5 OUR JUDGES Dogs - David Cavill (Toveri) David Cavill trained as a teacher and taught for over 26 years and appointed Head of Departments and Head of Years in large comprehensive schools. He publishes the weekly publication Our Dogs and owned the magazine Dogs Monthly from 1992 until He has written three books about dogs with a fourth, Running Your Own Boarding Kennels now in its fourth revised edition. He founded the Animal Care College in 1980, devised Dog Directory and created the Eukanuba Rescue Dog of the Year Competition. He writes regularly for Our Dogs and runs the increasingly influential ijd web site ( With his wife, Angela, he was joint manager of Bell Mead, Batterse Dogs' Home's large Country Kennels at Old Windsor and Deputy to the Director General of the Home for eleven years so he has also been deeply involved in the world of stray and rescue dogs and cats. Prior to this position he was a director of a major boarding and quarantine kennel which incorporated a large pet store and from 1990 to 1996 was part owner of a small boarding kennels near Bristol. He first became involved with the world of dogs as a breeder of Finnish Spitz. He was a committee member of the Finnish Spitz Club and ran the Nordic Open show for several years in the 1970s. With Angela, who was herself Secretary and subsequently Chairman of the FS Club, he owns the 'Toveri' kennel name, one of the U.K.'s most successful breeding prefixes. He is show manager and Chairman of Southern Counties Canine Association, one of the U.K.'s major dog shows, served as Vice-chairman of The Kennel Club Breed Liaison Council for six years, was a member of The Kennel Club Working Party on shows development and judges training and is President of the British Rottweiler Association and Chairman of the Rottweiler Breed Council. He is a well-known judge officiating regularly in Britain and abroad. He is passed to award Challenge Certificates in Affenpinschers, Rottweilers, Border Collies, Belgian Shepherd Dogs, Samoyeds, Norwegian Buhunds, Schipperkes, Keeshonds, Japanese Spitz, German Spitz, Leonbergers, Akitas, Swedish Vallhunds, Shar Pei, Finnish Spitz, Siberian Huskies, Dobermanns, Lancashire Heelers, Tibetan Spaniels, Tibetan Terriers, Dalmatians and Basenjis across four UK groups and passed to judge the Utility, Working and Pastoral Groups as well as Best In Show at Championship Dog Shows. He is absolutely delighted to be judging Bearded Collies having been following the breed for over 30 years. He may hold the record for the longest time on an A3 list! Bitches - Anne Wilding (Bendale) My first Beardie, Ben, joined the family in His breeder asked if I wanted a show or pet Beardie and when I asked what the difference was I was told I thought I would get a better dog if I went for the show puppy and after all 5.00 wasn't much... I won't think of the thousands of pounds in entry fees, petrol etc, that extra 5.00 would eventually cost me! Obviously it was well worth it in return for all the friendships and great dogs I have been privileged to know over the last 40 years. I also joined the BCC that same year and in due course a schedule for the Club championship show came through the door. There weren't many Beardies around at that time and I had only ever seen a Beardie walking down the street, Ben, his litter mates and their dam, so a trip to the show would be a great opportunity to see more of these shaggy dogs. Now I had never attended a dog show before and had only taken Ben to obedience classes so you can imagine the fun we had in the ring. No, we didn't get placed and I thought that would be the last show I ever went to. Then his breeder suggested we went to an open show in aid of charity. Ben won and I was bitten by the show bug. The following year my second Beardie, Maggie, who became Ch Willowmead Summer Wine, joined us and in 1987 Lucy, Diotima Secret Love at Bendale joined the ranks. These two were the foundation bitches of the Bendale line and although I breed infrequently there have been twenty Bendale champions worldwide. I first awarded CC's in 1987 and have since had the pleasure of judging in Europe, Scandinavia, USA and Canada. A special memory was judging at Crufts in 2000 and winning BOB there with Ch Bendale Special Times JW. Best in Show Judge - Marian Appleby (Diotima) I've lived with long-haired dogs since I was 11 and discovered Beardies in Our first Beardie came from John and Betty Meyrick (Nigella) in 1973 and in 1974 we bought a bitch from Tine Bowen (Blumberg). Ch Blumberg Diotima Steel JW became the foundation bitch of Diotima Beardies. From Ella descend all Diotimas and we now have an unbroken line of seven generations of bitch Champions, with Ch Diotima's Heart of Gold being the latest. We bred Ch Diotima Sea Wolf at Ramsgrove, top Beardie 2004, and own Ch Brenriga Gift Wrapped for Diotima JW, top Beardie Am and UK Ch Diotima Always on My Mind became the sixth Beardie owned/bred by Diotima to win a CC at Crufts. I first judged in the 1970s, approved to award CCs in I have also judged in Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, Canada and the USA. I was Membership Secretary for the Southern Branch of the BCC, then SCBCC Membership Secretary for 11 years from its foundation and Secretary from

Exhibitors should note that such practice would constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition. 16. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor. 17. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do s and don ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events. When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams. If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all. The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink. Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog. When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry. 18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered. 19. No modifications will be made to the schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine press wherever possible. 20. No animal, other than an exhibit duly entered at the Show, will be allowed within the precincts of the Show during in continuance. 21.
