International Animal Action International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals Spring 2010 DOGS SAVED IN BANGKOK The IAAPEA are now helping to take care of these dogs while suitable new homes are found in Thailand for the animals. Amidst the splendour of Bangkok s temples and on its busy streets, thousands of stray cats and dogs endure a miserable existence, their plight is largely ignored. The dog had a fractured skull and sustained a 5 cm deep wound to his left ear. The IAAPEA s groundbreaking animal work in Asia is saving many dogs, cats and monkeys from torture and abuse. The International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals have saved 52 dogs in Bangkok, from painful experiments in Asia s notorious vivisection laboratories. Some of these stray dogs and cats are used as research tools in Asia s vivisection laboratories, others end up on the dinner plate. The IAAPEA has also helped in a rare successful prosecution for cruelty to animals in Bangkok. 2 BBC WORLD SERVICE IAAPEA Secretary General Brian Gunn is a regular broadcaster on the BBC World Service. He has recently been interviewed regarding his undercover work, cosmetic testing on live animals, European legislation and also the desperate plight of the monkeys in Asia. The BBC World Service is the BBC s International radio station and as a result of these interviews millions of people all over the world are now aware of the IAAPEA s global campaign against cruel animal experiments. EXPERIMENTS ON HORSES Government figures reveal that 9,365 experiments were performed on horses and donkeys in Great Britain during The horses and donkeys were abused in fundamental biological research, veterinary medicine, applied studies, human medicine and dentistry. Picture Brian Gunn/IAAPEA IAAPEA SCIENTIFIC BOOKS PUBLISHED IN RUSSIAN The IAAPEA s Honorary Scientific Director, Dr Robert Sharpe, has had 2 of his books translated and published in Russian. The Cruel Deception The use of animals in medical research in which Dr Robert Sharpe makes his own valuable contribution to the debate with this thoroughly researched book. He presents the scientific facts often very difficult or impossible for the public to gain access to together with the opinions of scientists and other professionals in the field. Science on Trial. The Human Cost of Animal Experiments The Evidence: 101 documented examples of failures, fatalities, misleading results, mistakes and missed opportunities which have occurred through our acceptance of vivisection. 2 Tel: Int. 3 IAAPEA PICTURES USED ALL OVER THE WORLD A picture is worth a thousand words. During every second of every day, people all over the world are looking at IAAPEA pictures of animal experiments at our award winning multilingual CHINESE DUTCH ENGLISH FRENCH GERMAN ITALIAN JAPANESE KOREAN PORTUGUESE RUSSIAN SPANISH internet website: During 2009, millions of people from 214 different countries viewed our animal research images on the worldwide web. The unique animal testing pictures taken undercover by IAAPEA Secretary General Brian Gunn are also being widely used on the social network sites Facebook, (300 million active users) and MySpace, (over 200 million users). Newspapers, magazines, politicians, animal groups, students, and TV stations all over the world are downloading and using our high definition pictures. The IAAPEA pictures are also being used in television drama programmes, for example over 8 million viewers in the UK watched the hit BBC1 television detective series Ashes to Ashes and saw our animal experimentation images. During 2010 Brian Gunn will be continuing his daring undercover work. As a result millions of people worldwide will be able to see the vital photographic evidence exposing the true horrors of animal experiments and so hasten the day when this barbaric method of research is abolished. The website can be viewed at The Skinner Box, this device has been equipped with an electrified grid. In aversive conditioning experiments the animal is forced to repeatedly press a lever in order to avoid an electric shock to its feet. GLOBAL CAMPAIGN SUCCESS WITH ALTERNATIVES TO DISSECTION The IAAPEA has already helped save the lives of millions of animals that would have been sacrificed for dissection in schools, colleges and universities all over the world. Support for our International Dissection Campaign continues to grow and the largest science education association in the world (NSTA) now acknowledges the educational value of non-animal learning methods as replacements for animal dissections and supports student dissection choice in all classrooms. The IAAPEA will continue its global campaign to promote and provide dissection alternatives until the use of animals in education is where it belongs out of science books and into the history books. 4 WHERE THERE S A WILL THERE S A WAY! At certain times in your life it is important to review your Will. These include the death of a partner, marriage (or remarriage), divorce and the arrival of grandchildren. When you ve made sure the ones you love are looked after in your Will, please spare a thought for laboratory animals. The International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals has already saved countless laboratory animals from being tortured. We also fund medical research into cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses without animal experiments. With your support we can save many more dogs, cats and other animals from suffering painful experiments in the future. We are the voice for the voiceless. Only you can provide the vital funds. Please help us to save the animals. A Will not only makes sense, it makes perfect peace of mind. 4 Tel: Int. Tel:

IAPPEA 40th ANNIVERSARY April 24th 2009 marked two significant Anniversaries for on that date forty years ago the IAAPEA was founded at a meeting held at the Royal Festival Hall (London) and ten years later (1979) the IAAPEA established the date as World Day for Laboratory Animals. The date April 24th was chosen as it was the birthday of Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding who was the IAAPEA s first Patron. Well-known as the architect of the Battle of Britain in the Second World War, Lord Dowding was also a valiant fighter for the welfare of animals and used his membership of Britain s House of Lords to speak out on behalf of the animals. Of his 29 speeches in the House of Lords, 26 were devoted to animal welfare, most of these concerned laboratory animals. His wife Lady Dowding led the IAAPEA as the Association s President/Patron for 22 very successful years. To commemorate our Anniversary a fund raising dinner, church service, exhibition and fund raising brunch were held in Sweden. These events were organised by IAAPEA s dynamic and hardworking President Ingrid Persson. Millions of dogs, cats, monkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats and horses have been saved from torture in laboratories all over the world by the IAAPEA. Unlike other animal societies the International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals, is the only International Organisation campaigning solely for laboratory animals globally. The IAAPEA is also the only antivivisection organisation which has Consultative Status with the United Nations. The IAAPEA have held protests, campaigns and events in the following countries Argentina Australia Austria Bangladesh Belarus Belgium Brazi Cambodia Canada China Chile Columbia Croatia Czech Republic Denmark Egypt Estonia Finland France Germany Great Britain Greece India Indonesia Ireland Iran Israel Italy Japan Kenya Liechtenstein Luxemburg Malaysia Mexico Monaco Netherlands New Zealand Norway Pakistan Peru Poland Portugal Russia Saudi Arabia Singapore South Africa South Korea Spain Sweden Switzerland Taiwan Thailand Turkey Ukraine USA Vietnam We could not have saved so many animals from painful experiments without your wonderful support. Your voice makes a difference to the countless, helpless animals who have no voice. But there is still so much to be done. We cannot turn away now from the voiceless laboratory animals who so desperately need our help. The IAAPEA will be expanding its global campaign to ensure a world where no animal lives in pain and terror in a vivisection laboratory. Web: iaapea@hotmail.com 5

THE US MILITARY BLOW UP ANIMALS TO TEST BODY ARMOUR Researchers strapped pigs and rats into Humvee simulators and subjected them to about 200 blasts, according to Pentagon documents. These explosions ranged in intensity, wounding some of the pigs and killing others. Pigs that were not dressed in body armour died from blasts within 24 to 48 hours, while those with armour survived significantly higher blasts. The tests were carried out over an 11 month period and more tests are scheduled. In a letter of protest to the American Ambassador, IAAPEA Secretary General Brian Gunn condemned the barbaric warfare experiments and demanded that no further tests would be conducted. MULTIMEDIA EXHIBITION OF ALTERNATIVES IN ROME Working with our partners International Network for Humane Education the IAAPEA helped sponsor a multimedia exhibition of alternatives. This was held at the Seventh World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in Life Sciences held in Rome from 30 August 3 September The Congress brought together 950 Scientists from Governments, Academia and Industry as well as experts and representatives of major animal welfare organisations. The Multimedia exhibition offered a programme of free demonstrations in replacement methods as well as a range of freeware alternatives for delegates. Over 100 alternatives were available at workstations corresponding to different disciplines, including Anatomy, Anaesthesia & Critical Care, Clinical Skills & Surgery, Physiology and Pharmacology. Alternatives included Critical Care Jerry, a canine mannequin with heart and breathing simulation, for veterinary clinical skills training. A POP-trainer (pulsating organ perfusion) for live laparoscopic surgery training using only ethically sourced animal organs. Advanced virtual reality (VR) software for surgical skills practice. The Biopac Student Lab for physiology self-experimentation and a wide range of simulators and software alternatives. 6 Tel: Int. Tel:

MONKEYS TO MARS At a run-down research centre which was once the pride of Soviet Science they have seen it all a brutal civil war, freezing winters and starvation. Now, if the scientists at this Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy have their way, one of the monkeys could be plucked from its cage and sent on a pioneering mission to Mars. We have plans to return to space, declared Zurab Mikvabia, the Director of the Institute. Residents of the Abkhazia capital Sukhumi call the place the monkey nursery. But the Institute fell on hard times after the collapse of the Soviet Union as Abkhazia fought a war to break free of Georgian control and fell into a long period of economic isolation. Hundreds of monkeys died or disappeared during the war as Abkhazia separatists and Georgian troops fought over Sukhumi. Many monkeys were shot, others were let out of their cages and left to run around the city. Hunger and illness killed many more. There are now 350 monkeys, mostly baboons and macaques, confined in grim outdoor cages. The Institute is in talks with Russia s Cosmonautics Academy about preparing monkeys for a simulated Mars mission which could lay the groundwork for sending monkeys to the Red Planet. Estimates for the length of the journey to Mars vary depending on the type of mission envisaged, but the European Space Agency says its proposal for a round-trip mission would take 520 days. If Russia pursues the idea of sending monkeys to Mars, Mr Mikvabia s Institute could become the site of an enclosed biosphere where they would be kept for long periods to simulate spaceflights. In a twist reminiscent of science fiction, the project would also include a robot designed to take care of the imprisoned monkeys. The robot will feed the monkeys, will clean up after them. Our task will be to teach the monkeys to cooperate with the robot, Mr Mikvabia said. Picture Brian Gunn/IAAPEA Web: iaapea@hotmail.com 7

BEST FRIEND PROJECT SAVES DOGS IN 50 COUNTRIES A huge number of dogs are killed worldwide so that veterinary students and researchers can dissect their cadavers to learn anatomy. Often very cruel methods are used to kill the animals, including beating them to death, gassing or electrocution. Working with our partners, the International Network for Humane Education, a successful widespread distribution of the innovative Virtual Canine Anatomy DVD has now taken place. Veterinary anatomy teachers, campaigners and students from 50 countries have now received this humane teaching aid. As a result countless dogs have now been saved all over the world from torture and abuse. HISTORIC SEMINAR ON ALTERNATIVES IN KENYA FUNDED BY IAAPEA A groundbreaking initiative to promote and implement replacement alternatives across Africa was sponsored by the International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals. The first Pan-African Seminar on Alternatives to Animal Experiments in Education and Training was held in Nairobi, Kenya during September The importance of this seminar jointly organised by Africa Network for Animal Welfare and InterNICHE cannot be overemphasized. It presented the opportunity for the African continent to learn and help implement alternatives without the harmful use of animals. The seminar also supported existing African initiatives for human education and interest in better training for life and health science professionals. The 2 day Alternatives Seminar brought together 22 campaigning organisations from the following 11 African countries: Zimbabwe Ethiopia Somalia Kenya Nigeria South Africa Sierra Leone DR Congo Tanzania Uganda Rwanda The InterNICHE experts were from England Mexico India Egypt with over 100 Kenyan teachers, surgeons, government ministers and officials attending. The Kenyan Minister for Wildlife and Forestry, Honorary Dr Noah Wekesa, opened the Alternatives Seminar. In his presentation, Dr Wekesa appreciated the importance of pan-african events, and acknowledged the potential of new technology and alternatives. Josphat Ngonyo, IAAPEA s representative in Kenya and Founder of the African Network for Animal Welfare said The Alternatives Seminar will empower participants to be ambassadors for alternatives in their own countries. They will have the information resources and support from the International Network for Humane Education, for this to be achieved. The impact on Kenya will be considerable, particularly now with government support for humane approaches and innovative technology in education and training. 8 Tel: Int. Tel:

EDUCATION A record number of talks and demonstrations on alternative research techniques were given by IAAPEA officials and representatives to schools, colleges, medical schools and universities throughout the world during 2009 The IAAPEA s global humane education campaign has helped to influence millions of young minds during the last decade. RUSSIAN LAWYER ASSASSINATED Animal Rights lawyer, Stanislaw Markelov, was assassinated in the centre of Moscow. The IAAPEA had been funding conscientious objector Roman Belousov s campaign against the Moscow State University for forcing him to participate in animal experiments. Stanislaw Markelov was helping in this historical case and his tragic death is a major blow to the Animal Rights movement in Russia. DURING THE NEXT 7 DAYS OVER 3 MILLION DEFENCELESS ANIMALS WILL BE ABUSED IN LABORATORIES. HOW YOU CAN HELP In these challenging financial times here is probably the most effective single way to support our work and you need not send any money as long as you live! It s a chance for you to help stop dogs, cats, monkeys, rabbits and other animals from being tortured all over the world in cruel and painful experiments by including a gift to the International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals in your Will. We are the voice for the voiceless You can help us save millions of animals from being tortured for many years to come. Thank you from those who cannot speak Web: iaapea@hotmail.com 9

IAAPEA LAUNCH MULTILINGUAL COSMETIC WEBSITE Due to costs, Animal Rights campaigns and new European laws, cosmetic experiments on live animals are now being transferred from animal laboratories in America and Europe to Asia s notorious vivisection research laboratories. In some of these countries there is no law controlling animal experiments. To help secure a worldwide ban on cosmetic animal testing the IAAPEA have launched a multilingual internet website: This thought provoking website is available in the following 11 languages: Chinese Dutch English French German Italian Japanese Korean Portugese Russian Spanish Pain is not beautiful and the graphic animal cosmetic testing pictures expose the secret world of experimenting on live animals to test cosmetics, shampoos, make-up and other beauty products. These animal cosmetic testing pictures were taken undercover by Brian Gunn, Secretary General of the International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals. Cruel animal cosmetic testing on rabbits, dogs, cats, mice, guinea pigs, rats and monkeys are shown on this unique photo gallery. This is the ugly side of the beauty business animal cosmetic testing images you were not meant to see! Our website also includes an International cruelty free shopping guide on where you can buy cruelty free cosmetics and household products. You can search by product category or visit the cosmetic companies websites, direct from our site. Companies listed in the Leaping Bunny Guide have pledged not to test on animals and their ingredient suppliers have made the same pledge, thus resulting in products which are 100% free of new animal testing. The website can be viewed at MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN INDIA The IAAPEA working with the International Network for Humane Education helped sponsor the National Workshop Symposium on Potential Alternatives to Dissection and Animal Experimentation in Zoology and the Practical Curriculum in India. This Groundbreaking Symposium held between November 2009 in Jaipur, successfully brought together zoology and other teachers from across Rajasthan and elsewhere in India. In a Resolution adopted unanimously at the National Symposium the participants called on University Boards of Study to remove animal use from their syllabus. With various academic bodies involved in the event, this Resolution is very important. To support the process of replacement with alternatives, learning tools worth over 100,000 were distributed by InterNICHE directly to the participants and other teachers. Distribution will take place across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and other states, in what comprises a major investment to Indian life science education. Snehal Bhavsar, IAAPEA s representative in India and Founder Trustee of the Gujarat Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) said Our wildlife is a national treasure and its use for dissections and animal experiments in education is a scandal. I m very happy that for the first time in northern India, teachers have taken the initiative to get together on one platform and to call for full replacement. It is clear that many zoology teachers are strongly against animal use and in favour of better teaching methods. 10 Tel: Int. Tel:

TORTURE KNOWS NO FRONTIERS During the next 12 months over 150 million innocent, defenceless animals will be abused in animal research laboratories The IAAPEA is the only anti-vivisection organization which has Consultative Status with the United Nations. The International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals is the only International Organization campaigning globally SOLELY for laboratory animals. Founded in 1969, the IAAPEA established World Day for Laboratory Animals. Introduced in 1979, World Day for Laboratory Animals is now a focal point for Actions Worldwide. The IAAPEA fund humane medical research without animal experiments into cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses.
