We accomplished a lot...with plenty of good food and great people! The Wichita Kennel Club has decided to start having programs first and our business meeting second. This change will take place at our monthly meetings. We will start the programs at 7:30 P.M. We plan to do this for six months and see how the membership feels about the change. The board will revisit it after six months and see if this change is something they want to continue. Mark your calendars now for the September barbecue and covered dish dinner! Nominating Committee Formed Members of the Nominating Committee for the 2013 WKC Board of Directors are: Chairperson: Milli Dold Members: Patty Behrns Joe Miller Alternate: Liz Cowman 2013 AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championship to Return to Nebraska's Branched Oak Field Trial Grounds September General Meeting Annual Picnic Monday September 10th 6:30 PM The 20th running of the AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championship will be held at the Branched Oak Field Trial Grounds near Lincoln, Nebraska. The multi-day event, beginning Saturday, March 16, 2013, will consist of two Championship stakes (retrieving and non-retrieving), plus, for the first time, a supporting Open Derby Stake. A portion of the event s proceeds will benefit the Nebraska Field Trial Association with its ongoing maintenance and improvements to the Branched Oaks grounds. We are pleased to work with the Nebraska Field Trial Association to bring the event back to Branched Oak for the fifth time, said Tom Maneely, the AKC Pointing Breed Field Representative assigned to work with the host organization. The dedication and experience of the Association members will ensure that the Championship is a quality event. The Championship stakes are open to all AKC-registered pointing breeds that have earned an AKC Field Championship or Amateur Field Championship title, or any dog that, during the period of one year prior to the closing date of the trial, has placed first, second or third in any AKC Gun Dog stake (Open or Amateur) with at least 8, 13 or 18 starters respectively. In honor of the 20th running of the Championship, a 30-minute single series Open Derby Stake will be held. There are no special qualifications for dogs entered in the Open Derby stake. The Non-Retrieving Championship will consist of a one-hour single series. The Retrieving Championship will again be a two series event. The first will be 30 minutes, retrieving on course. Dogs will be called back at the judge s discretion for the second series, which will consist of 45 minutes retrieving on course. Additional details, including the premium list, will be posted on akc.org as they become available

3 Page 3 of 6 NEWS FOR THE DOG FANCIER Wichita Kennel Club General Meeting Minutes July 9, 2012 President Treva Faires called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Minutes of the June General Membership meeting were accepted as published. Visitor: Deb Holderman--Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers Treasurer: Tom Chase presented two bills: $2.94 from Leanne Chase for newsletter expenses. $81.46 from Treva Faires for hospitality and supplies Tom Chase also reported that WKC expects two checks from Onofrio Dog Shows, LLC for refund on spring show deposits for bad checks and credit card declines on entries. Regional Junior Handler Competition: Liz Cowman told WKC members past winner, Kelli Denton will be using $5,500 of her scholarships this fall at TCU. Conformation Classes: Treva reported Thursday night ( ) would be the fourth in the present ongoing series of six. There may be one more summer series depending on demand, otherwise new classes won't start again until fall. Membership: Treva Faires explained to WKC members that the membership process begins when visitors come to two or three general membership meetings first. After that, they are given a membership application, if they wish to join. They must then fulfill their volunteer requirements and be voted on by the board and pass a home visit. They are then voted on by the general membership. Treva also reported that Lana Landers and Deb Holderman are prospective members. Treva also made a home visit to Butch Wilson which is a very nice dog home. New Business: Milli Dold received a letter from a tour group going to the World Dog Show in Budapest in She will post it on the WKC bulletin board Spring Show: Milli Dold has about 30% of the judges hired so far. Pat Deshler discussed legislative issues. AKC Delegate: Treva Faires will be traveling to the September Delegate's meeting in NYC. Meeting adjourned at 8:07 PM. Kim Jenning Recording Secretary

4 NEWS FOR THE DOG FANCIER Page 4 of 6 Wichita Kennel Club Board Meeting Minutes July 25, 2012 President Treva Faires called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. In Attendance: Treva Faires, Pat Deshler, Milli Dold, Bev Benjes, Tom Chase, Mike Williams, Arleen Berry, Kim Jenning, and Diane Kilts. WKC Board Meeting Minutes from June were accepted by the Board. Treasurer: Tom Chase handed out WKC Balance Sheets, Profit & Loss Statements, and Report of Cash Transactions. There were no bills. Art Show: Pat Deshler reported that two jurors have been hired for spring of Jay Nelson of the Nelson Gallery in Manhattan (NYC) and Linda Budge who was the Best in Show winner of the 2012 Art Show at the Dog Show will be jurors of the 2013 show. Midwest Regional Junior Handler Competition: Pat Deshler told WKC Board members that past winner Kelli Denton will be using her scholarship at Texas Christian University this fall. The amount is approximately $5,500. Conformation Classes: Treva Faires reported that the last class of the current series will be Thursday night July 26, Kansas Federation of Dog Clubs: Pat Deshler told board members there will be a meeting in Topeka on Saturday, August 25, Pat also ed some samples of logos for KFDS to some board members for their opinions. Nomination Committee: President Treva Faires told board members that the nomination committee is made up of Milli Dold, Patty Behrns, and Joe Miller with Liz Cowman serving as an alternate. AKC Rule on Reserved Grooming: The Board discussed the new rule that show-giving clubs must submit a "plan" to AKC. Clubs must divide reserved (paid) and free grooming space to approximately 50/50. The Sunflower Cluster is already in compliance. Spring Show: Building & Grounds Chairman, Mike Williams confirmed that the 2013 Cluster will again rent one golf cart and borrow one each from Milli Dold and Kim Jenning. Sanctioned B Matches: The WKC needs a new match chairman for the spring show. Kim Jenning will try to recruit a new match chairperson. The Board discussed whether or not to put on a fall match. No decision was made. WKC Fall Picnic: President Treva Faires reminded the board that the September General Membership meeting will include our Annual Picnic/BBQ. Members will bring their own meat to grill and a salad, side dish, or dessert to share. Continued on Page 6

5 Page 5 of 6 July 25 WKC Board Minutes Continued NEWS FOR THE DOG FANCIER WKC Programs for General Membership Meetings: Treva Faires will look into a local vet who is specializing in pain management for animals who may be available for an educational program. Future General Membership Meetings: The Board voted to try for six months (beginning in August) having the "program" part of the meeting first followed by the business meeting. The WKC Board voted to award a Lifetime Achievement Award at the December meeting/holiday Party. Meeting adjourned at 8:12 PM. Kim Jenning Recording Secretary Great Indoor Activities for You and Your Dog While we all love spending time outdoors with our dog, summer weather often prevents it. Here is a list of indoor activities you can do with your furry friend. Some of the activities may not be right for your dog so try some out and see which you both prefer. 1. Hide and Seek This is a game that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Have your dog search for his favorite toy, person, or a tasty treat. Let your dog sniff the item, then use a command like, Find It. 2. Grooming Although this isn t an indoor only activity, it can be a nice bonding time for you and your pet. Pamper your pooch with a nice bath and manicured nails (and maybe a deep tissue massage while you re at it). 3. Teaching/learning new commands or tricks This activity will stimulate your dog s mental skills and also strengthen the bond between the two of you. 4. Toys There are many puzzle toys currently on the market that aim to engage your dog s cognitive functions and help relieve them of boredom. Dogs work their hardest to find hidden treats within the toys and relentlessly (usually through trial and error) get those treats out. 5. Playdates Arrange a rendezvous for your dog! Just like you would have a play date for your child or you would meet a friend for lunch, dogs like to socialize as well. 6. Indoor Dog Park Indoor dog parks are popping up all over the United States. If you have one in your area, consider yourself one of the lucky ones and coordinate a visit. The many amenities you can find there may include a pool, café, spa, and free Wi-Fi. Membership pricing may apply but usually outweigh per-day pricing in value. 7. Treadmill If you have a treadmill at home, you can see if your dog would enjoy getting some use out of the machine as well. Start slow to get your pet used to the treadmill, and if they enjoy it, begin to adjust the speed to a comfortable level. Just remember that a treadmill is not a replacement for all exercise and walks and you should never leave your pet unattended on the treadmill. 8. Visit a friend or loved one If you have ever considered doing therapy work with your dog, start by taking him to visit someone you know. Be sure to get permission first and be sure your pet is clean enough to come calling. 9. Go Shopping Did you know many department stores and shopping malls allow dogs? Look online for store policies before taking your dog shopping. A well-behaved canine shopper is sure to get lots of attention and praise.
