ÇEŞME - İZMİR
Who are we? ÇESAL is an organization formed by animal lovers and activists in the Çeşme Peninsula. We believe in the harmony of human animal nature as the backbone of a civilized society. 2
Our priority Our first priority is to eradicate Hungry Thirsty Wounded Non-neutered / spayed animals that are in need of help and are homeless. 3
Why Çeşme? There is a symbolic meaning because all the summer towns in Turkey are the places where most dogs are abandoned after summer vacation There are around 700 dogs in the local shelter of Çeşme struggling in miserable conditions We estimate the number of stray dogs on the streets of Çeşme is around 4000 and the same goes for the stray cats 4
What are we doing? 5
Clinical Treatment Every day lots of cats and dogs have accident on the streets or they fell ill due to lack of care and food,we take them under our care and send them to the veterinary clinics that work with us under a special contract The ones that need surgery are sent to İzmir We also take care the sick and wounded ones in the Shelter since there is no proper veterinary capacity there 6
Fostering home We try to find temporary homes for the animals that are sick, newly abandonned, gave birth, small breed etc. We also foster the dogs that are in the process of international adoption for 4 months Puppies are the most vulnerable so we try to take them under protection till they find a home or at least get neutered / spayed 7
Adoption We find reliable homes for the animals and give them only with a signed contract and the requirement of a follow-up For the international adoption, we take care of preparing all the official documents 8
Regular Feeding We do regular feeding within the entire Çeşme peninsula We have 20+ feeding volunteers We buy dry food every month with the donations and distribute them to the volunteers In addition to that, we also try to collect left-overs from supermarkets and restaurants for the stray animals 9
Awareness Campaign // Billboards Awareness Campaign 10
Awareness Campaign // Events 11
Awareness Campaign // T-shirts 12
Awareness Campaign // Social Media 13
Spaying / Neutering By law, local government is required to spay / neuter all the stray animals, however they never have enough budget, we lobby on behalf of the law and force them at least to do some campaigns during the year and the rest of the time we try to spay & neuter with our own means. 14
The problems we face Finding foster homes We don t have a proper center for people to come and get info about us and see our cats / dogs waiting for adoption Our clinic expenses are too high We don t have enough volunteers Not enough donations We don t have any properly trained personnel to handle aggressive or traumatised animals In order to increase the probability of adoption we need a place to gather all our cats & dogs 15
Our project - ÇESAL Center 16
What we plan We rented a piece of land and started building some safe parts for the animals but we need more Three mobile containers have been placed for the personnel We plan to have a Veterinary Clinic with full capacity either here or nearby, we will also do an office and a storage for our dry food as well a kitchen And some rooms to accommodate volunteers 17
Our aim To have a proper center for our association To solve the problem of finding temporary homes for the animals to some extend To decrease the clinic expenses To be able to do more spaying / neutering To use the center as an adoption place To give to the people of Çeşme especially children a much needed place to connect with stray animals and change their negative attitude towards them Also contribute to responsible tourism concept which is quite new in Turkey 18
According to some studies The Economic Impact of Stray Cats and Dogs at Tourist Destinations on the Tourism Industry According to a study done in 26 countries 66% of the consumer prefer to buy from the companies who are socially conscious Most of the tourists don t want to return to the places where there are badly treated stray animals This shows that stray animals have far more effect on tourism than thought but the sector doesn t still grasp this reality 19
What is Responsible Tourism A rising trend A new way of travelling popular especially among the Generation Y A group of young people who prefer to get blended with the locals wherever they go They refuse the classical sea & sun vacations and want to make a difference while travelling Çeşme and Alaçatı are quite suitable for this group of people 20
How does it work? The sites such as connect the associations like us to the travellers and volunteers We register and describe what kind of volunteers we need, for how long etc. People who would like to work with animals and explore the area at the same time apply We provide accommodation and meals against 4-5 hrs work at the ÇESAL Centre This way we solve our human resource problem and at the same time contribute to the tourism 21
Advantage It will be a one of a kind project in Turkey It will start a new trend in the tourism sector that still operates with classical terms and struggles to attract new generation travellers It will be a project that gets lots of media attention The ÇESAL Center will be a place that Çeşme people are proud of 22
Name of the program Extend your hands and save lives 23
Promotion It will be launched as ÇESAL Extend your hands and save lives in Turkey, Europe, Canada and USA Communication materials: Website, a viral video, leaflet and online banner Social media will be used extensively to reach out the target group 24
For Çeşme All the sick or wounded stray animals will be treated freely in our clinic and we will be doing spaying neutering periodically We will have a special price list for the animals of our members and the volunteers The center will be a much needed reference point for people to seek advice regarding their pets Most importantly it will be a touch point for people and children to come and visit the abandoned cats and dogs, even if they can t adopt them they will be able to communicate with them... 25
Not only cats and dogs In Turkey people in general do not treat the donkeys and horses properly, they use them to carry heavy stuff and do not provide the care these animals need We at ÇESAL, are planning to do a project regarding this issue We will start legal procedure for the people who doesn t behave according to law We will also develop an awareness campaign towards the farmers and horse / donkey owners 26
ÇESAL Center and the kids ÇESAL believes educating children is essential to overcome the negative attitude towards animals in Turkey We will organize some meetings at the Center We will work with primary schools to develop joint programs We are also planning to have some projects together with Summer Schools and Surfing Schools in Alaçatı 27
