3 NOTICE BOARD REMEMBERING MAX MAGDER Dog breeder, exhibitor, All Breed Dog Judge, designer, inventor and successful businessman; Max Magder leaves a large void not easily filled. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family, especially his daughter Lori and son Richard from whom his famed kennel name LORRICBROOK originated. Max was born in Austria in 1927 and immigrated at a young age to Canada with his parents and two older sisters. The family settled in Hamilton, Ontario, where another brother was born shortly thereafter. He won international awards for furniture design, and IKEA and Eaton s carried his lines. Max was also the zesty boss of Du Barry Furniture Ltd., and in his professional career built a multi-million-dollar business out of affordable well-designed furniture. In addition to owning a great number of different breeds, he bred and showed Greyhounds and Whippets to top wins in Canada and the United States. A Whippet of his breeding, Can., Am., & Br. Ch. Lorricbrook Winning Streak set a record of best in shows for the breed in Brazil, and a Whippet of his breeding won the Hound Group at the Windsor Championship Show in England. The dog s name was Can., Am., Eng., Dutch, German and Int. Ch. Lorricbrook Runaway, who at that time was the only Whippet from North America to win an English title. Pip later went on to win Best of Breed and place second in the Hound group at the World Show in He was also the owner and breeder of many of Canada s top winning Whippets Can. & Am. Ch. Dondelayo Buccaneer, Can. & Am. Ch. Lorricbrook Spellbinder, and Can. & Am. Ch. Lorricbrook NV Us, to name just a few. As well, he was the breeder of top winning Greyhounds. In the early nineties, Can., Am. & Ber. Ch. Lorricbrook Sporting Chance was the top winning greyhound in Canada. In 1998, Can. & Am Ch. My Christmas Rider was purchased from Slovenia and became one of the top winning greyhounds in Canada with 39 Best in Shows. Another famous top winning Greyhound bred by Max Ch. Lorricbrook Sporting Chance, owned by Wendy Keller Weitzman, shown by Harold Butler also with 39 best In shows. Max was a CKC Life Member of 55 years having joined the Club in Judging since 1978, he had a busy schedule in Canada and the United States, and his judging experience abroad led him to adjudicate dogs around the world. He judged Whippets multiple times in England, including the prestigious Hound Show. He also judged at Skokloster in Sweden. In 2004 he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Professional Handlers Association of Canada in recognition of his many years of service and dedication to the sport of purebred dogs. In April 2006 he was invited to join a panel of judges to judge the Top Twenty Whippets in the United States at the American Whippet Club National Specialty in Boston. Max lived a full life and touched many as a friend, mentor and fellow judge; too many to name all. I remember how fond and kind he was to my kids, especially Jody who became a Whippet breeder with his encouragement. One of his best friends was Phyllis Laventhall Wolfish. Their friendship spanned many decades, and both are together now reminiscing about old times. Phyllis son Peter remembers Max as a second father and smiles every time he thinks about his robust laugh. Max was also very fond of the late Carol Hollands who handled many of his dogs. Also, Barbara Wilton-Clark of Shalfleet Kennels in England with whom he bred Greyhounds and Whippets and Peggy Newcome of Pennyworth Whippets in the States. He also co-bred with Jenny McCartney of McCartney Whippets who remembers him as a tough but fair mentor. His best advice to her was Breed the best to the best and hope for the best, but it s not like baking a cake... you never know what you will get. Max touched so many of us... too many to name them all. Max Magder. Respected gentleman legend, zesty, robust, artsy, friend you will be missed and remembered by many. Rest in Peace my friend. DOES YOUR DOG EVER JUST GET TO BE A DOG? Recently I was eating breakfast with a colleague from work. Of course, as many of our conversations go, we began to chat about our dogs. Both of her dogs are mixed breeds and beautiful pets. Nonetheless, she has always expressed an interest in my tales of dog showing. I was telling her how Victor and I have been preparing for Obedience trials. I shared with her how proud I was the other morning when he mastered the hand signal for down. I proceeded to show her the video I had saved on my cell phone. She looked at me as she ate her boiled egg and said 2 APRIL 2019

4 NOTICE BOARD so does he ever just get to be a dog? I never even had to think before I answered. I chuckled and replied of course, he gets to be a dog, he is a dog. I guess for my friends and family not involved with dog conformation shows or dog sports, they may often listen and wonder if Victor gets to just relax and be a dog. It s a rationale that may make sense to the outsider listening to my stories on training. Whether it is the new class I am enrolled in or teaching conformation classes on Sunday afternoons, I have no doubt that it may be perceived that my dog trains every day for endless hours. But at the end of any day, my dog is first and foremost a dog. In fact, he is one of my most loyal companions, perhaps even my dearest friend. He is part of our family. When it comes to training I believe there are many misconceptions. Victor and I do not train for endless hours daily. Even if I didn t work outside the home, we wouldn t. The key to training in my opinion is creating a healthy relationship with your dog. It doesn t have to be hours. Short intervals of training can actually serve your dog well. Whether you are teaching how to give paw or learning how to stay in a sit position, no one including dogs wish to train for hours. If you and your dog are not having fun training, then you probably need to take a break. Hence I keep our training short, anywhere from one to three times daily for no more than 10 minutes per time. Sometimes opportunity arises when you least expect it. For example, the other morning I was getting dressed and somehow got myself tangled in my sweater. My right arm went up in what would be seen as the down command in obedience. Well lone behold Sir Victor did it for me for the first time. I offered him tons of praise with my voice. We never had a great deal of success in class with this hand signal, but every few days I would try. Well after the praise, we were off to the living room. He performed the command several times for me. To say I was pumped was an understatement. After that, we went for our morning trot around the block and I went off to work. He proceeded to retreat back to bed and snuggled in for his morning nap. Wise words of advice for anyone training would be to always remain positive, never get frustrated and when the timing is right, it will happen. Also it is completely acceptable that not everything goes perfect the first, the second or even the third time. Sometimes it just takes time. Victor is a dog, a pet, a conformation show dog, an obedience trial prospect, but most importantly he is family. He travels with us to the in-laws for New Year s Day Dinner, takes part in the Annual Downtown Christmas Parade, and even helps me deliver the Christmas Hampers for Animals in Need. He is my sidekick and my partner in crime. Sure, he is in the world of dog competitions, but that doesn t make him any less of a dog. He bounces outside in the snow with joy and in the summertime, and dives into the rivers like a Labrador retriever (did I mention he is a standard wire haired dachshund?). I can say with full confidence, Victor gets to be just a dog more time than he is a competitive dog. I am grateful for the competitions and training, as it has strengthened our bond. It has allowed him to become a more balanced dog and I to become a well-rounded owner. So if anyone ever asks you if your dog ever just gets to be a dog? Trust me, I am certain they do.
