This Summer flew by for me in large part due to an unusually busy Mayflower Society calendar that included our January BOA meeting and Spring Reception at the Hale-Byrnes House in May. The Summer included a couple of subcommittee meetings that produced a mission statement for our Delaware Mayflower Society, a draft of which was approved at our September 15th meeting. We are hopeful that this statement will assist our current and future boards in deciding where and how best to invest our time, money and efforts in accomplishing the goals of the society. This Fall is turning out to be the busiest season in memory due to copious amounts of planning for both our anniversary Compact Day luncheon as well as our first Greetings and Happy 60th Anniversary Cousins! The Fall season is upon us and on or about this day 398 years ago our Pilgrim ancestors were roughly half way through their treacherous journey across a harsh and threatening ocean. Fall reminds us of the cyclical nature of the seasons and of life itself. Speaking of seasons and life, this year marks the 60th season we have been a living body politic known as the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Delaware (SMDD). As such, we have planned some very special things for our Compact Day luncheon and annual meeting this ever SMDD sponsored Pilgrim and Thanksgiving community outreach program. I am excited to report that plans are quickly coming together for our First Annual Thanksgiving Remembered program to be held at the Bible Fellowship Church on November 17th, the night before our Compact Day luncheon. Celebrate your Pilgrim heritage and rekindle your own passion and enjoyment of this most meaningful of American holidays with a Pilgrim immersion weekend. Thanksgiving Remembered will help you, your family and friends capture the true spirit of the holiday and give a fresh depth of meaning to your own family observances. We trust that for many, annual attendance at this event will become a meaningful part of their family s Thanksgiving tradition for years to come. See the article on page 2 for more information and details. Finally, I want to take this opportunity to commend to you a newly published book by James W. Baker titled, THANKSGIVING; The Biography of an American Holiday. Baker was the Director of Research at Plimoth Plantation for many years and acted as an authority for numerous Thanksgiving Day exhibits, articles, newscasts and children s books. This book is destined to become a must read for anyone seeking to know or answer questions about the history and meaning of this uniquely American holiday. I doubt you will find anything this year (except possibly the Thanksgiving Remembered program mentioned earlier) that will fuel your interest or stir your excitement for Thanksgiving more than feasting upon the fascinating evolution of this important holiday. Even the detailed history and evolution of the Thanksgiving dinner itself is delightful reading to be savored just like the turkey and all the trimmings. As author Tony Horwitz puts it, after reading this book you ll never see your pumpkin pie quite the same way. Have a great autumn and I ll look forward to seeing you in November.y

Be inspired by the courage, humility and love that Bradford says epitomized these Pilgrims whose sacrificial love he described as, a rare example, and Worthy to be Remembered. Come, remember and celebrate the faith, love and gratitude to God that inspired the first harvest celebration enjoyed with Native friends and came to symbolize the spirit and soul of a nation. A time of refreshments, musket firing, period games and make-n-take crafts will follow. No reservation is required. y AN UNFORGETTABLE FAMILY MEMORY FOR ALL AGES. BIOGRAPHY: Aaron Bradford Aaron Bradford discovered a passion for history as a young child when he learned that he was a direct descendant of Plimoth Plantation Governor William Bradford. A strong personal connection with the past had a profound impact! For the past 21 years, Aaron has been sharing a love and passion for history from the Era of Jamestown through the American Civil War. He served individually and with several living history units and volunteered and worked at historic sites, including Hagley Museum, Fort Delaware, Greenbank Mill, Fort McHenry, and interned for the Providence Forum. Aaron and his father David have portrayed Governor William Bradford on numerous occasions, including at Bible Fellowship Church in Newark and the Arsenal Restaurant in New Castle. Aaron served as Education Chair with the Delaware Mayflower Society as well. After earning a degree for History Education at the University of Delaware, Aaron served at Pamplin Historical Park outside of Petersburg, Virginia. He now serves as Military Interpretation Coordinator and Public Historian for the Coastal Heritage Society of Savannah, Georgia. He is a grateful husband and proud father of three strapping young lads. y 2

3 SUBCOMMITTEE CREATES SMDD MISSION STATEMENT by David Bradford, Governor Since the 1970s, corporations, businesses and organizations across America have invested serious time and money into writing mission statements. This work was intended to concisely identify an organization s purpose and key elements necessary to achieve success. Today, these statements have become the cultural norm. Yet, the value attributed to such efforts has been a mixed bag with more than a few critics. While some claim mission statements are a waste of time and frequently too vague to yield any true functional value, others insist they are essential to keep focus on the important work of the organization and not stray from the organization s mission. This past spring a subcommittee of your Board of Assistants unanimously agreed that the time and effort to develop such a statement for the SMDD was both necessary and worthwhile. In January, 2018, Governor Bradford, AG Bob Hanson and Deputy Governor Charles Streitwieser were tasked to study, analyze and submit recommendations regarding potential use of online technology designed to enhance our administrative, communication and volunteer coordination efforts. The subcommittee concluded that a clear mission statement would greatly assist our board, as well as the efforts of future boards of assistants, to evaluate and make decisions on where and how best to direct people and finances in pursuing the aims of the society. The result is - in September, a mission statement was presented, modified and approved by the full Board of Assistants. The statement (below) will be presented to our members for adoption on November 17th at our annual meeting. The mission of the SMDD is To preserve and share Pilgrim history in a way that: Supports democratic principles of civil and religious liberty; Provides an historically accurate account and understanding of the Pilgrims, their relationship with the Wampanoag people, and contributions to the world; Provides transgenerational social and educational opportunities to appreciate the Pilgrim legacy; Helps people connect to our nation s Pilgrim heritage and their possible Mayflower lineage; So that Pilgrim values of faith, freedom, family and community remain honored and experienced by all generations. If approved by the membership, the mission statement will be adopted and printed in our Member Handbook and Member Directory. We are confident that a statement like this will become a valuable tool that informs and shapes board decisions now and in the future. y SLATE OF NOMINEES During the Annual Meeting portion of our Compact Day celebration, the members will vote to elect new officers for the coming year. The following nominees have been proposed by the Nominating Committee. Additional nominees may be proposed from the floor at the meeting as long as the nominee will be willing to serve if elected. GOVERNOR: DAVID BRADFORD (3 YEAR TERM) This will be a second term for David. In recent memory Governors have served for just one term; however, this is neither a break from tradition or prohibited by the bylaws. David is in a strong position to lead as we plan for the 2020 Celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. TREASURER: CHARLES E. STREITWEISER (3 YEAR TERM) With a background in financial matters, Charles will continue computerization and security of our records. ASSISTANT FOR SOCIAL MEDIA: AARON BRADFORD (3 YEAR TERM) Aaron is a natural for this position. He uses social media daily in his job for the Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah, GA and will continue to build our Society s presence on the world wide web and social media. ASSISTANT FOR EDUCATION: BARBARA WRIGHT (2 YEAR TERM) As our Society s interactions with the schools continue to evolve, so will the responsibilities of this position. Barbara will help David develop educational opportunities and programs through our year of celebration in y 3

4 The founding meeting of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Delaware (SMDD) was held October 11, The society s charter was awarded by Governor General Waldo Morgan Allen and received by our 1st Delaware Society Governor, Dr. Victor Washburn. Seven charter members are still with us including our founding Deputy Governor, Samuel Hallock DuPont (#29), who currently resides in Vero Beach, Florida. Other charter members include: Richard S. DuPont (#28), William K. DuPont (#30), George V. Lenher (#45), Thomas C. Richmond (#56), Daniel T. Washburn (#64) and Deborah E. Krape (#65). Richard and William DuPont and Deborah Krape are the only charter members who continue to reside in Delaware. Annual dues were set that year at $5 per member. Many wonderful and momentous events have followed 4 SMDD Celebrates 60 Years Dr. George P. Garmany, Jr., from Boulder, Colorado, was recently elected as Governor General of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. He has been a member of the Colorado Society since 1994, serving multiple offices there, including two terms as Governor. Prior offices in the General Society include four terms as Surgeon General and one term as Assistant Governor General, with numerous extra appointments during that time. Most recently he served three years chairing the 2020 Committee which engaged in planning for the activities for the General Society to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. George earned both his BA and MD degrees at the University of Virginia. He moved to Colorado for Residency training and practiced Neurology in Boulder for thirty-eight years. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and his long-term commitment to teaching resulted in an appointment as Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Colorado. He is a former President of the United Medical Staff of since that first meeting and throughout our 60 year history. The Mayflower Lynes began publication in 1960 by then Walter Gabel. He chose the name from the standpoint of the written line as well as the concept of our cherished ancestral lines. Indeed, did not the Mayflower have lynes to her billowing sayles? We have hosted two General Board of Assistants meetings in 1988 and 2004 during the governorships of Robert E. Davis and Robert J. Hanson respectively. Deputy Governor Edward Gray spearheaded the three day meeting in 1988 held at the Hotel DuPont while Wallace Thompson and Noel Kuhrt helped Governor Hanson lead and organize our effort to host in A gala 50th anniversary celebration was held in November 22, 2008 and hosted by Governor Christine Crossan at the Delaware National Country Club in Wilmington. y COMPACT DAY GUEST SPEAKER George P. Garmany, Jr. MD Boulder and also of the Colorado Society of Clinical Neurologists. In recognition for his long-term work with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, he received the prestigious Harold E. Williamson Award established by the COPIC Foundation to honor a physician who has volunteered extensive services in his or her community in Colorado. Dr. Garmany belongs to the Boulder Rotary Club and has served as a Scoutmaster. He continues to work with the Boy Scouts as a Board Member for the Longs Peak Council. Activities with the Scouts have allowed George and his family to enjoy the wonderful outdoors in Colorado and other nearby states. George s wife, Beverly, is a member of the Arapahoe Chapter of the DAR in Boulder, and George also belongs to the Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Connecticut. They both share a deep love of American History and are looking forward to working with the Mayflower Society at this special time in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. y

6 400th Anniversary Commemoration by Noel Kuhrt Our request to have the U.S. Mint issue a series of commemorative coins recognizing the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage has been most challenging. We failed to get the required 287 U.S. Representatives and 67 Senators to co-sponsor the bills during the 114th Congress, so they expired. The 115th Congress which expires in January, 2019 did not approve any coin bills for 2020 either for the Mayflower or any other anniversary. As soon as the 116th Congress begins, a House bill and Senate bill will be initiated and you will be notified what these bill numbers are. Then we must promptly ask Delaware Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester to co-sponsor the House bill and again ask Senators Carper and Coons to co-sponsor the Senate Bill. Our members living in other states can get contact details for their Rep at and enter your zipcode and Senators at and enter your state. Time is of the essence since only two commemorative coins are minted each year and there are other applications. An is so much quicker since it doesn t have to go through the 2 to 3 week security inspection required of postal letters. Please understand the passing of these 2019 bills and subsequent sale of coins will result in several million dollars benefiting the Mayflower Society at no cost to the taxpayer. GSMD will use its share to educate the public how Pilgrims helped shape western civilization. The 42nd General Congress will occur September 11 to 20, Special events will include a Pilgrim Progress parade to the Boston State House during the Massachusetts Governor s Salute to the 400th Anniversary. Reenactments of the Signing of the Mayflower Compact aboard the Mayflower II in Provincetown Harbor. A memorial service and wreath laying in the harbor followed by a luncheon and program at the base of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum. A Massachusetts Society Naturalization Ceremony, pending approval from the Federal Court in New Bedford, followed by the Pilgrim Progress from the Mayflower House to the Sarcophagus on Coles Hill then up Leyden Street to the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse for the official opening of the 42nd Congress where a deed ceremony will pass ownership of the Meetinghouse from the First Parish Church to GSMD. There will be numerous tour options during the ten day celebration. Every Mayflower descendant is welcome to attend and encouraged to acquire and wear Pilgrim period clothing. Information will be updated on the GSMD web site as it becomes available. Check back often. y Members and guests of the Maryland and Delaware Societies enjoyed a sail on the Kalmar Nyckel. The day was beautiful and the sail was amazing. 6

7 2018 General Board of Assistants Meeting 9/8/2018 in St. Charles, IL by Noel Kuhrt The General Board of Assistants meeting was opened by the premier flag presentation of the General Society Mayflower Guard which consisted of 8 members fully dressed in Pilgrim appropriate attire, armor and weapons. James Battles is the Commander and Noel Kuhrt is a charter member. 84 GBOA members represented 42 Societies with a total of 158 persons in attendance. Delaware was represented by DGG Noel Kuhrt, AGG Robert Hanson and Gov. David Bradford. Total GSMD membership is now 30,125. Gov. General George Garmany introduced Susan Belekewicz our new Executive Director. He reported the concrete balustrade on the Mayflower House had to be removed since the roof could no longer hold it. A lighter replacement is being installed. The $75 fee for membership application has not covered the actual cost of $145, which has been lowered by improved efficiency to $125. The Mayflower Journal will end in 2019 as an independent issue, but be included in the Quarterly. The 2020 life size memorial statue of William Bradford writing in his diary will also be offered in a bronze one foot size for individual purchase. Treasurer General Elizabeth Gaudreau reported our net assets are $11,093,000, an increase of $463,000 over Member-at-Large Lisa Pennington of Texas has bought a home on Leyden Street joining Past Gov. General Lea Filson who bought a home there last year. Barbara Gravely Welch received the General Society Silver Recognition Award for her dedicated and faithful service to the Delaware Society as Treasurer, Deputy Governor, Governor and current editor of its newsletter. She spearheaded a difficult project consolidating years of documents and artifacts, as well as rewriting job responsibilities for board members. She has given generously of her knowledge and experience to anything which needs to be done for the benefit of the Delaware Society, doing all with grace. The National Pilgrim Memorial Meeting House still needs our Delaware members to contribute to meet our $5,000 pledge. We are hopeful the Plymouth City Council will approve a requested $2.6 million grant at their October 20, 2018 meeting. Two proposed Constitution and By Law amendments allowing the Executive Committee to set dues and member application fees instead of requiring Constitution and By Law amendments to change the set fees were approved as a recommendation to the 2020 Congress. Only Congress can amend our Constitution and By Laws. In 2019 the GBOA meeting will be at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Denver, CO. There will be a Mayflower Float in the January 1, 2020 Rose Bowl Parade. The California Society hopes to have 52 Pilgrim attired marchers from any society. The nd Congress celebrating our 400th Anniversary will be September 11-20, 2020 in Plymouth, Boston and Provincetown. Dates and venues will be announced. Plymouth s 1620 Hotel will accept reservations in March 2019, 18 months before Congress. y 7

8 National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse by Robert Hanson, Assistant General By now you are all aware that the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) has entered into an agreement with the congregation of the Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse to raise money for renovations of the meetinghouse. The agreement places the meetinghouse and all its associated property in trust for three years. If the GSMD can raise $3 million in that time, the meetinghouse will be transferred to the GSMD. At the Board of Assistants meeting this year, we learned that several grants are being applied for that can help meet that goal as well as raise additional funds for this endeavor. It is estimated that $10 million will be needed to restore this 1897 building. As you know, the original meeting house was built by our ancestors in Since that time there has been two additional meetinghouses built. Since this was the original meetinghouse of the Pilgrims, many important documents and artifacts have been retained here, including the original treaty with Massasoit. I know you can appreciate the importance of keeping this meetinghouse and associated artifacts for posterity. For these reasons, the Delaware Society has pledged to raise $5000 for the renovations. Every other society has pledged the same, and as we learned many have already met their pledge and more. I am asking each of you to contribute what you can for this important cause. Box 3207, Plymouth, MA There is a little-known fact that pertains to individuals who are required to take a minimum distribution from their traditional IRA. A donation made to a qualified charity can be excluded from income if it is paid directly from the IRA. I recently did this myself and it only required completion of a short form. You do NOT need to contribute the whole distribution but can designate any amount. This is one way to donate that helps with taxes for those who take the standard deduction and can t itemize. Contact your Financial Advisor for more information. y LIBRARY REPORT 8 by Christina Lassen Our Library Committee chairperson, Ann Happoldt, died unexpectedly in April. The new chairperson, Tina Lassen, has been visiting the five libraries which have been receiving the Mayflower Families silver books as they have been released by Plymouth. The five libraries are: South Coastal Public Library, Delaware Public Archives, Dover Public Library, Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library, and Delaware Historical Society Library. When the director of the S. Coastal Library weeds out her books in the winter, her set of books may be transferred to another library, possibly Lewes or Hockessin. In addition, the BOA would like to offer children s and young adults books to as many libraries in Delaware as possible. We have a number of suggestions, which we need to read and check for accuracy. 9 SPRING RECEPTION HELD AT HISTORIC HALE-BRYNES HOUSE by David Bradford On May 20th the 2018 Spring Reception was held at the historic Hale-Byrnes House, 606 Stanton-Christiana Rd. in Wilmington. Twenty-six members, spouses, juniors and guests gathered at 3 p.m. to enjoy an afternoon of indoor and outdoor fellowship. A banquet of fresh fruit, home-made desserts, hand-squeezed lemonade, tea and coffee was enjoyed by all prior to a short society business meeting. The highlight of the reception was the PowerPoint presentation shared by local historian, site curator and former SMDD governor Kim R. Burdick in which Kim discussed the history and significance of the house and during the Revolutionary War and General Washington s 1777 Philadelphia Campaign. Governor Bradford surprised attendees with a banjo rendition of Cripple Creek which many were amazed to learn was the original name of the White Clay Creek that flows behind the Hale-Brynes House. Several Junior Members and guests enjoyed learning to play colonial games on the outdoor patio. The meeting ended at 5 p.m. amid one of several sudden downpours that day, but the spirit of the meeting and pleasure of the gathering was not dampened. y 9

10 MAYFLOWER SOCIETY AUDIO TOUR Listen to the history of the Mayflower Society House, an 18th-century mansion of great beauty and dignity. Not only has this home seen three centuries of influential Plymouth families, but it stands as a symbol of unity, acting as the national headquarters of our organization, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants: 10 A LOOK BACK It was on a Saturday, the 3rd of October, 1992 when Mary Lee Sutton Merrill, a long time member of the Delaware Society traveled to Southampton, England for the dedication of the plaque on the Pilgrim Monument in memory of her ancestor, Edward Doty. Her sister, the late Suzanne Sutton Scott accompanied her. They were greeted by Alta Doty Brook, a Doty Society member, who escorted them to the site of the Pilgrim Monument. At the site was the Mayor of Southampton and the colorful Town Crier who rang the bell before the Mayor read a proclamation recognizing the special day. Then Mary Lee, the Doty Society Founder, spoke on the life of Edward Doty. The plaque was already in place on the monument. What a wonderful day and memory for Mary Lee and her sister. y

11 Pilgrim Biographies This is the 4th in a series of 6 to acquaint the reader with some knowledge of each of the signers of the Mayflower Compact. WILLIAM BRADFORD William Bradford, son of William and Alice (Hanson) Bradford, was baptized on 19 March 1589 at Austerfield, Yorkshire, England. He joined the Separatist group at the age of 17 and went to Holland when that group fled England. He married Dorothy May in Amsterdam on 10 December 1613, by whom he had one child. This child was left in Holland when William and Dorothy embarked on the Speedwell and transferred to the Mayflower at Southampton. William was one of the forty-one signers of the Mayflower Compact, his name appearing second on the list after John Carver. Dorothy May Bradford drowned in Cape Cod Harbor on 7 December 1620, an event which has never been authentically explained. William served as Governor of Plymouth Colony from 1621 until 1657, with the exception of five years. From 1630 to 1650 he wrote the famous History of Plimouth Plantation. William married widow Alice (Carpenter) Southworth on 14 August 1623 shortly after she arrived at Plymouth on the Anne. By this marriage there were three children. Descent from William Bradford has been proven through only two of his children, William and Joseph. William Bradford died on 19 May His will and inventory of estate are on record at Plymouth. Alice died in April FRANCIS EATON It is believed that Francis Eaton, a carpenter, was one of the London contingent who boarded the Mayflower at Southampton. He was accompanied by his wife, Sarah, and an infant son, Samuel. The ancestry of Francis and Sarah, and place of origin, is unknown. He was one of the forty-one signers of the Mayflower Compact. Sarah died during the general sickness of the first winter at Plymouth. Francis subsequently married Mrs. Carver s maid, name unknown, but she died shortly thereafter. He married again in 1624 or 1625, his third wife being Christian Penn who had come over on the Anne in By her he had three children, Rachel, Benjamin, and one whose name is unknown. Francis died during an epidemic in He left no will, but an inventory of his estate listed tools of his trade. RICHARD WARREN It is believed that Richard Warren was born about 1578 in England, but nothing has been conclusively established concerning his ancestry or the exact location of his birth. When Richard Warren sailed on the Mayflower from Southampton he left behind his wife and five daughters, Mary, Anna, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Abigail behind. He was accorded the title of Mr which was used in those times to distinguish someone because of birth or achievement.
