2012 Jakkals Jag Wenke Dis n nuwe jaar, again often criticised by another forum ja! hy moet ons die geheime wys and all other kinds of rubbish people spit out, they seem to always have little digs about our site, jealousy is a heck of a thing, and they have never met us but like talking down about our site, well here is just another little article to piss them off more, shame must be hard for them, and yes I am today feeling arrogant as after all it is my site and I do know it is far superior to the other, but if it gives them pleasure to spit garbage out and give us even more exposure on the web that s awesome. Here is some tips.. So, here are a few things I can give as small tips to help achieve better results. Here is a list compiled for both jackal and lynx Karoo vermin!

Here is a good tip to start, the above photo of me is taken as the sun is going down behind the mountain, DO NOT sit in a chair and swivel and turn and move a lot before dark, BECAUSE predators will see you and you wont know you lost out, they pick up movement fast, especially a cat! At low light dusk ( as above) I scan constantly with night vision and can see if anything is around, if I don t have night vision I keep dead still or sit below the top of the bakkie If you use night vision remember when the sun is out of sight and you use night vision in 80% of the areas excluding the sun down area with night vision you at this time can see better than you can in daylight, its bright and clear When marking spots mark 7-8 places WITH THE WIND, the final place turn around, face the wind, and this is now you re first staan plek then working into the wind work back to the other spots If you don t use night vision make simple sketches of the area you will stop and call at night so you know how the land is when you stop the truck. Drive from place to place at night with RED FILTERS over your bakkie lights. OR Get a GPS E TREX THE YELLOW MODEL, and mark your way to the spots, then you can follow the travel route line on the E TREX and you can drive in total darkness to the next place, without using any lights at all, it is dead accurate to follow, simply drive over the line on the GPS and you will be 100% safe, if on private property not public roads and it is scary in the start but you get used to it, driving in darkness! This way you get closer to wildlife!!!!!!!!! If you have a driver don t bang on the roof to stop, use a remote inside light in the bakkie

Be careful if you use head mounted night vision to drive a bakkie at night, if you are not used to it, you will take a corner before you actually get to it! No jokes.. trust me, be careful I have sticks with Velcro, and I can put them on the top of the canvas cover at night to show me the direction if the animal shot, so I don t lose his place, after I shoot I take the stick and lay it on the top of the open canvas cover Here is a tip that has been copied by many jackal hunters; I use a canvas cover with an opening on the top that opens with a zip, flap and Velcro. If it rains or dew comes I can zip it closed, it is also a lot warmer inside the cover and is just much neater. KIE%20UPDATE.pdf

Never use black colours to cover the truck, your bakkie will stand out at night

Study this link; these things are vital to have greater success. Read this u%20are%20only%20able%20to%20hunt%20once%20a%20ye ar,%20but%20want%20success!.pdf 1. Never call too much and overcall an area, read the above link. 2. Don t call to loud, and don t use the same sounds too often. 3. Move 500m to every spot not further. 4. Call an hour or more at each stand not less! 5. Know the cycle of jackal - match sounds to the time of year. 6. Know the moon and how to pick a good time, generally 5-6 days before new moon for cats, new moon and 5-6 days after new moon for jackal. 7. Don t hunt jackal past quarter moon with red lights, you will educate them. 8. Use night vision, predators come faster, closer to the call. 9. Don t scan to fast with red lens, from ahead of you turn and count to 8, when you get to 8 you must be back to same position that you started at, this is the speed you need. 10. DON T wait toooo long in between scanning, scan and off, wait 10 seconds, max 15 seconds and again. NEVER wait to long between lighting, I wait 10 seconds. 11. Use a dimmer to get animals closer, cats are light shy, so dim light OR hold light above incoming animal, catch him just under his feet, don t put him dead centre of the light. 12. AVOID calling at places with dead ground

CATTY STUFF 1. Remember the moon! SIMPLY NO MOON AT ALL!! 2. Best time of month is 7 days prior to new moon and for an all nighter - 2 days before new moon and 2-3 days after new moon, these in total give you 10 days of pure BEST cat calling time, the best being 2 days before new moon and 2 days after, this is all night WITHOUT ANY MOON AT ALL. 3. Weather best before storm BUT better after. 4. Pitch dark skies. 5. BEST on a little wind, I have called cats for many years most of them called on a slight wind. 6. Cat calling ALWAYS place the caller near you so you can see eyes or if it is away from you he looks in wrong place and you won t see his eye reflection in your red light. 7. Use a hand caller with squeaky sounds, best for a cat don t worry with electronics, more success with a hand call 8. If calling jackal with food and a bark now and again a cat will still come in, it won t put him off - so be careful. 9. Have a lot of patience; most cats come after about 45 minutes to an hour OR MORE! 10. Cover bakkie and chair well, turn on chair slower as cats pick up your movement fast! 11. Don t worry about wind direction - a cat will come from any direction they cannot smell you. (Groukatte / Rooikatte) 12. Cat calling make sure to use as much camo as you can. 13. Don t be in a hurry to shoot a cat, he gives lots of time, he isn t like a jackal, so take your time and he will offer lots of time to shoot him. 14. Don t use a strong light and don t put it full beam with him in centre.

15. He is light sensitive, if he blinks fast your light is too bright and he will move! So use a dimmer OR lift the light so you catch him just under his feet, when close drop light to shoot. 16. Use laser pointer to draw him out of cover. 17. Don t stand in the open calling cats; look for koppies, bushy outcrops, river beds, water catchment areas, and RUBBISH DUMPS! 18. Rubbish dumps are excellent places as they know they can get food i.e. mice etc. 19. Don t be in a hurry calling cats, they take time, lots of it, DON T call 45 minutes and then use a white light or scan with whatever, only use red! 20. They hear well, so be quiet. 21. On his approach identify him by coming in LOW to ground and slow, he will possibly vanish and resurface in a different spot 15 minutes later, if you call and see eyes and then he is gone, just wait and look around, he will pop back again. 22. Don t wear gloves on your calling hand it will make the sound muffled and not crisp. 23. Use a plastic caller for cats NOT WOOD it is far crispier and clearer in its quality of sound. 24. Sound travel more at night because of ZERO air pollution so don t call to loud, it not natural. 25. Use an owl decoy at night on a fence about 70m from you facing the cover areas. REMEMBER 2 nd hand cat sounds on cd or digital callers does not call cats in, it has no effect on them at all, unlike the jackal, 2 nd hand vocal sounds has no effect on cats at all, if you call one with it, he was so close he looked up BUT in theory it DON T work at all, so don t be bullshitted by what people tell you.

26. Use trail cameras to monitor areas that have hard ground, and if you see cat movements note the times and call them. TAKE NOTE; NEVER when calling cats put an electronic caller far away from you! A Rooikat is a dumb animal, he CANNOT smell you, and wind direction is NOT a factor, AND if you place an electronic caller away from you he will look at the sound and thus you wont see his eye reflection in that light, make sure the caller is not more than 10m from you, cats approach low and mostly slow and if that call is away from you you will not see his eye refection in your light, and you wont know you ever called in a cat! NEVER PLACE THAT CALL AWAY FROM YOU FOR CATS!!!!

VITAL FOR JACKAL HUNTING IS CALL PLACEMENT; Many hunters will hunt jackal and kill many jackals with one caller, that s a fact, but I ask this - how many of them are 8 to 14 years old jackals not many The reason is, jackals know your sounds as you play the same stuff over and over, educating them, and the bigger dogs know you, and stay away, you kill the younger dumber ones, you leave the educated ones behind. ONLY one way will allow you to be successfully removing older dogs, and this is with 2 calls, or even 3! Mass produced cd s sold the Karoo jakkalse ken hom goed, you need to use fresh sounds, once they are taught it s harder to kill them. SO Using a system that confuses a jackal is required, and those who know me, know full well I am a strong advocate of the use of two calls or even 3. A system that s has proven over and over that it works well. Personally I NEVER hunt a jackal with less than 2 calls. Here are a few drawings that I want to share to help you working 2 calls and others stuff as a bonus. So here we go, study these detailed systems and try them, and you will see it does work, just use sounds that your buurman don t use!

DRAWING WITH 2 CALLERS This system has killed many jackals since I started using it, and on courses in Free State I demonstrate how good it really is, it confuses a jackal, and he must think carefully to work the set properly, 99% of jackals come into the call from the totally wrong wind direction. This set up is great with a small moon on quarter. WIND ELECTRONIC FOOD CALL 50m X Gland lures x3 80m 80m X 50m JACKAL VOCAL BARK CALLER Park about 10m off the road, face into wind, and place the 3 open jackal female gland urine bottles downwind 20m behind bakkie 20m apart to hide your smell also. Callsfood into wind 80m, 45 degree angle 50 m into lands, and bark call 80m downwind, 45 degrees and 50m into lands on the OPPOSITE sides of the road! Play food caller for 5 seconds and OFF, wait a minute, NEVER overcall. The barking caller I use a territorial call after 5 minutes and then again 15 minutes later.

This style of calling works, these 3 dogs are part of 4, the 4 th we could not find, all fell at the same stand to a set up like this. Another 3 jackals that fell to a caller set up, as seen in this photo, all 3 fell at the same stand again.

DRAWING WITH 1 CALLER & A HANDCALL Here we have got a different scenario, remember that jackals are pack animals, you will call many with his own language more often than without, SO gooi a jackal vocal bark every say 15 minutes, not to much! And then foods sound on your bakkie with a hand caller. This set up is great in pitch darkness. WIND You with hand call on bakkie Gland lures x3 100m X 50m JACKAL VOCAL BARK CALLER Again, about 10m off the road, face into wind, and place the 3 open jackal female gland urine bottles downwind 20m behind bakkie 20m apart to hide your smell also. Place the bark call 100m downwind, 45 degrees and 50m into lands on the OPPOSITE side of the road! When you call don t blow the sound in one direction change the direction, this will cause the sound to sound like the animal is moving at a distance and give the calling sound more reality to it. The sound will change due to movement from a distance it sounds very realistic. While you turn on the chair blow your caller.

DRAWING WITH 2 electronics and a hand caller Here we have another style you can use; I use two of my digital electronics and use them on timers, sequenced to play just like I want them to. I walk out and place the first vocal jackal barking call with the wind and switch it on when I walk from the truck, set on 15 minutes, the other call I turn on when I put down the first caller, then its also at 15 minutes, then it gives me a gap of 3o seconds between the two different jackals that will answer later when I am calling. X 50m Jackal Vocal Bark Caller WIND FEMALE JACKAL Gland lures x3 80m X 50m JACKAL VOCAL BARK CALLER This system also gives the effect that other jackals are in the area and answering a distress haasie in die oop vlaktes, this system just caused confusion and it makes the total calling stand just more natural sounding, I never play to many vocal jackal sounds as it s not normal. ALWAYS PUT OUT THE 3 FEMALE JACKAL GLAND LURE BOTTLES.

2 ELECTRONICS and 1 VOCAL BARKER MY FAVOURITE CALLING STYLE This is an awesome calling style, it has killed many jackals, try this it is awesome. PROVEN JACKAL KILLER This is one of my favourite calling styles, it is awesome, I normally use this on my first calling stand, and love this specific one, it s a sure killer. X 50m REMOTE FOOD SOUND WIND ANOTHER 50m FOOD SOUND X FEMALE JACKAL Gland lures x3 80m 80m X 50m JACKAL VOCAL BARK CALLER Here is how I work this setup, I run two of my own digital electronic callers we manufacture, I again place the jackal bark downwind at a 45 degree angle, and the food opposite it on the other side of the road, also 45 degrees and both 50m off the road, they are equally split up as shown above, then I use a remote caller like a Foxpro Fury with the same food sound loaded as the other digital caller that I place downwind. I walk out from the truck when I am ready to call, place the jackal vocal barker set on 15 minutes and then walk to the spot and then switch on the food caller on a setting of 4 minutes, so it goes off once every 4 minutes.

Then I get in position and start to call when my food digital starts to call out, I then with the Foxpro every 1 or 2 minutes play the other caller into the wind with the same sound as my other food call. I typically work the food into the wind to squeal every say one and a half minutes and this is not overkill for jackal, the other one will go off after 4 minutes, NOW the reason for all this is; It sounds like the animal is moving around and confuses a jackal, I have seen OFTEN with watching with night vision, you see eyes far away, and watch him coming closer and closer, when he gets to 250m I can see him clearly, and as he runs I can see his body language and see if he is looking at others also, many times, he stops and looks at the callers sound and stares at it.. is confused, when he comes closer I set the other one off if he is still too far, and he has no idea as to what is happening. On my last course I called 13 jackals in ONLY ONE of them got to read the wind correctly. Just as example, here is a drawing of another hunt, and you can see just how this set up works. Road X Food Call X Food Call Wind X Bark Call

All the above jackal got the wind wrong the RED line was a house cat that passed by our set, we never shot it. It was just a fluke he came from the correct direction, all the other jackals got it all wrong PINK jackal made a huge error and was an educated bugger; he came in and went back and forth, was 200m out, but never worked the set properly, got wind wrong. DARK RED JACKAL well, she got it all wrong. BLUE JACKAL he failed to circle properly and came in between the two food calls. The only one to get it correct was the house cat ha ha, and even though he could hear the jackals barking etc, it never bothered him, and he went about his mouse hunting like it was a normal night. I hope this article helps you a lot in 2012 Jakkals Groete
