4 Introduction: I was always interested in the Rich List, which came out yearly. I eagerlyperused through the contents taking everything in. I was always fascinated by the people, how they obtained their wealth; and their stories. Then I wondered how this could it relate to pets. This is the main reason why I have put this report together and I was astounded by the amount of money which had been lavished on some of the pets. 5 The Pet Rich List The World s Richest Pets According to research by Washington University; between 12% and 27% of pet owners, leave some provision for their pets in their wills. This is to ensure that their pets have a comfortable life, even when they have passed away. Some of these pets earn large sums of money, through a trust. This has become so popular that around thirty-nine U.S states have some statutes outlining this type of pet s trust. The trusts are usually in the range of $30,000, but there are others that inherit millions of dollars. Listed below are some of the pets which have been given an inheritance, larger than most of us, will earn during our lifetime. 1). Gunther the German Shepherd - $102.2 Million: It was in July 2002 that singer Madonna sold her eight-bedroom villa in Miami for $5.7 million, to agents that represented the dog Gunther IV. Gunther had inherited his fortune from his father Gunther III, who had been the sole heir of an estate from his owner, a German countess Karlotta Leienstein. She had left $49 million to her dog when she died in Gunther IV soon made headlines, when he paid $ 1,140 to buy a truffle in Turin. He appeared in person with two of his domestic staff during the auction. He is also said to own estates in Bahamas, Italy and Germany. A website that has been dedicated to this most pampered dog shows him living in true playboy mansion style. All Rights Reserved. 5

6 Gunther IV has a picture of himself surrounded by bronze girls in gold dresses and handsome men in wearing white jeans. He also has another picture slashing about in a blue swimming pool, as girls in string bikinis look on adoringly. 2). Kalu the Chimpanzee - $ 45.6 Million: Elderly ladies can change their will from time to time, just to keep her family on their toes. Well it is this case that the wife of Frank O Neill, who was a former Australian swimming champion. She decided to leave her fortune of $45.6 million, to her pet chimp, Kalu and did this while her husband was away. Patricia O Neill was the daughter of countess of Kenmore and she became close to the chimp, when he found her tied to a tree outside of the Argentinian consul-general, in war-torn Zaire. She took the chimp to her estate near Cape Town in South Africa. Initially the animal appeared terrified and traumatized, but later on was able, to settle in well. Mr. O Neill says that every time he swam in the swimming pool the chimp would run up and down and hit him on the head, but other than that they had a great relationship. Toby Rimes - $40 million: This poodle is owned by Ella Wendell, who is the last sister of the New York family, that amassed a lot of wealth in the gilded age. Despite the fact that 2,300 people claim to be heirs to her fortune; as well as her real estate holdings, which are worth $40 million. When she died in 1931, no one got the money and it was passed on to the poodle. Toby was only able to outlive his owner by a few months, according to a report by New Jersey s Drew University, which was one of the charitable institutions that benefitted from the estate. 4). Oprah s Dogs - 30 million: The television talks show host who is worth around $2.5 billion, has set aside a whopping $30 million for her dogs. According to her, she would want the dogs to have a good life after she passes away. 5). Gigoo - $15 million: This hen was owned by British publishing giant Miles Blackwell. 8 He died in 2001 and gave much of his fortune to charity, but left $15 million to his beloved chicken. 6). Blackie - $13 Million: This cat happens to be mentioned in the Guinness book of records as the wealthiest cat ever. The cat inherited an estate worth $13 million when his owner who was a British antiques dealer by the name Ben Rea, died in ). Tommaso - $13million: This is yet another ultra-rich cat. It was a stray which was found in Rome and taken in by an elderly Italian woman, called Maria Assunta. She died in 2011 and left the cat a fortune of $13million. Assunta s former nurse was left to take care of the cat. Assunta gave orders that the cat was to be cuddled and for sure, the money was enough to buy more than enough cuddles for the cat. 8). Conchita - $11.3 Million: The Chihuahua was described the most pampered dog in the world. This was even before her owner Gali Posner, who was a Miami socialite, passed away in 2010 and left her a $3 million trust. All Rights Reserved. 8

The dog was also a regular at the Miami nightclubs. 9). Frankie, Ani and Pepe - $10.2 million: The dogs and a cat have a whopping $ 10.2 million which was left by a mystery benefactor. The money was left to Lenise Patrick to take care of his dog and two cats. They live together in a $11.4 million home in San Diego and they receive an annual trust fund of $114,000. Patrick is there to ensure they get what they need. 10). Chunmun - $8 million: Chunmun happens to be one of the world s most spoilt monkeys. He comes in after Kalu the Congolese chimp. He was purchased in 2005 by an Indian couple at $8 million. They happened to be interfaith, which was not acceptable by their families. The couple says that their business started doing well when they adopted Chunmun. Chunmun eats home cooked meals and receives a lot of pampering. All Rights Reserved. 9

10 11). Trouble - The Maltese Terrier - $6.84 Million: Trouble was owned by Leona Helmsley, who was also known as the queen of mean. She died at the age of 87. She was known to be very difficult to work for, but she also was known for treating her snowy white Maltese terrier, in the best way possible. The dog was fed human food which was served on silver and china trays. For Trouble, everything was very elegant and had to be the best. In fact he had to be fed by the maids, using their fingers and if they did not, the dog would not eat. Trouble was left a fortune of $8.5 million and Helmsley said the dog was to be buried beside her, when she died. 12). Pontiac - $5 million: The dog is owned by actress Betty White who is 90. During her free time, she is often with her beloved golden retriever, known as Pontiac. Betty has set $5 million trust fund to take care of Pontiac and her other pets. All Rights Reserved

According to him, Choupette hates other animals as well as children. The cat has two personal maids and has earned money through her modelling gigs. Among these were cars in Germany and also for Japanese beauty products. 14). Tina and Kate the Collie Crosses - $513,000: Nora Hardwell who died a day before her 90th birthday, ensured that her two dogs would live their lives to the fullest. The dogs were left to run her home and five acres of land in Peasedown, St. John. She also left $513,000 to be spent on them. In her will she stipulated that a caterer was to be employed and their sole duty was to take care of the two dogs and to keep the house clean. 15). Jasper The Mongrel - $ 211,500: Jasper is a great story of rags to riches. He spent his early days in the Battersea dogs home in London. All Rights Reserved. 11

12 He has a glossy black coat and a big pink tongue that attracted heiress Diana Myburgh, who rescued him and took care of him until she died at the age of 74 in She left a trust fund of $28,500 to Jasper and her other dog, which was a whippet called Jason. When Jason passed away, the inheritance was taken on by Jasper. After that, the dog lived in splendor at the Mansell house in Somerset, together with Sir Benjamin Slade, who was the son in-law of Mrs. Myburgh. He invested Jaspers inheritance on the stock market which seen it increase three times. Benjamin says that Jasper pays him $12.5 a day to take care of him. 16). Tinker The Cat - $114,000: Tinker befriended an elderly widow by the name Margaret Laynes, who died in the year 2003 at the age of 89. The cat was eight years of age at that time. In the terms of the will, Margaret Laynes stated that the black cat would run her three-bedroom house in Harrow. She also left a $114,000 trust fund under the cat s name. She also allocated trustees that were to deliver food and milk to the cat every day. She died in June 1999 and left a $67.3 million estate. Maureen Harding who was a housekeeper for Miss Foyle, said that she had become a cat lover from the time that she was left with nine cats. Only four are still left. She was left to live in a cottage which was later sold. The money used to buy a new home on Essex to be used as the feline home. Porgy the oldest, sleeps in Harding s bedroom. Pride and joy are tabbies and Ronnie is the youngest. They are all part of this big family. Ronnie is said to be a bit of a bully, but despite this Harding says the cats are real sweethearts. 18). Silverstone The Tortoise - $19,000: he tortoise is aged 50 and he got his name when he set down on a lawn on grand pix day and made its way across the grass. Silverstone was another beneficiary of Christina Foyle. The amount of $11,400 was left to handyman Anthony and his wife Ellen, to look after her six tortoises plus a collie cross. Later the collie cross died and the five tortoises were left in Anthony s care. Silverstone was left with former housekeeper, Miss Harding. All Rights Reserved. 13

14 19). Top Cat and Matilda - $11,400 each: The two cats became aristocrats when their owner who was a retired librarian in Aberdeen, died in 2004, leaving $11,400 for the care of each of her cats. She was a minister s daughter and valued her creatures comfort. She travelled by bus to everywhere, but she felt that her cats needed more than that. 20). Grumpy Cat: Grumpy cat became the internet s favorite kitty in The pet seemed to have an ever-depressed frown, which helped it net a Christmas movie, coffee brand and nearly I million followers on Instagram. he cat s worth has been estimated at $ 1 million and even $100 million, but the owner has said this has been an exaggeration.
