Talking Terriers President s Message: New England Terrier Club Inside this Issue President s Message Calendar of Events Winter Match Report Service Dog Article Submitted By Jan Silva Seminar Flyer Brags Play Pen Welcome to Spring!! The flowers are blooming and the sun is warm and it s time to get outside and play with our terriers. We certainly lucked out this winter, the winter that wasn t, but it s still wonderful to see the grass greening up and to hear the spring birds chirping. We have very good news! The AKC accepted our Winter Match report. This completes the necessary requirements for Obedience and Rally, but we will still need to hold one more A level match in Conformation and an A match in Earthdog. We are definitely closing in on it! The Winter Match was a great success. I was very nervous ahead of time that we would have very few entries when the AKC informed us that Obedience and Rally could only be open to terriers. But I was amazed at how many terriers showed up at the match and very successfully and impressively competed in Rally and Obedience, as well as in our Sweepstakes and Conformation. Our terriers can do it all!! My thanks to all who helped with this match. We are working on the Memorial Day Match plans and you should be receiving a flyer with more details soon. We also hope to hold another Earthdog Fun Day soon. Hope to see you all at our upcoming events! Enjoy your terriers!! Mary April 2012 Issue

Annual Winter Match - Our 1st AKC sanctioned A Match The New England Terrier Club Winter Match for 2012 was held at Silver City Canine Training Center in Taunton, MA on March 11, This was also our first AKC A level match for Conformation and our OA match for both obedience and Rally. The match was a great success! The weather continued to cooperate as it has for most of this past winter. No wheeling of crates past snow banks this time! We had 14 different Terrier breeds entered for a total of 25 dogs and 47 entries. This match was different from our usual program because, since it was an AKC A match we were limited to only opening entries to Terriers. That certainly was not a problem for Conformation and Sweepstakes since that is what we usually do. But also Obedience and Rally were only open to Terriers. We were very pleased with the entries in those competitions. Obedience and Rally were very ably judged by Robin Botelho. In Obedience we had 8 entries. In Utility B, the high score of 188 was earned by Mini Schnauzer #302, Silvermist Willard s Memory UD RE OA OAJ TDI AOU CD-C, owned and handled by Margaret Walcott. In Open B, the high score of 196 ½ was also earned by Margaret Walcott s Mini Schnauzer. In Novice A, the high score of 190, was won by Lakeland #306, Oliver Winston JCB, owned by Jose C. Benavidez and Philip J. Lemieux, and handled by Philip J. Lemieux. In Novice B, the high score of 191 was earned by Dandie Dinmont #301, Walter, owned by Sherry and Chris Bohman, and handled by Chris Bohman. The High Score in Match was won by Mini Schnauzer #302, Silvermist Willard s Memory UD RE OA OAJ TDI AOU CD-C, owned and handled by Margaret Walcott. In Rally there were 7 entries. In Advanced A, the high score of 99 was earned by Border Terrier #501, Peaceables Isabelle, owned and handled by Judith P. Watts. In Novice A, the high score of 88 was earned by Border Terrier #503, Kevrah Little Rascal Spanky, owned and handled by Lynne P. Ivaldi. In Novice B, the high score of 99 was earned by Dandie Dinmont #502, Walter, owned by Sherry and Chris Bohman, handled by Chris Bohman. The High Score in Match was won by Dandie Dinmont #502, Walter, owned by Sherry and Chris Bohman, handled by Chris Bohman. It was a pleasure to watch our terriers perform so well in Obedience and Rally!! Sweepstakes was judged by Brian Lowney. There were 5 dogs and 7 bitches entered. As always it was a delight to watch these young dogs cavorting around the ring. I heard many people commenting what a fine group of dogs and bitches were entered. Brian had his work cut out for him! Brian awarded Best in Sweepstakes to the 9-12 month dog #102, Parson Russell, Blackbriar Apotheosis, owned by Laurel Seison and Pat Wilcox. Brian Lowney also judged Junior Showmanship. There were four entries in Juniors. In Novice Senior, 1st place was awarded to #403 Ally Ridz, while in Open Senior, 1st place went to #404 Kasie Lopes. Best Junior was won by Kasie Lopes. Conformation was judged by Linda Sallee-Hill. There were 14 impressive entries representing 9 different breeds. Linda also had very tough decisions to make and did a wonderful job! Group 1 and Best in Match was won by #207 Australian Terrier, Match Point Red Roof Rocky, owned by David M. Ullman. Group 2 went to #202 Parson Russell, Blackbriar Apotheosis, owned by Laurel Seison and Pat Wilcox. Group 3 was won by #204 Norwich, Dreamweaver Boomerang, owned by Dorothy Marshall, and Group 4 went to #211 Cairn, Maverston Ruffles N Lace, owned by Marly Lucier. Congratulations to all our winners!

In the Line of Service: Searching for Stone When one is seeking that perfect new dog there are many points to consider such as type, structure and temperament. Then there are pedigrees to pour over, breeders to contact, & perhaps photos, or the actual puppies to examine. Can you handle another dog in your situation? Do you have the time, resources, and physical capabilities to handle the training? RCK Philosophers Stone Are you prepared for that tempest in a teapot? That is so typical of our beloved terriers? If you can answer YES to all These questions then in all likelihood you are ready for another dog and the search may begin. There is one more thing however that needs to be added to your search criteria and that would be function. What do you want to do with that animal in particular, show, performance events, pet or any combination thereof? What if you need that animal to learn to be responsible for your medical well being and your very life might depend on him? It is probably easier to choose the next Westminster KC Best In Show prospect than it is to find the right service dog prospect. After searching for nearly 3 yrs just such an animal arrived at Logan airport on 3/22/12 from LAX. He is a 7 mos. old Smooth Fox Terrier registered as RCK Philosopher s Stone and known simply as Stone. It will take nearly 2 years of constant training before we will know for sure that he has what it takes, but with only 2 weeks under his belt he is proving to be exceptionally gifted. Most people are familiar with the sight of a guide dog with its handler, and are familiar with dogs that assist the physically disabled, but not as many people are aware that dogs can also assist with medical or emotional disabilities. Seizure disorders, autism, PTSD, depression, hypertension, diabetes, and the list can go

on Ad infinitum, can all be mitigated by a trained service dog. In fact the legal definition of a service dog as defined the Americans with Disabilities Act, (ADA), is any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by a state or local government. Service animals perform some of the functions and tasks that the individual with a disability cannot perform for him or herself. A service dog is NOT a pet, (although they are usually loved and treated as such by their owners), they are considered durable medical equipment in the eyes of the law. There is often confusion between the functions/definitions of service animals, therapy animals, and emotional support animals. Simply put, a service dog,(sd), is trained to assist with the needs of its disabled owner, while a therapy dog, TD, provides assistance to others, i.e. hospital/nursing home visitations or remedial reading programs. An Emotional Support Animal, (ESA), provides comfort simply by its existence and interaction with its owner. Any dog can be an ESA, many dogs can be TDs, but only a very minimal number ever complete SD training. The failure rate for SD candidates is considered to be over 50% during the first year, 25% from those survivors in the second year, and 10% during the first year of working. These numbers are derived from dogs that have been specifically bred for service work though large programs. It makes it easier to understand why the value of a trained SD ranges from $25,000 to $50,000. It is believed that the failure rate is even higher amongst owner trained animals, (yes, the law provides for owner training), although there is no way to document this and no study has been done to provide actual numbers. The greatest reason for failure is the dogs inability to cope with the tremendous stress of public access. While terriers are rarely considered as SD candidates, if you can dial in to what makes them tick, the results far outweigh the frustrations. They usually excel as Therapy and ESA animals. The search for Stone was begun with the realization that my current SD, CH Glencoe s Don t Ask Why JE, SE, CGC, TD, was hitting middle age. Moose has been an extraordinary SD and has literally saved my life on more than one occasion. He continues to amaze everyone by teaching himself new tasks, and has been an incredible breed AND service dog ambassador. He uses his terrier tenacity to hone his work ethics. In typical terrier fashion the

world needs to run by his rules. I have been extremely fortunate that he considers my welfare to be his number 1 priority. To our knowledge, he is the only Smooth Fox Terrier SD in the country. When Moose was diagnosed with Lymphoma last November, the need to locate a successor to train took on a new urgency. The new puppy had to have a specific temperament, be tractable as well as trainable, physically sound and performance oriented. After much research, we finally decided on a line that was being bred in CA that is consistently bred and excels in its versatility. CH Glencoe's Don't Ask Why of Chesrite, JE SE CGC TD SD with Jan M. Silva. Moose. On the job during a chemo treatment. In view of the fact that it was not possible to go and evaluate the pup, a lengthy questioning ensued as to the pups personality as it appeared to the breeder. It was imperative to get an honest evaluation so trick questions were thrown in. For example, Is he silly or serious? To my delight she answered he is neither, but he is both. Exactly what I wanted to hear although, both, was not offered as an optional answer. It took several months of thinking on both sides and then logistical planning, but he has finally arrived. Stone will be shown to his championship and hopefully earthdog and rally title while he is learning to become a service dog. He is learning tasks already and doing light public access training. The bulk of his time however is being spent as a 7 mos. old Smooth Fox Terrorist. Moose & Stone out shopping

. COMFREY - is reported to be a cell proliferator & speeds in healing It is very easy to grow. Just plant in a well watered spot in the sun. It has large fuzzy leaves. It is a large plant. You can pick those leaves directly & reportedly wrap on a sprain, cut or wound. I like to make tinctures out of the root, which I then make into oils & lotions. The Root is very useful when made into a cream by mixing /warming olive & coconut oils together, then add some of the tincture. Keep mixing as it likes to separate. Only warm to a melting point. Cool then store in a glass jar. It heals bites, burns, rashes and any kind of skin irritation better than any prescription cremes I have used over the years. TINCTURE: This is a preparation made by soaking an herb in alcohol until the benefits of the plant ingredients are absorbed. How to make a TINCTURE? You will need a clean glass jar with a lid. Pint size canning jar work fine. A cup of chopped fresh herbs from your garden or ¼ cup of dried herbs & 1 pint of vodka proof, do not use 100 proof. Place herb material in jar & fill with vodka. Close lid tightly, label the jar with date, then store in a dark, dry and cool place. Every 2 days, shake the jar vigorously. After 4 6 weeks, strain the mixture through a screen or colander, catching the liquid in a bowl, then take the herbs & wrap in a piece of cheesecloth & squeeze as much liquid as possible. The strained liquid is your finished tincture. Everyone recommends that this be stored in amber glass bottles (4 ounce size). Be sure to label bottle correctly!!! We are looking for those TRICK OF THE KENNEL TRADES Discovered some medicinal Herbs to consider. Found this old deworming remedy Just tried it! 1 teaspoon of powdered rosemary; 1 teaspoon of wormwood ½ teaspoon of fresh ground garlic; MIX well & divide into 4 portions. Mixed in with food 4 times a day for 3 days. Dog was down on weight abit and is now picked up and coat has improved Tinctures made from 25% alcohol (80 proof vodka is 40%) can be stored indefinitely. So what are you doing, at this time, to cut costs in the kennel?

Meet one of N E T C Juniors - Kasie Jo Lopes And her dog AKC / UKC Ch. Posey Canyon Princesattitude, CGC, S.E. Six years ago my mother agreed that I needed a Juniors dog that was small enough for me to handle, yet had a great temperament with kids, while I learned. We were introduced to Carleen Farrington, to see if she had such a dog, in her kennel. She did. I got the best gift ever, my dog Atti and a mentor. Atti is a tan and white Parson Russell Terrier who has made her way into my family's heart. Throughout the years we have accomplished a variety of things, most importantly becoming extremely close, she is my best friend. Atti and I have competed in American Kennel Club & United Kennel Club events, since the day I was given her. One of my most embarrassing times, that comes to mind was at the FIRST (1 st ) Meet the breeds that AKC held in New York. We represented the Parson s in the Earthdog demonstration. I got to see her actually work in the clear tunnel. But in all of the noise, I could not get my dog to return to me, as she wanted that smelly- stuffed rat, so badly. As she tried to pass me, I grabbed her by the tail as the Terrierman do, must to the shock of spectators. Much thanks that day goes to Jo Ann Frier-Murza for her expertise in the explanation of that is how that were handled coming out of the earth. We have been invited to the UKC's Premier multiple times, and have placed 6th, 9th, 4th in the country, and due to changes, an Honorable Mention. We were again invited to Premier this year for the sixth year in a row! Atti has also received her Canine Good Citizen, Junior and Senior Earthdog title, and her United Kennel Club championship. Atti recently turned eleven years old, and is still going strong! I plan on finishing the three years I have left in Junior Showmanship with her and we will also continue to compete in Earthdog, and maybe try rally. I cannot thank Carleen enough for giving me my best friend, and cannot wait to see what the future holds for Atti and me.

How to Make a Natural Bug Repellent Spray Submitted by Carleen Farrington My Natural Bug Repellent Spray contains a variety of essential oils and plant-based extracts that truly work to keep insects, bugs, and flies away. The key when using essential oils in bug repellent is to choose a combination that repels insects and then mix it with a carrier (i.e. witch hazel, alcohol, or oil). Excellent insect repellent essential oils include: citronella rose geranium clove lemongrass lemon eucalyptus catnip castor oil peppermint lavender Cedar Creating this handmade bug repellent spray required a bit of math. I wanted enough essential oils in the spray for it to really deliver a punch. Combining 1 part essential oils with 10 parts carrier making the essential oils 10% of the final product In the end, this powerful DEET-free all natural spray contains a base combination of witch hazel and grape seed oil which translates into a lovely refreshing spray that heals the skin. Perfect protection for the hot months of summer! The Recipe -1 ounce witch hazel -1 ounce grape seed oil -35 drops citronella essential oils -20 drops eucalyptus essential oils -15 drops lemon essential oils -15 drops lemongrass essential oils -15 drops cedar essential oils Method Combine all ingredients in a small bowl or directly into a small spray bottle. Shake well before use. Reapply often, up to every 1-2 hours as need. Notes- Not all natural repellents are created equal and what works for one person may not work for all. -Instead of grape seed oil, feel free to use the oil you have on hand olive, jojoba, almond, etc. -I love the quality, and the price, of essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs Locally, there is 7 Arrows Farm on Oak Hill Road in Rehoboth.
