West Highland White Terrier Club of Puget Sound Summer 2012 Issue PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Jeannette Melchior It s summer already and as usual Mother Nature is ignoring the NW but she was kind enough to allow us a sunny afternoon for the Annual Westie Fun Daze and now that July is here (one of my favorite months) July 4 th our National Independence Day, picnics, family outings, parades a true source of pride along with all day fireworks which can be an alarming and traumatic experience for many of our pets so make sure gates, pet areas and homes are secure. I personally don t like collars on my Westies but I do put them on with an ID tag and all 3 have been chipped but the safest place always is home. I ve heard from friends who have told me it s always like a war zone in their neighborhood so we leave, hummm lucky them. The last week end of July is the Scottish Highland Games in Enumclaw, the Westie Club will again be part of the Celtic Kennels, we are one of the oldest invitational clubs represented at this event so if it s your first time or you re an old timer and wish to participate be sure and contact Julie Redd, her address is juliesangels@hotmail.com or give her a call at This year s Specialty will be quite exciting and nostalgic this will be our 30 th Anniversary and we are looking forward to a great day of activity and the evening dinner. We are still organizing this event and will put out a Special Newsletter to the membership for this occasion. Again this year we need your help with donations for raffles and auction items at this event the donation does not need to be dog related. Contact Karin Parish kparish@whidbey.com Announcement: On the Officer s Page I would like to introduce our new Director Charlotte Bertsch, she ll be replacing Ella Selfridge-Neumann. Ella is giving up her Director duties but will remain the club s Westie Foundation Liaison. I certainly was hoping to hear from more of you with your concerns or contributions to the Newsletter have something of interest that could either help a Westie owner or give us a good laugh contact WHWTCOPS Newsletter Editor Kathy Reed at kreedj@comcast.net.

ADVENTURES IN ACCUPUNCTURE AKA PINCUSHION TED by K. Parish Donna and Ted have been going for a couple of months and I am learning a lot of things about natural ingredients, and acupuncture, and a new thing called NAET. NAET is a holistic clearing of allergies. Our holistic vet Donna Kelleher is the only one in WA that does this way of handling allergies. You can read up on it on google. She has had two books published. I was very apprehensive at first, but Ted Page 3 Summer 2012 Working in rescue as much as we do, we see an inordinate amount of allergies. I have been battling allergies with Ted for four years. Ted was the rescue that never was able to adopt out due to temperament problems, and he became a permanent fixture. Ted s demons have been exorcised! I have tried everything under the sun to control Ted s allergies. We have done raw diet, Chinese herbs, no grain, allergy shots, Plechner syndrome, limited ingredients you name it. So I heard about a holistic vet and actually wound up taking my Scottie for a back adjustment. I mentioned Ted, and she said bring him in. So we did good with the acupuncture. NAET works on the body on three levels: organs, energy of your body and emotional level. I know the more agitated Ted is, the more his allergies flourish. You can read about NAET here naet.html Donna has also written for The Bark and other journals. Her husband is a traditional veterinarian but he does do acupuncture. My article is basically on experience with this technique. Donna s website is and she is on facebook as well. She donated one of her autographed books for the silent auction at the Specialty. So here is Ted getting his acupuncture. I learned so much about herbs, and dandelions which cool the liver and detox them. It s ironic ted likes eating dandelions! I ve adjusted his vitamins and minerals and grind up greens to help him. He is on tinctures that clear up the scabs and all I can tell you if I hadn t seen it, I wouldn t believe it. We are still in the throes of battling grasses. The upside of this is you aren t pumping your dog full of antibiotics, and steroids that just make their immune system even weaker. We are still in the throes of battling weeds, but we have overcome other allergies. I have learned so

WESTIE WEEKEND AT EARTHDOG A SWEEP! We had a rip-roaring Hathor Farms on Whidbey Island during the Earthdog competition that happened on May 19/20. People who adopted, people who just wanted to do a sport with their Westie and people doing K9 nosework with their Westies, and us diehards all showed up. It was a white wonderland. Lexi received her Senior Title, and moved up to Masters and did a hunt. Ted received his Senior Title, Moved up to Masters and had two Q s out of three. (must pass 4 to get a master title), Bosco passed leg on Senior and the weekend before Sandy Campbell s dogs (she brought six) had multiple passes and a title. The newbee s just did intro to quarry but it was a new experience and of course I was running back to the car getting WHWTCOPS business cards to hand out and inviting everyone to our picnic. We met Phil and Michele who have two dogs (Theodora & Tug) from Chris Larsen s Kennel (White Diamond Terriers), we met Karen and Dave who have Riley, and Pattie/Dick came with their rescue Zoe. It was a lovely time, we all cheered each other on. None of us old ladies broke our hips. Shawnie was in a walking cast, so I was Lexi s Trainer, and she got a her title with my expertise, (along with crossed fingers, prayers and pleading). All the dogs had a blast, and we also received a lot of RIBBONS WOO HOOO Karen and Michelle Bosco and Karin Leg in Sr Dick and rescue Zoe Page 4 Summer 2011

Why we Need Trophy Money By Sandy Davis All the Club members received a letter requesting Donations for Trophies for the West Highland White Terrier Club of Puget Sound along with requests for donations for an Auction, dinner reservations, etc. Many of you who are not regular exhibitors at dog shows may have wondered why the WHWTC of PS is sending you this request and how we use the money raised. Best In Show Each year our club is approved by the American Kennel Club to hold a Specialty Show [a show just for our breed]. This Specialty Show is a showcase for our members to see the Best Westies in our area, and to compete in conformation and/or performance events. It is an opportunity for you to meet and talk to other members you may not frequently see, to look for new Westie items at our Club Auction, to see other Terrier Breeds, and to shop for dog supplies and decorative items from Dog Dedicated Vendors, items not typically seen in pet shops locally, to dine with Westie friends and talk about your, or their Westies. There are expenses incurred to hold a Specialty Show that you may not be aware of; expenses for the Show Site, the Show Superintendent, for Parking, for Judges, for a Club Dinner and costs for Trophies to be awarded. To meet these costs, we ask for donations from our membership as the entry fees for the Specialty do not cover all the expenses. In spite of our best efforts to curtail costs, we do not have control over all of them. As a result we ask our members to donate to help meet these expenses. When you donate funds, your help is acknowledged on a page in the Show Catalog. Your donation makes it possible for your club to continue to host our Specialty and other events. Without your help we will not be able to function as a Club. Page 7 Summer 2012

WESTIE FUN DAZE By Jeannette Melchior Westie Fun Daze every year, even thou it s supposed to be summer - rain is the biggest concern and this year Mother Nature was threatening to ruin our day. The Fun Daze volunteers brushed aside the weatherman s prediction and went to work to have everything ready for the Westie s arrival. Paul Meshke and Mike Roberts started warming up the grills, Karin Parish checked the arrivals in and Sharon Newsom and Terry Reesing welcomed the arriving Westie s with a Fun Daze bandana. Carolyn Lee manned our Collectibles table and Charlotte Bertsch made sure that everyone got a chance to purchase tickets for the raffle items. The activity area suddenly was populated with chairs pop-ups and alive with Westies. Those darn clouds were still lurking overhead with a burst of showers that made all of us dash under cover BUT when noon arrived, lunch was ready and the sun came out to give us a grand afternoon of events. After a quick Club Meeting, Diana Harris with her team from the Seattle Agility Center gave us a demonstration of field Nose Work. A variety of breeds demonstrated here a young lady is working a Shiba Inu. Jack Laney with his Scottie, Maggie, was kind enough to bring his tunnel explain and demonstrate the beginning practices of Earth Dog. Notice how patient this Westie is, actually all she wants to know is where is the rat? Page 8 Summer 2012

Westie Fun Daze (cont d) The Ice Cream eating contest is one thing that any Westie can excel at and the winners are: 1 st place Carolyn Lee with Kayla, 2 nd place Name Unknown, 3 rd place Doug Kimball with Coconut. The Tail Chase always the highlight of the day and the winners are: 1 st place Kathy Reed with Molly, 2 nd place Hal Redd with Zesty, 3 rd place Name Unknown. Ed Hunt with Jeff Neumann & John Newsom made sure no one cheated on the heats run. This picture says it all! Westie Fun Daze there off - look at those Westies, oh look even the Norwich gave it a go what s even more exciting are the people at the other end waiting to catch them Page 9 Summer 2012

Book Review If you haven t read the James Herriot series of books, you should get started on them now. They are wonderful books that will make you laugh and cry and laugh again. All Creatures Great and Small Chapter 3 Herriot goes on farm calls with Farnon in this chapter. He is grateful to be doing real work, and feels that this is the best way to show Farnon that he is qualified for the position. Herriot has a draft horse lean on him for untold minutes, while he digs for an abscess in the animal s hoof. At their last call he gets kicked by a cow. But he has survived his first day. All Things Bright and Beautiful Chapter 10 Herriot writes about serving the Darrowby Fair as their veterinarian, in Chapter 10. He sees Helen there, with her other male friend. Herriot spends some time with Tristan, then is called to see to an injured heifer. He cannot clamp the blood vessel, and is forced to simply cover it over with gauze. Helen and her other beau are watching. Herriot next sees a dog who should not be showing, since it is exhibiting signs of distemper. He also has to measure ponies to make sure they are of correct height for their classes. He is interrupted to check the dog s temperature again by the dog s owner, and then he continues measuring ponies, and listening to arguments by owners whose ponies are not the correct size for their classes. He notices that Helen and her other boyfriend are watching him once more. All Things Wise and Wonderful is the third in a series of four books by James Herriot in which he describes his life as a country veterinarian in Yorkshire, England, the other volumes being All Creatures Great and Small (1972), All Things Bright and Beautiful (1974), and The Lord God Made Them All (1981). Herriot was past fifty before he wrote his first book, but his warmth and humor coupled with a lively and readable literary style immediately launched his works to the best-seller lists. 11 Through the Garden Gate It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a beautiful and favorite Westie. Fran Rardin s lovely Molly passed in May Dillon passed away June 27 th, 2012 from Bladder Cancer. Dillon came to me at 18 months of age in the fall of 2000, bred by John Wilson & Ann Bailey in Scotland. He quickly endeared himself to all who knew him with his big toothy grin and loving nature. He was shown and obtained an IAKCB Ch title and then his AKC Ch title. He sired 14 Champion offspring, his legacy lives on in Champion Grandkids and Great Grandkids. His sweet easy going temperament was passed onto his children along with great heads, and coats on his offspring. He was a faithful loving companion. We will miss his presence in our home.
