We will also be offering a two-day and a one day workshop in the technique. At last count there were three slots remaining in the 1 day workshop on Friday the 14th. 2 Editor s Bench The President s Page By By Bob Peter Parson Bills THE END IN MIND vs. TURN, TURN, TURN So it was a little early for me to have put my snow thrower into storage, as I pondered doing in last month s Presidents Page. The surprises of living in Northern Virginia. On the last full weekend in March the Woodworking Show returned to the Dulles Expo center. Just as with last year, our sister club, CAW, had a booth at the show. And again, like last year, they didn t have enough volunteers to fill all of the time slots. CA Savoy ed me to ask if I would send an invitation to members of CAT to try to fill the remaining slots and, again like last year, CAT members came through. We had several volunteers and ended up with plenty of folks to run the turning demos and crowd discussions with folks. Thanks for all of you who volunteered. At the show, turners demonstrated making pens and tops on two mini lathes, talked with visitors to the booth, and handed out completed pens and tops that were the targets of the demonstrations. It was a lot of fun. We also had a number of CAT club members stop by the booth as visitors to the show. As an additional bonus, two awards from the show were given to one CAT member and one CAW member. Joe Zadareky, President of CAW, won the Educator s Choice Award, and our own Vice President Charlie Wortman won the People s Choice Award. I have attached pictures of both turners and their respective pieces. Impressive! Charlie informed me that he will be bringing his piece to Show and Tell at our April meeting; thanks, Charlie, and Congratulations! The Virginia Woodturning Symposium Committee met on Sunday, March 26, at the Richmond Woodcraft for a planning meeting for the

As in 2016 we will have the Symposium at ExpoLand in Fishersville, VA, and will have the main building, including the Annex, as we did in Although I was unable to make the meeting, Mark Kaplan was there representing CAT, and I spoke with the Symposium Committee President, Richard Landreth, and gave him the results of the professional turners preferences that you all expressed at the poll I did at our March meeting. Jimmy Clewes was the hands down preference of CAT, along with Mike Mahoney as a close second. In other news we have arranged a meeting with the CAT Board and club member experts in platforms as we try to address the fact that our club growth has meant that we have outgrown our first system and, likely, the current one as well. I am hopeful that we will be able to improve our communications platforms with CAT members soon, and that we will be able to serve all of CAT more effectively and efficiently. Thanks for listening! 5 March Demo By Dave Robinson Dave Swiger did an excellent demo and lecture on finishing. From what I heard afterwards three of the most important take-aways were: 1. How to use the metallic patina paint from Craft Supplies. You had to be there and you ll have to actually do it a few times to master it. 2. Dave was high on the Makita sander with the paddle grip and the wave edge blue sanding pads available from Mike Sorge. Also, don t forget to use the sacrificial intermediate pad. 3. 16 CAT s Mentoring Program It s Not Just For New Turners! O ur Mentoring Coordinator, Dale Bright, is looking for volunteers to be mentors for our CAT Mentoring Program. Dale would also like to hear from members interested in pairing up with a mentor in any of the areas of interest listed below, or simply for general turning skills enhancement. CAT has an enormous pool of turning talent in its membership. Whatever your level of turning experience, working with a mentor can be a wonderful way to explore new techniques and try out specialized turning tools and equipment. Working as a mentor is rewarding in itself, and often leads to enduring friendships! Sign-up forms for those who are willing to serve as a mentor or who would like to be matched up with one will be available at the next regular meeting. You may also contact Dale Bright via at mentoring@catoctinareaturners.org. Please include your name, address, phone number, and address; also indicate your experience level (i.e., Beginner, Intermediate, or Experienced) when requesting a mentor. We will try to match interested individuals with someone who lives reasonably close whenever possible. Here are some of the areas of interest identified so far, but feel free to mention others!
