2 Mann Missive Resident Moves. Last week, two Mayflower homes were vacated via moves. Paul and Sharon Torno, short-term guests in Edwards #1, returned to their New Mexico home with plans to return one day to a Mayflower Harwich Terrace home. Rhonda Whitehead, retired Mayflower Receptionist, moved from her 519 Park Street Harwich Terrace home to her new home in Arizona. Rhonda plans to be married this summer and live permanently in Arizona. Preventing Alzheimer s Disease. A study was published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine on December 18, 2018 that looked at a number of methods tested to discover brain health protections. In an editorial accompanying the studies, Eric Larson, MD, of the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, noted that the recent Lancet Commission report on dementia, published in July 2017, concluded that one-third of dementia cases could be prevented through better management of lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, depression, and hearing loss over the course of a lifetime. "This strategy acknowledges that factors throughout life influence ADRD [Alzheimer's disease and related dementias] development," wrote Larson, who was also a contributing researcher on the Lancet report. "In addition, improving risk factors will contribute to better general health and well-being." UnityPoint Health Grinnell Regional Medical Center New Emergency Department. Our local hospital (See new name above.) has completely remodeled their Emergency Department. It is back in service in the same space, same entrance. There are now specialized, state-of-the-art trauma rooms for treatment of incoming patients. It is reassuring to know that right here in Grinnell, we have the most modern of emergency care. Friends The Key to Longevity. Articles published in the recently-released February 26 th edition of Time magazine, makes the strong case that friendships are critical as we age. Not only do we need to make new friendships as we lose old friends, but active friendships help protect the brain and body from stress, anxiety, and depression. More in my next column. Caulkins Crossing A Reality. The Avantgarde artwork and new finishes at the Pearson/Edwards/Montgomery/Watertower Square tunnel intersection is striking. Unusual and fun. The concept of crossings is displayed by two 3-D murals train tracks and sheep crossing the road and railroad crossing signals. There are still three more pieces of art to be hung. By the way, it is not necessary to stop at the crossing signal until the red lights turn green. The lines of residents have created a traffic jam in the hallway! Plus, the lights don t turn green. There is always something new at Mayflower. Thank you, Doug and Lorna. Bob Mann, Executive Director (bmann@mayflowerhomes.com)

If you would like space in the Mayflower garden on 2 nd Street, to the west of the resident garages, please let me know before March 20th. We hope all residents will come to an open house for Ariel on March 26th to wish her happy birthday. In place of cards or gifts, we hope residents will stack the tables high with non-perishable food items for the food pantry. Please choose food to donate that is well within its expiration date and is something you would like to have on your pantry shelf. Mica uses plastic grocery bags to package the food pantry items so tuck in your extras. Tea Time Wednesday, March 14, 3:00 pm Buckley Dining Room Ladies, Gentlemen & Guests Everyone is WELCOME! We plan to have Boggle, Scrabble, Rummikub, Mah Jong, Quiddler, Five Crowns, Sequence, Dominos, Wizard, and Ticket to Ride, but please bring other games to share. Feel free to come and socialize even if you are not sure you want to play. Ice cream with toppings will appear at some time during the evening so save room for dessert. Call Katherine McClelland if you have questions. As an experiment, Greg Buntz will drive Lester to the Bucket Course on Wednesday, March 7, leaving Beebe Circle at 9:30. Beyond that, depending upon the numbers using and the availability of volunteer drivers, we can t commit at this time. Many Bucket Course attendees will continue to walk, especially given that better weather is coming, but this is a chance to see who would use the service and be interested in the transportation in the future -- especially in bad or winter weather. If you want to hop on board, be in the Beebe Circle next Wednesday at 9:30. Riding or not, please give us your feedback and thoughts about having this service in the future. Thank you. --Rey Evans and Greg Buntz The Bistro will be CLOSED Saturday & Sunday, March 3 & 4 and March 10 & 11. She has speed bags and heavy bags and with her 30 years of exercise experience, Georgia can adjust exercise to each individual. Georgia s goal is always to make health & fitness the best and highest level possible no matter one s age or current physical status. 8 BETWEEN THE BOOKENDS Anne Enright s novel, The Green Road, is a hard book to read. The prose is clear and often beautiful. The characters are vivid and memorable. The six members of the Madigan family mother Rosaleen, father Pat, the sons Dan and Emmet, and the daughters Hanna and Constance are bound together by familiarity and love. But they also disappoint and damage each other. Dan breaks his mother s heart by becoming a priest and then failing in his vocation; Hanna is an alcoholic; Emmet wants to save the world but recognizes the futility of his efforts; while Constance, well-named Constance, tries to hold the family together. And, in fact, in the end, they cannot be other than together. Do read this book. But you might want to wait until Spring.
