3 Letter from the President The busy season for our club is quickly approaching! In April, our club is hosting our second annual all-breed show and obedience trials. There are several events that are going to be offered that weekend: four conformation shows, four obedience trials, Total Dog, CGC testing, Triple Crown competition, mixed breed dog show, fun rally trial, raffle, silent auction, and much more! These shows are April 9 th and 10 th in Valparaiso, Indiana. Our club is also starting to plan for our annual White Shepherd specialty show at the UKC Premier this year! Our specialty show is Thursday, June 16 th and I know that everyone is looking forward to this event again this year. The Premier has been moved back to Kalamazoo, Michigan and the dates for the weekend are June 16th-19 th. Our annual barbeque and club meeting will also be held during this weekend. The United White Shepherd Club is also turning twelve years old this April. On April 14, 1999 our breed was accepted as a separate breed within UKC. As a result, this great club evolved and has been going strong for twelve years now! Best of luck and safe travels to everyone as we start another show season!! Miranda Page 3

4 Letter from the Editor I hope you enjoy our first addition, from the new newsletter team, for the UWSC newsletter. We certainly had big shoes to fill after the wonderful job Scarlett did all those years. We hope you like it. With the new guidelines in place for the newsletter after the club vote, we are really looking forward to this becoming a member's Newsletter. Remember Brags will no longer be taken from any where other than being submitted to the newsletter staff personally. So make sure to get yours in, as well as birthdays and other things you want to submit. This edition was done by one of our Staff - Tara Tippit. A BIG thank you to Tara for stepping up and doing such a wonderful job!!! I encourage each member to send in a tidbit about themselves and their families - dogs and humans. This Newsletter is a way for us to stay connected and learn about each other, even though some of us will probably never meet in person. I will start you out - My name is Arleen Ravanelli and I own Shylo Star Kennels. I live in Northern (Freezing) Wisconsin and have 4 white shepherds and a lab, previously owned by my father who passed. I have one daughter - Jerri, a son in law - Jeff, and two of the most amazing Grand kids on this earth - Zoie and Landen. You can check us out at: I hope to learn about each of you in upcoming issues :-) Arleen Ravanelli Page 4

10 What a day we had. We celebrated Spirit's 14th Birthday on December 31, It started with what I thought was a very nice breakfast for Spirit and his brothers. Everyone was happy about it except Spirit, who was nosing it with suspicion. He is not fond of cheese and is always on the lookout for it in case I sneak some in. The main part of dog meals at our place are comprised of kibble, which is a wonderful food and is probably all that they really need. The things I add to their kibble are mainly done because I just love to spoil them and they love being spoiled. I had scrambled several eggs with some chicken broth and scraps. I mixed them with the kibble. Breakfast is not Spirit's favorite meal, especially since he has aged. I guess he just has not done enough to make him hungry yet. He is a good eater at dinner time, but sometimes a little picky in the morning, and as I mentioned, cheese is not his favorite thing. Everyone had finished their breakfast but Spirit. He likes to wait until everyone else is done - that way they can watch him with envy while he eats his meal. He loves that. I peeked around the corner to see if he was enjoying his meal and I discovered him poking around in his dish. I believe he thought the egg was cheese. It made him grumpy. He picked up a piece of egg, very gingerly, between his front teeth, with his lips pulled back, "no cheese shall touch these lips". He threw it on the floor, next to his dish, with disgust! Well, I guess he inadvertently tasted it a little as he did this and he realized it was not cheese. He checked to make sure I was not looking and he tasted it. Well, that was pretty good! He picked it up and put it back in his dish. He proceeded to eat the rest of his breakfast. I made sure he did not see me watching. Page 10

11 I sometimes use string cheese sticks for training. Spirit won't touch them if they are cold. If I put one in the microwave for about 8 or 9 seconds, he likes them. Just to give him a bad time sometimes I offer him a piece, cold. He snubs it indignantly - won't touch it. He immediately glances up at the microwave and he will stand or sit and wait until I heat it - then he will eat some. I told Spirit that for the whole day he could do what he wanted. He seemed to understand and I know he agreed that he deserved that. I had a doctor appointment though and we had to work around it. He wanted to go, and I ended up taking everyone, as I usually do unless it is too hot to leave them in the car. They are so good, even baby Journey just naps and behaves himself. The worst he has ever done is play in the water dishes a little - but that was quite a while ago. I can actually leave groceries in the back, with them and no one messes with them. I am sure that the older dogs guard them for me. It amazes me to be able to trust them with packages of meat, or what ever, while I sometimes need to go into the post office or some other stop, on the way home. I simply point at it and say "that is mommy's" - it might as well have a cage around it. Nothing has ever been taken or disturbed. Our festivities began as evening approached. We had tiny meatball Hors d'oeuvres. They went pretty fast. Without cocktaiils and party chat, I have found that this part of our parties does not last long. So we moved along to the presents. Everyone was excited about this part. Even little Journey was excited. His only experience with it was from Christmas morning. Spirit gets the first gift, then everyone else gets one too. We had several gifts for everyone. Everybody wanted what each other got. I mostly just direct a little to be certain that no one takes Spirit's special favorites. He just loves his spiky ball. He got a yellow one this time! No one is allowed to take that but I pretty much let them work out the rest. Journey got a small (puppy size) Jolly ball and unfortunately Pirate decided he liked it better than his larger one. We had some issues over that. Pirate keeps taking the smaller ball and Journey lets him because he feels that Pirate can do no wrong. When I say "you give that back to Journey", Pirate immediately takes it to him and throws it at him. Then he will let Journey play with it for maybe 30 seconds or so, before he takes it again. I am actually thinking of getting another small one so Journey can have a chance at it and maybe I can maintain a little more composure. Pirate is so full of energy and so happy with "his" puppy! I am glad he is enjoying everything but he is exhausting. Part of the problem is that it has been pretty cold here. Sometimes in the teens and though it does not bother the dogs, I have been inside more than usual. More exercise is needed! Pirate has always been my angel dog: the easiest dog I have ever trained and the most conscientious. He has always tried to be perfect and usually managed it. No more! My sweet angel of a dog is turning into a maniac and the older guys want something done about it. Quest spends a good part of the day yelling at Pirate. That is a little disturbing since Quest is also the loudest. He is right though and I do need to start giving Pirate's bahavior some special attention. I have been having some serious discussions with Pirate and he really listens for a moment or two. Sadly I undermine my own training by sometime laughing at him because he is SO FUNNY! Yesterday I scolded him for pestering Spirit too much. He started backing out of the room, full speed. He looked like a roping horse backing up after the calf had been roped. Then, talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, well he backed into Journey in the hallway and sat on him. Try not to laugh at that scene. Impossible! Page 11

12 Our evening ended with a massage for Spirit. Our good friend Marlene has always given Spirit what she calls "hospital massages". She works at a hospital and Spirit was impressed at her skills from the very first time she worked on him. He rolls his eyes and pretty much just swoons when she does this. She has always called him Papa Bear and he thinks she is just the greatest. Well Spirit is never one to turn down a massage, even though I do not have the special skills that Marlene does. I did the best I could and I think he appreciated my effort even if I was not really qualified to do the real "hospital massage". I asked him how it was and he gave me a stingy little kiss. I asked him if that was it? "Is that all I get?" He gave a little yip and one more teasing kiss - a little better than the last. So I know he liked it even if I didn't do it as well. Quest is our acting angel dog lately. What an amazing dog he is turning out to be. He is seamlessly taking over many of Spirit's duties, without stepping on toes and with gentle firmness. It is a beautiful thing to watch and the way he handles it eases the pain of watching Spirit's decline. I am not sure exactly when Spirit began looking at him as his right hand man. It is obvious now that he looks to Quest to just handle many things. I guess he was grooming him all along for this. Sometimes I see Spirit raise his head to look at Quest when something needs attending. Quest just reads him and automatically gets up and handles it. Other times I notice Quest will just go lay next to Spirit for a nap, or to watch the young guys play. It brings tears to my eyes to see how gentle and loving he is to Spirit and to watch the special moments they share. I could go on and on about all the wonders of these magnificent animals we call our pets. However, those who have been lucky enough to share our lives with them already know, and those who don't know would probably never be able to imagine. Happy Birthday great Spirit, and Happy New Year. If I have my way every remaining day of your life will be spent doing what you want to do. I promise to try to resist the urge to sneak cheese into your breakfast, even if it is so much fun watching you pitch it out. Page 12

19 FAITH a story of a dog who has stolen my heart First Week Discoveries I read a book once how the Ossetes, one of the mountain tribe of the Northern Caucasus in Southern Russia, conditioned their Arabian horses to get attached to one master for life. They had a method of tying a horse alone in the woods. After waiting for it to get lonely and hungry they imitated voices of wolves, louder and louder, creating the impression of a wolf pack closing in on the helpless horse. In the moment when the horse s heart got nearly broken with anguish and fear its owner would appeared at last to its rescue. He would talk to his horse, gently calming it while stroked its neck that was covered with chunks of foamy sweat, untied it and walked it to a shelter with food and water. The Ossetes believed that this method created an unbroken trust and lifelong bond between a horse and its master. They said that there was nothing that horse would not do for its savior - it would faithfully stay by its master s side in the midst of a fierce battle even if its master got injured, or killed. Stealing such a horse was nearly impossible, as it would always seek a way to return to its owner. Perhaps at that moment an unbroken bound that the ancient Ossetes were setting in their horses by cruel methods was naturally brought about in my puppy by the unfortunate event of her getting lost and the fortunate one of her being found. Whatever triggered that bound it was obvious - my new puppy would not leave my side from day one. I did not need a leash for her to follow me, or stay by my side a bonding technique that is suggested by the Monks of New Skete in their bestselling book on how to raise puppies. It was as if my puppy had an invisible cord connecting her to me. She became my inseparable companion. When I was working on the computer, I would type with one hand while holding a toy and playing with her with the other. When I was watching TV she rested on my laps, curled up enjoying a cuddle time. When I was eating, or reading she had to rest at least one part of her body on my feet as if she was securing my presence in her dreams. A new puppy is like an unexplored island. It is one of the most delightful experiences to discover its traits. The best way for me to do this is to walk with my pup and observe her reaction to the world around her. We walked a lot, four-five times a day. As cruel and dishonest as that method was I often wonder if it was based on the animals true ability to respond with generous gratefulness to people s kindness. When I think about my puppy s long journey home her being alone in a crate for sixteen hours with unfamiliar sounds around her, people she did not know, objects and unfamiliar smells - I wonder if this simulated an environment similar to the one that the Ossetes were using to break their horses. I wonder if at the moment I opened the crate and snuggled my pup inside my coat she decided that I was her hero and savior. Page 19

20 Faith a story of a dog who has stolen my heart (continue) I had in mind many things that would be fun for her to explore. Or at least I thought it would. From the start I was surprised at what a different puppy she was from any other pups I have ever raised in the past. I soon discovered that my puppy didn t want to explore anything outside five feet perimeter from me. She focused primarily on my feet, hands and my face. It seemed like her main goal in life was not to loose me from her sight. It appeared that my new puppy had a natural ability to correctly prioritize the world she saw - her people were always first, and everything else was of a secondary importance. This was new. I never had a puppy before that I needed to encourage not to stare at me all the time and go away from me. I started using games that made it fun to go away and explore things. We played check it out, get it and find it games. Find it became her favorite. My puppy loved treats and toys so I used them. I was hiding a toy and treats in tree holes and cracks in the bark low enough for her to reach them. She had to sit and wait for me to say: find it and our game would begin. She would get so focused on her little search and went as far from me as she had to find the goodies. When she became proficient at this I complicated the task making her go even further and while she was searching I would hide behind a tree. The first time I did it she really panicked, helplessly running on circles, but in a few minutes she remembered that she has one of the most powerful searching tools in the world her nose - and started sniffing the air and the ground. Soon enough I was tracked down and greeted with exuberant excitement. Hide and seek is still our favorite game, but I feel like I am in constant disadvantage as I never have enough time to hide well enough she keeps an eye on me at all times. After a week of having my puppy I felt like a person who dug up a treasure. This little fluffy skinny white puppy with dark thoughtful eyes contained all I could dream of in my dog s personality. I even got a bonus great sense of humor and goofiness. And her endearing exuberance and joyful energy whenever I interacted with her was simply contagious. I never felt like I was training this puppy. It was as if she had some kind of magical genetic code written inside of her that programmed her learning so quick that it seemed she knew everything I was teaching her from the start and just needed to be reminded of it. She is remarkable! I said to my husband by the end of the week. I don t think I ever had a pup as gifted as this one. Doug who had only cats most of his life was skeptical: Really? She bites me. That s normal for any puppy I said, You have to teach her that hands are not toys. And he did. I must say that my husband has never trained a dog in his life and his training technique was rather untraditional. Who would think that laying on his back on the floor and allowing our puppy to jump all over him, biting his ears, beard, nose and whatever else was bitable could aid in any bite reduction. Occasionally when she bit too hard he would grab her, turn her upside down on her back, and while holding and tickling her belly he would say - no bites! These training sessions looked more like carnival excitement lots of laugh, screaming and barking. If I were a puppy I would never stop. I did not expect any results from this method, but it was fun to watch and be a part of it. Strangely enough our puppy has learned in her own way exactly what Doug was teaching her biting could be used to express feelings if it is gentle. To this day she mouths our hands with a gentle touch and this has become one of her expressions of love and affection. (continue in the next issue) - Lena Ralston Page 20
