2 Spend a day at a butterfly house. Soft wings lutter. Do they tickle? What designs do you see? Butter lies are fun! Nurse Nancy ixes broken dolls. She patches them. She ixes hair, eyes, and teeth. She even sews new clothes. Do you have a doll that needs help? The doll hospital is open. TEACHING TIP Visit a tropical butterfly house if you can. The rooms will be hot and damp. That s how the butterflies that live inside like it. They will sip juice from oranges that are cut open. They might even land on your face! God created thousands and thousands of different kinds of butterflies. Many of these live in South America. Nancy Korsak has always loved dolls. Her grandfather taught her how to work with her hands. An aunt showed her how to sew. So now she repairs broken and damaged dolls. Some dolls are worth thousands of dollars because they are antiques. Others are playthings that have been scuffed or broken. 3 Mr. S. gets used bars of soap from hotels. Workers grind it up. They shape it into new bars. Then they give it to people who have no soap. Soap kills germs. Who can say, I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin? Proverbs 20:9 TEACHING TIP Washing your hands with soap kills germs. But many people have little or no soap. Shawn Seipler learned that millions of used bars of soap from hotels around the world are thrown away every day. So he started a company to collect all that used soap. I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God. Isaiah 45:5 1 God s Big WORLD July/August 2015 TIP Yabusame (ya-boo-sah-mih) is Japanese horse archery. It was started over 900 years ago. The warriors wanted to please their gods. The archer steers his horse with his knees. He holds the bow in one hand and pulls out an arrow with the other. He aims and shoots at a target all while he is galloping by. He does this three times. His shout means darkness and light. 6 The air lifts them. The pilot s seat Gliders look like little planes. But they have no motors. They are held up by the wind. They look like they are loating! You yourselves have seen how I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to myself. Exodus 19:4 Gliders are long. 2 JTIP About 24 pilots from four countries brought their gliders to Athens, Tennessee, in windy April. They came to see who could stay in the air the longest and who could fly the highest. The contest lasted two weeks. Some days it rained so the gliders could not fly. It was too windy on some other days. But the pilots worked together on good weather days. Their gliders floated on the air. They had lots of fun. A plane tows the glider into the sky. AP Photos

7 What a big model! No one has ever seen this elephant. But people made a model of one. How can they do that? With God are wisdom and might. Job 12:13 TEACHING TIP No straight-tusked elephants are living on the Earth now. But people have found the elephant s bones in the ground. Artists in Germany studied those bones. They made bones like them. Then they added muscles to the bones. And they covered everything with elephant-like skin. Lastly, they added the straight tusks. Does the model look real to you? 9 Hubble is 25! 3 LE S S O N It is as big as a school bus. But it loats out in space. It takes pictures of stars. The giant telescope shows us God s might. God seals up the stars and stretched out the heavens marvelous things beyond number. Job 9: 8-10 AP Photo TEACHING TIP The Hubble Space Telescope (above) just turned 25 years old. It is 350 miles above us. It has circled Earth 137,000 times. And it has taken photos over one million of them of stars and galaxies that we cannot see. Scientists think Hubble will keep working until They plan to have a new telescope in space by then. God s Big WORLD July/August

10 Remember the former things of old. Isaiah 46:9 It is a new, old ship. People long ago fought a war to make our country free. A ship from France helped in that war. A new ship has been built. It is just like the old one. It sailed to America too. 2 July/August 2 TIP The ship Hermoine (air-mee-oh-nee) helped America to win the Revolutionary War. The Marquis de Lafayette sailed on the ship from France 235 years ago. He brought money and supplies to help the American fighters. Now an exact copy (replica) of the ship has been built. The new, old ship sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States this spring. Did you see it?

11 Dogs and cats show off. Tank is a bulldog. He s all sniff and drool. He likes snow lakes, And turtle babies too. This cat is named Gaya. Such big ears and green eyes! What is she thinking? Will she win a prize? You satisfy the desire of every living thing. Psalm 145:16 TEACHING TIP Bulldog Tank won this year s Beautiful Bulldog contest at Drake University in Iowa. He became the mascot for an outdoor track meet there. He likes to eat snow and to watch his owner s pet turtles. Gaya was one of about 250 cats at a cat show in Romania. She is a Devon Rex. 13 God made the wind. Strong wind, clouds, and rain can make a big spinning tube of air. That is a tornado. Grownups will teach you what to do if one is near. 4 LE S S O N He brings forth the wind from His storehouses. Jeremiah 10:13 TEACHING TIP Tornadoes can happen at any time of the year. But most tornadoes form between May and July in the United States. People in states where tornadoes happen know to watch the sky and to listen for warnings. If a tornado is in your area, go to the basement or a room with no windows on the lowest floor. Do not open windows. And stay indoors until it is safe. 14 Tuah needed a mama. This little guy s mama died. Who would take care of him? Zoo keepers did! It was hard work. Now his big sister has taken over. Ask the beasts and they will tell you that the life of every living thing is in the hand of the Lord. See Job 12: TEACHING TIP The little orangutan is named Tuah (TOO-wah). Zookeepers took turns caring for him. Baby orangutans hold onto mama s fur all the time even when they sleep. Keepers wore a furry vest. They did their best to act like an orangutan mama. Then they taught Tuah s sister what to do. Now she takes good care of him.

15 Friends help one another. Two friends in China work together. Mr. H. cannot see. Mr. W. has no arms. But they have planted thousands of trees. Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. Ecclesiastes 4:9 TEACHING TIP The two men have been friends since they were boys. One lost his eyesight and the other his arms in accidents. The blind man climbs trees and takes cuttings for planting. The armless man digs holes and carries water with his feet. 17 They fly like the wind. 5 LE S S O N They swoop and dive and climb high. They are called Jetmen. They wear wings with jet motors. What flying fun! The flyers use parachutes to land safely. But he wanted to do more than fly in planes; he wanted to be a plane. So he invented a jet pack with wings to wear on his back. He is called the Jetman. Now he has a Jetman partner. In May, he and Vince Reffet soared and dived above the desert and the city of Dubai. Videos of their flight can be found on the Internet. God s Big WORLD July/August

18 These goats have long, matted hair. But what is hiding under that mess? It is soft hair! It is a goat surprise. People clean and spin it. The yarn makes fine clothes. All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goat s hair. Exodus 35:26 TEACHING TIP Certain goats in Afghanistan shed the thick hair next to their skin in the spring. Farmers used to burn that hair. Now they have learned that they can clean, wash, and spin it. Then they have some of the finest cashmere yarn in the world! Selling it helps the poor farmers to care for their families. 2

19 It is Mud Day! Start with a stick. Add your big toe. Then slip or slide And just let go! Feel the cool muck Cover your skin. Squishy, splashy, Time to dive in! TEACHING TIP Eleven years ago, two teachers started International Mud Day. They wanted young children (and grownups) to enjoy the outdoors by playing in mud. People all over the world choose one day in each of their countries to play games or just slip and slide in the mud. What a mess! What fun! For the Lord takes pleasure in His people. They are warm in warm water. But moon ish are always warm. Even in very cold water. Photos: NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center A NOAA biologist holds an opah caught off the California coast. Animals are either coldblooded or warm-blooded. Warm-blooded animal bodies stay the same temperature all of the time. We always thought all fish were cold-blooded. They change temperature depending on the temperature of the water. Now scientists have learned that moonfish ( opah ) are able to make heat as they swim. Their bodies stay nearly nine degrees warmer than that icy water! God s Big WORLD July/August TEACHING TIP

22 Turn the lights out. New York City sparkles at night. Lights in office buildings are on all night. Should they be shut off when no one is there? Many say, Yes. TEACHING TIP People who live in New York City love it. And they love all the bright lights and sparkle at night. But a city council member believes all tall buildings should have the lights turned off after midnight if no one is inside. He agrees that the Empire State Building and a few others could stay lit all night. Will his idea soon become a law? 2 I am the light of the world. 23 Young bear had to leave his mama. Where would he go? He climbed a tree in someone s yard. Is that a good place for a little bear? There is a bear in the tree! The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together. Isaiah 11:7 AP Photos TEACHING TIP This young bear wandered into a yard in Marksville, Louisiana. He was scared. So he climbed a tree and made a nest. Children and a dog live in the house. It is not safe for a bear to live there. A game warden came. She caught him in a cage. She gave him an ear tag and a collar. She will be able to tell when young bear finds his forever home. God s Big WORLD July/August

25 Dolls are not for this. 7 LE S S O N Some people in Japan had a fair. They got used dolls. Then they prayed to the dolls. They think the dolls kept children safe and well. TIP Many people in Japan do not worship God. They worship things rocks, trees, or animals, for example. One day in May is set aside as a Festival of Repayment of Kindness, or Doll s Day. People collect dolls children have had. They pray to the dolls. They thank the dolls for protecting their young owners. Then they burn the dolls. Pray for Christians to tell the Japanese about Jesus. 26 They can dive. Gannet birds are big and noisy. I know all the birds of the hills. Psalm 50:11 Do you see their blue eyes? They fly high. Then they dive deep. Up they come with fish! 2 TEACHING TIP Lambert s Bay Bird Island is in South Africa. It is one of only six spots in the world where Cape gannet birds come to have their babies. The birds look something like swans but they have loud, shrieking calls. They also soar up into the air and then dive at 60 miles per hour straight down into the water to catch sardines.

27 They keep finding more and more. Two farmers dug a well. CRACK! What did their shovels hit? It was a clay soldier. And there are thousands more! How many will there be in all? He shall trample on rulers as on mortar, as the potter treads clay. Isaiah 41:25 TIP Two Chinese farmers made an unbelievable discovery about 40 years ago. They found clay (called terracotta )soldiers buried underground. China s first emperor, Quin (chin), wanted to be protected after he died. He had the statues made and placed around his tomb. The soldiers all stand at attention. Each one looks different. Many hold weapons. There are even bronze chariots. Archeologists are still uncovering soldiers. There are over 8,000 so far. 29 8 LE S S O N Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? Job 39:19 Horses do the hard work. Horses come to the island in spring. Up and down hills they go. They pull people in carts. They work hard all summer. TIP AP Photo Mackinac Island is in Michigan. Many people visit there each summer. There is a rule that no cars are allowed on the island. Every spring about 500 horses are brought from mainland farms to the island. They pull guests in carriages, food in carts, and trash in wagons. Then they return to their farms for winter. 30 Cooks have used it for a long time. Yellow, green, red, and blue bowls. Does Grandma still have some? They are made of Pyrex glass. It is 100 years old. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10 2 TIP In the photo, the celebration included the world s largest Pyrex measuring cup. The Corning Glass Works makes Pyrex glass. Its cookware will not break in a hot oven. And cooks have been using it for 100 years. The company first made clear glass pie and baking dishes. Then came clear measuring cups with red markings (does your mom have one?) and colored bowls. Corning made the world s largest measuring cup to celebrate Pyrex s 100th birthday. AP Photos

31 It is bigger than a bike. Electric tuk-tuks are coming to Denver. People can make all kinds of things in this world because God made us to be like Him. Read Genesis 1:27. Call it a bajay. Call it a posy. This little trike Could make life rosy. It has a motor. It s not a truck. Soon you might ride A rickshaw tuk-tuk. TIP AP Photos In the photo, taxi drivers wait for riders in Bangkok, Thailand. The motorized rickshaws with three wheels move people from one place to another in busy cities around the world. They have many different names. But tuk-tuk is the most popular. Now a company wants to run tuk-tuks in downtown Denver, Colorado. The little trikes have electric motors and will not make a tuk-tuk sound. God s Big WORLD July/August
