7 TM Waterfall News A message from WATERFALL architectural style and open spaces that make visiting the shops a pleasure, not a chore. Another building stealing the headlines is the new PwC headquarters under construction. You can t help notice the strange-looking concrete tower as you drive along the N1 near Allandale. If you ve dismissed it as an odd affair, don t be too hasty: what you re seeing is the internal workings, with an iconic twisting building still to be created around it. You can read about the 26-storey PwC headquarters in this edition of the magazine. Another exciting addition to the Waterfall Development will be the Keith Kirsten Garden Centre. This will really take us back to nature, with a great selection of indigenous plants and trees and the famous horticulturalist himself available to give advice on what to plant and how to nurture it. The unmissable news at Waterfall right now is no doubt the opening of the Mall of Africa. After years of construction the Mall of Africa is finally trading, and it s brought a massive array of shopping, dining and entertainment activities right to our doorstep. The Mall has been designed as a visual, social and economic anchor for Waterfall and offers a variety of familiar national and international brands. We re pleased that it s given us the chance to attract more unusual outlets, too, so you ll be able to find something offbeat amongst the trusted and familiar brands. If you haven t checked it out yet, please do even if you re not a fan of shopping, you ll be impressed by the We re delighted that Keith has chosen to make his longawaited return to the retailing side of his business at Waterfall. Because it s within the development itself you ll be able to choose whatever your garden needs and have it delivered to your door, so there s no excuse for neglecting your gardening. But if you prefer to just eat fruit and vegetables, rather than actually grow them, you can always visit the centre s restaurant instead. Finally, the regular health article from Netcare this month focuses on epilepsy. This is a condition where waves of abnormal electrical activity in the brain provoke a seizure, and as anyone living with epilepsy knows, it s a very frightening condition. Please read the article to understand what to look for. Until next time, stay safe and enjoy your Mall of Africa mega-shopping! Until next time, Waterfall Management Waterfall Issue

9 Waterfall News NEW ICONIC PwC HEAD OFFICE AROUSES CURIOSITY AND TURNS HEADS Speculation and interest surrounding the nature of the iconic, concrete tower structure situated along the N1 highway, near the Allandale interchange, has recently peaked. This tower constitutes the central shaft of the new landmark 26-storey PwC headquarters building, which is being constructed in Waterfall City, for the owner Attacq, by property developer Atterbury. This is the first high-rise development in Africa s booming new corporate headquarter destination. The central tower of the construction is already drawing attention. Motorists driving along the N1 should also be on the lookout for the #Rise Get Behind Your Team banner being showcased on the middle section of the building shaft. Attacq proudly supports the South African Olympic team and the banner encourages all citizens to get behind the South African athletes, who will be competing in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games from 5 August to 21 August this year. The R1,5 billion skyscraper comprising m² of modern offices, is designed to house about PwC employees in an efficient, optimally-designed workplace. 10 Waterfall News will be visible from almost anywhere within a 30km radius. Waterfall City is a true work, live and play destination. The landscaped lawns of Waterfall City will provide lush green space which is positioned atop five levels of superbasement. This is encircled by the bustling Waterfall City, with its mixed-use development including offices, as well as the mall itself, states Wilken. The attractive lawns will provide a landscaped playground for a multitude of outdoor activities and a venue for recreation options including an intimate amphitheatre with an interactive fountain and stage area, adds Wilken. The PwC development marks the consolidation of various Gauteng offices to a central headquarters for the leading accounting and business services provider. The office consolidation enables PwC and a number of other large businesses that are moving their corporate headquarters to Waterfall City to reap the business efficiencies and cost benefits of being in a central, easily accessible Gauteng location, states Morné Wilken, Chief Executive Officer of Attacq. The construction for the new PwC building began in the first quarter of The project, which is well underway, is expected to take 36 months and is scheduled for completion in early Waterfall City is South Africa s largest urban concept development, designed to provide everything expected of a world-class modern city, with all the conveniences of a leading, quality urban environment. Waterfall City is strategically and conveniently located next to Gauteng s main arterial route, the N1 between Pretoria and Johannesburg, and spans land on both sides of the N1 highway, stretching from the Woodmead off-ramp in the south to just beyond the Allandale interchange in the north. phases, due to the unique twist-design of the structure. It gently twists through its height to frame the grand urban park, which forms the green heart of Waterfall City. The building is also designed to conform to the internationally-recognised Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standard. Guy Steenekamp, a director at LYT Architecture comments: The brief for the PwC Tower at Waterfall City called for an iconic building-form that would be unique to the development and which would mark the property as a new top tier destination for business. Given the height of the building and that it is situated on a hillside rise in Waterfall City, it will easily be the tallest structure on the corridor between the Sandton CBD and the Pretoria/Tshwane CBD. The PwC Tower We are proud to work with PwC as the developer of its new head office, which is set to become a landmark building for South African business in Attacq s pioneering Waterfall City, says Jeanne Jordaan, Atterbury Property s Director of Commercial Development. In addition to PwC, the burgeoning Waterfall City continues to attract leading businesses, including Servest and Colgate Palmolive, Cell C, Group 5, Altech, Digistics, Massbuild, Cipla, Golder & Associates, MB Technologies, Virgin Active, Premier Foods, Dräger SA, Westcon Group, Novartis, Covidien, Cummins and Honda Motor SA. 12 TM Waterfall News GO WILD WITH KEITH KIRSTEN It is with much excitement that the new Keith Kirsten, situated in the world class, prime retail development of Waterfall Wilds, in the Waterfall development, will be offi cially open to customers in June With its modern look, new positioning and brand overhaul, this Centre is expected to support the growth of this much loved gardening franchise. Our new store brings a new-generation Garden Centre to the area, which will not only offer quality, range and value to customers who love their home and garden, but we will also be offering lectures and the opportunity to come and get advice on starting and/or improving your own garden all while still being able to order a variety of plants, shrubs and trees and have them delivered directly to your home, says Keith Kirsten. The new Keith Kirsten in Waterfall will offer more than 7500 plants, shrubs and trees and includes an extensive outdoor area covering over 1,5 acres, within an attractive landscaped environment designed by Keith Kirsten and Ray Hudson, who has been creating the SANBI Kirstenbosch exhibit for Chelsea for the past 22 years. Further to this, our store and advice offered will also have a strong focus on the environment, as good environmental practice makes economic sense, says Kirsten. We have the sincere belief that there is a great deal that every single one of us can do to lessen the environmental crisis in which we collectively fi nd ourselves today, and what better place to start than in our own gardens. Eco-living might not always be more cost effective or convenient and there may be fewer alternatives available in South Africa than in other countries, but that s no justifi cation for continuing the cycle of waste and pollution that we have become accustomed to. As a result of this, water-wise gardening, growing your own vegetables, fruits and herbs, generating no waste but rather depositing it back into the soil as compost and rain water collectors are just some of the wonderful ideas that will be on offer at Keith Kirsten at Waterfall. We are committed to operating an environmentally-responsible company and believe the integrated actions of our operations to conserve natural resources and protect the environment, makes good business sense, adds Cary Goodwin, owner of the fi rst franchise of this well-known, well-loved South African brand. Keith Kirsten at Waterfall will also be offering many alternatives to harmful pesticides and chemical fertilisers. We are looking forward to welcoming new customers through our doors and are confi dent they will enjoy the Keith Kirsten experience. By offering the very best plants, gardening products and service to the local community and gardening friends from afar, we hope to establish our footprint deep in the Waterfall family. Our fantastic interior shop design and outdoor displays mean that we re providing an attractive and inspiring gardening experience for our customers, concludes Goodwin. 14 Waterfall News 12 Waterfall Issue NETCARE WATERFALL CITY IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF ITS EPILEPSY MONITORING UNIT This specialised unit is designed to evaluate, diagnose and treat seizures in patients By Dr. Raksha Sitharam, Neurologist Netcare Waterfall City Hospital MBChB (Natal), FC Neurol(SA) PEOPLE THINK THAT EPILEPSY IS DIVINE SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DON T HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT CAUSES EPILEPSY. BUT I BELIEVE THAT SOMEDAY WE WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT CAUSES EPILEPSY, AND AT THAT MOMENT, WE WILL CEASE TO BELIEVE THAT IT S DIVINE. AND SO IT IS WITH EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE. - HIPPOCRATES A seizure is caused by waves of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, and epilepsy is a condition where people have repeated, unprovoked, seizures arising from aberrant electrical firing in the brain. However, it is important to note that not everyone who experiences a seizure has epilepsy. A seizure can also be provoked by drug intoxication or withdrawal, alcohol withdrawal and low blood glucose as well as other disturbances of composition. Other various conditions which can mimic seizures are panic attacks, fainting spells and migraine with aura. While epilepsy can be as a result of infections of the central nervous system, brain tumors, vascular malformations, trauma to the brain, stroke, genetic syndromes and brain damage from birth injuries in the majority of the cases the cause is unknown (6 out of 10 people). Approximately 65 million people worldwide have epilepsy and it is estimated that 1 in every 100 South Africans will suffer from epilepsy at some point in their lives. SEIZURE SYMPTOMS are varied and depend on the brain area affected. Generalised seizures begin when an electrical discharge occurs that involves both hemispheres of the brain. The type of seizure most people are familiar with are tonic clonic or grand mal seizures in which a person is seen to stiffen the body and jerk their limbs, often with tongue biting. Other generalised seizure types include: Clonic seizures: Rhythmical jerking muscle contractions; Myoclonic seizures: Rapid lightning-like muscle contractions; Generalized spike and wave activity observed in a patient having a seizure confirming the diagnosis of epilepsy on video EEG monitoring.

15 TM Waterfall News Clinical examination of the patient is conducted. Routine EEG (electroencephalogram) records the brain s electrical activity by using small metal discs attached to the scalp. Imaging the brain with MRI (recommended imaging of choice) or CT scan. Set up of a routine EEG by the clinical technologist. Tonic seizures: Sudden muscle stiffening; Atonic seizures: Sudden loss of muscle control leading to collapse; Absence seizures: Sudden staring lasting 5 to 10 seconds with impaired consciousness. Focal seizures arise from an electrical discharge in a region of the brain and depending on which area is affected, the seizures will vary in presentation. These seizures can appear less dramatic. They can present as jerking of one limb or the face if the motor cortex is involved. If the seizure involves the occipital lobe, there may be flashing lights. Some focal seizures cause alterations of awareness and a person may be observed to stop responding and stare into space. They may also engage in repetitive behaviors called automatisms such as chewing or smacking movements of the mouth, walking or running. DIAGNOSIS OF EPILEPSY An accurate diagnosis of epilepsy can sometimes be challenging as many conditions can mimic epilepsy especially conditions that result in changes in behaviour. The following information is required: A history from the patient is obtained, and if possible, an eye witness account of the seizure. Other investigations may be tailored according to the patient s clinical presentation. VIDEO- ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC (EEG) MONITORING This is a way of simultaneously recording the brain s electrical activity and patient behaviour on video, on a continuous basis, over an extended period of time. A routine EEG lasts about 20 minutes and may not be sufficient to give the information needed to treat seizures adequately. As a result, the purpose of the video EEG is to see what is happening during a seizure or spell and to compare the picture to what the EEG records at the same time. If the clinical event correlates with epileptic activity on the EEG, then this is an epileptic seizure. Patients are referred to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for Video-EEG for several reasons: 1. To distinguish epileptic seizures from conditions that look like epileptic seizures e.g. syncope or fainting spells, abnormal rhythms of the heart, stroke-like episodes, sleep disturbances, psychogenic seizures and other behavioral disorders. 2. To identify the type of seizure(s). 3. To localize the part or parts of the brain where the seizure(s) begin. 4. To quantify the frequency of events. 5. To detect seizure(s) which can be difficult to recognize. 6. To assess response to anti-epileptic treatment and to make adjustments. Epilepsy monitoring is used to capture spells, which may be (Dr. Raksha Sitharam, Dr. Shaheed Gora and Dr. Vanmala Naidoo). epileptic, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures(pnes) or physiologic epileptic seizures. This characterisation of spells is of paramount importance as only epileptic seizures are treated with anti-epileptic drugs. Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES) make up a significant percentage of patients with presumed epilepsy. These patients are often treated for years unnecessarily with anti-epileptic drugs. Hence an appropriate diagnosis is key to appropriate treatment. Video EEG is the Gold Standard for the diagnosis of PNES. THE EPILEPSY MONITORING UNIT (EMU) TEAM The EMU team is led by three neurologists (Dr. Raksha Sitharam, Dr. Shaheed Gora and Dr. Vanmala Naidoo). The team also consists of a clinical technologist, EEG technicians, specialist nurses, and a dedicated psychology team. Procedure for referral: Patients can be booked into the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit after consultation with the neurologist, Dr. R Sitharam, at Netcare Waterfall City hospital. The patient can be referred by their GP, specialist or by self-referral. The technologically-advanced diagnostic capability of continuous video EEG monitoring in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit has, to an extent, revolutionized the care of epilepsy patients. Epilepsy is a disease that carries significant comorbidity.hence a better diagnostic capability will offer epileptic patients a better quality of life. Waterfall Issue

16 Waterfall News WATERFALL S IRRIGATION PROJECT Every day, water is pumped out of the Jukskei River to keep the common grounds at the Waterfall development looking lush and lovely. The water is pumped through a vast irrigation system that includes two dams, a pumphouse and lots of piping. Now it includes a sophisticated filtration and ozone treatment plant, too, after tests showed that water from the Jukskei River is polluted. The irrigation water is sourced from the Jukskei River, under license from the Department of Water Affairs, to irrigate all the common areas. The Jukskei River runs through the city and upstream pollution from numerous sources necessitated the treatment of the water to ensure safe irrigation water. Engineer, Thys Redelinghuys, was brought on board to manage the treatment and supply of irrigation water to the different developments. A nonprofit company, called Waterfall Common Services Company (WCSC), was created to manage the irrigation water for all areas of the development. This company also looks after other common services to improve the reliability of things like the street lighting, way finding and landscaping, he says. The first task was the irrigation water, however. Even though it is only used for grass and plants and not for vegetables or in private gardens, Redelinghuys says it has to be clean and safe. People walk their dogs on the common areas and children play on the lawns so you don t want to use water that is a potential health hazard. The quality of the water from the river is unpredictable and variable and we had E.coli measurements taken from the river that were shown to be unhealthy. You don t want to irrigate with water like that. The answer was to install a filtration and ozone treatment plant that removes insoluble solids from the water and injects ozone (O³) into the water to kill bacteria and viruses. Water from the river flows into a primary dam from where it is then pumped to the filtration and ozone treatment plant. The treated water flows into dam two before being pumped to the various Estates. The plant is fully operational and the Ozone injection rate is tested daily and, since the ozone plant came on stream, the water quality has improved dramatically. The secondary dam, receiving the treated water, is much cleaner now, Redelinghuys says. The irrigation water treatment plant and pump station is situated on Waterfall Country Estate, from where the water is supplied to the various Estates and common irrigation areas. WCSC oversees and co-ordinates the fair distribution of water, the maintenance of the infrastructure and the apportionment TM of the cost of the supply of water. 14 Waterfall Issue

22 TM Waterfall News GAS SPACE HEATING higher temperatures and provides more heat as no heat is lost through the chimney. However, Gas Regulations prevent vent-free Gas space heaters from being installed in bedrooms, bathrooms and confined spaces without adequate ventilation. The more economical option, Gas Convector Wall Heaters are also highly efficient and a flexible alternative option. These fan-assisted units, such as the Rinnai Avenger 25 and Rinnai Enduro 13 units, can be permanently mounted to a wall or can be portable, so you can store them away in summer. The ever increasing price of electricity has driven the cost of heating a home electrically to often uneconomical and unsustainable levels. This, along with the increasing awareness around preserving the environment, has shifted demand towards a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly way of heating homes and living spaces. An alternative to using traditional electrical heaters and wood or coal fireplaces, is to install Gas Fireplaces and Gas Convector Wall Heaters as these are easy, cost-effective clean ways to heat your home. A Gas Fireplace also gives that warm, welcoming glow that many people appreciate, without the effort of chopping wood, buying coal, lighting a fire or raking out the ashes every morning. Gas space heaters are also a great way to heat a room or an open plan area, 20 Waterfall Issue and the portable version means you can take the warmth with you, provided that you have installed additional gas points around your home. They warm the air to a higher temperature than underfloor heating systems and heat up faster when you need warmth quickly. However, the type and model to choose depends on the space you want to heat. There are two basic types of Gas Space Heating: Vented (also known as flued) and Vent-free (also known as flue-less) units. Top manufacturers, such as Infiniti Fires, offer both these types. A vented Gas Space Heater must be directly vented to the outside through a hole in the wall or a chimney. However, a fair amount of the heat generated is lost up the chimney. A vent- free gas heater does not require a physical vent, but it does require adequate ventilation, as it burns at These fan-assisted units blow the heated air around the room or open plan areas and are thermostatically controlled, ensuring that the room is evenly heated to the set temperature. These Rinnai models have two built-in adjustable timers that can automatically switch on at a set time, heat the room to the required temperature and automatically switch off at a set time. An advantage is that these heaters do not have visible, touchable flames that can injure a curious child. While the casing gets warm, it is not hot enough to cause injury. Of course, heaters with visible flames, glass fronts, or glowing ceramic elements look lovely, but can cause serious burns if touched. Additional safety features include Oxygen Depletion Sensors and Flame Failure devices, which shut off the gas if the oxygen level in the room drops below a safe level or if the flame goes out. Whichever version you choose to use, both your heating bills and the environment will benefit. For more information: Tel: info@envirofuel.co.za

Once we finalised the plans, the mall sold itself and there s already a waiting list of tenants wanting to come into the mall. Agility, safety, convenience and cost-effective operation are what people want and there is no vehicle in South Africa that delivers on these features like the Club Car Precedent i2 and the Club Car Villager 4 golf carts from Smith Power Equipment (SPE). The Precedent i2, probably the most advanced golf cart ever built, has set the standard for style and performance. Powered by the Club Car electronic fuel injection (EFI) engine, arguably the most economical petrol engine in the market GOLF CARTS or, if preferred, an electric motor, it offers the quietest and smoothest ride. From its 360 wrap-around bumper to its ergonomic seats, the Precedent i2 provides comfort, stability and safety on the undulating ground conditions of a golf course or on the streets of Waterfall, where your Club Car will handle like a sports car. The attention to detail is remarkable, says SPE s Club Car manager, Stephen Mangold, with each detail taking the user into account from the Monson top, which channels the water away from the passengers to the newly-designed interior with more storage space for personal items. With the Villager 4, the most economical personnel carrier in the Club Car range, the entire family can be transported around the estate! Whether you choose the petrol or electric model with the renowned and innovative Excel Electric Drive System, your ride will be fast, smooth, quiet, safe and classy! Some of the more important features of the Villager 4 include impact and UV resistant body panels, a 360 bumper system, specially-designed ergonomic seats ensuring the most comfortable ride, and Club Car s exclusive aluminium chassis that eliminates rust and corrosion, signifi cantly extending the vehicle s life span. Mangold stresses that Club Car has one of the lowest cost of ownerships in the industry. With the E.R.I.C. (Efficient, Reliable, Intelligent and Connected) advanced battery charging system and the new Subaru EX40 EFI engine, which Club Car chose for its best-in-class power and reliability, Club Car now enjoys a 35% power boost while using 35% less fuel. The longer you own these machines, the greater the return on your investment, says Mangold, because their lower operational, maintenance and fuel costs accrue year after year, repaying your investment with long-term returns. Finding people in the industry in South Africa to sing Club Car s praises is not diffi cult. Two of these are the well-known CCJ golf director, Bevan du Plessis who says: Club Car is one of the foremost brands in this industry., and Dave Usendorff, the Els Club Copperleaf Operations Director who says: the quality of Club Car is unquestionable For more information please contact SMITH POWER EQUIPMENT on Waterfall Issue

36 Waterfall Out & About SINGLE PARENT ADVENTURES The number of single parent families worldwide is enormous and South Africa is no different. What to do with the kids is a frequent conundrum after we ve done almost every attraction in towns and cities, trying to keep our children busy remains an ongoing challenge. By Wayne Pritchard As single parents, my business partner and I were always on the look-out for adventures to share with our kids. We weren t interested in yet another sanitised urban play pen. We were looking for real adventures, and we were keen to join other single parents, company for both the kids and ourselves. When we conceived the idea of organising single parent and children s events, we were amazed by the response to what we knew was a bit of a challenge for some. And it was equally interesting to learn that there are indeed detractors, who believe being a single parent is akin to being a leper, and that one should not impose this status on oneself that it is always an avoidable choice. Thankfully, these commentators are in the minority. We are by no means psychologists, or family therapists, we are simply people who enjoy family adventures, and in our case 34 Waterfall Issue

37 Waterfall Out & About most excursions involve kids with single parents. THE CHALLENGES OF BEING A SINGLE PARENT Where to start, we hear the collective response, and yes, let s not lament about what we all know already. Let s have a look at some of the social implications, and those with which we live. Two come immediately to mind: How to avoid going out of my mind as I sit in awkward isolation, busying myself with smart phones, ipads, or newspapers, over a bottomless cup of coffee, while the kids busy themselves at another adventure theme park. Longing for some adult conversation intimacy seems a distant thought, I d be happy with some friendly adult conversation that would be a great start. THE OPPORTUNITY OF BEING A SINGLE PARENT Work pressures are growing, and cancelled engagements with kids are becoming frequent. The ever-competitive work place has little regard for our single parent obligations, and stealing a lunch here and a dinner there just doesn t cut it our kids will inevitably drift away. Surely the biggest opportunity is to share the responsibilities of parenthood, naturally, for those who can. And for professional single parents, the ones who derive much value from their careers, sharing with other single parents can be seen as the ideal situation. ADVENTURES FOR SINGLE PARENTS AND THEIR KIDS We are professional single parents and we decided to start a business serving the interests of single parents in South Africa, and specifically those who are looking for adventures to share with kids. In the case of moms with boys, it could be the desire to share exciting activities with them, for dads with girls, it could simply be trying to connect with them emotionally. It is nothing new that adventure travel is the fastest growing travel segment in the world and this includes South Africa. There has never been a better time to get your family away from the trappings of modern urban living, and join others who have exactly the same needs and wants as you. And above all, build memories while you re just having fun. Single Parent Adventures arranges and manages adventures for groups of varying sizes, meeting the challenges of being a single parent. We look for experiences with a perceived element of risk, and dare we say, danger; a place or space where our attention is captivated by naturally beautiful surroundings, not smart phones and, above all, activities that give us the opportunity to connect with those who often pay the price for us to have careers and be professional single parents. 38 Waterfall Travel Red Brocket AMAZON RAINFOREST My third and final destination in a three-week birding/mammal watching trip to South America, was a six-day visit to the Amazon Rainforest in the far North of Mato Grosso state in Brazil at the confluence of the Cristalino and Teles Pires rivers, tributaries of the massive Talapajos river, itself a tributary of the mighty Amazon. Photography and text by Ron Searle 36 Waterfall Issue

39 Waterfall Travel included a mother and calf of the totally bizarre-looking Brazilian Tapir which can weigh up to two hundred and fifty kilograms, both fabulous-looking Agami and quaint-looking Zig-zag Herons, a small family of surprisingly active Hoatzins, Razor-billed Curassow, Cryptic Forest Falcon, a large gathering of resting Capybaras, the world s largest rodent (up to sixty-five kilograms), and numbers of terrapins basking on the larger rocks protruding from the waters of the river. The Hoatzin (sixty centimetres in length), another of the birds listed and described in David Chandler and Dominic Couzens book selection of 100 Birds You Must See Before You Die, has rather unkempt plumage, staring eyes set in blue skin with a wild-looking crest four to eight centimetres in length, giving the bird a startled and curious appearance, but very much in line with its strange lifestyle. Its rather poor flight capability coupled with its inability to walk or swim, ensures that the Hoatzin is a sedentary bird. They inhabit the thick foliage of trees and vines, clambering clumsily in their search for their preferred diet of leaves and buds from in excess of fifty plant species. A short flight from Cuiaba to Alta Floresta, the nearest town, ended in total chaos at the manually-operated baggage collection facility at the airport. Surprisingly, we managed to retrieve our luggage and were warmly welcomed by staff representatives of the Cristalino Jungle Lodge, and then transported to the banks of the Teles Pires River where we boarded motorised boats for the short journey up the Cristalino River to the Lodge. A welcoming family of three Giant River Otters (parents plus juvenile) met us at the wooden pier of the Lodge, a good omen for our birding which got off to a flying start with a roosting, beetle-browed Crested Owl observed in the grounds of the Lodge. Recognised by birders worldwide as one of the finest birding destinations in the world, the Cristalino Lodge, (thanks to the tireless efforts of Vitoria Da Riva Carvalho and her family who conceived it fifteen years ago), offers visitors twenty kilometres of trails through a variety of pristine forest types, two fifty metre high observation towers with privileged views of the surrounding forest canopy (twentyfive to thirty-five metres high) and a fleet of motorised boats with experienced guides, to assist visitors spot the mammals and birdlife on the sixty to one hundred metre wide river and along the forest trails. A list of almost six hundred bird species, thirty per cent of the total bird species recorded in Brazil, from an area of twelve hundred square kilometres straddling the Teles Pires and including the Cristalino Lodge area, has been recorded there, with new species still being regularly added. Accordingly, it is not surprising to discover that the digestive process of the Hoatzin is unique amongst birds. Whereas with most birds, digestion takes place at some distance along the alimentary tract, the Hoatzin deals with its vegetarian intake at the front-end of its gut. Food ferments in the bird s crop and adjacent oesophagus, both muscular processors, taking up to two days to complete the digestion task. Its fermentation vessel is so large and heavy that it limits the size of its sternum and consequently also the size of its flight muscles, accounting for its poor flight performance. It also results in the bird emitting a musky odour akin to fresh cow manure, hence the Guyanans name stinking pheasant. All too quickly the days flew by as we birded the trails, searched the river banks and climbed the two observation towers for the numerous mammal/bird targets each member of our group had set for themselves. Noteworthy sightings Top left: The pier at the Cristalino Jungle Lodge. Above: Green Iguana. Waterfall Issue

40 Waterfall Travel our group to Cristalino Lodge on the fi rst day, were not prepared to accept the shut-down each evening at 20h00 of the generators, which stopped the overhead fans in the rooms. They accordingly persuaded lodge management to keep the generators and fans on 24/7, thereby providing considerable relief from the heat for all lodge occupants for the duration of our stay. Above: Brazilian Tapir. Not surprisingly, the breeding behaviour of the species is likewise unusual. The youngsters have a survival strategy which includes plunging into the river water below its nests and swimming, sometimes under water, to escape predators, before clambering out onto the foliage of overhanging trees or vines using two claws located on the elbow of each wing to assist them in making their way to safety. Other notable bird sightings included Red-fan Parrot, Kawall s Amazon, Below: Anhinga and its Piranha prey. Paradise Jacamar, Tooth-billed Wren, Gould s Toucanet, Alta Floresta Antpitta, screeching White-bellied Parrots and canopy specialties observed from the two towers, such as vivid Pompadour and Spangled Cotinga, Bare-necked Fruitcrow and a kaleidoscope of colourful tanagers and parrots. The heat and humidity were largely responsible for determining our daily routine of trail walking, boat excursions on the river and visits to the observation towers. The possibility of spotting a Harpy Eagle, one of the most sought-after birds in the world, guaranteed a daily visit to the towers, (unfortunately in vain), with a fourhour break at mid-day because of the intense heat. Unbeknown to us, a honeymoon couple from Kuwait, who had accompanied A long walk on Ariosto Island in the Teles Pires River produced a third bird species described in the Chandler/ Couzens book, the Amazonian Umbrellabird. Listed no doubt for its rather absurd appearance, the Umbrellabird is the largest of the South American cotinga family, being fi fty centimetres in length and weighing up to fi ve hundred grams. Largely black in colour, both male and female sport an umbrella-like overhanging fringe of plumes as well as a black wattle, (fi fteen centimetres long in the males), which hangs from the chest area of the bird. Males of the species gather at leks to display their wares with up to six males present at a time, ten to twenty-fi ve metres up a tree. Lekking is both visual and vocal, the wattle of the male being infl ated and apparently responsible for the emission by the males of a booming sound likened to far-off cattle and heard from a considerable distance. On the fi nal day, a walk in the forest at dusk to an artifi cial waterhole produced a cracking Black-spotted Bare-eye, a bird more commonly associated with ant swarms. This fi nal leg of my trip added an additional 142 species and 50 lifers resulting in a fi nal trip tally of 520 bird species recorded of which 229 were lifers and 27 mammals of which 23 were lifers. An overnight stop at a hotel in Cuiaba in transit to Sao Paulo concluded what was, for me, one of the most memorable and enjoyable trips of a lifetime. TM 38 Waterfall Issue

42 Waterfall Lifestyle SA GUIDE-DOGS ASSOCIATION Owning a service dog or guide dog is a life-changing experience for someone with a disability, or visual impairment it s an all-inclusive package of independence, mobility, companionship and dignity a priceless gift! S A Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind s founder, Gladys Evans, who had failing eyesight, brought the first guide dog Sheena onto the African Continent after training at Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in the UK. Gladys started the S A Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind (GDA) in Johannesburg in Since those early days, the Association has gone from strength to strength, and now also has a training centre in Cape Town. The Association is now training dogs to assist people with other disabilities other than blindness. Service Dogs and Autism Support Dogs are ready and able to perform a variety of basic tasks designed to bring independence and companionship to their owners. The Service Dog becomes the physical extension of their recipients by retrieving dropped items, turning on light switches, and much, much more, while the Autism Support Dog plays a physical role in preventing an Autistic child from running away. Guide dogs breeding lines are carefully selected to produce the best possible dogs. Each puppy s first year is spent in the family home of a volunteer Puppy Raiser, where the pup is thoroughly socialised before it returns to the Association at age months for 6 months of formal training. All applicants and dogs are carefully matched according to factors such as size, character and personalities. Training of the dog and the ultimate recipient is first done at the Association s residential training centres for approximately 2 to 3 weeks, followed by home and neighbourhood training to suit each client s requirements. Apart from independence and mobility by means of a dog, the Association also has the College of Orientation and Mobility, offering people with visual impairment an alternative form of independence training. The College of Orientation and Mobility has been providing training to O & M Instructors since 1974 and is the only O & M Instructor training centre in Africa. A two year Diploma course comprising of theory, practical and workplace experience is offered. O & M Practitioners provide training for safe and independent mobility to visually impaired persons allowing the recipients to live more freely, devoid of reliance on other people. The College provides direct O & M training to visually impaired persons and school children, too. PUPPY RAISING The Puppy Raising Scheme was developed to provide South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind with dogs who are well prepared for both advanced training and their future work as Guide Dogs. The majority of the puppies come from their own breeding programme, but they do accept selected donated puppies occasionally. The pups are placed with their Puppy Raising families at around 7 weeks of age. 40 Waterfall Issue

43 Waterfall Lifestyle Puppy Raisers are very special volunteers who take a puppy into their homes, lives and hearts for 11 to 18 months and then, just when that mischievous puppy has developed into a well behaved and mature dog, they give them back! Many of them then start all over again with a new puppy! While the puppy is with the Puppy Raisers, they are socialised as much as possible. It is very important that the dogs are introduced to as wide a range of experiences, places, people and animals as possible. Taught how to behave in the home, e.g. not messing, chewing, sleeping on furniture etc. Taught how to behave around people, e.g. not jumping up on them. Taught basic obedience work. Taught how to walk on a lead, according to GDA s specifications, e.g. no sniffing, scavenging or pulling and without being distracted by what is going on around them, e.g. barking dogs at gates. The Puppy Raising Scheme is a supervised programme, beginning with an 8 week puppy socialising course at their Training Centre, so the Puppy Raisers need to reside in Johannesburg or Pretoria. The older pups move onto a monthly group or individual training session with one of the Puppy Raising Supervisors, either at GDA s training centre, a shopping centre or a suburban area. All these training sessions take place during working hours, Mondays to Fridays. Puppies can only learn appropriate and desired behaviour when the Puppy Raisers are with them to teach them, so a home where the puppy would be left alone all day during the week would not be suitable. In addition, the puppies need to attend training sessions and the Puppy Raising Supervisors need to be able to do home visits with the Puppy Raiser and not just the puppy. Homes in which the Puppy Raiser works half day are, however, acceptable. The male pups are neutered between 6 and 8 months of age, but the females are usually only spayed after a year of age, so they will have at least one season while on the Puppy Raising Scheme. South African Guide-Dogs Association covers the veterinary costs incurred for pups on the scheme, in addition to vaccinations, deworming and micro-chipping. When Puppy Raisers go away on holiday or bitches are in season, the Association will board the pups in their boarding kennel. Food for the pups on the scheme is also sponsored. If you have any queries regarding the Puppy Raising Scheme, please contact Leigh on or TM LeighD@guidedog.org.za. The pups need to be:- Introduced to people of all races and ages, especially children. Taught to relieve themselves only on command when on lead and working and not to mess in inappropriate places. Introduced to and be able to behave in an appropriate manner in shopping centres, post offices, shops, restaurants etc. Photo by Victoria Pilcher Receiving no Government funding, the Association operates entirely on donations. If you would like to make a donation, or assist in any way, visit for more information, or join their facebook or twitter pages: Twitter The SA Guide-Dogs Association is looking for new Puppy Raisers as they have 14 pups in their Puppy Block and another brood bitch due to whelp. 45 Waterfall Advertorial David Rogers - Head of Innovation & Technology. Visible on the back of the computer screen is the ELE energy saving unit. GREEN COMPUTERS IN EDUCATION They say we are in the fourth Industrial Revolution and interconnectivity of devices is heralding a fundamental change in the way workers function in society. By David Rogers, Head of Innovation & Technology at Kyalami Schools Mobile devices have moved into the classroom as improvements in both the local infrastructure and external internet connectivity have made instant access to information and creativity possible. At Kyalami Schools, (Beaulieu College, Beaulieu Prep and Kyalami Prep), all students from Grade 6 to Grade 10 use ipads in the classroom for both accessing resources and creating digital artefacts. All schools are now connected to the Internet via Fibre with the college enjoying 200Mbps. The schools use Google Apps for mail and collaborate using both a local Virtual Learning Environment and Google Docs. Computers in each classroom provide the teachers with access and a way to display content to their classes. With the unreliability of electricity supply and future costs of energy to our schools, Kyalami Schools (NPC) have sought ways to improve the electrical effi ciency of our computer centres. In the past, labs have been heavy consumers of electricity with each computer using up to 250watts while in use. Much of this has gone into heat and keeping these centres cool has required expensive air conditioners that consume even more energy. Beaulieu College has now combined with the British company, Extreme Low Energy (ELE), to utilise Intel s latest addition to their range, the NUC. ELE has managed to further reduce the power consumption of this device and match it to a low energy-consuming monitor that is powered over an Ethernet cable in the same way as Wireless Access Points, Telephones and CCTV cameras. This means that new computer venues do not need electrical connections - just normal network cabling. There are no moving parts in the devices so noise is reduced, the devices run cooler and they will last much longer than standard desktops. The computers are more powerful than the desktops they have replaced and will use less than 10% of the energy of the old systems with each unit using 20watts. The systems run off a bank of Lithium ion batteries that are charged overnight. Load-shedding would have no impact on the class as there is no electrical supply required during class time. In future, Beaulieu College will be looking to charge the batteries via solar panels, reducing running costs and our carbon footprint even further. This is the fi rst such installation in Africa and I am sure other schools will be seeing the benefi ts of low energy consumption in years to come. TM Waterfall Issue

47 Waterfall Lifestlye TUG-OF-MARRIAGE FACTORS TO CONSIDER Extracts taken from The Tug-of-Life by Izabella Little-Gates, CEO of the Life Talk Forum by Nicoleen Davies, Director Life Talk Forum In our previous article Happily ever After we introduced the Tug-of-Life Methodology as a tool to help with challenges faced in a marriage. As a reminder, Life Talk s Tug-of-Life methodology is a solution-driven approach, useful in helping you to unpack life s complexities within a situation, to identify its challenges and solutions. Visualise your marriage as in the centre of a tug-of-war rope. In this Tug-of- Marriage, there are a number of contestants trying to grab your attention and pull you in a certain direction. Previously, we covered the Challenger contestant, representing the troublemaking aspects that appear in your marriage such as communication breakdown, infidelity, selfishness and substance abuse. The next aspect affecting marriage, which we would like to introduce, are the Factors. THE FACTORS Factors try to explain why some of the Challengers exist, writes Izabella. Some of them may make sense but others just provide excuses that attempt to justify negative behaviour. By feeding the Challengers with these justifications, Factors often fuel the Challengers growth and strength. There are any number of factors such as boredom, chemistry gone AWOL and stress. Understanding Factors can provide insight into ways to weaken the Challengers grip. THE STRESS AND STRAIN OF LIFE There are so many factors making life and marriage challenging the pace we have to function at, change we are exposed to, technology, demands on our time, relationship issues, financial aspects, housekeeping and commuting all take their toll. Research has shown that work stress is linked to unhappy marriages. The question is, do we accept them as scapegoats and let them disempower us, or do we plan constructive action, says Izabella. The reality is that we can t avoid stress and strain but, we must be able to recognise it so that we can manage it. One way to do this is to stay connected (and we don t mean via WhatsApp and ) and you will find that, by turning to each other, you are, in fact, strengthening your relationship. Talking and sharing your burdens are very therapeutic and, when you can t see the wood for the trees, perhaps your partner can. Verbalising concerns and fears often diminishes their power. You will find that simply talking about your day and its highs and Waterfall Issue

48 TM Waterfall Lifestyle lows helps to relieve daily strain and can help you focus on what is really important and what isn t, especially when things seem hectic and hopeless. Another very important aspect to remember here is balance. Yes, we have to work hard but remember to take time out to relax with your partner and your family and to have some fun. Life is about living and not just existing. THE DIVORCE CULTURE Izabella points out that, divorce is so common place. An increasing number of friends and acquaintances select it as the solution; and our psyche is constantly bombarded with messages that whisper, If you are not happy then get out or It s no big deal, loads of people do it. Rather than being steered to explore all solutions first, we re seduced by the fellowship and apparent sanctuary of the world s divorce queue. So, if you feel that you are heading in this direction, take action and start working on your marriage. The following ideas may be useful: Actions speak louder than words greet your spouse warmly, show affection, listen when they are talking to you, do small things to make them feel loved, and show gratitude if they do something nice for you. Try to remember what brought you together in the first place and focus on those positive feelings and memories. In the New York Times, health blogger Tara Parker-Pope s book For Better: The Science of a Good Marriage, she reveals that a lot of research shows that the main determinants of happy, sustained marriages are actually small, tangible things like having have at least five small positive interactions (touching, smiling, paying a compliment) for every negative one (sneering, eye rolling, withdrawal). Something to think about Be clear and clarify what you need to change to make the marriage work and talk about it in a calm manner to jointly commit to making the marriage succeed. Turn this into a win-win situation. Don t play the victim. Take care of your physical appearance. Be positive and confident. Find things to do together and to reconnect. Consider professional counselling if you aren t making positive progress. BOREDOM Living in an instantaneous world, with an overload of stimulation and information, we find that a culture has developed which cultivates boredom if those sources of entertainment suddenly go away. The novelty has worn off, you know everything there is to know about your spouse and nothing seems thrilling anymore. Every marriage goes through this at some point but, boredom in a marriage can very quickly destroy it. It can lead to infidelity, to a lack of respect and it becomes all too easy to be over-critical and inconsiderate of each other. It is important to remember that a marriage goes through stages a natural ebb and flow often when domesticity has well and truly set in. Finding things to do together maybe do a date night once a month and take turns to organise it (keeping the date activity a secret!); take up dance lessons or join the gym; start that project on the house which you have been putting off. By creating new interests you can re-energise your marriage. Other factors impacting on the success of your marriage could be illness, cultural or religious differences, family traditions, gender roles and high-pressure careers, even a lack of time. As we said at the outset, be aware of these factors and see them for what they truly are. Allow yourselves the opportunity to invest in your marriage, remember the commitment you made to each other and minimise these factors before they become insurmountable issues. The key is doing something together, something you can share in, which can help keep your marriage thriving! 50 Waterfall Lifestyle CAN YOU GO ANYWHERE WITH WHAT S IN YOUR WARDROBE? We all need different clothes for different occasions and for our very different lifestyles. As our lifestyles change our wardrobes need to change, too. By Rachel Lynch Rachel Lynch What you need in your wardrobe now is probably very different from what you needed even five years ago. So, how well do the clothes you have in your wardrobe work for your life now? If you want to look great and not make expensive mistakes, planning what clothes you need is essential. Your closet should completely suit your lifestyle and how you spend your time. If you spend 50% of your time at work, then it makes sense that at least half of your clothes need to be business-appropriate. Think about your daily activities, such as work, the school run, the gym etc and note how much time you spend at each. Compare your activities to what s in your wardrobe. Most of your clothes should suit 48 Waterfall Issue

51 TM Waterfall Lifestyle the things you do most often. But you will also need some items for special occasions and outings, too. You may not go to many cocktail parties, weddings or funerals, and even though winters in Johannesburg are short, you ll still need to have the right clothes to carry you through these events. Once you ve completed this exercise you ll probably see a few gaping holes which should be filled with clothes that can take you anywhere. To make the most of your wardrobe, take a look at these tips: If you take a good look in your cupboard right now you should be able to build a capsule wardrobe made up of as few as seven pieces which can all work well together. Arrange your wardrobe by types of clothing, hanging all jackets together, all skirts together, all blouses together, etc. Break up the suits, and mix up your tops. Then start to build your capsule around your best neutral colours, such as navy, grey, black, camel or brown. Add two or three colours that will blend well across your outfits, in fabrics that coordinate, and are similar in style. For example you might have: One matched pair of trousers and a jacket (casual or formal) A second jacket to wear with the trousers One jumper or dressy tee shirt One skirt Two or more, tops. From these few items you can mix and match to create over 49 different outfit options by wearing your clothes in different combinations or pairing the jackets from some suits with the skirts or pants of others. Do you have some pieces that could work for different activities? Perhaps you have a pair of dress trousers that could be worn with a casual top for a weekend gathering? Or a dark suit skirt that could go with a beaded or lace top for an evening THINK ABOUT YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS WORK, THE SCHOOL RUN, THE GYM ETC AND NOTE HOW MUCH TIME YOU SPEND AT EACH. COMPARE YOUR ACTIVITIES TO WHAT S IN YOUR WARDROBE. out? Perhaps your dark work suit would be suitable at a funeral? Identify the holes. Will what is in your wardrobe right now take you wherever you need to go? Focus on the most challenging part of your body and build your wardrobe around those pieces which work best for that challenge. Figure out where you can get the types of clothes that suit your figure the best. When you understand what styles work for you and where to get them it s much easier to create the ideal wardrobe. And, you ll save time and money when you re shopping for clothes. Now that you can see what you need in your wardrobe, start looking for the things that will make the biggest difference first - casual clothes, if you don t have enough weekend wear; a winter coat if you don t have one - and then move on to the other things when you can afford them. You can always expand your capsule wardrobe inexpensively with belts, scarves, wraps, cardigans or jerseys and other accessories. This way, you can bring other tones and colours into your wardrobe to create lots more outfits, and you won t get bored with your clothes. In no time you ll have a workable wardrobe of clothes that you love and that will take you everywhere you need to go. Building such a wardrobe takes time and money and it will change as your needs change. But, as you ve discovered, you don t need to have a lot of clothes to look as though you have a lot of clothes - you just need to combine them cleverly. And if every new purchase complements what you already have in your wardrobe you ll find it much easier to be suitably dressed for every occasion. It isn t difficult to plan and build a wardrobe of clothes that completely suits you and your lifestyle, and a little planning will make a big difference to how you look, how you feel, and how you spend your money. If you need some help figuring it all out, contact Rachel Lynch at Personal Best Image Consultancy: or or rachel@personalbestimage.com. With a little bit of planning you ll look amazing every day! 54 Waterfall Lifestyle BOOK REVIEWS Compiled by Beverley Hermanson Like It Matters By David Cornwell When Ed meets Charlotte one golden afternoon, the fourteen sleeping pills he s painstakingly collected don t matter anymore: this will be the moment he pulls things right, even though he can see Charlotte comes with a story of her own. They try to make a life in Muizenberg, but old habits die hard, and they become embroiled in a scheme that soon slips out of their control. In Like It Matters, each line of text, each mark on the page is meticulously crafted as the novel charts, with striking flair, the life of a man cast adrift. David Cornwell is a writer and musician. Born in Grahamstown, he currently lives in Cape Town, where he writes fiction, films and songs for his rock band KRAAL. Price: R250 David s writing has appeared in a number of publications, including the Mail & Guardian, Prufrock, Aerodrome, Jungle Jim, New Contrast, the Chiron Review and Quiddity International Literary Journal. Like It Matters is his first novel. My Cape Malay Kitchen By Cariema Isaacs My Cape Malay Kitchen is Cariema Isaacs s heartfelt and poignant account of the extraordinary relationship between herself and her father and how that was reflected in their shared passion for food and cooking. She recollects all of the dishes they cooked and ate together, and shares her childhood memories of growing up in Bo-Kaap (the Cape Malay Quarter in Cape Town), lending insight into the culture, religious ceremonies and family events that have shaped the Cape Malay community into what it is today. Price: R295 But My Cape Malay Kitchen is also a book about flavourful food, richly spiced curries, indulgent cakes and decadent desserts. Cariema s refreshing approach to food showcases many of the much-loved Cape Malay vintage recipes as well as a selection of modern dishes, and is ideal for anyone who needs a little inspiration in the kitchen. Cariema Isaacs was born in Scotcheskloof in Bo-Kaap. She has a natural flair in the kitchen, and from an early age was familiar with ingredients that her grandmother would transform into the most scrumptious dishes. Cariema lived in Cape Town for most of her life, before moving to Johannesburg and thereafter Dubai, where she and her husband raise their two teenage sons. My Cape Malay Kitchen is her first book. Angry Owl By Kerryn Ponter Angry Owl is the story of an owl who is fed up with the weather. He sits on the branch of a tree and watches as a huge storm brews while he is caught in the rain, wind, thunder, snow, hail and even a tornado. When at last the storm passes, Angry Owl is surprised to see the most beautiful rainbow in the sky. He realises that next time there s a bad storm, he needn t be angry or upset because sometimes there are wonderful surprises at the end of a difficult time. Price: R60 Kerryn Ponter is a freelance artist with a degree in Fine Art from Rhodes University. As a mother of two young children who love stories, she has plenty of practice in writing and illustrating stories for children. Books published by Random House Struik.
