Antecedent of the Lakeland Terrier Looking back from 1980 Revied edition 2009 Ron Punter

Thi book i a not intended to be a definitive hitory of the breed but i imply a compilation of the reearch I have accumulated over many year. It i printed in the hope that it will be of interet a a upplement to information already publihed by other. Ron Punter Radcliffe 1998 Thi 2009 edition contain minor reviion of the text. Pleae honour copy write and credit me in any extract ued. In the Shire Fox Terrier were required to fluh out for the continuance of the chae, any fox that had taken refuge in an untopped earth or drain. In Lake Ditrict Mountain Fox Hunting the terrier ha to work in the huge pile of fallen boulder known a borran and actually come to grip with the fox and very often dipatch it. Thi ditinction in the different work ha ometime been overlooked when comparing the Lakeland with other imilar breed of terrier, both by Lakeland Terrrier breeder and other. Fell Terrier were conidered uitable for working with Otter Hound a well a Fox Hound and the Wet Cumberland Otter Hound played a part in the formation of the Lakeland Terrier.

Origin of the Lakeland Terrier Dog have been man contant companion for at leat twelve thouand year and ome author would have you believe they can trace their breed back that far. Perhape we would like to think that Lakeland are repreented in cave painting but the truth i that mot breed were created in Victorian time and the Lakeland a good deal later than that. The hitory of the of the Lakeland ha been covered in ome detail in everal article and we now have Frank Jone comprehenive book; However jut to recap with a very hort potted hitory :-Terrier breed originate in the Britih Ile but it the French, 1359, pelling of Gace de la Vigne Poème Sur la Chae that ha been univerally adopted - bon chien Terrier. The firt mention in Englih print i of Teroure in In 1667 Nichola Cox ay there are two type of Working Terrier, one having haggy coat and traight limb, the other mooth coat and hort bent leg. Some year later Blone wrote everybody that i a fox hunter i of opinion that he hath a good breed, and ome will ay that the Terrier i a peculiar pecie of itelf. Painting of Terrier from the early 1800 generally how a mixed bunch but by the middle of the century everal ditinct Terrier breed are emerging. Under Kennel Club regitration the Fox Terrier become the how dog par excellence. The Terrier of the Lake Ditrict were of a working type and hown locally outide of Kennel Club recognition. By 1910 people were talking about the new improved Fell Terrier and in 1912 decided to adopt the name Lakeland Terrier. The Lakeland Terrier Aociation (now defunct) wa founded in 1921 and regulated the breed - member were plit on whether K.C. recognition wa deirable or not. In 1928 a majority wa obtained in favour of application for Kennel Club claification, which wa ubequently granted, the breed wa cheduled at the Kennel Club how in October of that year. Championhip Statu wa achieved in It i the breeding of our dog rather than the hitory of the breed that thi book i about. The fact that Mr Tweedie Evergreen Double wa the firt champion i well known but are any of our preent day Lakeland Terrier decended from him?

From the evidence collected about the antecedent of the breed. The tory which emerge i that hunt Terrier of the Lake Ditrict were developed into a recogniable type; Then a group of working men, centred on the little Cumbrian town of Egremont, netling between the feet of Ennerdale and Ekdale, eized the opportunity of improving thee little dog of the ditrict. It from the econd tage improvement that modern Lakeland Terrier are decended. In the time of the great economic depreion a few pound for a puppy wa a welcome income. Well off patron uch a Alice Spence and Tom Meageen provided incentive for breeder. Smart terrier can be produced by cro breeding. The Old Englih Wire-haired Black and Tan Terrier, wa a rival to the Welh Terrier in the late 1880 and a better looking dog at the time. Walter S Glyn aid that it wa manufactured for look only and that he could not beget himelf for no exhibit wa hown that wa out of one and by one. Black and Tan were oon defunct but Welh go from trength to trength - Winning Cruft in recent year. A vindication of Glyn preference for pure blood line. How pure bred i the modern Lakeland? My work with pedigree tarted off, with a few volume of the early tud book, a network pedigree wa contructed of the interrelationhip. Thi network wa conceived like a wiring diagram - the problem wa that a it grew ection had to be flipped over to top line from croing. To add another dog often neceitated redrawing mot of the diagram. When I came into poeion of a full et of thoe Stud Book with Lakeland entrie the chart wa continued in the hope that ome clear line would emerge. Intead of the expected reduction in blood line the chart jut grew. After pending a couple of thouand hour on thi project the only concluion i that pre war breeding wa divere. It wa impoible to take the chart any further becaue of the lack of record for the war year - even if I had any trength remaining for uch a Herculean tak.

Hunt Terrier In 1873, the Patterdale (originally known a the Helvellyn) and the Bald How (Matterdale) amalgamated to form the Ullwater Foxhound. Coincidentally the Kennel Club wa founded in the ame year. The legendary Joe Bowman became Huntman in 1879 and carried the horn for forty or more year. One of the main ditinguihing characteritic of Border Terrier i the Otter head aid to have been brought into that breed via North Tyne Gyp from which they are all decended. Gyp pedigree goe back to Bowman Terrier. It hould be clearly undertood that the Border head type wa conidered incorrect in a Lakeland Terrier and did not come from the Ullwater breeding. Ironically we cannot prove that any modern how Lakeland are decended from Bowman terrier. Long after the name Lakeland Terrier wa officially agreed upon, Lakeland were often referred to a Patterdale, a train that wa aid to be over a hundred year old even then. The name Patterdale Terrier i completely miued nowaday being motly applied to black working terrier and in particular mooth coated one of a type that have nothing to do with Paterdale. Wore till we now have almot any type of Fell terrier maquerading a Lakeland. Moop Nelon wa the third generation to hunt in Patterdale; on of Aaron Nelon the Patterdale choolmater and firt ecretary of the Ullwater, hi grandfather George wa a Lakeland hepherd, all three had bred terrier for the hunt. When the Lakeland Terrier Aociation wa founded in 1921 Moop Nelon thought on Terrier were publihed.- Major (with C.R.Farrer) i by Jim Dalton (Blencathra) own dog which won a prize or two ome year ince. He wa by Gillett, which I think belong [to] the Cockermouth Otter Hound and had a great name all the country over for gamene. Major mother i a real good little bitch and will face anything. She i from the old ort and by a white dog called Major. There wa a Major William about Barrow-in-Furne, who kept a breed of white fox terrier which were aid to be particularly game, and ome went in for croing with them, and I think mot of them turned out very good. Thi i how Major got hi name.

I don t care for croing with white myelf. You never can tell what you are going to get, epecially in colour, and I have a great feeling about keeping to the old breed of what ha ometime been called the Patterdale terrier; brown or blue in colour with a hard coat, a narrow front, a trong jaw, not nipy like the preent how fox terrier, but at the ame time not too bullet-like to how a upicion Page 6 of bulldog cro - a hort trong back, and leg which will help him to work hi way underground and give him a much better chance of climbing over rough boulder when at work. A very hort legged terrier i of little ue in mountain foxhunting. Eye hould be mall and dark and how a game expreion, ear medium in ize and dropping neatly to the ide of the head, leg trong in bone, feet round and cat-like, and latly he hould alway carry the head and tail up - that i, to how himelf to the bet advantage. Thee are my rough idea of what a Patterdale terrier hould be in appearance. I might add that I like to ee a good notril, not a mall pinched-up one, and the teeth hould be ound and white and the jaw level. The greatet drawback i we can t tell the hunting power or the gamene from appearance only, and if an attempt i made to breed them to a certain tandard of point, I would recommend in the cae of dog old enough for the work expected of them, to furnih proof or certificate that they are game, good hunter and killer. The bonniet dog to be found i no ue to Joe Bowman if he ha no pluck and dare not even creep out of ight. The owner of Major, Kitty Farrer, wa whip to the Ullwater pack and lived near the kennel at Howton. He wa one of the firt exhibitor of Lakeland; A wa Dougla Pailey, who wa at the time of the L.T.A. formation honorary chief whip to the Blencathra. Thee men had real knowledge of the breed, it purpoe and original environment. The Ulwater became quite a fahionable hunt in it way, with lot of follower from Mancheter and other far flung place. The wetern ide of the fell wa not a well known and had fewer viitor - in any cae the name Patterdale Terrier roll of the tongue better than Ekdale and Enerdale Terrier but it undertandable that the name Lakeland Terrier found mot favour.

Dobon had only been dead for two year in Tommy worked at the lowly trade of turning bobbin for the local indutry that wove Hodden Grey, the coare woollen cloth that John Peel Coat o Grey wa made from. He roe to become mater of the Ekdale and Ennerdale. Willie Porter wa huntman in Although Moop Nelon ue the term Patterdale Terrier he praie Willie Tyon of Black Hall, Ekdale (the other ide of Scafell) and ay when he wa young hi father had Terrier from there. A brindle bitch, Fury, from there - Bred me ome good one to our Teazer. - Later we had another Black Hall dog, Roger, a real good one. Thee terrier had good hard, harh coat which too many of our terrier are hort of to-day. - Willie Porter (Ekdale and Ennerdale) only lat May Fair told me he had ome with a bit of the ame breed in them and he aid he would end me a whelp omeday. - I alway look back to Teazer a the tarting point of father and my breed of terrier, and old Jane of father, which wa mother of my Pepper, training back to him. More good terrier have decended from Pepper than any other within my own kin. - My old Bitch, Pepper, had two litter to old Will Riton Cæar at Wadale Head. Old Will Riton long been lying, along with Tommy Dobon, in Boot church yard but perhap hi dog Cæar blood till run in the vein of our Lakeland Terrier. Having extended the range of the Fell Terrier beyond Patterdale, we mut now rein it back a bit from what ha ometime been uggeted - John Peel area, he lived at Ruthwaite, Ireby and hunted the relatively flat country back of Skiddaw including the Uldale and Caldbeck common, hi wa not a fell pack. Skiddaw Foret wa hunted by the Blencathra, with Squire John Crozier a mater for 64 year in Peel day. A lot more could be aid about the hunt but for thoe intereted, Skelton book Reminicence of Joe Bowman quote Moop Nelon more fully, it make facinating reading and i mot informative on hunting in the Lake. Clapham Fox Hunting on the Lakeland Fell i not o informative and ay little about terrier.

Improving the Lakeland Terrier The following i part of a letter ent by Alf Johnton (Oregill) to Irene Morri (Kelda) on the 29 Augut 1951, in which he dicue the breeding of the early dog and in particular cro breeding with Wire-haired Fox Terrier. Previouly publihed in the Lakeland Terrier Club year book 1986/7. The bet Lakeland or Working Terrier [a it] wa called then, about 1920, when I firt took any notice of them, wa a dog called Spedding Scamp, a half bred one, in fact nearly all the leading dog in thoe day were half bred, and many ince, including Champion - Fox Terrier and Lakeland cro, but it i eaier aid than done. I have pent many year on thi game and more often unlucky than lucky. Spedding Scamp wa ire to Catle Bugler (Fletcher ) out of a bitch called Flower Girl, a good wire bitch but lame, and the two dog were the foundation of the leading train today including my own. Fletcher Peggy wa iter to Bugler and wa mated to Kitchen Central Grip, another half bred, bred at Ennerdale, and thee two produced Vic of Watwater and Central Midge. The former belonged to Mr Crellin of Thornhill, and Central Midge to Mr Kitchen, bred by Fletcher. Thee two bitche were really good ound tock. Vic of Watwater won well and produced Grip of Watwater, a leading dog of it day, ired by Bookwell Britle, another half bred one. Thi dog belonged to Mr Hartley and wa ired by Mr W Mawon (father to Joe of Egremont) Jim, a Wire. Ch Lady of the Lake and my Oregill Lady (later bought by Mr Spence) were bred the ame way. Of coure, thi i a long way back or before that. Now Midge wa mated to another half bred called Gyp, Mr Robinon dog ired by Bookwell Britle and a real one. Never hown but ired many good winner including Scawfell Guide, Girl Guide, Central Rock and Squire.

It wa remarkable how thee half bred ired uch good colour, the few mimarked one were drowned. But you can ee where the white i coming from. I ued to ue a dog called Terry, another half bred one by S. Scamp. Lovely little dog, never hown, but it wa the foundation of the Oregill tock. He produced me a red one called Bullet and wa mated to a Wire of Mr Wilton Benn, and produced High Lea Laddie, and thi i where the red grizzle came in, croing the red dog with black and tan. I produced a bitch called Show lady, a real beauty. Then I had Red Lady another red which produced red grizzle. Singleton of thoe day were half Bedlington. In fact, I have a photo of Jake [Singleton] and myelf omewhere which how hi type then. If I find it I will end it to you. Scawfell Guide wa a real terrier, and won a great deal. He wa a real black and tan and ired many leading dog, including champion, a he mated many white bitche and done well a he wa fairly well colour bred for two generation. Tweedie Evergreen[] Double wa the reult of Grip of Watwater out of a little mooth black and tan, and did much harm to the breed, at leat I alway blamed him, for he ired big one, mall one and mooth one. No breeding behind him, and the county all ued him becaue he wa the firt Champion, and put them back year. Of coure, [in thoe] day few people were really intereted in the Lakeland, only a mongrel bred dog. I wa very keen on type and till [am]. I need a Fox terrier only black and tan. Both dog are made for the ame job, o why hould they be different. Only the Wire went in for the long lean head. We don t want that. I encloe all thee photo and marked them to give you ome idea what dog were like year ago. Ch Mockerkin Mac, Guardman and other were only half bred but [did] much good to get the type we need.

Fletcher Flower Girl good wire bitch but lame Spedding Scamp half bred d Fletcher Catle Bugler Terry half bred Bullet Mr Wilton Benn Wire d High Lee Laddie Fletcher Peggy d Kitchen Central Grip half bred - bred at Ennerdale W Mawon Jim a Wire Kitchen Central Midge bred by Fletcher Mr Crellin of Thornhill Vic of Watwater d Mr Hartley Bookwell Britle half bred Little Smooth Black and Tan d Grip of Watwater Tweedie Evergreen Double Ch Lady of the Lake Oregill Lady Robinon Gyp half bred d Scawfell Guide Girl Guide Central Squire Rock Breeding of ome of the early dog according to Alf Johnton letter to Mi Morri

Breeding of Ch Evergreen Double according to hi breeder What Alf Johnton ay motly doen t actually contradict the tud book - dog he ay are half breed uually have one unregitered (and untraceable) parent or even unknown. In ome cae they might poibly more likely be three quarter Lakeland than jut half. He could well be lightly mitaken with hi verion of Ch Evergeen Double breeding, the official verion i very nearly the ame and there doen t eem any good reaon to doubt Mr Tweedie record. The decription of Albermarle Pippin a a - little mooth black and Tan could apply to lot of regitered Lakeland at the time, even Bob Gibbon Lady of Kinniide who won over 20 CC didn t have much in the way of furnihing by modern tandard. (I wa alway told that Lady of Kinniide won 23 CC but can only find 21 in the tud book. Cripy Ferndale Forger did win 23 CC in the 1970 and became generally acknowledged a the breed record holder) Mr Johnton judgement of Evergreen Double breeding potential eem to have been borne out - only one champion, Ch Son of Bluebird, goe back to Evergeen Double in the direct male line o he certainly never founded any ort of dynaty. The tud book how another even champion going back in the mail line to the official ire of Ch Evergreen Double - Ch Crab of Watwater o perhap Ch E.G. did have a bit of breeding behind him for hi day.

Agricultural Show Alice Spence decribed Ennerdale Show a at the back of beyond and it till eem a long way up the valley. If the weather good it the mot gloriou place on earth. When my family were young we pent many happy hour there and at other Lakeland how. Thee Agricultural how have long been a feature of Lakeland life, the dog clae pre-date the etablihment of the breed a the Lakeland Terrier. Originally the clae were for Coloured Terrier - uitable for fox or otter. The term Coloured, when ued for a hore, implie motly white (Piebald or Skewbald) but in Lake ditrict terrier it mean the oppoite -very little if any white. A couple of eparate clae are offered for White Terrier - uitable for fox or otter. In the 1930 many exhibitor were very much againt the Kennel Club how and would have preferred to carry on with Coloured Working Terrier. In fact many did o but mot have now diverted from type. Ennerdale how in the latter quarter of the twentieth century wa probably much a it wa at the turn of the previou century, the dog claification wa the ame but now in the Twenty Firt century ome country how are miuing the Lakeland Terrier name for Fell Terrier. 17 Mr. Bruce wa alo ecretary to the hound trailing aociation. 20 The Line Bill Kitchen wa the younget of the family, more like two generation away from hi father. Although Bill himelf howed Bedlington he wa a link to the early day of the Lakeland breed. It wa alway a pleaure to talk with Bill at the how. Not long before hi untimely death, at a relatively young age, he gave me the pedigree of hi father dog Scawfell Guide. Thi pedigree goe back into the unregitered dog which formed the breed. Scawfell Guide wa by Gyp out of Central Midge. In 1947 Alf Johnton wrote to the old Dog World newpaper to correct inaccurate information regarding Central Midge, that had appeared in the breed note; Thi i what he wrote:- She wa born in November 1925 and wa ired by Mr Kitchen Grip out of Mr Fletcher Peggy whoe brother wa the famou Catle Bugler. Her litter iter wa Mr Crelling Vic of Watwater, who wa the dam of many well know terrier amongt whom were Ch Egton Lady of the Lake and Oregill Lady, another grandon wa the famou Crab of Watwater bred and owned by the late Mr Crellin. Central Midge wa very well known in her day and wa the winner of over 100 prize. She gained the cup at Borrowdale (two eparate year) and alo won the Lakeland Terrier Aociation gold medal which wa given for the mot point gained during the eaon at the local how. She wa the dam of many well known terrier amongt which were Scawfell Guide, Rigide Dolly and Central Squire, all of whom are to be found in our preent day pedigree. Alf Johnton goe on to ay that Bill Father - never had the joy of eeing her (Midge) he lot hi ight in a mine exploion two day before he wa born. Bill alway wore the gold medal, referred to, on a chain round hi neck. Modetly Alf doen t mention that he handled Midge and the medal wa one of two he won for owner.

The bulk of what Alf Johnton wrote wa already known, before the new paper clipping wa found, and eaily verified by the tud book but hi information that Fletcher Peggy wa the brother of Catle Bugler wa a break through a the tud book give the breeding of Catle Bugler and conequently of Peggy. (Poibly Peggy wa later regitered a Catle Queen a the tud book ometime give Vic of Watwater dam a Catle Queen and other time a Peggy ). The uphot of all thi i that the pedigree of all modern Lakeland go back to Scamp and Flower Girl in many different line. An old pedigree in the poeion of Mi Morri (Kelda) gave the owner - Spedding Scamp and Fletcher Flower Girl. Thi breeding i confirmed by the pedigree Bill gave me but alo take u back further: Scamp i by Gillett out of another Peggy (it mut be another he cannot be her own granddaughter). Flower Girl i by Bankend Bugler out of an unknown bitch. The elder Peggy appear in Guide ire Gyp line and her breeding i given a Propect Pirate out of Joyful New. Thi take u back four generation before the tart of the regiter. Catle Bugler ired Brico Expected who got Ehen Echo the ire of Ch Guardman, thi i the direct male line to all our modern Lakeland, o it wa particularly ignificant when Ike Vicker (Ellenide) found an old pedigree which gave the breeding of Gillett who belonged to Mr C.H. Studholme of the Ekdale and Ennerdale Fox Hound. Thi take u back a fifth generation before the firt regitered dog but that may not be very many year, Gillet grandon ired Central Midge in 1925 but Gillet himelf wa till iring pup in 1929 o it likely he wa a young dog in 1924 which would put the tart of our know pedigree at circa It not likely that Gillet i the one referred to by Moop Nelon, thi would have been an earlier Gillet. The repeated ue of the ame name i a problem. At the turn of the 19/20 th century Major P.F. Brine compiled a tud book of the Welh Terrier. He recorded 123 eparate Fan and almot a many Nell. The old Lakeland breeder were quite imaginative by comparion.

The ame year that Scawfell Guide dam won the gold medal hi ire, Gyp, won the Lakeland Terrier Aociation ilver challenge cup for the bet dog with a working certificate. Gyp wa a blue terrier owned by Mr C.R. (Kitty) Farrer. Spedding wa Bob Spedding, the engine man at the Haile Moor Iron Ore Mine (a few mile outh eat of Egremont). He bred hi lat litter in 1952; Jack Pickering (Edgecliff) bought a bitch from thi litter, Birdie of Edgecliffe, a a preent for hi on when he paed for the grammar chool. Birdie i in the pedigree of Ch Edgecliffe Venu. Although blinded Bill Kitchen ability to ae a dog with hi hand wa legendary, Alan Jonhton (Oregill -Alf grandon) writing in the Lakeland Terrier Society Year Book 1993 relate the tory of how Bill could ditinguih a dog coat colour by it texture - even ucceeding when Alf preented him with two very unuual and unexpected olid black pup. Bill had a brother, Harold who lived at Ennerdale, Alice Spence refer to a time when he went to Ennerdale looking for a dog and along came Mr Kitchen with a bitch - Lemon Lady that later became a champion and wa exported to Sweden. Preumably thi wa Harold Kitchen. Fletcher might be Tom Fletcher of Central Avenue Egremont. Crelling wa a very keen exhibitor who lived at Thornhill, he collaped in the ring, whilt howing a dog, and died in the arm of Alice Graham Spence. After hi death Bob Gibbon bought Lady of Kiniide from Crelling on and he won over 20 CC which i probably till the record for a bitch. Central eem to be a ort of unofficial affix - preumably relating to Central Avenue in Egremont but it i not clear if thi wa ued by Fletcher or Bill Kitchen Senior. Fletcher had ome dog with the affix Catle and Kitchen everal Central but Catle, which poibly relate to the old medieval Catle Croft ditrict of Egremont where Central Avenue now tand, wa later ued by other. Thee appellation were obviouly not excluive to a particular breeder or owner a regitered affix are.

Jake Singleton with Ch Guardman Ch Guardman became the mot influential ire at the end of the pre war period - depite being forced to retire early from tud. One of many dog made infertile, in thoe day, by the train of ditemper known a hard pad -lucky to urvive. Guardman could be conidered to be the tart of the male line of modern type Lakeland.

Old publihed picture of dog often owe more to art than the cience of photography. Extenive retouching even repoitioning of tail etc. i in evidence on many original. Remember the old cautionary tale about the American who bought a dog on the trength of a picture in the Dog Paper - when the dog arrived he telegraphed the vendor :- Take dog back top Send Photographer top Many of the old photograph of Lakeland were taken by Harry Hedge of Lytham St. Anne. Hi tudio had three whitewahed wall and the other wa entirely window. On the floor were a erie of permanent mark, to poition the feet of each terrier breed. The handler wa required to poition himelf out of the hot whilt holding the lead. Fine but trong cotton thread wa attached to the end of the dog tail and hitched up via a pulley. There wa a cat kin hanging on the wall facing the dog ( I hope the cat died a natural death ); a pring releae wa operated - the cat kin hot up the wall - the dog prang to attention and the camera hutter operated. Automated, one hot only, never failed! It nice to have ome informal picture from which to get an impreion of the dog but naphot of thi ort tend not to keep very well, epecially when they have been pinned up on the kennel wall for thirty year. The print that how Alf Johnton with Ch Oregill Cracker wa entirely natural but in very poor condition, It wa re-photographed, uing every trick in the book and the very bet material, to bring out the image. It computer canned imaging that ha made it economical to produce thi little book in the mall number of copie that are likely to be required. When the original i of good quality the computer canned image in thi book come out reaonably well but the poor quality of much of the original material and copie i to be regretted.

Note: The importation of American breeding lightly cloud the iue a the pedigree have not been traced back but I think it reaonable to aume that it ha the ame root tock and that all our dog go back to Eddy Johnton Ch Blackwell Ravelaye Recruit bred by Jake Singleton. In 2014 I gave an American bred dog hi third CC to make him a UK champion -thought he might have poilt the record (but of coure thing like that are not a conideration when judging.) Subequently found that he doe indeed go back to Recruit in direct tail male line ee blog page under pedigree. Ch Am Ch Larkpur Acadia Save Me A Spot The method of looking backward along the tail male line i abolutely ruthle and take no account of any influence from mot of the pedigree. For 1980 onward it would be intereting to ee if the line come forward to a particular dog but a Andrew Marvel wrote to hi Coy Mitre - If we had but world enough and time. If, in 1980, I had been aked to place a wager on which line would continue my money would have been on Tarnbreck Comet but I upect that it Ch Liduff Golden Rock that ha had the mot influence in the pedigree of more recent winner. Many bitche, a well a dog, are line breed to him.
