The objectives of FASA shall be: To promote the pure-bred Australian Shepherd; to urge members, breeders and judges to accept the standard of the breed as approved by the Australian Shepherd Club of America, herein after referred to as ASCA, as the only standard of excellence by which the Australian Shepherd shall be judged; and to do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection. To promote and conduct breed activities, to conduct sanctioned dog shows, obedience trials and tracking test under the rules of ASCA and to encourage sportsmanlike conduct at all activities. To collect and distribute such information that may benefit the development of the breed. To maintain a lost and found section in the Aussie Fan, the official FASA newsletter. Lost and Found advertisements shall be free for Australian Shepherds registered with ASCA. To be an affiliate of ASCA.

Deadlines for submissions are as follows: January 5 (Jan-Feb) July 5 (July-August) March 5 (Mar-Apr) Sept. 5 (Sept-Oct) May 5 (May-Jun) Nov. 5 (Nov-Dec) Deadline for submission for the next issue of the FAN is May 5!! If possible, please submit all articles, advertisements, and Letters to the Editor in Microsoft Word, Works, or Publisher and pictures as JPG files if submitted electronically. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with mailed materials if you would like to have them returned. Cover ads are only available to FASA members and limited to two covers per person or kennel per year. Covers must be reserved and paid in full at the time the reservation is made, however the price also includes the inside cover. The editor reserves the right to refuse any material not in the best interests of FASA, its individual members or the Australian Shepherd breed. The editor will make every effort to work with authors and submissions to ensure that they conform to size and space limitations, however final editorial decisions regarding layout and text will be made by the editor. 6 Volume 3, Issue 2 President s Letter, March/April 2012 Page 6 Hello Everyone, I hope this letter finds you and your Aussies well. Where did winter go? It seems we are a month or a month and a half ahead of what the weather usually is at this time of the year. February 25 th & 26 th was our Tracking Test at Thunder Ranch in Anthony. A very big thank you goes out to hardworking Tracklayers and Cross-Track Layers Brenda Allison, Pieter and Karen Van Gunst, and Nancy Watson. We had 2 TDX entries and 3 TD entries. The lone qualifier was Darla Huffman who drove from Tennessee to enter her dog, Mister, at the TD level. It was an interesting weekend weather wise and by the time Darla ran her track (the last of the day) there was a cold steady rain coming down. Mister, a 10 month old Aussie, never faltered and with just a little casting at the third turn found the track to find his glove even when the track went down into a retention area. Everyone celebrated with Darla on her & Mister s accomplishment. I also can t thank our Judges Susan Boyd and Fran Smith enough. We were so fortunate to have such experienced, professional judges for our test. It was a very full weekend plotting the tracks on Saturday then running the test on Sunday. FASA s Stock Dog Trial is March 9 th, 10 th & 11 th in the new location at Penn Y Caerau Farm in Lady Lake, FL. We are close to filling the Trial in cattle and sheep and are taking day of show entries so we should have a good turnout. At this time it appears the weather will cooperate but will be a little warm. March 17 th & 18 th is an Obedience Trial indoors in Lakeland, FL at Dog Sense Obedience. Aimee Kincaid is the Trial Secretary. This is our first time using this facility so thanks to Ken & Aimee for putting this together. April 20 th, 21 st, & 22 nd will be Conformation, Obedience & Rally in Ocala at the Livestock Pavilion. We will be having our 2011 Year End Awards at that show so please make plans to attend. The premium should be up shortly on the website for this April show. Since it is getting warm so early I wanted to remind everyone to be aware of heat exhaustion for themselves and their dogs. I know someone who lost her Giant Schnauzer due to heat stroke when he had inadvertently been left outside for an hour or so and started running the fence line. It was a tragic accident. Also I am sure we are all aware of how quickly a hot car can become a death trap for both children and dogs. Along with the heat and humidity come mosquitoes, fleas and ticks. I understand from talking to a couple of our local exterminators that there is a tick epidemic in several Florida counties. They seem to have somewhat of an immunity to the usual topical treatments. This seems to be a more common problem as both fleas and ticks are becoming increasingly tolerant to the commonly used treatments to fight them. I usually do a weekly tactile exam of my dogs getting my fingers into their coat, looking in and around their ears, and in between their toes to feel for anything like a tick on their skin just to be on the safe side. Ticks totally gross me out. We have other shows being planned for the later part of the year so please check on the club website as the schedule and premiums will be updated as the shows are sanctioned. The ASCA Nationals is in Bakersfield, CA this year. If you go on the ASCA website to the section on National Specialties, you can find the logo. It is really cute, a take-off of the old Coppertone ad where a dog is pulling down a young girl s swimsuit. The logo is a beach scene with an Aussie puppy pulling down the swimsuit of a lamb. As I said, it is very cute. I look forward to seeing all of you at one of our upcoming shows.
