"Winter Wind" was WD and BW, while W B went to Neatha Robinson's Charves Rachel Rae, handled by Ric Chashoudian. It was a five-pointer at the Contra Costa K. C. show, June 12th, and both lucky winners emerged as new Champions! Best of Breed and Group Second under Thomas Lee to "Bobby Dazzler," while Winners Bitch, BW and BOS to finish was Mel Fertado's Brentnut Brenda (Ch. Bardene Boy Blue - Ch. Anstamm Dark Secret)... a first homebred Scottie champion for Mel, I believe. 36 Winners Dog for the big five-pointer (and "Brig" only needing one!) and the title to Beulah White's Charves Brig O'Doon (Ch. Bardene Boy Blue - Ch. Balachan Gambit). Incidently, three of the four champions to finish bear the prefix of Bob and Mildred Charves... Congratulations! How great to see the wonderful support given to last month's "Special"... so many wonderful pictures... truly a treasure chest of excellent Scotties! And guess who, of all people, got "shut out" by the deadline! Well our support is evident this month, as we did have some really thrilling last minute "happenings" to be proud about. Our "Top Ten" in Breed Competition through shows published in the "Gazette" through March 31st, shows that the lead in still firmly held by Ch. Gaidoune Grin and Bear It, with 116 points earned in 5 BOB wins. Closing the gap, and in second place is Ch. Barberry Knowe Blizzard with 88 points and 7 BOB's. Two points off the pace is Ch. Bala-

Not-S'o-Random Thoughts: That old stand-by Webster defines a Professional as "one who engages in a learned calling or in sport for pay." Exhibiting dogs is one of the few sports where the amateur and professional compete on an equal footing, for the dog is really the object of competition and therefore the handler in theory is only a supplemental factor. Ringside comments to the contrary, I believe this to be true, and further find that in Terriers in particular professionals provide a continuity of knowledge and a high standard of showmanship, grooming and conditioning. The amateur can learn much in attempting to emulate these standards. This combination of much knowledge and long experience can be translated into great authority. Quite often that authority is exercised in selecting dogs for clients, both as purchasers and 40 CH. ''Inheritance'' is o_wned by Ral1>h & Louise Tennant, Greyr1clge, Santa Ana, Calif. (Scbley photo) from pups in a litter. To this extent the professionals provide m u ch good. But they can and occasionally do err. When these occasional lapses occur the recognition and acknowl- ANSTAMM'S TOP-NOTCH STUD FORCE CH. BARDENE BOY BLUE (Eng.-Am.-Can. Ch.) CH. 9 " ~dgement of them can balance the mistake, but stubborn adherence can only lead to confusion and further error. This is particularly true when the interpretation of a standard begins to become synonymous with a particular authority's views. The sport of dogs needs the professional, whether he be handler, judge or breeder. It also needs the novice and the amateur, for only through a continuous infusion of new and dedicated people can it long survive. Authoritative guidance must and should come from the older and in ore experienced, the professionals, but the responsibilities associated with that guidance must be exercised prudently, and proper recognition to those things which reduce the quality of the perfection we are striving for should first come from those most capable to see those errors. K The proposed new A.K.C. regulations which will improve the licensing procedures and invoke stiffer penalties on those who continue to circumvent the regulations pertaining to handlers is a step in the right direction. It will prevent many cases of flagrant exploitation and remove from the sport a number of unqualified pseudo-professionals. But to carry this a step further, a periodic review of the performance and conduct of those others who "engage in the sport for pay" could prove beneficial. In other "learned professions" various remedies exist: an architect plants shrubs to cover his mistakes, a doctor buries his, but when a dog handler continues to exhibit his, everyone loses - the dog, the client, the handler, but most importantly, the breed! Mostly... CAIRNS - (Continued from Page 33) in 11 BOB wins. He would also be McRuffie's Splinters, both with 15 well ahead in "Phillips" points, having earned 2 Group Firsts, 1 Second, Melody of W oodleigh and Ch. Red points. From the list above, topping McGillicuddy is in third place with 41 points scored in 5 BOB wins, the distaff side is "Splinters", with the only other bitch listed being while the fourth spot finds Ch. Caithness Rufus with 20 po1nts and 2 other Cairns have earned at least "Miss Romola". No less than 33 BOBs in a three-way tie with Ch. one BOB, but have scored 13 points Gayla Cairn's Redstart and Starbright's McTavish McDuff. In seventh have gone to Cairns as of March or less. No Best in Show awards place is Bellacairn Blend of Cairn 31st, and the lone Group winner is Den with 17 points and 2 BOBs, but "Jiminy Cricket". Several placements, tied with Taylor's Feeling Chipper, who scored 17 points in 1 win. Also in a tie for ninth place are Ch. Belfre's Gay Robin and Ch.
