impressive masculine dog however his virtues are overshadowed by the fact that he is not well angled. The forehand assembly and croup are significant problem within the group and therefore this dog should only be used over well angled firm dry bitches. Dams Progeny Bekannte All About Moiye Roxet AZ BSCL1 Represented by 2 sires. In some cases progeny are mother typical but not of her quality. They have good proportions, medium to above medium size, medium strong, very good expression. Good heads, under jaws should be stronger and eye colour darker. Good length of neck, normal withers croup is short steep. Stand not quite correct in front. Good fore and slightly short under chest, good fore and hind quarter angulation. Under jaw should be stronger good length of neck, high withers firm back short steep croup. Stands correct in front. Very good fore and under chest. Very good fore slightly deep hind quarter angulation. Steps cow hocked behind hocks and elbows should be much firmer. In movement shows good ground cover, reach and drive should be more effective and wither held higher.

Well developed fore chest. Stands not quite correct in front pasterns should be firmer. Good fore very good hind quarter angulation. Steps narrow front and rear. In movement shows good ground reach and drive should be more effective. Overall ligamentation and right ear should be much firmer. Large, medium strong well coloured and pigmented. Very good type and overall proportions. Masculine head, desired expression, dark eye colour, dark masking. Good length of neck, high withers firm back slightly short well moulded croup. Stands correct in front. Well developed fore chest, slightly short under chest, very good fore and hind quarter angulation. Steps slightly narrow behind, hocks should be firmer. In movement shows very good ground cover, very good reach, powerful drive, back should be firmer. Losses lead maintained his wither showed very good balanced movement. A young dog that impresses in stance with his true GSD expression, colour and pigmentation that with further maturity will consolidate his virtues and offers a degree of predictability when to be bred with well angled bitches that have a lower A stamp score than him. Good fore, slightly short under chest, good fore and slightly deep hind quarter angulation. Steps narrow front and rears, hocks and elbows should be much firmer. In movement shows very good ground cover, reach could be freer, powerful drive. Falls slightly on forehand. Off lead gaiting showed good movement falls on the forehand. A bitch that impresses with her feminine expression and in stance. It is essential that when she is bred with that only dogs that are of desired type who have a high predictability and are very well angled are considered.

Hocks are firm. In movement shows very good ground cover with powerful drive, the reach should be freer. The gaiting performance was marred by over double handling. The dog impresses with his masculinity and type. In movement shows very good ground cover with good reach and powerful drive. Loose lead falls on the fore hand. A dog that impresses with his absolute masculinity and true GSD expression. It is unfortunate that none of the progeny presented in the progeny group are of his equal or better quality than him and I reemphasise the need to utilise this dog only with very well angled bitches requiring improvement of strength, colour and pigmentation.

In movement shows far reaching powerful gait. Loose lead showed very good movement maintaining her wither. This bitch despite is well known to me as are her progeny and at this show had 1 class winner. Her progeny as a group are not the same quality as her but are above average with very good overall anatomical construction that stand in her type. A high quality bitch of the correct size, desired type and well deserving of the grading of Excellent Merit. MERIT 2. * DEBBY VOM HOFFERWEG ( IMP DEU ) - 26 / 2 / 12 - SZ S. Nino Von Tronje x D.
