1 Woodson County News March, 2016 IMPORTANT REMINDERS There are several deadlines coming up in the next few weeks. Perhaps the most important is May 1, the last day to add or drop projects. Families can double check their projects online at Club leaders will also have lists at the April meetings. As you review your project list, please tell your club leader or Andrea your shirt size for Showmanship shirts. If you will continue the project, but not participate in the County Fair with a particular specie, please tell your leader or Andrea, as well. Livestock nominations for KJLS and the State Fair are due in May and June, depending on the specie. Market steer, heifer and horse ID s are due May 1 st. A chart is provided at the end of this newsletter with individual requirements, as well as a checklist. ALL animals will require a declaration form, nomination form, a DNA hair sample (except horses), and EID tag. WEIGH DAY All sheep, pigs, meat goats, and bucket calves will be weighed at the fairgrounds on Monday, April 25 th from 2:00pm until 8:00pm. Breeding gilts, breeding ewes, and breeding meat goats will also need to be weighed and tagged at the same time.. All male animals that are going to be shown in a market class must be castrated before they will be weighed and tagged for the 2016 Woodson County Fair. This rule will be enforced. WOODSON COUNTY SPRING BEEF, LAMB, AND GOAT SHOWS The Woodson County Spring Beef, Lamb, and Goat Shows have been scheduled for Saturday, April 30 th. Beef weigh in and breeding heifer check in is from 8:00 9:00am, and the show will start at 9:30. Sheep and goat weigh in and ewe check in will be from 11:00 1:00. The show will start shortly after participants arrive from the Coffey County show. Lambs will show first, at approximately 1:00, followed by the goats at 3:00. New for 2016 there will be a commercial doe class. Check our website for more information. There are no pre-entries. You will fill out an official entry form for each animal before you weigh or check them in. Showmanship cards (separate from entry forms) are turned in at the scales. Coffey County shows will be the same day. You will be able to show at both shows. DISCOVERY DAYS Are You Ready for Discovery Days? SUNNY HILLS (formerly Dirty Dozen) 4-H CAMP plus CAMPFERENCE Open to youth who have completed 3 rd through 7 th grades, Sunny Hills 4-H Camp will be held June 24 th 27 th at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Youth can plan on canoeing, exploring, fishing, disc golf, archer, crafts, campfires, and more! Camp experiences for young people can help a child develop in many ways. Often times, going to camp is the first time to be away from home without the familiarity of parents or other family members.

2 Campers have the opportunity to meet new friends, develop lifetime skills in recreation and learn how to cope away from home. Camp is $185 this ; registration and payment is due May 20 th. A $50 cancellation fee will be applied for all cancellations after housing has been set. Campference is for youth ages (before January 1, 2016), and will be held at the same time at Rock Springs. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the camp activities of Rock Springs. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full in 2014 and Campference is $270; registration and payment is due May 16. K-STATE OPEN HOUSE Come one, come all! You can extract DNA from a strawberry, take a turn in a racing simulator, or design your own t-shirt. There s something for everyone! See a complete schedule of events online: NEW RAFFLE POLICIES FOR FUNDRAISING Due to recent changes in 2015 Kansas law, it is now possible for nonprofit and education entities to conduct raffles. A raffle has three components: prize, consideration (ticket cost) and chance (luck). If a raffle is held, it must be conducted under the following conditions and policy. Raffles must be transparent and open, so there is no question that the raffle is above board. There also must be an equal chance for winning and equity for everyone who purchases a ticket. Policy/Procedure The Extension board must agree to support the conducting of raffles. The Extension board may opt in or out of conducting raffles at any time, by passing a motion noted in the official minutes. The group conducting the raffle must be an Extension unit-affiliated group, e.g., 4-H club or project group, Master Gardeners, etc. Any group that wishes to conduct a raffle must first submit an application (KSU 8-45a). All raffles must be approved by the Extension unit prior to conducting of the raffle. Since boards meet once a month, groups wishing to conduct a raffle must allow sufficient time for approval. 5 2016 UPDATES Kansas Livestock Nomination Process Declaration Form The verbiage of the Declaration Form has been updated. Families/Households need to read the form and obtain all of the necessary signatures. Only one form per family or household is required for each, as long as they mark all of the species in which it covers and each specie they nominate is covered accurately by the information submitted on the form. Nomination Received By Deadline The nomination deadlines for all species are postmark dates. However, all youth livestock nominations must be RECEIVED on campus within 15 days of the appropriate specie postmark deadline, regardless of postmark date. K-State will not be responsible for lost or misdirected mail. Certified mail is highly encouraged. Matching EID Tag Front & Back The front and back of all EID tags must match correctly for all species. Discrepancies will be considered an invalid tag. Please speak with your local Extension Office or Dave Kehler to ensure your animals are tagged correctly. Market Beef Nomination Deadline May 2 nd The market beef (steers & heifers) deadline is typically May 1. However, that is a Sunday in Therefore, nominations postmarked May 2 nd will be accepted. Swine Ear Notch Submission Requirement Returning in 2016, the ear notches for all swine nominated must be included on the swine nomination form. Therefore, a field has been added to accommodate submitting this information. There is also a diagram on the form. Families/Households need to draw the ear notches exactly as they appear in the pig s ear for each animal nominated. Leaving either of these fields blank will result in an incomplete nomination. Educational resources for reading notches may be found in the Rookie Guide, on the Youth Livestock Program website, or through the local Extension Office. DNA is still a swine nomination requirement as well. Sheep & Goat Scrapie Tag Information Requirement New in 2016, the scrapie tag number will be required for all sheep and meat goats nominated. A field has been added to both the market lamb/commercial ewe and meat goat/commercial doe form. If a nomination is received without the scrapie tag listed for each animal nominated, the nomination will be considered incomplete. For more information on scrapie or identifying the scrapie tag, please refer to the Rookie Guide, the Youth Livestock Program website, or the local Extension office. Youth PQA Plus Certification Date All swine exhibitors must submit a valid Youth PQA Plus certification number by th. Returned Check Fee All returned nomination checks will be assessed a $40 fee, in addition to the original amount. All animals nominated by the associated family/household will be considered incomplete and ineligible to show until appropriate payment is received.
