He ran under trees. He ran forwards and backwards. Running is fun! said Mr. Badger. 2 Running made Mr. Badger hungry. It made him very, very hungry. It s time for me to find some food and pig out! he said to his friends, Bird and Jackal. 3 Out of my way, Bird, he shouted as his friend flapped her wings and rose into the air. 4 Jackal was happy to hear the news. He did not like to hunt. He was afraid of the buzzing bees and scary snakes in the woods. But, Mr. Badger never felt afraid. He was known as the most fearless animal in all of the animal kingdom. Jackal followed Mr. Badger. 5 What delicious treats! Mr. Badger said as he climbed a tree. Angry bees buzzed all around him. He loved to eat the honey and the wax he found in beehives. 6 Jackal watched a bee sting his friend. Mr. Badger did not mind at all! He just kept eating. Nothing can stop my friend, the silly badger, shouted Jackal. Mr. Badger handed some of the sweet, sticky snack to Jackal. 7 When the hive was empty, Mr. Badger climbed down the trunk of the tree. Before he reached the ground, he spotted a cobra. It slithered slowly across the sand. What a delicious treat! Mr. Badger said as he chased it. 8 Mr. Badger reached out and grabbed the snake. The snake did not want to be caught. It bit Mr. Badger s paw. 9 Uh, oh! shouted Jackal. My friend is hurt! 10 Mr. Badger sat down. He closed his eyes. Jackal watched his friend, but he was not worried. Nothing can stop my friend, the silly badger, he said. 11 Suddenly, Mr. Badger jumped up. Time for dinner! he shouted. Let s go find something else for you and me to eat! 12 You re a silly badger, said Jackal. You re also a great friend.

Read the following passage and answer questions 3 through 4. Lotta s Treasure 1 Lotta's family lived on the sea. She was born on a sailboat in the Indian Ocean. She slept in a crib padded with lifejackets. As she grew, she spent her days in the salty air. She fished for hours, and watched other boats through her binoculars. Most days, the sun's bright rays sparkled on the waves. The family headed toward the deep blue water of the ocean. Some days, it rained, and the winds whistled through the flapping sails. That s when they headed in toward the shore. Life on the sea was wonderful. 2 Mother and Papa taught Lotta how to read the sea. They taught her how to navigate a boat using stars in the sky. They taught her about currents of the ocean water and landmarks of rocks and islands. They shared stories of imaginary sea creatures and pirates lost treasure chests filled with jewels and gold coins. 3 Once, Lotta and her parents piloted their boat to the rocky shores of Morocco. After docking, they rented bicycles. Mother's golden bangles shook and clattered as they rode on the bumpy roads. They saw beautiful, old buildings. Before leaving Morocco, Papa bought a Portuguese Water Dog. Mama said the dog loved swimming. Papa said the dog would help steer fish into his fishing nets. Lotta named him Santos. 4 At sea, Santos would jump into the water and look for schools of fish. He chased the fish toward the boat where Papa and Lotta waited with a net. Papa would fry the fish. Mama used a shucking knife to open shellfish. 5 One afternoon, Lotta s family sailed to a remote island near Morocco. It was the perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch. As they went ashore, Santos began barking and digging in the sand. He loved running and playing. Mama spread a blanket near the water s edge. Suddenly, Santos ran to the blanket and spit out a shiny, gold coin. Lotta turned the coin over in her hand. It was heavy and glinted in the bright sunlight. She asked, "Santos, where did you find this treasure?" Santos leaped playfully over to a piece of driftwood sticking out from the sand. Beside it was an old, wooden box with a hole on its lid.
6 Lotta called to her parents as she peeked in the hole. Lotta, her father began. Do you remember the stories I told you about the pirates lost treasure? Lotta s eyes grew wide and a smile crept across her face. 3 Read this sentence from paragraph 1. Some days, it rained, and the winds whistled through the flapping sails. 5 Read the following passage and answer questions 5 through 6. Cousins on the Farm 1 Kyle checked his watch as he sat on the steps of his front porch. There were no other houses in sight, and green fields stretched to the horizon in every direction. Black cows moved slowly through the fields as they munched on grass. It was a quiet day, but Kyle was excited. He was expecting his favorite cousins, Jason and Jeremy, to arrive any minute. 2 Jason and Jeremy were twin brothers. They lived with their parents in New York City. For the past three years, Kyle had spent a week each summer visiting his cousins in the big city. He loved to walk along the sidewalks and look at the giant buildings towering overhead. He never grew tired of the bright lights and loud noises. 3 Jason and Jeremy were now visiting Kyle s house for the first time, and Kyle was nervous. How would he ever entertain his cousins? After all, they lived in the biggest city in America. Meanwhile, Kyle lived on a cattle farm in the countryside. He worried that his cousins would quickly get bored. 4 At that moment, Kyle saw a car appear on the distant horizon. It kicked up a cloud of dust as it traveled along the flat, dirt road that led to Kyle s house. Kyle turned toward the house and called to his mother. Mom, they re almost here! His mother stepped out on the porch to join him. 5 A minute later, the car pulled up in front of the old house. Aunt Maggie climbed out from behind the wheel and waved excitedly to Kyle s mom. Kyle watched as the car s back doors opened and his cousins hopped out. He expected them to walk toward him and say hello. Instead, they ran in the opposite direction. They stopped by the fence at the edge of the yard. 6 Look at it! Jason exclaimed as he pointed at a cow. Jeremy was busy taking pictures. 7 Kyle was confused. You mean you ve never seen a cow before? he asked. 8 This is the first time. We've never been to a farm before, Jeremy answered. I had no idea how big they were! Kyle smiled to himself. He had spent his entire life on this farm and had grown accustomed to seeing cows every day. 9 The three boys spent the rest of the day playing in the pastures. They swam in the cool, refreshing water of the creek. When the sun began to set, Jason and Jeremy were amazed by the symphony of crickets that chirped to greet the evening. That night, they stared in amazement at the sky above them. They had never seen so many stars! 10 As Jason and Jeremy looked upward to watch the stars twinkling brightly, Kyle smiled to himself. His cousins had once showed him a brand new world, and he was happy to return the favor.

Read the following passage and answer questions 7 through 8. Backyard Wilderness 1 On the weekends, Judson liked to spend time in the forest. He liked staring up at the canopy of trees. He collected moss and identified animal tracks. He tasted the wild berries he knew were safe to eat. He wanted to learn wilderness skills. Most of all, he dreamed of becoming a real woodsman. He told his friends, "With enough training, I will be able to live a week, a whole month, or a year in the woods." 2 For his eighth birthday, Judson's father bought him a weatherproof nylon tent for camping. Judson set it up in the cool, shadowy area at the edge of the forest. When night fell, he made a campfire. He started it using dry grasses for tinder. Though he could see the lights of his home glowing through the trees, he pretended he was in the wilderness. He used the stars in the night sky to navigate as he walked through the woods. He kept his eyes on the North Star to find the path back to his campsite. 3 Each morning he foraged in the woods for breakfast. He picked cattails from the bank of the pond, peeled off their young leaves, and ate their stems. He gathered dandelion flowers to munch. They reminded him of mushrooms that were pan-fried with flour and seasoned with salt and pepper. He purified stream water by boiling it over the fire. As he worked, he imagined himself living in the woods and hunting for wild turkeys. He imagined himself in handsewn buckskin pants and coats. 4 Judson hoped to find a wild, untouched place someday. He thought about the pioneers from long ago who settled the land out west. They had explored an endless landscape and lived off the land. They were true woodsmen. 5 Sometimes Judson climbed the boughs of the tall trees behind his house. He looked out at the sky and imagined being in a far-off place surrounded by the wilderness. Sometimes, he didn t even notice the pitched roofs of the houses beyond his. The busy highway, a two-lane road, and the tall steeple of the church that were before him seemed to vanish. High in the tree, Judson could hear the wind rustling the tree leaves and the distant caw, caw of a crow. He knew that someday he would be a woodsman. Someday, there would be only wilderness beyond the tall trees. 7 The author describes a taste in each sentence EXCEPT Judson set it up in the cool, shadowy areas at the A edge of the forest. B He tasted the wild berries he knew were safe to eat. He picked cattails from the bank of the pond, peeled C off the young leaves, and ate the stems. They reminded him of mushrooms that were panfried with flour and seasoned with salt and D pepper.

Read the following passage and answer questions 9 through 10. Day at the Beach 1 Keisha could hardly contain her emotions. She and her family had left their home in the mountains before sunrise. It was now five hours later, and she knew that they must be close. Her little sister, Sheri, had somehow slept the entire trip, but Keisha was far too excited to sleep. Today, she would see the ocean for the first time in her life. 2 We re almost there! Keisha s father announced as he drove the van through the crowded streets. Sheri clapped and smiled at her big sister. They had never seen so many people! Some rode bicycles and others had rollerblades. Some wore bathing suits with towels wrapped around them. Keisha looked out every window of the van. She could not tell by watching the people which direction the ocean was, but she knew it must be near. She was glad that she had put on her bathing suit before she left the house that morning! 3 Should we check into the hotel or go see the beach first? her father asked. 4 We want to see the beach! Keisha and Sheri yelled at the same time. Their father laughed. He must have expected this response, because he was already parking the car on the side of the street. He held his daughters hands as they crossed the street and walked toward the beach. They climbed stairs that took them up and over the sand dunes, and 5 There it was! The ocean! Keisha was spellbound. The pictures she had seen did not prepare her for the ocean s beauty. The water, stretching to the horizon, sparkled beneath the yellow midday sun. Hundreds of people relaxed on the sand, while others played in the gently crashing waves. 6 Keisha looked at Sheri. I ll race you to the water, she said to her little sister. Before Sheri could answer, they were both sprinting toward the surf. They ran past umbrellas, sand castles, and people. Leaving her sister far behind, Keisha reached the water first. She continued running until the water got too deep, and then she dove in. 7 Keisha came up coughing with a distressed look on her face. Sheri and her father were standing at the edge of the water. What s wrong? her father cried out. 8 This water tastes terrible! Keisha said in astonished voice. Her father laughed as he and Sheri waded out to join Keisha. 9 That s because it s saltwater! he said. You re not supposed to drink it! He and Sheri laughed. Even though the salty water had caught her by surprise, Keisha would not let it dampen her spirits. She, too, began to laugh. 10 I guess the beach is full of surprises! she said, before diving back underwater.
