1 Westside news Volume 6, Number 3 March 2015 Official Newsletter of the Westside at Buttercup Creek HOA DOGS AND LEASHES What would we do without man s best friend? They provide protection, companionship, entertainment and in some cases angst. We simply love our dogs. We love them so much we even take them with us to local shops, the parks, and even the daily walk around the neighborhood. However, Westside Preserve neighbors have expressed recent concern over dog owners allowing their furry friends to run around the neighborhood unattended or without a leash. You might be thinking My dog is calm, obedient, and can walk by my side without a leash. I ve never had an issue before. BUT THERE ARE MANY REASONS WE SHOULD LEASH OUR DOGS. 1. Automobile accidents. You may be on a walk and your dog is unleashed. Your dog sees a squirrel (or some other distraction) across the street. The dog may dart across the street before you have a chance to stop them. The risk vs reward is not worth it. As a dog owner I d be distraught if my dog were hit by a car. I d also hate to be driver, wishing it could have been avoided, knowing it could have been avoided. 2. Other Aggressive Dogs. Your dog may be friendly but that does not mean that all dogs are. If your dog is unleashed and approaches a leashed aggressive dog, that dog could bite your dog. Because your dog was unleashed, you may not be entitled to damages for your dog s medical expenses. 3. Finally, it s the law. The City of Cedar Park issued ordinance no. CO C1 and in Chapter 2 Article 2.01 (A) Any not on its Owner s property of the property of another person with such owner s consent which is: i. Not secured by means of a leash, chain or other restraint of sufficient strength to control the actions of such Dog: ii. Not fully contained within a cage, crate, kennel, or similar enclosure; or iii. Not fully confined to such property by a confinement fence of sufficient height and strength. This could result in a Class C misdemeanor Please don t be the neighbor that walks without a leash. By using a leash you are not just being a good neighbor, you are really showing how much you care about your dog. Simply put, leashes protect your dog and others around you. Fit and Fun: Health Tips for You & Your Children By: Concentra Urgent Care Getting fit and staying fit can be a fun process. That s true for individuals, and it s especially true for families.

The habits that we learn as children are often the habits we carry into adulthood.

Below are some ideas for getting off the couch and having some fun while getting fit: Take an active vacation: It s tempting every day to think of your vacation as a time to sit and relax.

Visit a local park: It doesn t have to take a whole day, but you could spend a few hours playing at a park. Take a ball (football or soccer), a Frisbee, or a hacky sack, and play.

Hold a block party: Call your neighbors, and block off the closest cul-de-sac for a get together that includes fun and active games.

Go for a hike: Find a local area where you and your family can go and hike for a few miles. Spend time outdoors, and enjoy what nature has to offer while you all get fit!

The Goal: Be instrumental in encouraging children to develop the good habit of moving through space, nurturing their physical power, and getting fit.

4 Implementing yoga into a workout routine can provide unique health benefits, said a Baylor College of Medicine physician and yoga enthusiast. Yoga is a broad philosophy containing many different paths to achieve the goal of physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing,said Dr. Bobby Kapur, assistant professor of medicine at BCM and associate chief for emergency medicine at the Harris County Hospital District's Ben Taub General Hospital. In physical fitness, yoga is the practice of physical postures and breathing exercises that allow a person to strengthen the body and at the same time enter a meditative and relaxed state of awareness. Yoga entails various positions, stretching and deep breathing. Practicing yoga can help a person improve flexibility, balance, limberness, blood circulation, and it can also relax muscle tension and fight infection, Kapur said. INDIAN MEAL MOTHS Indianmeal moths can be found in dogfood, birdseed, cereals, dried fruit, nuts, powdered milk and candy. Adults are small with grayish wings tipped in copper. Larvae are creamy yellow to yellow-green to pink and often crawl along pantry walls. Spun pupal cases are often found along corners and edges of wall areas. To eliminate a pantry pest problem, the first step is to locate and remove all infested items. Removing infested items is the easy part; finding the infestation is not always so simple. Begin with the oldest food items, usually in the back of the pantry. Inspect everything, including unopened food items since these can also be a source. If you find an infested item, do not stop your inspection, more than one item may be infested. Throw away infested items. If you don t feel that you can throw away food, place the infested food in a ziptop plastic bag and place it in the freezer for about 5-7 days or spread the infested food item on a baking sheet and bake at 250 degrees for 4-6 hours to kill any insects. Once all the insects are dead, you can sift the food item or pick out the insects. Of course, you can always just leave the insects in the food and get a little more protein with your meal! It is extremely important to find the source, and not all pantry pest infestations come from the pantry. Check rooms for items such as dried, decorative peppers, dried flowers, potpourri or rice heating packs.
