Between the Bookends: The Greater Journey by David McCullough is the story of the adventurous American artists, writers, doctors, politicians, and architects who set off for Paris in the years between 1830 and 1900, ambitious to excel in their work. These Americans include Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor in America, Charles Sumner, the voice for abolition in the U.S. Senate, James Fenimore Cooper, Samuel F.B. Morse, Pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk, George P.A. Healy, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, and Henry James. Nearly all of these Americans, whatever their troubles learning French, their spells of homesickness, and their suffering in the raw cold winters by the Seine, spent many of the happiest days and nights of their lives in Paris.

At the last Mayflower All- Campus Neighborhood Meeting, a question was raised regarding access to a power source to operate an oxygen concentrator in the event of loss of electrical power on the Mayflower campus. Even though power outages are rare and far between, this is an important question for residents who are dependent on oxygen therapy. We are responsible for providing oxygen sources to dependent residents in our Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living. As in any residential setting, it is important to have a back-up supply of oxygen in the form of a pressurized tank. If that supply dwindles, there are a number of campus electrical outlets into which a concentrator may be plugged when there is a loss of commercial electricity to campus. We have four energy generators three natural gas and one diesel that power critical parts of our Health Center, Beebe Assisted Living, Buckley kitchen and common areas, and the campus phone system and some common areas in the Pearson building. In the first two buildings, generatorpowered electrical outlets are red. If your concentrator is portable, you are welcome to bring it to any of those outlets. If you lose power and do not have a backup oxygen source, contact our Beebe nursing office for assistance ( ). One More Reason to Get a Flu Shot. The July 15 th edition of AARP The Magazine quotes Jacob A. Udell, M.D., coauthor of a recent study, who speculates that getting a flu shot, may block the inflammatory response our bodies mount to combat a flu infection, which protects arterial plaques from rupturing and causing a cardiac event. Our State Fair Is A Great State Fair! At last week s Mayflower State Fair, a record number of entries were judged by an august panel of judges. All had a great time. Thank you, Mayflower State Fair Volunteer Coordinators, Bob and Dot Anderson, for your many hours of work and bubbling exuberance that made this all happen. 3 BIG CROWD REVELS AT STATE FAIR A record crowd of ninety-two, feasted at a bountiful buffet of State Fair food, as the MRA Social Committee presented the fourth edition of our homegrown Mayflower State Fair last Thursday in a jam packed Carman Center. The grande finale brought tears of joy, as the assembly was entertained by the ladies of the Kitchen Band, serenaded by the Men of Mayflower sextet, and doubled over by the antics of a prize winning collection of eight unique farm animals on Royal Montgomerys Mayflower Hobby Farm, in the original drama, Strut Your Stuff! Nearly one hundred entries in seven categories challenged the judges eyes and taste buds, as Blue, Red and Green ribbons were awarded. The crowd got into the action by casting votes in the Kutest (gal & guy) Kids contest, with photos of residents at the age of 5 8. There was ample time to admire the wide range of entries competing in Baked Goods, Art, Flowers, Handcrafts, Heirlooms and Photography. Trees readily allow autumn to have their summer leaves. Trees allow the frost to touch them, and the wind to toss them. They allow the season to make it appear that all is lost and that there is no green growth left. But they know better, for even at their most barren moment, when one can look among the branches and see scars and knotholes the leaves once hid, the trees already show terminal buds with the secret of next spring s leafing in them. We humans have a lot to learn from autumn trees. No one of us wants to be so surrendered, so vulnerable to winter as the October trees. Yet, each of us, if we are truly open to growth and change, will experience this in our inner selves. Thank you Bucket Courses start with Variety Pack A six-session course with six different topics and six different speakers will kick off the Bucket Courses sponsored by the Grinnell Community Education Council. Called the Variety Pack, the course will start September 11 and continue through October 16. Classes will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Drake Community Library. The fee of $20 includes all six classes and is payable at the first class. Single-class registration is not available. Registration can be done online with Jim Ahrens at jamesaahrens@gmail.com or in person at the Drake Community Library or at the desk at Pearson Hall at the Mayflower Community.The topics and presenters are: September 11 Tilly Woodward, curator of academic and public outreach for Grinnell College s Faulconer Gallery, will talk about Books, Bread, and Ghana: Making Art with Children Rescued from Slavery. The class will focus on her summer 2012 trip to Ghana, where she helped former child slaves use art to express themselves and improve both their reading and math. September 18 Dr. Peter Daniolos, training director and clinical associate professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Iowa Children s Hospital, will present a program on The Art and Science of Psychotherapy. His talk will review the major schools of psychotherapy, with a focus on techniques used and the evidence based behind them. September 25 Jim Kottmeier s class, Footprints on the Moon: Our Country s Last Great Adventure, will look at the challenges that faced the U.S. space program in the 1960s. Kottmeier helped with the design and construction of the steering and direction control system for both the Apollo Command Module and the Lunar Excursion Module. October 2 Dr. J. R. Paulson, a Grinnell physician, returns to the Bucket Courses this year to present a class on Confucius, a Chinese philosopher, teacher, politician and author whose principles helped shape Chinese thought and action for 2,000 years. The class will deal with an overview of Confucian teachings and the application of his principles. October 9 Cynthia Hansen s class, Language: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, will provide an introduction to the field of linguistics - the study of language from a scientific perspective. The class will show that even language that sounds ugly has something to offer our theory of language and the mind. Hansen is assistant professor of anthropology and linguistics at Grinnell College October 16 Beryl Clotfelter the first presenter at the first Bucket Course in 2009 will talk about early efforts to promote science in his class titled Beginning of the Scientific Enterprise. He will focus specifically on the formation in 1662 of one of the most important scientific organizations, the Royal Society of London for the Advancement of Experimental Philosophy. Clotfelter is professor emeritus of physics at Grinnell College. The Bucket Courses are sponsored by the Community Education Council.
