2 WHY IS A BALANCED INTESTINAL MICROFLORA IMPORTANT? Your pet s intestinal health relies on the balance of the intestinal microflora the balance between the beneficial bacteria and the harmful bacteria found within the intestinal tract. Having a balanced and healthy intestinal microflora is crucial to the wellbeing of your pet. A balanced bacterial microflora helps to keep your pet healthy by stimulating the body s immune system the ability to fight off infection digesting food nutrients producing vitamins and fatty acids WHAT MIGHT CAUSE IMBALANCES IN THE INTESTINAL MICROFLORA? Imbalances can occur with stresses such as: illness antibiotic usage traveling kenneling dietary change, especially a sudden change Your pet could show signs including loose stool decreased appetite vomiting WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS, AND HOW CAN THEY HELP? Probiotics are beneficial live bacteria that when ingested in sufficient amounts help to support the pet s intestinal and overall health. Probiotics help reestablish the balance in the intestinal microflora. Prebiotics are foods that stimulate the growth of good bacteria in the gut whereas probiotics are live bacteria that provide health benefits, when consumed. WHAT ARE PREBIOTICS? Prebiotics are complex carbohydrates that can be used as a food source for the probiotics, especially within the large intestine. This helps to support the growth of the probiotics within the intestinal tract and helps them to compete against the harmful bacteria for colonization of the intestines. WHAT IS PROVIABLE -FORTE? Proviable-Forte from Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc. is a line of multi-strain probiotic products that also contain prebiotics. There are two product lines: Proviable-Forte capsules and Proviable-Forte Kits which contain Proviable-KP paste and Proviable-Forte Capsules. Both product lines contain seven strains of probiotic microorganisms with two prebiotics, and the KP paste also contains kaolin and pectin. Kaolin and pectin are natural ingredients that help to firm loose stools by coating and soothing the gastrointestinal tract and help to support normal intestinal function.

3 WHEN WOULD PROVIABLE -FORTE PRODUCTS BE GIVEN? KP paste and Proviable-Forte capsules can be given when your pet experiences loose stool due to an intestinal imbalance (stomach upset). KP paste is a tasty paste that can be given by mouth to the pet to help form stools while both the paste and the capsules together help to reestablish healthy intestinal balance. Proviable-Forte capsules can also be given during and after antibiotic usage and before stressful conditions, such as traveling and kenneling, to help support intestinal health. The capsules can be used long-term as recommended by your veterinarian for certain gastrointestinal conditions. WHEN SHOULD I SEE AN IMPROVEMENT IN MY PET S CONDITION? For sudden episodes of loose stool during which the pet otherwise appears normal, KP paste and Proviable-Forte capsules should be started at the same time. KP paste should be given for hours to help to form the stools; however, some pets may respond in a shorter period of time. Proviable-Forte capsules should be continued daily, or as recommended by your veterinarian. If no response is noted, or if your pet is not eating or is vomiting, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. WHY DO I NEED PROVIABLE-FORTE WHEN THERE ARE PROBIOTICS IN MY PET S FOOD? Probiotics that are supplied in pet foods may be ineffective when ingested by the pet due to the manufacturing processes of the food. In addition, there may not be sufficient numbers of the probiotics to elicit a response, and the strains included in the food may not have the beneficial properties of a probiotic microorganism. Proviable products in comparison provide a guaranteed concentration of live bacteria and provide multiple beneficial strains. Not all probiotics are equal. Some products do not contain live probiotic microorganisms or only contain low numbers. CAN I GIVE MY PET YOGURT INSTEAD OF PROVIABLE -FORTE? Yogurt products contain probiotics but not usually at concentrations necessary to help populate the intestinal tract of the dog or cat in order to elicit a beneficial response, especially during times of imbalance. Furthermore, the probiotic species in yogurts may not be live or contain the most beneficial strains for dogs and cats. HAS PROVIABLE BEEN STUDIED IN DOGS AND CATS? Yes, Proviable products have been clinically evaluated in both dogs and cats. Independent studies conducted at veterinary universities evaluated the safety and benefits of Proviable. One study showed that Proviable s probiotics were detected in the stool in just 24 to 48 hours after administration in both dogs and cats. In the second study, owners reported an improvement in stools in cats with diarrhea. No adverse events were observed in dogs or cats in either study, supporting Proviable s safety.

4 Why multiple strains? A probiotic product with multiple strains, which have different properties, has a higher likelihood of colonization versus a single strain product. Research suggests better effects from use of a multiple strain over single strain probiotic. 5 HOW DO I GIVE PROVIABLE -FORTE? Below are general recommendations. Depending on your pet s response and condition, your veterinarian may adjust the amount. KP paste is in a graduated dial tube. It should be given by squirting the paste into your pet s mouth. KP paste and Proviable -Forte capsules can be given together with food, as long as the food does not sit uneaten for an extended period of time. 6 CAN PROVIABLE PRODUCTS BE GIVEN WITH MEDICATIONS? The kaolin and pectin in KP paste could delay absorption of some medications, so the use of the paste should be separated by 1 2 hours from medications. Proviable-Forte capsules should not be given at the same time as antibiotic medications for full effectiveness of the probiotics; therefore, it is best to separate administration by 1 2 hours. ARE THERE ANY SAFETY CONCERNS OR SIDE EFFECTS WITH PROVIABLE PRODUCTS? Probiotics should be provided based on the recommendation of your veterinarian. They are not recommended for pets that are critically ill or that have a suppressed immune system, or in animals that are severely dehydrated or vomiting. There are no known side effects with probiotics when given according to package recommendations. KP paste should only be used for hours unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian, as the kaolin and pectin could potentially cause constipation with prolonged use at higher than recommended doses. HOW SHOULD PROVIABLE PRODUCTS BE STORED? The probiotics in Proviable products are protected to ensure viability with storage at room temperature, not to exceed 77 F, for two years. The expiration dates are found on the packaging. If there is concern about storage at temperatures above 77 F, Proviable products can be stored in the refrigerator as long as they are not frozen.
