Theme: Trusting and following the Good Shepherd/overcoming mob mentality Characters: MALE 1 (M1): False Prophet MALE 2 (M2): Follower 4, Bill, Doug, Bob, Mike. WOMAN 1 (W1): Follower 1, June, Sherry, Cheryl. WOMAN 2(W2): Follower 2, Diane, Becky. WOMAN 3 (W3): Follower 3, Freda Setting: Bare stage Running Time: 6 minutes (All the players stand shoulder to shoulder in a straight line, downstage, and face the audience.) ALL: We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way. (M1 moves upstage and center of the group. The others turn to face him and then sit down on the floor.) M1: I am the way. I am the truth. I am the light. W1: Enlighten us, Exalted One, Keeper of the Higher Space. W2: We will follow you... W3: To our death. (ALL concur, Yes, to our death... to our death, etc.) M2: Keep us from the coming evil.

2 M1: The end is near. The day and the hour have been revealed to me in a dream. W3: Show us the way. M1: We will wait for the arrival of the mother ship when the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars. W1: It is the sign. M1: We will build the field and they will come. M2: It is our destiny. M1: We are the champions. W2: We are the world. (ALL lift their hands upward and freeze momentarily. They move out of the scene by going back to their original line.) ALL: We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own... (On the word own M1/FALSE PROPHET starts to bleat like a sheep. The other members are noticeably affected but are not verbal about the transformation. M1/FALSE PROPHET begins to wander around the stage to a predetermined location USL. The other players exchange confused glances momentarily and then begin the next scene. During the scenes the players that move into the USL area [the sheep pen ] turn their backs to the audience and freeze. All the players begin to move DSR.) JUNE: I have been all over this town looking for that stupid toy. DIANE: Me too. I ve been to ToyCoup, Toys-4-U, Joys of Toys... FREDA: I got the last one at Mal-Wart on Tuesday. DIANE: You re kidding! BILL: She had it on back order for a month and then tracked the shipment from San Jose! Made me go down there and camp out in front of the store so we could be the first ones in there at 8 A.M.! FREDA: I m glad Bill was there. It was like a feeding frenzy. JUNE: Mary Printer got in an brawl at Gyro over one she found hid behind the Barbies. The lady who hid it came back to get it while she was checking out. DIANE (to FREDA): Would you consider selling yours? JUNE (to FREDA): I ll give you twice what you paid. (DIANE and JUNE begin to argue.) FREDA: No way. BILL: How much?

3 (They get into a heated argument among themselves and then freeze momentarily. They move out of the scene by going back to their original line.) ALL (less M1): We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has... (On the word has W3/FREDA starts to bleat like a sheep. The other members are noticeably affected but are not verbal about the transformation. W3/FREDA begins to wander around the stage to a predetermined location USL with M1/FALSE PROPHET who has begun to bleat again. The other players exchange confused glances momentarily and then begin the next scene. When W3/FREDA is in the sheep pen, the bleating stops. This convention will be used to transition between the scenes. SHERRY, BECKY, and DOUG move DSL.) SHERRY: So, what s the name of it? BECKY: Whispers at Night by Madeline Rominsky. SHERRY: What s it about? BECKY: An alien life force that takes over the rodent population and eats half of Manhattan. SHERRY: That doesn t sound very good. BECKY: Whitney Opry recommended it on her book club. DOUG: They say making that book club is an automatic top spot on the New York Times Best-Seller list. BECKY: I hear a publisher will up the printing 500,000 copies on the spot with a recommendation like that. DOUG: I d like to have clout like that. BECKY: She s smart. I like her style. SHERRY: I ll probably get it. BECKY: If she says it s good... (BECKY, SHERRY, and DOUG freeze momentarily and then move out of the scene by going back to their original line.) ALL (less M1, W3): We all, like sheep, have gone astray... (On the word astray W2/BECKY starts to bleat like a sheep. This prompts the sheep in the pen [USL] to begin bleating. The other members are noticeably affected but are not verbal about the transformation. W2/BECKY begins to wander around the stage to the pen with M1 and W3. The other players exchange confused glances momentarily and then begin the next scene. BOB and CHERYL move SR.) BOB: Have you seen the movie Chiffon at Night? CHERYL: With Kim Jerry?

4 BOB: I saw it last night with Carolyn. We howled. CHERYL: Good? BOB: Hysterical. CHERYL: What s it rated? BOB: R. Some language and a little sex. But, hey, that s everywhere these days. You have to see it. CHERYL: Paper gave it a good review. It made $32 million over the weekend. BOB: Everyone saw it. CHERYL: Maybe I can get Bill to go with me tonight. BOB: Bill? You two are getting pretty serious, aren t you? CHERYL: We re starting to talk about marriage. BOB: Marriage? Wow, that was... quick. Where s he work? CHERYL: He s an accountant downtown. I don t remember the practice. He says he ll be a partner in a couple of years. BOB: Is he a Christian? (CHERYL shakes her head.) Oh. CHERYL: I keep praying that the Lord will use me to help change him. BOB: But you re going ahead with the wedding plans anyway? CHERYL (defensively): It s not like he s such a bad guy. He treats me well. I m 38, and I don t have much more time to wait on God. I love him... I know God wants what s best for me, but the opportunities don t come around so much anymore... (CHERYL begins to cry and falls into BOB s arms. They momentarily freeze and then move into their transition.) BOB and CHERYL: We all, like sheep... (On the word sheep W1/CHERYL starts to bleat like a sheep. This prompts the sheep in the pen [USL] to begin bleating. M2/BOB looks at her momentarily. W1/CHERYL begins to wander around the stage to the pen with M1, W2, and W3. When W1/CHERYL joins them they turn and freeze. MIKE turns downstage and folds his hands to pray.) MIKE:... And, Lord, I ask that You would make a way for me to have this job. You know that I need it. My family needs me to have it... now. Blind their eyes to the education requirements and help them overlook the lack of job experience. Make a way. I trust You. Grant me the job and I ll never ask for anything again. I ll be sure to give You all the glory. (MIKE freezes momentarily and then lifts his head.) ALL:... Aaaaaaallllll... Aaaaaaalll. (The other players in the pen begin to bleat and they all wander and drift offstage.)
