1 Summer 2016 Page 1 HELOTES HUMANE SOCIETY A HOME FOR EVERY ONE Dear Members and Volunteers, Director s corner These past few months have been unlike any other in our history! To say we ve been busy might be an understatement. We finished the remodeling of our new Thrift Shop location and built outdoor kennels. We had a portable building moved in to serve as storage for the shop and a temporary office and clinic area. For weeks volunteers have literally been working around the clock to make the needed improvements. I must give a special word of thanks to Chris Bowers, our project manager, who took on much of the responsibility himself. Also to his wife Heidi Bowers, our Board President, who not only let Chris have many excused absences from home, but With the move we ve seen an increase in the amount of people stop- rolled up her own shirtsleeves and pitched in. I ve never seen a harder ping in for our assistance with strays, working FIXACAT@HHSANIMALS.ORG pair. It has been an costly undertaking so far. As with any remodeling project, unexpected expenses occur. But we felt it was the right time for us to move and the location is wonderful. We are now in the ETJ (extra territorial jurisdiction) of Helotes. animals for surrender and other animal related concerns. We are doing our best to cope with the influx. On a positive note we ve also seen an increase in visitors to our Second Chances Thrift Shop. We couldn t be happier about that! Not only does the shop help generate needed operational funds, but it also helps get the message out about our mission, to provide for the benevolent treatment of animals and to promote humane education. The move is over, but the work isn t. We have yet to move into the house that will become the Humane (Continued on page 2)

2 Summer 2016 Page 2 RIBBON CUTTING Celebrates HUGE achievement On Thursday, July 7th, the Helotes Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at our new location. Attending were Mayor Tom Schoolcraft along with other Chamber members and members of the District 7 Helotes Fire Department. District 7 s mascot Dottie, an HHS alumna, was a VIP at our ribbon cutting event. Director s corner (Continued from page 1) Society s office and clinic. That move will begin in the Fall. 4 Summer 2016 Page 4 IS DIEGO THE ONE FOR YOU? Ringo happy in his new home After nearly three years in a foster home, Ringo was finally adopted! Older dogs like Ringo tend to be harder to adopt. Please consider an adult pet the next time you want a family friend. Many are already housebroken and have manners unlike most puppies! Diego was found as a stray and picked up by Good Samaritans. He had what appeared to be a large wound in his side. It was determined to be a skin cancer lesion. It was successfully removed and Diego recovered at the Helotes Humane Society. He is now completely healed and ready for adoption. Diego likes to be the leader of the pack. He would do best as the only dog. He would make a great pet for a retired person or someone who is home all the time. If you are looking for an easy-going companion who just wants a quiet place to chill, Diego is your boy!
