Animal Focus Presentation Guidelines Koala Part RELIABLE SOURCES!!! Your first source should be a general website that contains basic information (such as the AccessScience database available through the library (ASK the librarian if you need help locating these). What sources are used by these websites? How reliable is the information? For 1 of your sources YOU MUST use the periodicals database and the general catalog (also check the Ebooks) available in the library. The periodicals database will help you locate possible articles published about your animal in magazines such as Scientific American, National Geographic, National Wildlife, Natural History and other popular scientific literature. In other words, this source must NOT be from a website on the internet! You may also use other websites for your research (some of the zoos have some good information on their websites for example). Not having a minimum of 1 source from a periodical will result in a deduction in 6 points!! All sources should also be appropriately cited on the last slide of your presentation. You may use APA or MLA style to reference your materials. Presentations without proper citation will lose 10 points!! Provide a video/s of some aspect of the animals behavior/s Not having a video will result in the deduction of 20 pts (unless you notify me that there are no videos available) Part 2. Day of presentation. On your assigned day you will present a minute (Shorter than 10 or longer than 15 min. will result in a deduction of 10 points) oral presentation using PowerPoint on your animal. If you do not know how to use PowerPoint, please come to my office hours or make an appointment. Your presentation should address the following topics 1)Basics:

Name: scientific and any common names Description of animal use a picture, too Geographic distribution: Where is it found? Is there a map to show? Phylogeny: What family is it in and what other animals is it related to? (if you need help understanding what this means, please see me). How long do they live for out in the wild (live span)? 2)Social Structure Do the animals live a solitary life (by themselves mostly except for mating) or do they live in groups? What is a group of these animal called? Do the individuals of the group have a leader? Is there an alpha female or alpha male? Who is the boss of the group? Is the group a female led group (matriarchal) or are they led by a male (patriarchal)? 3)Resource acquisition/protection: What does the diet of this animal consist of? How does this animal solely hunt its prey or is the animal only a scavenger or do they do both hunt and scavenge? If they do both, which do they do more of, hunt or scavenge? How does the animal protect itself or young? What type of threat displays are used if they feel threatened? Do they have venom, or are they poisonous?

Do they use horns, antlers, claws, teeth or beaks? What behaviors (if any) do they use to distract a predator? (Do they fake an injury or lose a body part??) 4)Reproductive Behavior: Mating behavior: Who gets to mate? Can all individuals of the group have young or is it just the alpha male and female? Courtship behavior dances, songs, displays? What does the male do get her attention? Competition for mates ( intrasexual selection ) do males have to fight or females? How many mates do they have one, two or many? Mate for life or different each breeding season? Who takes care of the young mom only, dad only, both or no one? Time frame: what time of the year do they mate? How many young do they produce each breeding season? 5)Growth How long do they stay with the parent/s (mom, or dad) and the group? Time frame: How long to sexual maturity? 6)Survival: Any interesting/unique mechanisms (ways) for protection from predators or environment Include physiology if applicable can they do anything special if there is a long period of winter or a long period of time with no food or without water? 7)How have humans affected this animal?

Destruction of habitat, over hunting/fishing/poaching? What are we doing to help them, if anything? (Are we creating laws, building sanctuaries, using captive breeding programs, creating preserves with large tracts of land?) 8)Place in the ecosystem Where does it reside in the food web? (What does it eat and who eats it!) Any noteworthy interactions with humans? Provide at least 1 or 2 videos of some aspect of the animals behavior Not having a video will result in the deduction of 20 pts (unless you notify me that there are no videos available). Each part of the video that you are using to show as an example of a behavior can be no longer than 30 section. If there is a video scene that is longer and you want to show that video clip IT MUST BE APPROVED BY ME BY two days before you give your presentation. Any additional interesting or cool information about your animal of interest?????

NOTES: YOU MUST ALSO COVER KOALAS AND CHLAMYDIA(STD) IMPACT OF URBANIZATION ON ENVIRONMENT WITH REGARDS TO KOALA HABITAT HOW DO THEY AVOID GETTING HIT BY VEHICLES? (man made structures) Must cover note section as well!!!!
