Big, Brown, Fluffy Newf in the Movies A Star is Born! We were delighted that our 3-year old Molly was selected to "star" in the upcoming HBO movie, Too Big to Fail. The movie is based on Andrew Ross Sorkin's book of the same name about the recent financial crisis. The movie stars William Hurt as former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, and Billy Crudup as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geitner. It also features Ed Asner as Warren Buffett, Tony Shalhoub as John Mack, Paul Giamatti as Ben Bernanke, and Ayad Akhtar as Neel Kashkari. Molly has about a 10-second walk-on role as the pet Newfie of Neel Kashkari. The scene with Molly was filmed on October 15, near 3rd St. NW and Constitution Ave., NW in Washington, D.C. What an adventure! The crew and supporting staff numbered nearly 90; they were very friendly and accommodating. We watched as three scenes were filmed: on the Mall, in front of the Capitol, and on the corner of Constitution Ave. The scene in which Molly appears was filmed just after dusk; it involves Neel Kashkari coming down the walkway with his pet Newfie when he receives a cell phone call. The whole process for all three scenes, which involved multiple "takes," took about four hours and was really interesting. As you can imagine, Molly received a lot of attention from the cast and crew, as well as from tourists and other passers-by. Thank you for the opportunity to show off our Molly who certainly is a "star" at our house! - Ann and Russ Corbett Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 7

Colonial Newfoundland Club 2010 Water Tests Friday, Aug 20th WRDX Saturday, Aug 21 st WD/WRD Sunday, Aug 22nd WD/WRD Judges: Bethany Karger and Bob Mister Rogers The Colonial Newfoundland Club held its annual water tests from August 20 th through August 22nd, 2010 at Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park, Hanover, PA The weather gods were smiling upon us on Friday, as conditions were clear and calm; however, we arrived at the site to find a Civil War re-enactment encampment in an adjacent field, complete with soldiers, horses, cannon, and even a stage-set town! Undaunted by the prospect of a nearby war scene, we proceeded with our judges briefings and stewards run-throughs. We had 6 WRDX hopefuls, and although all the dogs worked diligently, and most came very close, in the end we had 1 (re)qualifier. In the afternoon, as many were practicing for the next day s tests, two local TV network affiliates sent camera crews to film, and interview some of the entrants. Their segments were aired during newscasts several times that evening. Dinner that night was at The Stables restaurant in Westminster, Md On Saturday, we were again blessed by favorable weather, and thanks to the TV coverage, we had quite a few spectators on the hill, including some from the 19 th century! Again, Bethany and Bob met with our entrants and stewards for questions; after a brief interlude (to chase away a flock of geese in the middle of the test area!) the test got underway. Thanks to the efficient work of our judges and stewards, we were able to finish up in early afternoon, just before a barrage of cannon fire signaled the start of the battle taking place nearby. We had 5 new WDs one of whom bumped up to earn her WRD and 2 WRD requalifiers. The evening s festivities took place at Parks Landing in Westminster. Sunday dawned with an overcast sky, and a strong, ever-changing wind. The judges had to do several test drops to compensate for the variable conditions. All the dogs had to work hard to retrieve fast-moving articles, and to catch up to the boat. We ended the day with 2 new WDs and 3 WRD requalifiers. In memory of Tugger Christi Smith presented special awards on test both days to the Oldest Qualifying Newfs. Avery was honored on Saturday, and Makai was honored on Sunday. MANY thanks to our terrific judges, the Test Committee, volunteers, and especially our intrepid stewards! Special kudos to our Hospitality Crew, for keeping us all well-fed, AND hydrated for three days!!! ALL OF YOU make the Chair s job easy!! Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 11

The New Adventures Of Vinnie As per our custom, Vinnie and I attended this year s CNC Water Test as both spectators and photographic recorders of the event. The 2010 Water Test was certainly worth the trip from Williamsburg, VA to Hanover, PA. Like most CNC water tests, there were many memorable events that took place. We arrived in York, Pennsylvania on Thursday, August 19 th. The CNC Annual Water Test was starting the next day, with the WRDX test scheduled for 9:00AM the next morning. Vinnie and I took the I-95 route through Baltimore instead of our usual back way through Frederick, MD and Gettysburg. We were helping the SENC deliver a rescue Newf to its forever home in New Hampshire. Yours truly drove the rescue Newf on the Richmond to Baltimore leg. I decided that I needed to physically FIND the designated meeting spot for me to relinquish the dog to the next person on the journey. The mission was accomplished; I now knew where Exit 21 is on I-695 around Baltimore. Friday was the first day of the water test. CNC was again using the lake at Codorus State Park in Hanover, PA. As is also the custom, the only test held on this day was the WRDX. We had only one or two qualifiers. As usual, the three person save was a major sticking point for the dogs in attendance. Saturday, August 21 saw the WD test in the morning the WRD test in the afternoon. It was at this day s activities that this writer saw one of the most amazing events that he has seen at a water test. A young Landseer named Hera earned BOTH her WD and her WRD titles in the SAME day. Moreover, this dog had NEVER taken part in a water test before! This young lady Landseer (she still had that puppy look and was CERTAINLY younger than two) earned the nicknamed The dog that kicked butt and took names. Hera s owners tell me they think that she is perfectly capable of passing the WRDX test. It s unfortunate Hera was not able to get THREE water titles due to a scheduling matter. It s impressive enough that she earned TWO water titles the SAME day. Sunday was not the beautiful day that we saw Saturday. I was not able to really get that many good photographs, so I stopped taking after just a few shots. Vinnie and I then went and did some touring around Gettysburg that afternoon. Vinnie and I are grateful for all of the planning and participation that made the 2010 water test such a nice event. --Brad Cole Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 15
Hank s Story--Rehabilitation: A BIG Dog Survives Man and beast prove their mettle, when thrust, unaware, unprepared, and untested into the precarious middle, unfolding between an initial episode and finality. In late February of 2007, our 5 year- old Newfoundland, Hank, suddenly began limping. An orthopedic assessment indicated that he needed surgery on his left hind stifle. To stabilize the knee joint, an orthopedic surgeon performed a procedure called Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteometry on March 16 th. Hank was discharged from the surgery center the next day. My husband, Dick, and I were provided with Hank s pain medication, initial physical therapy instructions, and a thin, rolled, white, cotton rag, with knotted handles at each end to use as a support sling under his belly. Hank managed to control himself on the trip home to D.C. from Virginia. In our basement, fastidious Hank urinated all over himself so many times that I stopped counting my cleanup efforts. His soulful, brown eyes scanned my face in an expression of misery, begging me to Do something! The pain medications and ice packs were not much help. He barely moved. He hobbled outside to relieve himself with my encouragement, and the use of the support rag, which was no support at all for a 130-pound dog! Feeling useless, I slept on the basement couch to be near him, and hoped for improvement. Three days after the surgery, early in the morning, he collapsed in the yard-a huge, crumbled, motionless mass. With much strain, Dick and I lifted him into my car. Numbed by his condition, I drove back to the Virginia surgery center, oblivious to the icy roads, and sea of trucks on the Beltway at rush hour. Orderlies lifted silent Hank onto the carpet of an elegant examining room. Hank s surgeon was unavailable, so the surgeon/director of the center, dressed in a suit and tie, entered, with an air of annoyance. He sat in a comfy chair, folded his arms across his chest, pointed his shiny Gucci loafers in our direction and said, What seems to be the problem? He gave Hank a cursory manual exam and announced that Hank s right hind stifle couldn t bear his weight and was now injured. Why now? The question was never answered. After paying $3, for the initial surgery and pain meds, I was given no advice only a bill for $85.00 more for a two-minute exam. I was told that no surgery could be performed on the right knee until the left one healed. How do you heal a dead-weight lump of misery? Do you put him down, as was intimated? Frantically, I called Hank s vet, located in the Georgetown area of D.C., who said to get Hank to his hospital and he would find a rehabilitation placement. Under no circumstances was the dog to be euthanized. A placement was found at the Animal Rehabilitation and Wellness Institute associated with North Carolina State University s College of Veterinary Medicine in Raleigh. Dick and I weighed the significant costs involved versus Hank's possible recovery. It was a no-brainer for us. I spent several hours, sitting on the hospital floor, beside motionless, apathetic Hank, attempting to provide the normal, morning home routine of giving my opinions on articles from the Washington Post while waiting for the pet ambulance to arrive from Raleigh. At a nearby Starbucks, a server filled my canteen w/ ice water for his journey. I d packed a ditty bag with toys, and a pair of my smelly-scented socks. It took two orderlies, and the compassionate driver to lift Hank onto a twin size mattress. After good-bye hugs, and my stifled tears, so as not to upset him further, Hank was on his way South! (continued) Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 16
Hank s Story A Big Dog Survives continued The Institute provided for his food preferences, to include occasional bananas and homecooked chicken. Its initial goals were: to gain his trust, manage his pain, and begin supervised therapeutic exercises. The anticipated length of his stay was three to four months. He was placed on a twin size mattress, in a large private room, close to the office desk so he could observe the visitors, many of whom gave him attention, especially young children. His door was covered with drawings and get-well cards. He began aquatic therapy, using a large tank with a treadmill at the bottom. The tank was filled with water to chest- level. Under the constant supervision of a vet, he walked along the treadmill. The sessions were gradually increased to four each day. Hank enjoyed the relief of warm water therapy, and as he improved, he literally pulled the assistants past his door towards the tank. His willingness to participate in water therapy exercises, with ever increasing treadmill speed, was crucial to his recovery. We visited Hank five times, bringing our Portuguese Water Dog, Ms. Bacalao, Hank s buddy, with us each time. On our first visit, Hank eagerly nudged Bacalao, who rejected her buddy s advances. Adding to his misery, he thought we were there to take him home, and happily indicated that he was ready. To deny his enthusiastic expectation, was heart wrenching, and we could not imagine, how he felt. The tears flowed as we drove back to D.C. On subsequent visits, a resigned Hank, welcomed us, but made no motions to go home. By early May, Hank s efforts resulted in a healed left knee. Now, the right knee needed surgery. More pain was in the offing. Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little of NC State performed a Tibial Wedge Osteometry on Hank s right hind knee. The surgery went well, and Hank began the rehabilitation process again. This time, his pain level was monitored immediately after surgery. On his 6 th birthday, June 22, 2007, we arrived to bring him home. The staff had given him practice in the use of a sturdy, metal ramp with a rug base, which he d need to enter/exit our SUV. We were given his wide, comfortable, sheepskin belly support band. The staff gave a good-bye party for him with canine guests, one arriving speedily with back legs splayed on a two-wheeled cart. The h oderve was Hank s favorite banana slices, spread with peanut butter. In the parking lot, he hesitated, moving towards us, and then walking to the gathered staff, he d come to depend upon. It was Hank s spontaneous thank-you note to his wonderful, truly professional caregivers. By mid-july, energetic Hank was swimming daily in the waters of Maine. Newfoundlands are characterized as gentle, laid-back and stubborn. This Newfie stubbornly proved his mettle by opting for life! --contributed by Elaine Vande Hei Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 17
Middleburg Kennel Club Dog Show October 30 th - 31 st Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 18
The New Adventures Of Vinnie The Colonial Newfoundland Club regularly holds its Specialty and Supported Entry at the Middleburg Kennel Club show, held in the fall at Oatlands Plantation. Oatlands is a Nineteenth Century plantation located in Leesburg, Virginia. This year's event was held the weekend of Halloween, making the weather beautiful for our Newfs. It was with this in mind that I made my first trip to Oatlands since becoming a CNC member. I now regret that 2010 was the first year that we attended this event. According to the Middleburg Club, they have been hosting this event since 1983; it has been a two day event since The Middleburg Club states that this event is rated among the Top 10 dog shows in the United States by the AKC Gazette. Roughly 2000 dogs are in attendance at this show. This writer now understands this show s popularity, and he would definitely plan on attending next year with Vinnie. Vinnie and I left Williamsburg for Leesburg, Virginia on Friday, October 29. We had reservations to stay at our usual dog friendly motel in Manassas, an easy 20 minute drive to the show grounds. We drove straight to Leesburg from Williamsburg, having found in the past that it is best to know ahead of time how to get from our motel to our final destination. This turned out to be a good idea. We discovered a shortcut from the Oatlands Plantation show grounds to our motel in Manassas. When we arrived, we found lovely weather and a crowd that was busy setting up for the weekend events. We took a few pictures and headed back to our motel. We arrived around 10:00 AM on Saturday. This gave us plenty of time to find the ring where the Newfs were showing and to find the CNC s hospitality tent. The CNC s hospitality was first rate as usual. I then went back to the entrance of the plantation to take pictures and waited for my parents to arrive. My stepdad is a travel writer who is hoping to have his write-up of the event appear in a magazine. Upon their arrival, my parents first toured the plantation house and the grounds. They joined Vinnie and me at Ring 16 in time for the Sweeps. They stayed through judging and enjoyed the delicious lunch held at the CNC hospitality tent afterwards. My stepdad then tied up a few loose ends for his story. My folks headed back to Williamsburg on Sunday while I went back to the second day of the dog show. The show on Sunday was as well done as the one on Saturday. Sweeps were also held on Sunday while the regular class judging appeared to have even more Newfs entered than the class judging on Saturday. It will be interesting to see the final numbers of Newfs entered at both days events. Vinnie and I stayed around through lunch at the CNC s hospitality tent. Again, the committee outdid themselves and represented the CNC well. Unfortunately, Vinnie and I were exhausted and returned to our motel afterwards to catch up on our sleep. Both man and dog unfortunately had too good a time at the CNC Specialty and Sponsored Entry! Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 19

The Dog Lifeguards that leap from helicopters to save stranded swimmers CIVITAVECCHIA, Italy They leap from helicopters or speeding boats, bringing aid to swimmers who get into trouble off Italy s popular beaches. For these canine lifeguards, the doggie paddle does just fine. Hundreds of specially trained dogs from Italy s corps of canine lifeguards are deployed each summer to help swimmers in need of rescue. These lifedogs wear a harness or tow a buoy that victims can grab, or a raft they can sit on to be towed back to shore, and unlike their human counterparts, they can easily jump from helicopters and speeding boats to reach swimmers in trouble. With millions flocking to the crowded beaches each summer, the Italian Coast Guard says it rescues about 3,000 people every year and their canine helpers are credited with saving several lives. It takes three years for the canines to reach expert rescue status, and 300 dogs are fully trained for duty, said Roberto Gasbarri, who coordinates the Italian School of Canine Lifeguards program at a center outside of Rome in this seaside town. Dogs are useful in containing the physical fatigue of the lifeguard, toincrease the speed at which casualties are retrieved, to increase the security of both the casualty and of the lifeguard, Gasbarri said. The dog becomes a sort of intelligent life buoy. It is a buoy that goes by itself to a person in need of help, and comes back to the shore also by himself, choosing the best landing point and swimming through the safest currents, he said. The Civitavecchia center is one of a dozen around the country for the school founded more than 20 years ago in the northern province of Bergamo by Ferruccio Pilenga, whose first trainee was his own Newfoundland. The school will train any breed, as long as they weigh at least 66 pounds, but Labradors, Newfoundlands and golden retrievers are most commonly used because of their natural instinct for swimming. Each dog works in tandem with a human lifeguard, who also acts as the animal s trainer. Being retrievers, they set out to pick up anything we tell them, be it a human being, an object, or a fish, and they bring it back to the shore, said lifeguard Monia Lu- Colonial Newfoundland Club Fall Issue 92 Page 21
